"we heard the first shot, followed by the just a couple of seconds by the second shot."9-1-1 operators alerted deputies after someone called but did not speak. the 911 call was given that night from the residence on a cell phone but no contact was made with somebody that was on the other line. and that's what's unusual about that 911 call. deputies arrived within minutes and found the bodies of james and denise kloss. "based on our investigations thus far, we believe jayme was in the home at turkey store in the town of bannon. "they were active in girl scouts, in school-related things, just like the rest of us in a tight-knit community."as for the missing girl ... (grant) developers testing an earthquake early warning system say it's automated alerts are now ready to be used more broadly. the u-s-g-s says the system has now transitioned from a production prototype... to operational mode. steve kuzj reports. there's something always on the backs of the minds of californians.we're talking about earthquakes.rep. adam schiff/(d) california:"the big one is coming. we just don't know when and the only question is will we be prepared?"a few crucial seconds is all it takes to avoid disaster and save lives. that's the idea behind shake alerts.it's a brand new technology developed by the
5:25 pm
geniuses at caltech to protect the west coast from powerful quakes.how does it work? according to the caltech seismologists and engineers who created it... when an earthquake begins, a variety states are instantly triggered. the quake's location is pinpointed and everyone in the shake area is sent alerts. eventually officials hope to reach everyone with shake alerts through their cell phones -- similar to how your phone vibrates or blasts out alarms whenever you're in the area of an amber alert.for now though, shake alerts go to transportation systems, schools, hospitals and utility companies -- as well as a few other places.the drawback is because earthquakes spread so fast... some people will only have seconds to react to their alert.others will have no time. "the earthquake waves themselves travel about 2000 miles an hour or so. three times the speed of your fastest jetliners. so they're quite fast, but it does take some time to get from the earthquake epicenter to you." rep. judy chu/(d) california: "individuals can receive advance notices of 10 to 20 seconds. that may not sound like a lot, but think about what can be done in 20 seconds. a surgeon can safely pause an operations, saving a life on the table. trains and elevators can be stopped so passengers are safe. gas lines can be closed.""the potential is enormous."
5:26 pm
(grant) that was steve kuzj reporting. select industries, utilities, schools and other entities have been using shakealert for years... but officials now say it can be used more widely.
