was merciless in the town of paradise..thousands of burned vehicles still lining the roads and so much clean up to be done as the fire rages on.. however, i spoke with some people today who despite all the destruction..are thankful. destruction is virtually everywhere in the town of paradise..dozens of people have been killed and hundreds have been unaccounted for.. some homes have remained untouched while many others were not so lucky..debra barrett says she's counting her blessings...sot: i do thank god for a lot of everything that we do have... barrett and her family escaped the fire thursday night..today they were collecting supplies from the elks lodge in chico... she hopes to get back to her home and rebuild..sot: it's gonna take a long while but we can do it..resilience is not something the people of paradise are short on... someone taped up an american flag--it's standing tall over the rubble of what was a business...and the firefighters fighting the inferno are getting support from the community...signs line the street in front of the command center in chico... even the littlest supporters like 5 year old cooper are showing how much they care..he

new information about those killed in the butte county wildfire. one of the victims has been identified by his family as san francisco native. 63 year old ernie foss junior moved to paradise eight years ago after being priced out of the bay area. he was a musician and music teacher who used to teach students out of his home near haight street. his daughter says foss suffered from a medical condition that kept him bedridden. he and his dog were found dead outside his home. and foss's stepson, andrew burt, who you can see standing in this photo, acted has as foss's caregiver. he is still missing at this hour. foss's daughter says the power and phone lines were down at the home and there was know way they there was the home and there was know way they would have known about an evacuation order. ... (grant) and we have a closer look at exactly where the fire is burning right now. our ken wayne is in the newsroom with the details. ken? strong northeast strong northeast winds are

large army of fire fighters and police and sheriff's deputies that raced to the area to face the flames. in the early morning hours of last thursday, when the camp fire started... pge reported that it had thought about shutting down power lines in several counties due to extreme dry and high winds predicted. however, a pge spokesperson told kron four, that they decided against the public safety power shutoff,or psps as a preemptive move throughout butte county. now, pge is coming under intense scrutiny...i spoke with one attorney who was invoved in suing pge in the san bruno blast where 8 people died... he had scathing comments for pge in this latest situation. (take sot) joe cotchett, cotchett, pitre & mccarthy. why didn't they turn off the power, they could have, no. they choose profits over safety, and profits mean lining executives pockets. we reached pockets. lining executives pockets.

we reached out to pge, they say they are investigating. they have admitted to having problems with a transmission line near the origin of the camp fire. and, we are also learning a woman who lived inthe area says she received an email prior to the fire erupting from pge infroming her that pge crews needed to come on to her property, because quote, they were having problems with sparks" pge has declined to take about this specific issue in relation to the fire. miles... which is three square miles... which is three times the size of the city of san francisco.and now the peak fire. it broke out at peak fire. it broke out at around ten this morning and quickly spread to 75 acres and threatened homes. "the fire was right across the street and my husband here, calm, cool, and collected, was just watching. i'm like 'oh i've gotta go pack ."residents gave their homes a last dose of water before heading out, this one is not a flareup. it's a brand new start.... with an incredibly robust response from la city, county and ventura fire departments." on the hillside above the homes, helicopters dropped buckets of water on the flames as well as traffic on the 118. natair tankers doused the neighborhood with pink phos=check.it's kind of like a gelatin-based slurry that sticks to the shrubbery and really slows down the fire so firefighters can go in their and really make progress with hand tolls and hose lines.just a few miles to the south, modified seaplanes scooped up ocean water.they used it to fight the woolsey fireit has burned hundreds of homes and forced a quarter million people to flee.you know we thought we were ready. hose everything down, but when it came over this ridge behind us it was a hundred-foot wall of

tonight.. bishops are delaying votes on ways to combat sex abuse in the catholic church.(vicki) new ways of doing things were supposed to be decided this week... until they got word to postpone it. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us with more on why it's being put-off. this order came from the top. the vatican asking the u-s bishops to 'hold-off' until it can have its global meeting on sex abuse in february. roman catholic

bishops from across the u-s are gathering in baltimore this week for their annual meeting. and the child sex abuse scandal, that's been plaguing the church, was going to be a part of their agenda... to consider and vote on several steps to combat sex abuse including a new 'code of conduct' for themselves. the archbishop of baltimore says he and the other bishops are troubled and horrified by the decades of abuse by clergy. archbishop william lori / roman catholic archdiocese of baltimore: "we have to be held to the same high standard that we hold our priests and our lay employees and volunteers do. we should have the same standards and the same consequence." 0:16 archbishop william lori says any church leader guilty of sex abuse actions should be punished. one of the plans... are for the bishops to possibly create a third- party independent review board to look into allegations against bishops. barrett says she's counting her blessings...sot: theres so much..so many more people worse off than me..theres people that died.barrett and her family escaped the fire thursday night..today they were collecting supplies from the elks lodge in chico...she hopes to get back to her home and rebuild..sot: gotta keep looking forward and not back though. we have to make new futures..new plans..resilience is not something the people of paradise are short on... someone taped up an american flag--it's standing tall over the rubble of what was a business...and the firefighters fighting the inferno are getting support from the community...signs line the street in front of the coand center in chico... even the littlest supporters like 5 year old cooper are showing how much they care..he had this message for them.. sot: thank you for being so brave firefighters.. cooper says he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up so that he can do the work these brave men and women do everyday..reporting live in chico..dan thorn kron 4 news.

(ken) one of the people killed in the camp fire has been identified by family as 63- year old ernie foss junior. foss was a san francisco native who moved to paradise 8 -years ago. kron4's maureen kelly has new information about the victim, and his stepson who remains missing at this hour. ernie foss junior's daughter calls the loss of her father devestating. the 63 year old widower was a cancer survivor who suffered from an illness that kept him bedridden and requiring oxygen. he was found dead outside his home on edgewood lane along with his dog bernice. his daughter believes foss may have been dragged out of the house my his stepson and caregiver, seen standing in this photo. that stepson, andrew burt is one of the many

missing, which is compounding the family's grief. this is a photo that foss posted on facebook of his front yard in paradise. other bodies were found on that same dead end street. foss's daughter says his power and phone lines were down and there was no way he would have known about an evacutation order nor would he been able to request the medical transport he would have needed. the san francisco native moved up to paradise after being priced out of the bay area eight years ago. her daughter says her father was a musician who taught music lessons out of their apartment near haight street. according to his facebook page he had many good memories from when he toured with a band called raine daze. the macateer high graduate also studied and later worked at heald college. he leaves behind two living children and several grandchildren.maureen kelly kron4 news (pam) (pam) once again people are mobilizing to help fire victims.. groups like the red cross and the salvation army ... are encouraging people to help with monetary donations.(ken) but one north bay

organization that collected food and clothing during the tubbs fire is doing it again for fire victims in butte county. kron 4's dan kerman has more from petaluma. (pkg) since friday pep housing in petaluma has been a collection point for people wanting to donate to victims of the camp fire sot sharlene dillon/ san francisco resident 14-21i have friends afftected in chico and iends on the ground trying to help and after the last fire in santa rosa i wanted to do whatever i could to helpand that feeling of wanting to pay it forward was common among those donatingsot sarah rhodes/welfare league of sonoma county 28-32we were helped last year, its our turn to turn around and help the nextpep housing is a non profit corporation which provides affordable housing for low income seniors and veterans... this is not their first time doing this.sot mary stompe/pep housing 45-55we helped last year iwth the fires in santa rosa , we found a lot of seniors and vets were effected so we collected from the community to help people outpep housing is only collecting new clothing, as well as food, towels and toiletries among other things... sotit was important

this forecast today -- showing the hazardous levels of smoke in the atmosphere --- making their way from the camp fire and blanketing the bay...(pam) chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with more.. on air quality.. lawrence karnow: smoke from the camp fire cintinues to bring poor air quality to the bay area. unhealthy air continues to sit over most of the bay area. highs today were in the 60s and 70s. we are seeing some changes in the weather as high pressure is finally breaking down. a few more high clouds will move across our skies tomorrow and it will still be hazy. highs tomorrow will be in the 60s and low 70s. offshore winds will bring more smoke to the bay area the next two days but it looks the the air quality should improve after that.

(grant) we just got an update from cal fire. the fire has is up to 117-thousand acres now... but containment is up to 30 percent. 29 people are dead and 228 are still missing. more than 64-hundred homes have been destroyed and 15-thousand are still threatened tonight. 260 businesses have been destroyed. this is a new map showing the homes damaged and desroyed... (grant) she joins us now live from chico. ashley... oday marks the fifth day thousands of evacuees have been out of their home((pkg)) ((nats))free hot meals..clothes.. and water... the chico walmart parking lot is now packed with a small community of campfire evacuees and volunteers.(daniel hansen- paradise evacuee) "they gave me a pair of pants, they went into walmart and bought me a

pair of pants, he didn't have to do that for me but he did." a whole section of the parking lot is dedicated to clothing donations....fire victims sort through the racks... as more community members drive in to drop off more supplies..."want a mask?"one man walking around the parking lot hands out masks...((isaiah rosi- volunteer)) "it's really amazing how a community like this can come together when a family or a town needs the help."evacuees walk around dazed by their displacement, but thankful for the people taking the time to help... obtained 911 dispatch records... listen to dispatchers talk about the hazardous power lines fire fighters experienced . (take vo/so)sound full - stand by.... that scene and those words repeated over and over again, by the large army of fire fighters and police and sheriff's deputies that raced to the area to face the flames in the camp fire. in the early morning hours of last thursday, when the camp fire started... pge reported that it had thought about shutting down power lines in several counties due to extreme dry and high winds predicted. however, a pge spokesperson told kron four, that they decided against the public safety power shutoff,or psps as a preemptive move throughout butte county. now, pge is coming under intense scrutiny...i spoke with one attorney who was invoved in suing pge in the san bruno blast where 8 people died... he had scathing comments for pge in this latest situation. joe cotchett, cotchett, pitre & mccarthy. why did they not turn off the power? they could have, now people are dead. attorey joe cotchett continued to blast the utility - cotchett. they choose profit over safety. and kron four news is learning this... late monday, a woman says she received an email last week,

where pge informed her they needed to come onto her property because quote, they were having problems with sparks relating to transmission lines. back to terisa estacio live) we reached out to pge, they admitted last week they had some sparks on a transmission line... they say the cause is certainly under investigation as for what started the camp fire. calfire is also saying there is no cause that has been determined yet. te (ken) we're also (ken) te yet. determined yet. te

(ken) we're also following a couple of other major fires in california. some residents in malibu are getting their first look at the destruction caused by the woolsey fire.(pam) there is also a new fire which is gaining ground and threatening homes.. it is called the peak fire. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us with the latest on these fires in southern california. here's a map of the southern california fires all burning in ventura county. although, the woolsey fire here is also burning in l-a county... the hill fire is burning over here... and today, a new fire popped-up... called the peak fire... and it had people quickly evacuating. this fire started just before ten this morning... in the corriganville area... just

south of the 118 freeway. many people, evacuating the area before the emergency message even went out.karla pelletier / resident:"when the fire was right across the street, my husband here who is calm, cool and collected, just watching, i'm like, oh, i've got to go pack and get ready in case we were going to be evacuated." 0:12 and look at this video... this is the santa susana pass, which runs somewhat parrelell to the 118. the drivers trying to avoid the fire... but getting soaked in the process.getting soaked in the process. so far no reports of damage or injuries. damage or injuries. switching to the woolsey fire... also in ventura county. this is new drone video of the fire's destruction in malibu. you can see, some homes were spared... while there's nothing left of the homes around them. crews are still battling the woolsey
