site fires have been a problem in the east bay. in 2016 a 105-project in emeryville suffered heavy damage a few months later... a fire near lake merrtt destroyed a 41-unit project that had been under for about a year. then in may of 2017 that complex was burned again. police believe one three of those fires.

has denied a man's request to represent himself with a public defender at his side. convicted kidnapper matthew muller made the motion monday inside the solano county court house in vallejo. it comes after the former harvard law school graduate abandoned the idea of representing himself against the state charges. muller received a 40-year prison sentence for the 2015 kidnapping of denise huskins from her mare island home. vallejo police initially thought that huskins and her boyfriend made the whole thing up. that mistake that led to a civil claim costing vallejo tax payers over 2- million-dollars. . ( lydia ) this morning we're learning more about the case against a 90- year-old former catholic priest recently named as an accused child sex abuser in the south bay. hernan toro is now facing 6 counts of lewdness with a minor involving two victims. the charges against him stretch over a 5 year period. the case involves young

girls under the age of 14. one was only reportedly 5 years old when she says toro - a family friend - began to molest her. officials say he was permantly banned from ministry in 1990. (lydia) oakland's mayor will no longer allow the city's police department to ask job applicants if they've been sexually assaulted.... mayor libby schaaf's decision follows a story in the chronicle about the policy - which has apparently been in effect since at least 2011.. until now, if you wanted to apply at the oakland police department, you had to sign a waiver allowing background investigators to look at all criminal history information... that included whether you'd been sexually assaulted.. (lydia) breaking overnight ... police in salt lake city are looking for the man who they believe shot and killed a student at the university of utah. police say female student was found dead in a car. the campus was placed on lockdown last night ... but it has since been lifted because police believe the man is not on campus. police are searching for 37 year old

(lydia) happening today ... employees at u-c-s-f medical center are hitting the picket lines for the start of a three day strike. its scheduled to begin in about two hours. striking employees include operating room specialists, respiratory therapists, patient care assistants, pharmacy and hospital lab technicians, and other health care professionals. custodians, shuttle drivers and food service workers will also be striking. thousands of appointments at u-c-s-f medical center have been rescheduled. this is the second strike in six months. workers at u-c-s-f benioff children's hospital oakland will not be striking. (lydia) in the south bay, police in sunnyvale are asking for the public's help identifying a hit and run driver who killed a bicyclist. it happened saturday afternoon near the intersection of central expressway and pajaro avenue.

investigators believe they have captured an image of the suspect vehicle on surveillance video. the car is described as a 2004-06 toyota sienna minivan, maroon or red in color with front windshield and front fender damage. morning ... police in the north bay say they have used d-n-a to capture a rape suspect.( james ) as kron 4's j-r stone explains ... the rape involved a 14-year-old girl back in 2011. that is when she said the male came out of the creek and grabbed her and pulled her down into the creek and sexually assaulted her.sgt. jeff justice is describing what this man is accused of

doing back in 2011. that being 39 year old william deen brown. who is believed to have followed a 14 year old girl in the area near the rohnert park hooters on redwood drive. a location that was being built at the time. the teen knew she was being followed but at one point looked back and thought the man was gone. according to police she then turned around, came over this bridge above the hinebaugh creek, and was grabbed by a man who police say was brown. in this case the suspect in the case was arrested for a felony back in feb...dna sample taken....matched to 2011 case brown was arrested last brown was arrested last week at his current home in santa rosa. he has been a transient at times but it is unclear if he was living on the streets in 2011. others walking on the bridge monday say to this day they often see people in this creek area where the teen girl

( james ) breaking news out of san francisco. firefighters say one man has died in an overnight house fire. the fire started around 3:30 this morning at 13-10 funston avenue. the san francisco fire department says one man died in the fire and and a woman suffered serious burns and was taken to the hospital. ( james ) police in the north bay say they have used d-n-a to capture a rape suspect. 39-year-old william deen brown was arrested last week at his current home in santa rosa. he is accused of raping a 14- year-old girl back in 2011. the girl told investigators she was walking on a bridge above the hinebaugh creek when brown grabbed her, pulled her to the creek, and sexually assaulted her. its unclear if brown was living on the streets at the time of the crime. others walking on the bridge monday say they often see people in the creek
