ryan o'donnell joins us with more on what happened once police showed up. this all started in pittsburg... with the suspect leading police on a brief chase into concord... then coming back to pittsburg... where it all came to a deadly end. police say the 37-year old suspect... was holding his family hostage... and when one of the family members tried to intervene, he was shot in the neck. that's man's wife and child was then forced into a vehicle... and that's when police got involved... chasing him into concord, then back to pittsburg. the woman was able to escape with the child, and ran to police... while the suspect ran into the house and barricaded himself inside. while negotiating with the man... police say he came out... and shot at the officers who returned fire and killed him. at this time... police haven't released his name. the contra cost county d-a's office is investigating this shooting. learning that there is another cracked window at the millennium tower. this is the second window to crack on the sinking and leaning tower in s francisco. it's not clear what caused this latest crack - but according to a report - the previous window crack was caused by an unknown object hitting the outside of the building. homeowners have filed multiple lawsuits against the developer and the city due to the problems with the building sinking and leaning. follow our developing news tonight... the search is on for a possible arsonist after a massive 5-alarm fire in oakland. it happened early this morning at a townhouse complex that was under construction. the housing was being built near the intersection of west grand avenue and filbert street. of them going back to 2012....where arson was either suspected or proven. on june 14th, 2012, a planned 119=unit affordable housing project for seniors went up in flames near the west oakland bart station.the fire shut down the transbay tube for hours and caused a massive commuter backup.the site is now an empty lot.nearly two years later, san francisco's mission bay development was the scene of a spectacular blaze.the five alarm fire did an estimated 40=million dollars damage but the apartment coplex was rebuilt. this one was caused by overheated construction equipment.in 2016 a 105=unit apartment project in emeryville suffered heavy damage. ... the fire went to six alarms.a few months later,

(pam) now, federal investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire -- and whether this is another case of arson. good evening im pam moore(ken) and im ken wayne. 16 hours after the flames erupted the debris is still smoldering. (ken) the fire was first reported around 2:00 a-m - on the corner of west grand avenue and and filbert street. the flames damaged an under construction town-house complex. there have been a number there have been a number of fires in buildings under construction in the bay area in recent years. grant lodes joins us now in studio with more. (land vo) take a look at this map -- showing a number of these incidents. on june of 2012, a planned 119-unit affordable housing project for seniors... went up in flames near the west oakland bart station. nearly two years later, san francisco's mission bay development was the scene of a spectacular blaze. then in 2016, a 105-unit apartment project in emeryville suffered heavy damage. ... the fire went to

lauren mc-cluskey had a lot going for her. she was on the university's track and field team... doing just about every event you can. she was majoring in communications and going to graduate this may. but her 21-year old life was cut short... by an ex-boyfriend. police say... by this man here... 37-year old melvin rowland. the two had apprarently dated for a short time... and mc-clusky called it off when she discovered he was lying to her about his name, age and criminal history, including being a registered sex offender. mc-clusky was found shot to death in a vehicle last night after returning from a night class.. she was on the phone with her mom... when she was shot. chief dale brophy/university of utah police: "we received a phone call from a frantic mother, telling us that something happened to her daughter and we needed to send officers to the area. we started an investigation. it took several minutes to get on scene to search the building, search the surrounding area and due to where ms. mccluskey was found in the back seat of the vehicle. once we did find her deceased, we started a large manhunt for our suspect." 0:34 they quickly they quickly they quickly identified melvin
