early monday morning --- local time. the "lion air" flight went missing soon after it tookoff from the capitol city --- jakarta. ( robin ) reports indicate that there were 178 people on board the flight. shortly after the news broke --- families started to gather at the airport in jakarta --- awaiting news on their loved ones. ( robin ) search and recovery effort is underway in the waters surrounding indonesia. so far debris has been found --- but not much else. the cause of the crash is still being investigated. federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against a pennsylvania man who authorities say stormed a pittsburgh synagogue and opened fire, killing 11 people and injuring 6 others. ( robin ) a u.s. attorney in

pittsburgh says he's seeking approval for the death penalty against shooting suspect robert bowers. who unleashed terror on a close-knit community... leaving nearly a dozen people dead.. some police officers were among the injured. a number of vigils we're held this weekend in the wake of the tragic shooting many synagogues across the country are standing in solidarity --- including here in the bay area. kron 4's gayle ong was at a vigil in los altos hills. coming together in the face of tragedy.south bay residents of all races and religions gathered at the congregation beth am sunday nightto show support for the victims of the senseless slayings of eleven people at a synagogue in pittspurgh pennsylvania.

( robin ) a package theft caught on camera. kron 4's aleica reid spoke with the homeowner about why he now fears for his safety. it's a story you'll only see on 4. surveillance cameras capture prowling thieves a minute after fed ex delivers a package .... seems like to me they were following the fed ex delivery personsoon after the truck takes off, a silver sedan makes a u-turn.the pkg was delivered at 3:11pm and by 3:12 the pkg was picked upthe thief gets out ... casually walks up to the doorway, takes the box and goes back to the getaway car. the driver easily takes off. the homeowner who is now fearful the thieves may come back for more ... wants to protect his identity.people are so bold that they can come right in front of the door.. what stops them from coming into the house?his family is even more on edge .... especially after someone tried

stealing his truck from their bangor avenue driveway some months ago. in this incidence, the thief wore a hat that covered his face, but they're hoping someone can identify the suspect vehicle .... which has a distinctive paint job, and black rims ... it appears the porch pirate may have hit at least one other home on thursday.we had one neighbor saying his pkg was alsopicked up between 3 and 315a police report has been filed and the incident was reported to 311. as the holiday season approaches, previously i've had other pkgs or high ticket items delivered at my front step and nothing ever happened but now i can't even order stuff on line because i think someone is gonna take itif you guys are ordering, dont have it delivered. go pick it up and fed ex whateverit's hard earned money and thieves like that they dont carei would not

do it anymore. i'd rather go 5/10 miles to pick it up rather than have it delivered ( robin ) police in richmond are warning people who use credit cards at gas pumps to be on the lookout for skimming devices that are used by identify thieves to steal personal financial information. police posted the warning on facebook after officers responded to a report of a tampered gas pump. an investigation discovered - pry marks along the outer door seam of the pump and a skimming device located behind the credit card reader. police say all pumps should have a security seal along any opening of the pump... if this seal has been tampered with, report this to the station attendant immediately. ( robin ) dublin police arrested a man accused of violently carjacking a victim while she sat inside her car at the gas station. 28-year-old travis byrd was arrested sunday after police

we're called to a report of a carjacking at the chevron gas station on san ramon road. police reports say byrd approached the victim while she sat in the drivers seat parked at a gas pump. byrd allegedly entered the passenger side of her vehicle and ordered her to the backseat. the victim refused and a physical confrontation ensued. witnesses say the victim was able to escape from the vehicle. police caught up with byrd in oakland where the victims stolen car was located. ( robin ) and in san jose -- highway 2-80 was shut down for a time following a deadly crash sunday morning. california highway patrol says one person died following a wreck involving at least four vehicles. traffic was backed up for about half a mile.chp does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collisions. ( robin ) and in the east bay --- a fire caused substantial damge sunday night to a house on the 4100 block

of culber street in oakland. the fire was reported around 7-30 last night on the back deck of the home. no one was reported injured and officials say most of the fire was limited to the rear of the house but they did add it caused "significant" damage. firefighters managed to get in under control within 45 minutes. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. this weekend's shooting at a pittsburgh synagogue is pouring in from across the country. that includes in washington d-c --- where an iranian refugee started a go- fund me and has already raised more than 450 thousand dollars. communities across the nation -- from boston to here in the bay area --- gathered this weekend to remember the 11 people that died saturday. ( robin ) places of worship are on high alert after the tragedy in pittsburgh. president trump says the killings could have been prevented if the synagogue had an armed security guard. kron 4's sara stinson got reaction from a south bay church about what security measures they feel are appropraite at religious services.

( darya ) we're following breaking news out of indonesia ... where a passenger plane carrying 189 people, including one child and two infants, crashed into the ocean.( james ) the "lion air" flight went missing early this morning ... just minutes after it took off from the capitol city of jakarta. the plane is a new boeing 737 jetliner and had only flown 800 hours. hundreds of rescuers are working at the crash site, some 34 nautical miles off the coast. debris have been discovered in the water two miles from the crash but the fuselage has not yet been located.rescue divers are searching in relatively shallow waters ... of 114 feet deep. moments after it was discovered on friday. the firing range was chosen because its just a short drive from burlingame. f-b-i bomb technicians made the package safe ... before sending it off to quantico virginia for forensic testing. ( james ) dublin police arrested a man accused of violently carjacking a victim while she sat inside her car at the gas station. 28-year-old travis byrd was arrested sunday after police we're called to the chevron gas station on san ramon road. police reports say byrd approached the victim while

she sat parked at a gas pump. byrd entered the passenger side of her car and ordered her to the backseat. the driver refused and byrd allegedly beat her. witnesses say she was eventually able to escape from the vehicle. police caught up with byrd in oakland where the victims car was found. ( james ) in oakland ... four men have been charged following an armed carjacking. the crime happened on the 21-hundred block of 105th last monday ... when they stole a car at gunpoint. oakland police arrested the men the next day after spotting the stolen car. police found 3 guns inside the car. three of the men are 23 year old ... the youngest is 18. ( darya ) in san jose -- highway 2-80 was shut down for a time following a deadly crash sunday morning. california highway patrol says one person died following a wreck involving at least four vehicles. traffic was backed up for about half a mile.chp does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collisions.

to the mid-term elections, we are continuing to see campaign rallies across the state for proposition six. here is one unique rally in san francisco. people rode their bikes in high heels to oppose the ballot measure to repeal the state's 2017 gas tax increase. that was passed last year to raise five billion dollars annually for road and bridge improvements and transportation projects. over the weekend -- opponents of the proposition poked fun at a comment made by an orange county republican candidate who said being forced to bike and take trains would not work because of her "hair and heels." they rode their bikes about two miles to show their support for public transportation. morning... an attempted murder investigation is underway in southern california after a shooting at a nightclub in riverside overnight. seven people were injured. the shooting happened just after midnight at the sevilla nightclub. no word on the conditions of the people shot or if the gunman has been arrested. ( darya ) a man is charged with violently carjackiing a woman while she sat inside her car at a gas station in dublin. 28-ye-old travis byrd was arrested sunday morning following the incide at the chevron gas station on san ramon road. police say byrd approached the victim while she sat in the drivers seat parked at a gas pump. byrd allegedly entered the passenger side of her vehicle and ordered her to the backseat. the victim refused and a physical confrontation ensued. witnesses say the victim was able to escape from the vehicle. police caught up with byrd in oakland. that's where they also found the victim's stolen car. ( james ) a homeowner says he fears for his safety

after a thief was caught on camera swiping a package from his doorstep.surveillance cameras capture prowling thieves a minute after fed ex delivers a package ....soon after the truck takes off, a silver sedan makes a u-turn. the thief gets out ... casually walks up to the doorway, takes the box and goes back to the getaway car. the driver easily takes off. the homeowner who is now fearful the thieves may come back for more ... wants to protect his identity. ( james ) the homeowner says someone tried stealing his truck from their bangor avenue driveway some months ago. ( james ) investigators are trying to find the cause of an apartment fire in oakland that forced 12 people out of their homes. people made it out safely, however a dog died in that fire. it happened at

an east oakland apartment building. crews found fire and heavy smoke in a first-floor unit, and managed to contain the blaze there. but, five other units in the building sustained smoke damage. the bay area red cross opened a shelter for those who are displaced by the fire. its located at the oakland sports center at 91-61 edes avenue. recovering this morning after a balcony collapsed in the outer sunset district of san francisco. the victims were injured when the railing gave way on the thrid floor at 20-20 lawton. it happend just after midnight saturday. pg and e crews had to shut off power at the home as the railing pulled down the property's weatherhead. that's a protective metal pipe that accepts power from the line. one neighbor says there was a party at the site but it was not disruptive.

francisco. people rode their bikes in high heels to oppose the ballot measure to repeal the state's 2017 gas tax increase. that was passed last year to raise five billion dollars annually for road and bridge improvements and transportation projects. over the weekend -- opponents of the proposition poked fun at a comment made by an orange county republican candidate who said being forced to bike and take trains would not work because of her "hair and heels." they rode their bikes about two miles to show their support for public transportation. ( james ) halloween was early for patients at sutter health's california pacific medical center. the hospital held its 49th annual neonatal intesive care unit halloween party saturday. the patients over the years were born with extra medical needs due to illness or premature birth. participants dressed in costumes and joined others, ranging in age from infants to their 20's, who were once patients in the neonatal intensive care unit. this is the final holiday celebration at this hospital location before they move to the new van ness- geary campus hospital in march 2019.
