from the bay area's local news station, we begin with breaking news. >> thank you for joining us on the kron 4 morning news i'm robin winston. we are following breaking new where is a gunman walk into a college bar, opened fire killing 12 people including a sheriff's deputy. the gunman is also dead but it's not clear if if he was killed by law enforcement or if he took his own life. we will continue to follow this story for you. i'm sorry. >> reporter: authorities witness this describing a gruesome scene here in thousand oaks, california. the sheriff saying 11 people were found dead inside the

borderline bar and grill. the shooter also being found inside. so far saying the weapon is a single hand otive yet. they will of course not rule out terrorism in this. there was a sheriff's deputy early on that came to the scene and as is the new protocol, instead of waiting, the department heads here saying that if they have one officer, two offices, they are going to go inside. that sheriff's deputy 29 years old. planned to retire in about a year. he was taken to a local hospital where he died. the sheriff calling him a hero. witnesses describing something just terrifying that the shooter goes inside, people are diving for the floor. others are pushing and shoving. and some took bar tools to knock out windows so they could crawl outside. we also know that 10-12 other people were treated at local hospitals. transported to local hospitals

and the sheriff added there were still others that were taking themselves to the hospital. so a lot of people with injuries here. it's still a very active crime scene as authorities try to figure out why a mass shooting sheer in thousand oaks -- shooting here in thousand oaks, california a community known for its safety. back to you. >> thank you, paul. we will continue to check with you throughout the morning. we are also hearing from witnesses, people that were there when this all happened. let's take a listen and see what they have to say. >> they fired the first shot. i knew it was live. i knew it was real. i thought it was a joke. so i pulled him down down and got to cover and looked up and he was moving to the right. the bouncer, just a young man,

and he shot them. the cashier. and then he started moving to the right. he wasn't looking at us and he went into the office. he didn't say anything at all. he just started shooting. and i should have stayed when he changed the clip bouffes worried about my -- clip, but i was worried about my boy. >> the gunman once again is dead but there has been no word on if he was killed by police or if he took his own life. we are also hearing that hundreds of people have gathered at intersection near this bar and grill and they have created a prayer circle. parents are still arriving to the scene as well as other relatives. and once again this is an on going investigation. but just another terrible tragedy out of southern california where another mass shooting has took the life of young people. and some of these young people

were in las vegas during that mass shooting at the country concert and so they're having to relive this incident all over again. we will continue to hollow this breaking news story out of southern california. we'll hear from more witnesses coming up and we'll have more on that sheriff's deputy that was killed. before we continue the story and get to other news around the bay area, let's check in with your forecast. we will take a look at weather and traffic with john. >> reporter: it is another one with plenty of sunshine. and that compounding today to make for red flag warnings. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. crystal clear out there as you make it into work on this thursday. taking a look at where these red flag warnings are. you see them up and down the peninsula. upper elevations of the east bay and well throughout much of the north bay as well. these areas will be especially susceptible to spreadable wild

fire. eventually taking us into tomorrow. now what is different today than yesterday? winds will be much more present. take a look at these north easterly winds pushing their way into the bay area from our inland areas. this is blowing dry air and warm air right here into our own backyard. this is your sustained number right here. we will look at that potential of a rapid wild fire spread. as far as humidity is concerned much lower today. winds certainly adding to that with petaluma, sonoma and napa. even lower tomorrow for atlas peak as we work through the day. definitely conditions out there that are not good should you be outside enjoying our weather. 40s and 50s out there for our current temperatures right now. fremont the exception right now at 61 degrees.

petaluma at 41. or rather nevada at 41. petaluma at 36 degrees. as we work through the day, temperatures 40s and 50s to start. 60s by the time we work toward high is not quite as warm as yesterday. 60s and 70s out there. by 3:00 p.m. today. i have more on your forecast still ahighway. robin, i will send it your way for a look at traffic. a live look at bay bridge toll plaza where pretty good looking ride so far with no major problems here leaving the bottom of the maze through the tolls and the upper deck. we are off to a great start. a quiet start and we are hot spot free. 92 looks really good leaving hayward heading over to the peninsula. no problems to report. 14 minutes to make your way from the nimitz to highway 101. checking in on the richmond-san rafael bridge. no problems. eightmys to make you way from the pay gates to highway --

eight minutes to make your way from the pay gates to highway 101. always leave as early as you can. checking in on traffic tracker, drive times look great. east shore freeway 80 it's about 16 minutes to make your way from crockett to oakland. westbound 24 to walnut creek a nice drive. no problems for 580. and the nimitz freeway doing just fine with a very quick 11 minute trip from 238 heading out to 980. we will check more drive times coming up in just a bit. meanwhile break to our breaking news story out of southern california where at least 12 people were killed at borderline bar and grill which is very op already with young people. it was country night, wednesday night. hundreds of people were in that bar. police say one of the people killed was a sheriff's deputy. eyewitness describes the shooter as a short man. he had a beard. he came will in wearing a black

-- k trench coat and glasses. he shot the bouncer and one other employee working at the door and then he opened fire. another eyewitness says who was in the bar at the time describes it as a very chaotic scene and folks were running and screaming. some folks broke windows with bar stools and it turned into a very scary situation. let's take a listen to more sound. >> it was a normal wednesday. we were at the bar having fun, dancing. and then all of a sudden you hear the bang, bang of the gunshots. and it started going crazy and people were pushing. we thought it was a joke. we didn't take it seriously at first. everyone dropped down to the floor. we thought the shooting was on that said so friends got the bar stools and they slammed it against the window so we could get out. that is how we were able to get

out. they broke the window. they broke the window. >> the scene is secure. we are still identifying more celeb times, more casualties. we don't have an exact number. some people have been transported and showing up at our local hospitals. right now the sheriff's department is doing an investigation to determine exactly what happened. >> i was on the dance floor dancing at the time and then all of my friends were at the table right by the door and i heard the gunshot and i turned around and i saw him shoot a couple more times. and within a split second everyone yelled get down. and everyone dog piled on top of each other and then it was silent for a couple minutes and then all of a sunday a couple guys that were closer to the bar they got up and started

running to the back door and said get up, he's coming. it was a huge panic. everyone tried to get up. trampled a couple times. some guy came up behind me lifted me up and said let's go pip got a bar stool thrown at my head because they were trying to break the window to get out. it was really, really shocking. it kind of -- with my dad being in the military for so long, he has in a way prepared me but never really prepared me for what happened. i kind of got my head in check really quick and thought i need to get to shelter. i need to do something. i didn't have time to think about why it's happening. what is happening. it was just like get out. he had two rounds with him. he changed them in six seconds.

>> several other folks have been transported off to the hospital. once again some of those people were shot. some were injured by broken glass, and some folks were trampled because people started to panic as they ran out of that nightclub during the shooting. and once again ron was the sheriff that died in this incident. he was a 29 year vet. he planned on retiring shortly. he ran in, he was shot immediately by the gunman. he is survived by his wife and son. he was shot there on the scene but later died at the hospital. we will continue to follow this story, this breaking news store story out of southern california where a gunman walks into this bar and grill and opened fire and killed a number of people. we'll have more details coming up after the break.

news. checking in on your forecast which is pretty nice. >> i think we will continue it much more than just today too. we haven't had this pattern since the beginning -- we have had this pattern since the beginning of october. if anything today's pattern a little bit more prevalent as we look at inland air pushing out to the coast. that resulting in the red flag warnings which i mentioned moments ago. you can see downtown berkeley there in the distance. just clear skies out toward the coast. you can be sure with these winds making their way from the inland areas out to the coast, the marine layer will be staying out near the bay. windy conditions especially for the north bay. winds will gust as high as 45 miles per hour today. that is something you want to note before stepping outside. i though it's beautiful weather to be doing so. just take extra precautions as far as wild fires are concerned. now 60s and 70s for today's daytime highs in san francisco. very much so like yesterday up

and down the pacific shore too. mon terra up to 64. mill bray up to 70. also south san francisco. foster city up to 72. with san carlos and san mateo each at 75 degrees for your high. south bay looking similar to yesterday. just a couple degrees cooler than some. last georgia toes you will move to 75. sonoma among areas in that red flag warning today as you are in some of that elevated terrain and will be looking at the heaviest of winds too. vacaville and fairfield that is 76 and 78-degrees with sonoma also at 78 for a warm november daytime high. novato and san rafael up to 77

too. today will be the warmest of days in our forecast. after this tomorrow we stay pretty much unchanged. temperatures will cool down into next week. increase in cloud cover to note on monday and tuesday. even with that increase in cloud cover though, it's not looking like we have any chance of rain in sight. robin. >> thank you, john. we are starting off hot spot free which is a great way to start. no big trouble spots or major delays here leaving downtown oakland to downtown san francisco eight minutes to make your way over to fremont street. let's head over to the richmond- san rafael bridge. it is open and free here. a great ride across the span heading into the north bay. checking in on highway 101 across the golden gate. looking good so far with no big trouble spots to report. if you have head south, it's wide open. 19 minutes very quick to make your way from the pay gates to san francisco. here's a look at more numbers

for you. you take highway 4 you are off to a good start. a decent start at 14 minutes from 160 out to 242 in concord. 680 rolling south dublin to fremont. nimitz looking good at 19 minutes. that is to make your way from san leandro and hayward and 101 a great ride as well. we'll check more drive times coming up in a bit. now back to our breaking news story where 12 people were killed at borderline bar and grill in southern california. one of the people killed was a sheriff's deputy. eyewitnesses describe the shooter as a short man with a beard. he was wearing a trench coat and he had on glasses. he walked right in the front door. he shot a bouncer and another employee that was standing there at the front door and opened fire on the patrons in the club. eyewitness at the bar at the

time describes the chaos. >> i thought it was a joke when the shots started firing. and i know people there. i hope everybody is okay. >> he kept firing. i hear chairs being thrown out the window. people were trying to get out the window and the gunman he went behind the cash register and there was probably 12 shots before i got out the front door. and i go out, i come back in to see if my step dad is ohing. i hear him yelling and i ran. >> it looked like another guy coming in. i didn't focus too much attention on him. i just saw him out of the corner of my eye. i hear a shot rang off. i immediately looked at him and he continued shooting at the person behind the front desk. >> did you hear him say anything? or get any feel for what

exactly led up to it? >> i did not. i did not hear him say anything. i wasn't within earshot if he did. >> what did you do next? >> the next thing i did was try to get as many people behind cover. there was a pool table right there. as soon as that was done, there was a door to the smoking patio which leads to the parking lot. i went out there. there was a bunch of people that weren't quite sure anything was going on. i told everyone to immediately hop the fence and get out of there and followed after. >> how many people do you think were there that escaped in that way? >> escaped through that route? i would say most of the people did. either will through that way or the window -- either through that way or the windows. >> how packed was it? >> it's the time of year where it was not busy. it was average for a wednesday night during the school year.

there was 120 people there. >> there was that many people last night? >> yes. >> so a lot of people fled out. did you see any of the people that were wounded? >> yes. after i got out, i warned a chp officer that was right over here and he went in. after that i went back to find matt because we had separated. once we found him, ambulances started to arrive and shortly after that we saw four guys carrying another guy who was bleeding and they looked pretty exhausted because they had carried him all the way out. they were yelling at us. we ran over and helped take over and carried him to an ambulance and he had been shot underneath the left arm. >> reporter: at that point the gunman didn't know what the status was.

so very heroic. what were you thinking as you rushed around trying to help people? >> well, my career path is one that is helping people. and that is all that was going through my mind. i wanted to get back there and help as many people to safety as i can. and minimize any damage that can be done. >> reporter: did people you were there with that night, have you been able to touch base with them? >> most of them, yes. there is still a couple friends i have yet to hear from. >> reporter: thank you so much for joining us. >> hearing about this horrifying night from another witness here. as he said the club was packed with college students. about 120 students that were of course very surprised when the gunman came this this and opened fire. again 12 people are dead. a sheriff's deputy died in the shooting. he was one of the first to respond to the scene. a very brave man. he was a 29-year-old vet survived by his son and wife transported to the hospital and later died at the scene. the suspected gunman is also

dead. we don't know much about who he is, his age, where he is from, but of course this is an on going investigation. folks want to know if this is linked to terrorism, definitely not a surprise anymore. some of the people here that enjoy country music were also in las vegas during that mass shooting so they're having to relive another tragedy. we will continue to follow this story out of southern california. we'll take a quick break and we'll be right back.

beard. he came in wearing a dark trench coat, glasses, a ski mask, some witnesses say he had a handgun and smoke bombs. he opened fire, came through the front door. he shot a bouncer, another employee, and then he opened fire on the young folks that were there at the club. another eyewitness that was there at the bar at the time describes this as just a chaotic scene that unfolded. >> he was shooting everything from the speakers to everything. we just saw smoke and the shots taken off. we tried to get down as fast as we could and get out of there. even got down and freaked out and ran around. i told her to get down, get out. i said let's move, we've got to get out of here. we don't know where he is coming from. it was a semi automatic. i heard 18-20 rounds at a time. that is all i heard. >> our main concern is take cover, hoping that all of our

friends that were in there would get out. i didn't see anyone else that was down. but it was such a blur. i don't even know what to think of it still. >> for the local young adults that frequent borderline on this night, college night. a lot of people like to go there and have fun and shoot pool. i understand he was at the pool tables which is concerning because they are close to the front door when this went down. so that is concerning. >> once again 13 people are dead in this mass shooting. ron helis a sheriff's deputy. he was one of the responding officers to the scene. the gunman is dead as well. this all happened around 11:20 last night in ventura county. this place was packed with college students. they normally gather on wednesday nights be for what they call country night and they did not expect something like this to happen.

parents and other family members have started to gather here just outside of the scene that they have blocked off as they mourn the loss of their children and other family and friends. some folks were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. some were injured from glass and other flying debris. we'll take a look and get the latest response from other witnesses. and we will check in at the hospital with the latest as well. we'll have another update coming up.

[music] welcome back to the kron 4 morning news. we are following breaking news out of southern california where 12 people have been killed at the borderline bar and grill. just off of highway 101 during country night. this place was packed with young adults 18a lot of college students go there on wednesday night. police say one of the people killed was a sheriff's deputy. his name was ron helus.

he was a 29 year vet. he was a very brave man. he ran in and shot by the gunman. the gunman immediately opened fire. a lot of folks gathered near the intersection. family and friends formed a prayer circle. just this tears and shock by this shooting that happened last night at around 11:20 at this very popular bar and grill. we are hearing from some witnesses that we had about 120 people inside. they were having a good time listening to country music. the gunman came in, he opened fire, he shot the security guard and another employee that was stabbing there at door. once again the gunman is dead. this is an on going investigation. of course people have a lot of questions. was this terrorism? did he know people inside? we just know he came in, he was dressed this black, he had on a

trench coat, a ski mask. some witnesses say he had a handgun. some people broke windows when he opened fire. we will continue to track this story. we're hearing from witnesses about what they saw and what happened. police also held a press conference to give us a little update about what details that they have so far. let's listen in on this conference. >> a highway patrol officer and a sheriff made entry into the borderline because they heard shots being fired. and felt there might be additional victims inside. upon going through the front door, the sheriff sergeant was struck multiple times with gunfire. sergeant helus passed away at the hospital about an hour ago.

sergeant helus was on the force for 29 years. was looked into retiring in the next year or so. he was a morepark resident and survived by his wife and son. it's a horrific incident. it's part of the horrors happening in our country and everywhere. i think it's impossible to put any logic or sense to the senseless. we have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location. the only weapon we have found that we believed used was a handgun but it's still early on and we have not gone through the scene in detail yet. it is a horrific scene in there. there is blood everywhere. 11 victims. the suspect is 12 and sergeant helus makes 13. sergeant helus was totally committed. he gave his all and tonight as i told his wife he died a hero

because he went in to save lives. to save other people. >> back here looking at the intersection a live shot from southern california thousand oaks where this is still a developing story. and folks have a lot of questions and crews are still investigating, interviewing witnesses and some of the patrons that were at the club, at the hospital right now. some have gunshot wounds. some were injured by flying debris. other folks were trampled as they tried to flee the scene and get away from the gunman. once again the gunman is dead. it's unclear if he shot himself or took his own life. we don't have any details on who he is and why he did this if he knew anyone in the club or if this was terrorism. parents and other family members arriving to the scene with lots of questions. we'll continue to follow the story as we receive more details out of southern california this morning. back here at home, of course we

need to check in on weather and traffic so let's go over to the weather center now with john who has a look at your forecast. we are in for another dry one out there today. you can see the golden gate bridge stretching over the golden gate itself without any fog present out toward the coast or inland. we do have stronger winds today than we've had your monday, tuesday, nor your wednesday. so today a bit of a change in regards that we do have a red flag warning in effect. it took effect at 10:00 p.m. and lasting through the day today and take us into tomorrow. this higher fire danger will be seen in areas lit up in red from the north bay through the east bay. and up and down the peninsula too. some of areas lit up in red will be more vulnerable to some of the gh as 45 miles per hour. sustained at times of nearly 30 miles per hour. in areas like sonoma, atlas peak up to calistoga. all of these areas looking at that potential. some of the strongest winds as we work through the day today.

along with the strong winds, warm temperatures. we have very low humidity. look at how low it's dropping this afternoon. petaluma, sonoma falling below 10% as we roll through the afternoon. over night hours tonight it increases a little bit before again falling tomorrow morning. now temperatures are cool this morning, but they will be boosting back up into the 70s and a couple of 80s into the afternoon. 40s and 50s as of right now. the exception being novato and petaluma up in the north bay down into the 30s as you have gotten used to this week. moving into the afternoon, some of the 40s and 50s we are currently looking at will quickly boost to the 60s and 70s by the time we work toward 3:00 p.m.. sunny and warm yet again and windy conditions for quite a lot of us. i have more of your forecast straight ahead. picking up at the bay bridge toll plaza is. the drive into san francisco getting a little crowded. but a great ride across the

upper deck to downtown san francisco with no big trouble spots coming in. so it's a good time to take that drive. heading over to 92. checking in on the san mateo bridge. your drive out of hayward to the peninsula looks pretty good. i don't have any big trouble so thes. accidents or stalls. a very quick 13 minutes to make your way from the nimitz across the span and out to highway 101. let's head over to the richmond san rafael bridge and check in on westbound 580. this is also a good ride through the tolls across the span and out to 101 with no big trouble spots. just under ten minutes to make your way out to 101 and san rafael. taking a peek at traffic tracker. no accidents here or stalls on highway 680. it is a good commute rolling south. about 12 minutes so right on time to make your way from highway 4 out to the split in walnut creek and over to alamo and danville. 424 west 11 minutes out of

walnut creek through the caldecott heading over to the oakland maze. the east shore freeway is nice and quiet and so is 880. a big commute so far with no trouble spots leaving san jose eight minutes north. we'll head back to our breaking news story we've been following for you all morning long. another mass shooting out of southern california where 13 people are dead. 11 people that were inside of the nightclub, a sheriff's deputy, and the gunman. now this happened at borderline bar and grill. it was country night which happens every wednesday night. that event is normally attended by a lot of college students. we're talking about a lot of young adults that lived, worked in the area and attended school nearby. this is just off of highway 101. gunman walked in, opened fire. first shooting two people at the door. security guard and another employee from borderline bar and grill. and then he opened fire on the

crowd. we're told there are about 120 people inside when the gunman opened fire. some witnesses say he was dressed in all black. he had a trench coat. he had on a ski mask. witnesses say he had a handgun and smoke bombs. so as he fired those shots and threw the smoke bombs out, folks were trying to escape. it was very hard to see. not only are people suffering from gunshot wounds, but some were injured as they were fleeing the scene. they have gunshot wounds. they are injured from broken glass. some of them broke windows with bar tools to try to escape. let's hear from some of those people that were there at the time. >> he fired the first shot. i knew it was live. i knew it was real. and i thought it was a joke. so i pulled them down and got to cover. and looked up and he was moving to the right. the bouncer, just a young man.

joke. >> the shooting was on that side. our friends got the bar stools and started slamming it against the window so we could get out. that is how we were able to get out. they broke the window. they broke the window and we were able to climb out. >> we are back out live. this is a live look from the intersection just outside of the bar and grill where this all happened. and as we've been reporting, parents and other family members are still arriving. we've also heard reports that they have formed a circle, a prayer circle as they mourn the loss of all the folks that were killed in this horrific mass shooting. we're also talking about the sheriff's deputy that was shot in this incident. a veteran of the force who is survived by his son and his wife. he was one of the first responding officers to the scene. described as a hero. he was a 29 year vet and he

those that are transitioning into civilian job, is definitely seek out organization such as vets in tech. what you want to do is find someone who is able to mentor you and try to transcribe what you have learned and gained in the military and how it fits into the civilian field. a lot of times we don't know what militaries do. we have a lot of roads we may not be able to explain clearly. as a supervisor at pg&e, it's my job to protect public safety, keeping the powerlines clear while also protecting the environment. the natural world is a beautiful thing. the work that we do helps protect it. public education is definitely a big part of our job, to teach our customers about the best type of trees to plant around the powerlines. we want to keep the power on for our customers. we want to keep our communities safe. this is our community. this is where we live. we need to make sure that we have a beautiful place

-- we've been following since last night out of southern california. 11 people people killed inside of the club. one of the folks shot was a sheriff's deputy. and of course the gunman. that makes 13. a total of 13 that are dead. it's unclear if the gunman shot himself or if he was killed by police. but of course this is a developing story that we will continue to follow as we hear from witnesses as we hear from investigators that are still on the scene. we're also checking into the hospital where a lot of folks were transported. some with gunshot wounds. some hit with flying debris. limited details on the gunman, who this person is, his age, where he lives, did this. a lot of folks are asking, is this terrorism? crews are still trying to piece together all of the evidence and gather more details. as we receive that information, we will definitely pass it on. but another horrific scene here out of southern california. another mass shooting that the country has to deal with.

following for you out of southern california. thousand oaks. a mass shooting has claimed the lives of 13 people. and the 13th person is the gunman that died. it's unclear if he took his own life or killed by police. this all started at 11:20 last night inside of borderline bar and grill. which is a very popular place. especially for young adults. 18 and over. a lot of college students go there to enjoy country music on wednesday night. they were in there having a good time. we're hearing from witnesses the place was filled with 120 people or so when a gunman walked in and just opened fire without any warning. he shot a security guard at the door. another employee dressed in a trench coat. according to witnesses he had a handgun, he had some sort of smoke bomb devices that he threw in. and he just opened fire.

people panicked, some were shot, some were injured by flying debris. some were injured as they tried to escape. parents and other family members have been showing up at the scene. we've also heard from the sheriff's department about the deputy that was shot and killed. he was a veteran of the force. 29 years on the force. he was one of the first responding officers to the scene. described as a very brave man. he was shot upon arrival by this gunman. and we'll have more details coming up for you after the break.

more because this is a huge bar and grill. they have a dancing area where they sometimes teach line dancing. on the other side thhave different types of games, a wrap around area, 18 and older. this is a college night. so different types of the bar. so that's why it's devastating to hear that some of these young, young people were just dancing and then just fell to the ground. other people were laying over other people trying to protect them, so this is just mostly devastating for me because i went to college down there and lutheran university is down there, pepperdine, cal state university, northridge. a lot of people go there just to have a fun night. there's country line dancing and the fact that 11:00, 11:30 this broke out. i don't know how the person got

fun. this is 11:20 when the gunman opened fire. 18 and over and as we've talked to our own sara stinson who's been at that club when show was going to college, she said that -- show went to cal state north ridge. she said like last night it's packed with a lot of 18-year- olds who are excited to have fun at a bar because they complaint normally. >> pepperdine tweeted out. we're also learning information that's starting to come in through other news sources like the l.a. times. they have a source this has told them that authorities a law enforcement tells the times that the gunman was a 29-year- old man that he drove his mother's car to that bar and walked in with a .45 caliber hand gun and some type of smoke device. this is coming from a law

enforcement source. he said when he attacked, he said nothing. the gun was purchased in ventura county. he reloaded twice and had an extended magazine, which is illegal. that's how he could get off more than 30 shots or mormt i heard one man who got out of the bar with his life, was worried about his child and he broke down saying i should have gone back in because it takes some time to reload. i could have saved people. the guy seemed to be familiar with his weapon. he was able to reload for six seconds. it was silent for a few seconds and then the firing resumed. >> sara stinson said there's only one point of entry and exit.

some breaking windows and jumping out. a lot of the people who have been arriving at hospitals in the wake of all of this have had injuries all the way from injuries to bullets to also injuries with broken glass as they're jumping out windows and people were hang mad dashes to the only points. we did hear from several people who witnessed it all and described what happened next. >> i was on the dance floor dancing. then i heard the gunshot and saw him shot a couple more times. within a split second, everyone yelled get down. everyone pretty much dog piled on top of each other and it was silent for a couple seconds. then i'll of a sudden a couple guys who were closer to the bar, they got up and started

grill. a 29-year veteran of the ventura county sheriff's department, his name is ron helus. he was rushed to the hospital. unfortunately, he died from his gun wounds. he was one of the first responders to the scene and was shot shortly after arriving. he was pulled out by another officer. his friends, the ventura sheriff's department, he said that was his friend. he choked up talking about his friend who even the president this morning is calling him a hero. it was college night at the borderline bar and grill. 18 years and youngser were -- younger were allowed to go. authorities have been able to identify the gunman but they're

just learning new details in the wake of the shooting in thousand oaks. cal lutheran located less than 5 miles away has cancelled classes. >> also hearing from pepperdine university. their classes will continue, however they are confirming this morning they had students from receiver college and the school of law at the board alreadier line bar & grill when shots rang out and 11 people were killed. they're continuing to monitor the situation and confirming the safety of the students and keeping in contact with the affected parents this morning. keep it tuned to kron4. 11 people killed, one sergeant was killed and the shooter is dead as well.

will tran has the latest. >> let's talk about the sergeant that was killed. he was among the first responders to the scene. this went down around 11:20 last night. let me pull up a picture of the sergeant who's being called a hero including from donald trump on twitter. 29-year veteran. ron helus was shot multiple times and pulled from the scene by a fellow police officer and he was rushed to the hospital where he later died. i found out new information at 10:00 this morning so a little less than three and a half hours from now the body of ron helus, sergeant ron helus will be escorted out of the hospital. there will be a police procession. hundreds of officers obviously will be lined up there as his body is taken away and led to a funeral home where family and friends will finally get a chance to see him. he was set to retire next year.

beloved by the ventura sheriff's department. did so many things in the 29 years that he was there, including a bomb squad, working with the swat team. we got a chance to hear from colleagues a little earlier and here's what they said about the hero. >> i don't think there's anything more heroic than what he did. he went in there to save lives. he took device sif action and -- decisive action and it's a tragic loss for us and it's tragic, the gentleman who was speak being the things that went on inside the club, people inside took heroic action as well and this is just a horrific situation for them to face. i've known ron for -- we've been on for 29 years. we came on right around the same time and he's just -- always areally enthusiastic very energetic man and a true cop's cop.

he worked narcotics, investigative assignment and on the swat team for many years. this was in his blood. he had a natural instinct for for going after crooks and did it with enthusiastic and a great deal of -- enthusiasm and agreet deal of intelligence. he would spend time with his son. my heart goes out to the family. i can't imagine what they are going through right now. >> so you heard the colleague talk about the son and leaves behind a wife. there is the picture right there. president trump already taking to twitter thanking the brave police officers, the men and women and also pointing out the actions of ron had helus when -- ron helus. when announced to the public, there's the sheriff of the ventura sheriff's department he choked up saying he was a great guy and they were gym partners and we will try to carry that

live when the procession happens. we will stream that for you. but now we are learning more about the gunman. at this time the police are not releasing his name. they believe he committed suicide but until an autopsy, they don't know if he was killed by his own hands for a gun battle with police officers. you've been out on some scenes. i want to take a couple of live shots and hear from you how they investigate this type of thing. there are so many people waiting out the hospital and over at the thousand oaks teen center. this is as close as you can get to the bar at this intersection and they've not been able to contact loved ones who's bodies remain in the bar. there's a reason they don't disturb the evidence. let's talk about that so people understand why wouldn't they identify the victims to these people who are waiting? sorry, i think we can't --

there you go. >> they don't want them closer to the scene and this is a crime scene and it is hour richl and it is massive. there is a motion involved but they have training. they bring in the homicide investigators and bring in, in this case, they've asked for federal investigators to come in as well. they must preserve the crime scene. so unfortunately, a lot of the victims' bodies are still there. they have to take measurements. it is painstaking. i've been out there some times blinking back tears myself that the family and friends come up to you and ask you for information because we have direct contact with the authorities there. so they kind of use us for information. i just saw an interview from a man and apparently a lot of the parents are told to go to a certain center. this man and i'm a dad and it was hard to watch, he says i cannot find my son and it is tearing me apart. so it's very tough to be out there. you have to be patient and it is impossible to tell family

and friends and loved ones, be patient and let the process play out. right now that the search is over for any suspected gunman at this time. now, the focus is on the crime scene, the motive, the measurements. so much goes onto it and it is meticulous. this scene will be locked down for days to come and that is why the parents, family and friends are told to go to a gathering place. from there more than likely they will send a representative from the authorities to try their very best to give them the information at this point. you said it earlier, the tell tale sign is they cannot reach loved ones and we all have cell phones next to us and that's our heartbreaking part. >> i want to give folks the number in the bay area that have a lot of college students that go to the area and bar. there's an emergency hotline set up if you need help or information locating anyone that you're missing after this

6:40 and a really nice start to the morning. temperatures actually fairly mild compared to where they have been. clear skies as the sun rises over the bay area. temperatures not quite as cold adds yesterday. we've got 40s and 50s to kick off this morning. fremont at 58 right now and berkeley at 53. a couple 30s in the north bay stretching from santa rosa. some of the areas among the breezest as we push into the afternoon and along with the winds fire warning are in effect through tomorrow. it's not just the dry conditions but also the winds. relative humidity drops this afternoon. petaluma falling below 10%. atlas peak dropping to 6% later on today. as far as winds are concerned, is a notice ma, 28-miles per -- sonoma, 28-miles per hour gusting to 45-miles per hour in some of the exposed higher elevation areas. fire danger increased today

with the winds and dry conditions and with warmer than average temperatures too. winds carrying some warm dry air from the state's interior off shore keeping any sort of fog at bay today and temperatures out there for the day, pretty much the same as where we have been, a range of 60s and 70s. robin. checking back in on the bay bridge, it is packed. officially backed up through the maze on to 580 which is now solid from highway 24. traffic will improve on the span but heavier behind the plaza. look at the rich field bridge traffic is crawling on west 580 from harbor to the scene. clocking in at 12 minutes for the average. golden gate want a problem. a nice ride into and out of san francisco. an accident at westbound 24. the left lane is blocked so you can how traffic is building up quickly behind the scene. as i zoom out, here's the drive time 18 minutes and growing because of the crash walnut creek to oakland.

and -- i go out, i come back in to see if any stepdad is okay and hear him yelling and i ran. hearing from survivors of the attack in southern california that killed 13 people including the gunman who stormed in, really shot his way into this country music venue by killing the doorman first. >> and then the cashier. >> the cashier and then the dance floor packed with line dancers. college kids doing line dancing and playing pool and partying on a wednesday night when they allow 18-years-old and up into this huge venue in thousand oaks. >> you heard him talking about being there with his stepdad. and we heard other accounts by a father who was there with his son when the gunfire broke out and the inn stink was to protect his son and pulled -- instinctwas to protect his son and he was racked with guilt after the fact.

i should have gone back in and stayed longer while he was changing the clips i could have done something to prevent. he was literally brought to tears while listening from him as he was just wishing he could have done something to help out. >> maybe we have the sound bite. >> we have a different one coming up. that sound bite is still in my head and hearing that. it was college kids and families too. parents with their children there enjoying what would have been a fun night when chaos broke out. here now, another witness to what happened explains what they saw. >> so it was a normal wednesday night. i was with my friend matt and talking to some people. i had a clear line of sight of the bar and front desk where the shooter entered. looked like another guy coming in. i didn't focus too much attention on him. saw him out of the corner. he raised his arm and first shot went off and i thought it was someone pulling a prank with an m80 and i looked at him and he continued shooting at the person at the front desk.

after i got out i warned a chp officer who was right over here and he went in. after that i went back to find matt because we had separated. once we found him ambulances started to arrive and shortly after that, we saw four guys carrying another guy who was bleeding and they looked pretty exhausted they carried him all the way out and they were yelling at us, so we ran over and helped to take over and carried him to an ambulance and he had been shot underneath the -- the left arm. >> fired the first shot and i knew it was live and real. i thought -- my son thought it was a joke so i him down and got some cover and looked up and he was moving to the right. the shot the doorman and fwounser, just a -- bouncer and just a young man and he shot

the cashier, just a young girl. and then he started moving to the right. he wasn't looking at us. and he went into the office where all the cash and stuff is. he didn't say anything at all. he just started shooting. and i should have stayed while he chapged his clip but i was worried about my boy. but i should have stayed. i apologize to anybody who got hurt. we know the gunman reloaded witnesses say at least twice as he continued firing on all of these people that were -- a lotof young people from colleges. they were trying to break windows to get out. some we have reports of people who jumped out of the second floor windows to escape. there were people hiding in the attic. people playing dead, hunkered down underneath bar tables and underneath a pool table trying to escape this gunfire that

seemed not to stop. some witnesses say it felt like it was going on 5 or 10 minutes. all we know about the gunman -- here's another reason it was chaotic. he walked in with a gun but immediately through some sort of a smoke bomb as well. so that could have made it way more difficult for anybody to see or hear or know what was going on and enabled him to open fire on all of these defenseless kids who were gathered at the bar for a night of dancing. kids from miles around come to this bar regularly on wednesday nights. itnight where they invite all the kids from colleges 18-years-old and up to come to the bar from cal state north ridge and cal state channel islands, cal lutheran, which has cancelled classes. the closest college campus and pepperdine university also had kids in the bar that night. >> we've also heard an official statement from california governor jerry brown. we'll share that with you on the screen.
