am not going to make it out of here. there's just flames everywhere and i don't know how to, i don't know what to do. and he said don't die run if you're going to die, die fighting.">( robin ) the camp wildfire is now the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. fire crews and rescue teams making some of the most unthinkable discoveries ... as they continue to comb through the damage.the dead have been found in burned out cars ...or next to their cars.. and in the smoldering ruins of their homes... and the search for more bodies continues. 42 people have died. 13 of those remains were found yesterday. more than 64-hundred homes have been destroyed... though the overall number of structures destroyed surpasses 7-thousand. the fire has burned 117- thousand acres. and is 30- percent contained. ( robin ) and the effect of this devastating fire continues to be felt locally

as smoke smothers the bay area. kron4's j-r stone has more. the smoke has yet to clear in paradise california but the extent of the devastation is heartbreaking. thousands of homes and businesses gone.sot friend chris....nomatthew chris....nosot friend chris....nomatthew springs home was destroyed in the camp fire. he doesn't have pictures of what it looks like but says it is a total loss. in fact his family has taken a huge hit. this is what his brother dan's home looks like. another total loss. matthew though says it was about getting out and saving themselves.sot saw that plume....just booked plume....just bookedmonday

recovery crews found 13 additional bodies within the camp fire debris. bringing the total number of people killed to 42. matthew says there have been stories about people killed because they kept packing instead of leaving.sot oc: i'll will take some time but i'll

do itj.r. there was a fear that a third brother had lost his home as well. i went to his home this evening and it is still standing. j.r. stone kron 4 new ( robin )( robin )( robin ) thousands of acres burned ... and just 30 percent of the camp fire contained. some help is coming from outside california. kron 4's alecia reid tells us how much help are we talking about. help is flooding in from california .... from alameda county .... teams from oakland, hayward, berkeley, fremont, livermore-pleasanton, alameda, piedmont, albany, as well as the east bay regional park district fire department are up north this hour.it's not just firefighters to battle the blaze ... they also need :strike teams, task forces, water tender crews, and overhead crews ....a

numbber of those strike teams in butte county came from cities and counties all over california.there are also coronor teams from all across the state, as well.cal fire says they're taking as much help as they can get.sot - here are some other fire oregon nevada utahh, and all the way from south dakota. we appreciate them coming all the way across the country to help defend your community and your lives. ( robin ) that was alecia reid reporting. and that's not all --- a group of 200 firefighters also left from texas yesterday to help battle the fires.and there are more than 2-thousand volunteer inmate firefighters helping out. ( robin )there is growing anger over the fire and some are pointing fingers at p-g- &-e power lines as a possible

cause of the fire in butte county. this, as new information is revealing how firefighters first on the scene ... responded to dispatchers.. kron four's terisa estacio has more. (take vo/so)sound full - stand by.... that scene and those words that scene and those words repeated over and over again, by the large army of fire fighters and police and sheriff's deputies that raced to the area to face the flames in the camp fire. in the early morning hours of last thursday, when the camp fire started... pge reported that it had thought about shutting down power lines in several counties due to extreme dry and high winds predicted. however, a pge spokesperson told kron four, that they decided against the public safety power shutoff,or psps as a preemptive move throughout butte county. now, pge is coming under intense scrutiny...i spoke with one attorney who was invoved in suing pge in the san bruno blast where 8 people died... he had scathing comments for pge in this latest situation.

prevailed so far this year. but a developing 'el nino' could quench our state's thirst for water. but just because it's an el nino, it doesn't necessarily mean we will see lots of rain. chief meterologist lawrence karnow explains. (track 1: 1st take) (video of hot, dry weather and natsounds of wildfires) it was a summer of scorching temperatures and some of the largest fires in california history. for 7 of the last 10 years, california has suffered through a severe drought. in fact, from 2011 to 2014, we've had the driest period since records began in the 1800s. (track 2: 1st take) (videos of dry brush and fires) it's no surprise that parched land covered with dead trees and brush have provided plenty of fuel for wildfires to sweep across the state. (natsound of fires)(track 3: 2nd take) (el nino globe graphic) and with an el nino forecast to develop this fall and winter, hopes are high for a lot of rain.(natsound of rain)(track 4: 1st take) (el nino animation graphic) el nino is a warming of the equatorial waters in the central and eastern pacific. it can change weather patterns all across the globe.(track 5: 1st take) (natsound of flooding) when we think of an el nino, flooding rain and

nino events give us a little clue. the average of the last 25 weak el ninos brings slightly below normal rain for the state. ( robin ) there was talk it might be re-scheduled ... but the 49ers' monday night football game did get started as scheduled .... despite poor air quality in the south bay .. ( robin ) dedicated fans waited for the gates to open monday afternoon. among

those fans -- paradise high school football players. the niners hosted the team ... giving them a badly needed break from all the devastation after their town was destroyed by the wildfire. ( robin ) the 49ers said the nfl, which is in charge of cancelling or postponing a game, would not act unless the air quality index was 200 or above for several hours on game day (robin) still ahead on the kron four morning news... as more and more people are forced to evacuate, evacuation centers are continuing to fill up.we'll visit some and see how much room is left. the camp fire leaves behind scorched vehicles and homes in the town of paradise...dozens of people have been killed and hundreds have been unaccounted for..some houses have remained untouched while many others were not so lucky..debra barrett says she's counting her blessings...sot: theres so much..so many more people worse off than me..theres people that died.barrett and her family escaped the fire thursday night..today they were collecting supplies from the elks lodge in chico...she hopes to get back to her home and rebuild..sot: gotta keep looking forward and not back though. we have to make new futures..new plans..resilience is not something the people of paradise are short on... someone taped up an american flag--it's standing tall over the rubble of what was a business...and the firefighters fighting the inferno are getting support from the community...signs line the street in front of the command center in chico... even the littlest supporters

like 5 year old cooper are showing how much they care..he had this message for them.. sot: thank you for being so brave firefighters.. ( robin ) shelters for the evacuees are packed ... many are at capacity. monday, marked the fifth day that thousands of evacuees have been out of their homes because of the camp fire. a whole section of the parking lot at walmart in chico, is dedicated to clothing donations.... fire victims sort through the racks... as more community members drive in to drop off more supplies... evacuees say, they are thankful for the people taking the time to help... volunteers tell us, this free market place in the walmart parking lot has been up and running the last couple of days... volunteers say, they are prepared to be here for as long as needed. ( robin ) the poor air quality in the bay area is forcing schools to cancel outdoor and indoor sports practices. school officials at the branson school in the city of ross in marin -- cancelled football practices and games during championships. coaches at the school say, it is not safe for kids to be exercising in the smokey air. a senior football player says, their team made the playoffs this year, which is a big deal for them ( robin ) the next ( robin ) the next

scheduled playoff game has been cancelled twice ... due to the poor air quality. ( robin ) when it comes to covering your face to prevent breathing in smoke from the fire, we are learning that some masks will not get the job done. in fact health officials say there are time limits...even if you do have the proper respirator mask. they say using bandanas or a t-shirts as masks are ánotá effective and in some ways it could make it more difficult to breathe. you may see some people outside wearing surgical masks, the professionals say these masks won't protect you either. ( robin ) however this n-95 mask on the other hand áwillá prevent up to 95% of particulate matter from getting into your lungs. health experts say you should change it every hour or so.

( robin ) walmart is planning to hire more military spouses. the retailer announced a new program monday... it is called 'the military spouse connection." it gives hiring preference to those married to active duty military personnel. walmart's c-e-o and president says military spouses are 'unsung heroes' and that the company wants to honor and help them find a job, or build

a career. the news comes as walmart reports hiring more than 2-hundred-12 thousand veterans since starting a similar program for returning military personnel. ( robin ) the federal government has updated its guidelines for physical activity ... the department of health and human services issued the first new guidelines in the last decade. americans are not getting the exercise they need, costing the health care system more than 100-billion dollars each year ... and people can dramatically improve their health by moving more, and sitting less. that is not necessarily groundbreaking... but a review of several years of new research says, if you have a desk job -- you do not have to quit. you should move more when you are not at work. ( robin ) if you take vitamin d or omega three supplements to prevent heart attacks or cancer... it may not help. according to a new study... researchers followed a group of people who

were randomly assigned a daily dose of each, for five years. they found there was no difference between those taking the supplements and those taking a placebo. researchers say there's no reason to stop taking the vitamins--fish oil and vitamin-d aren't harmful and may have other benefits. just talk to your doctor before you start. you can read more about the trial -- known as vital -- in saturday's new england journal of medicine. risking their lives to help stop the fires burning right now in california. one deputy continues to answer the call.. even after losing everything. jessica mench has his story of survial. as the camp fire raged through paradise, colusa police sgt. jarrod hughes knew he had to get out fast."we just started packing. i saw the flames, i went down the road for a second," hughes recalled sunday. "saw the flames, saw how close they were. we just threw the animals and a suitcase and a backpack in the truck."all he could think about was getting his 14-year-old son, austin, to safety."it was chaos. people were just abandoning animals and cars, running," he said.he made it out of his hometown, making sure his son was ok. then he went right back to

work."i get my uniform and my patrol car and head back up to help," hughes told fox40.he spent the rest of the day and night helping with evacuations while his own home burned. "it's my home. i loved it there," hughes said.but even after learning he had lost everything he was still out there working. he has been focused on finding the people missing and those who died. "it's my community, it's where i grew up. it's something i absolutely had to do," hughes said. "there was no question about it. it was get my family to safety so i can get in and get back up there and help everybody else."he was not alone. the butte county sheriff's office estimated more than 30 of their deputies lost homes in the fire but they were still reporting for duty.hughes was just thankful his family made it out alive. "but my heart breaks for the ones that didn't," he said."i plan on rebuilding," hughes said. "hopefully everybody builds. we'll survive." ( robin ) we're also following a

couple of other major fires in california. some residents in malibu are getting their first look at the destruction caused by the woolsey fire. and a new fire broke out in the south and was gaining ground and threatening homes .. it is called the 'peak fire'. ( robin ) here's a map of the southern california fires all burning in sputhern california although, the woolsey fire is also burning in l-a county... the hill fire is burning to the north... and yesterday, a new fire popped- up... called the peak fire... and it had people quickly evacuating. ( robin ) th peak fire started just before ten monday morning... just south of the 118 freeway. many people, evacuating the area before the emergency message even went out. < karla pelletier / resident:"when the fire was right across the street, my husband here who is calm, cool and collected, just watching, i'm like, oh, i've got to go pack and get ready in case we were going to be evacuated.">(

robin ) and look at this video... this is the santa susana pass, which runs somewhat parrelell to the 118. the drivers trying to avoid the fire... but getting soaked in the process. so far no reports of damage or injuries. ( robin ) switching to the woolsey fire... also in ventura county. this is new drone video of the fire's destruction in malibu. you can see, some homes were spared... while there's nothing left of the homes around them. crews are still battling the woolsey fire... so far, 2 people have died, more than 90-thousand acres have burned and right now, it's 20 percent contained. residents have been allowed to go home in some areas... but 200-thousand people still remain evacuated. the cause of the woolsey fire is under investigation. year that the speedway has put on some kind of holiday display.but the first year it's used this new tech.and all the money raised by the display --- benefits local children in need. ( james ) we begin with our continuing coverage of the devastating camp fire burning in butte county. officials say 42 people have now died in the fire making it the deadlist fire in state history. more than 64-hundred homes have been destroyed. the fire has burned 117-thousand acres and is now 30-percent contained. ( james ) this morning we are learning about one of the victims who was killed in the camp fire. san francisco native ernie foss moved to paradise eight years ago. his daughter says he was a cancer survivor who suffered from an illness that kept him bedridden and requiring oxygen. foss was found outside of his home.. and his daughter believes this stepson may have dragged foss out of the home. foss' stepson andrew burt... seen here... is also now missing.

( darya ) crews in paradise are working to allow people back into the areas clear of the fire to check on their properties. to do that they have to clear the roads of all the abandonded and burned cars that are on the side of the road. ( darya )( darya ) there will be a website set up where you can locate and identify your car. there is a special team being brought in from sacramento to identify vehicles burned beyond recognition. we have the website to locate your car on our webstie at kron 4 dot com. ( james ) there is growing

( james ) we are also learning a

woman received an email last week where p-g-and-e informed her that needed to come onto her property because quote they were having problems with sparks relating to transmission lines. p-g-and-e has not commented this specific issue related to the fire. ( darya ) right now there are 51-hundred firefighters battling the camp fire... just about every county along the coast is sending help north. many of the crews helping in butte county came from the bay area. team from alameda county.. oakland... berkeley.. and the east bay regional park district fire department just to name a few. but its not just in state crews going to butte county.. many other states are sending help. ( darya ) just yesterday a group of

200 firefighters left from texas. and there are more than 2-thousand volunteer inmate firefighters helping out. ( james ) a majority of the bay area continues to be under a "code red" meaning the air is unhealthy to breathe. ( darya ) kron4's will tran is live in santa rosa where schools are canceled today because of the smoke. wildfire smoke from the camp fire in butte county continues to blanket the bay area with unhealthy air today and the haze is expected to linger, air quality officials said. the hazardous smoke has created unhealthy conditions for much of the

region. the district's air quality map at baaqmd.gov, updated every hour, showed much of the region in "unhealthy" residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities and to limit exposure to unhealthy air by closing windows and doors. those with heart or lung disease should stay inside and limit their physical activity.

( darya ) we are also tracking the fires in southern california as a third fire started yesterday just off a highway in ventura county. the peak fire the peak fire broke out

next to the santa susana pass near simi valley... you can see drivers trying to get safely around the fire... firefighters were able to contain that fire. switching to the woolsey fire.. 2 people have died.. the fire has grown to more than 93-thousand acres and this morning is 30-percent contained. some residents have been able to return home but 200-thousand people still remain evacuated. ( darya ) the hill fire that's also buring in ventura county. the fire has grown to just over 45-hundred acres and is 85-percent contained. crews are still working against the santa ana winds and a red flag warning is still in effect for the area. ( james ) fire fighters in concord are investigating a

fire that they think was started by a model rocket. here is video of the fire last night off of backwood court in concord. crews say they found this model rocket near the site of the fire. officials say fire season is not over and to use extreme caution outdoors. ( james ) police in mountain view are investigating a smash and grab spree outside of the century cinema movie theater. on friday police were called out for reports of an auto burglary in the parking lot. when they arrived on scene more people came forward with a similar experience. in total police found 19 cases of smash and grabs. they say the burglars smashed a window and then looted the car. polcie say there were no witnessesand they think the burglars drove around the parking lot hitting the cars before leaving the area. ( darya ) a woman's death

in belmont is under investigation after her body was found in the street. police responded to the area of cipriani boulevard and newlands avenue just after 7 yesterday morning and foudnt he woman just south of newlands avenue. police say she was walking north along cipriani boulevard prior to being found in the street. the woman reveived emergency aid and was taken to the hospital but did not survive. ( darya ) back to our continuing coverage of the deadly camp fire in butte county. first responders are risking their lives to help stop the fires burning right now. one deputy continues to answer the call.. even after losing everything. jessica mench has his story of survial. as the camp fire raged through paradise, colusa police sgt. jarrod hughes knew he had to get out fast."we just started packing. i saw the flames, i went down the road for a

second," hughes recalled sunday. "saw the flames, saw how close they were. we just threw the animals and a suitcase and a backpack in the truck."all he could think about was getting his 14-year-old son, austin, to safety."it was chaos. people were just abandoning animals and cars, running," he said.he made it out of his hometown, making sure his son was ok. then he went right back to work."i get my uniform and my patrol car and head back up to help," hughes told fox40.he spent the rest of the day and night helping with evacuations while his own home burned. "it's my home. i loved it there," hughes said.but even after learning he had lost everything he was still out there working. he has been focused on finding the people missing and those who died. "it's my community, it's where i grew up. it's something i absolutely had to do," hughes said. "there was no question about it. it was get my family to safety so i can get in and get back up there and help everybody else."he was not alone. the butte county sheriff's office estimated more than 30 of their deputies

lost homes in the fire but they were still reporting for duty.hughes was just thankful his family made it out alive. ( darya ) shelters for the evacuees are packed ... many are at capacity. yesterday marked the fifth day that thousands of evacuees have been out of their homes because of the camp fire. a whole section of the parking lot at walmart in chico, is dedicated to clothing donations.. fire victims sort through the racks as more community members drive in to drop off more supplies. evacuees say they are thankful for the people taking the time to help.

this.">( darya ) volunteers tell us this free market place in the walmart parking lot has been up and running the last couple of days... and volunteers say they are prepared to be here for as long as needed. ( james ) animals are also affected by the massive camp fire. the north valley animal disaster group in chico says they are currently caring for almost 15-hundred animals. rocket dog rescue in oakland says they are heading up to chico with supplies for the shelters are full and bay area residents can help by fostering and adopting animals here to make room for the butte county animals that will make their way to the bay area.

experiencing another round of dangerous wildfires... but a developing 'el nino' could be good news. meterologist john shrable is joining us with a special report which looks into this year's el nino forecast..( john ) one of the most common questions asked every year is how much rain will we get this season. chief meterologist lawerence karnow takes a look at what we could see. (track 1: 1st take) (video of hot, dry weather and natsounds of wildfires) it was a summer of scorching temperatures and some of the largest fires in california history. for 7 of the last 10 years, california has suffered through a severe drought. in fact, from 2011 to 2014, we've had the driest period since records began in the 1800s. (track 2: 1st take) (videos of dry brush and fires) it's no surprise that parched land covered with dead trees and brush have provided

plenty of fuel for wildfires to sweep across the state. ( james ) this morning we are learning about one of the victims who was killed in the camp fire. san francisco native ernie foss moved to paradise eight years ago. his daughter says he was a

cancer survivor who suffered from an illness that kept him bedridden and requiring oxygen. foss was found outside of his home.. and his daughter believes his stepson may have dragged foss out of the home in an effort to try and save him. foss' stepson andrew burt... seen here... is also now missing. ( darya ) the life-or- death-experience of escaping the flames of the camp fire is something evacuees will never forget. steve large has the story of one woman who recorded her evacuation on video. a heart-pounding video showing a paradise woman's evacuation from paradise has now been viewed more than three million times."i mean it's always going to be hard to see paradise burn like that, but i am glad that i have the video," paradise evacuee brynn parrott chatfield said.the heart-pounding video shows flames surrounding chatfield's suv. with her husband jeremy behind the wheel, steering through the flames, she begins to pray."heavenly father,

please help us," chatfield said in the video. "please help us to be safe. i am thankful for jeremy and his willingness to be brave."the life-or-death-experience is now seared into chatfield's mind."we didn't know what was coming next," chatfield said. replaying the video brings the emotions back all over again. the chatfield's have learned their home did burn down, as did their business. but the family, mom, dad, and their three girls are safe. "thousands of people made a similar drive like that," chatfield said. "thousands of people experienced that exact same thing, or even worse."a wild escape captured on camera and watched around the world. "i think all of paradise has that sense of community because we all did this together, chatfield said. "and we understand what others have gone through."the chatfield's are currently staying in truckee with more family who also lost homes. like other evacuees, they have not been allowed back into paradise to see their burned home.they have been told they will not be able to go back in until sometime after thanksgiving. ( darya ) crews in paradise are

working to allow people back into the eas clear of the fire to check on their properties. to do that they have to clear the roads of all the abandonded and burned cars that are on the side of the road. there will be a website set up where you can locate and identify your car. you can find the link to the website at kron 4 dot com. ( james ) there is growing anger over the fire and some are pointing fingers at p-g- and-e power lines as a possible cause of the camp fire. last thursday when the camp fire started p-g- and-e reported that is had thought about shutting off power lines in several communities due to extreme dry ather and the high winds that were predicted. however the utility company decided against the shut off in butte county. we are also learning a woman received an email last week where p-g- and-e informed her that needed to come onto her property because quote they were having problems with sparks relating

to transmission lines. p-g-and-e has not commented this specific issue related to the fire. ( james ) right now there are 51-hundred firefighters battling the camp fire... just about every county along the coast is sending help north. many of the crews helping in butte county came from the bay area. team from alameda county.. oakland... berkeley.. and the east bay regional park district fire department just to name a few. but its not just in state crews going to butte county.. many other states are sending help. just yesterday a group of 200 firefighters left from texas. and there are more than 2-thousand volunteer inmate firefighters helping out. ( darya ) we are also tracking the fires in southern california as a third fire started yesterday just off a highway in ventura county. the peak fire broke out next to the santa susana pass near simi valley... you can

see drivers trying to get safely around the fire... firefighters were able to contain that fire. switching to the woolsey fire.. 2 people have died.. the fire has grown to more than 93-thousand acres and this morning is 30-percent contained. some residents have been able to return home but 200-thousand people still remain evacuated. ( darya ) the hill fire that's also buring in ventura county. the fire has grown to just over 45-hundred acres and is 85-percent contained. crews are still working against the santa ana winds and a red flag warning is still in effect for the area. ( james ) fire fighters in concord are investigating a fire that they think was

started by a model rocket. here is video of the fire last night off of backwood court in concord. crews say they found this model rocket near the site of the fire. officials say fire season is not over and to use extreme caution outdoors. ( james ) police in mountain view are investigating a smash and grab spree outside of the century cinema movie theater. on friday police were called out for reports of an auto burglary in the parking lot. when they arrived on scene more people came forward with a similar experience. in total police found 19 cases of smash and grabs. they say the burglars smashed a window and then looted the car. polcie say there were no witnessesand they think the burglars drove around the parking lot hitting the cars before leaving the area. california faced a new challenge when a third fire broke on the los angeles and ventura county line.( james ) take a look at this map showing the fires.the peak fire forced the shut down of highway118 through simi valley. that fire is now out. ryan o'donnell shows us the fast response from fire crews when it broke out. "the fire was right across the street and my husband here, calm, cool, and collected, was just watching. i'm like 'oh i've gotta go pack ."residents gave their homes a last dose of water before heading out, this one is not a flareup. it's a brand new start.... with an incredibly robust response from la city, county and ventura fire departments." on the hillside above the homes, helicopters dropped buckets of water on the flames as well as traffic on the 118. natair tankers doused the neighborhood with pink phos=check.it's kind of like a gelatin-based slurry that

( james ) we are continuing our coverage of the devastating camp fire burning in butte county. officials say 42 people have now died in the fire making it the deadlist fire in state history. more than 64-hundred homes have been destroyed. the fire has burned 117-thousand acres and is now 30-percent contained. ( darya ) this morning a majority of the bay area including the south bay is under a "code red" for unhealthy air conditions. ( james ) kron4's yoli aceves is live in san jose with a look at the conditions there. wildfire smoke from

the camp fire in butte county continues to blanket the bay area with unhealthy air today and the haze is expected to linger, air quality officials said. the hazardous smoke has created unhealthy conditions for much of the region. the district's air quality map at baaqmd.gov, updated every hour, showed much of the region in "unhealthy" residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities and to limit exposure to unhealthy air by closing windows and doors. those with heart or lung disease should stay inside and limit their physical activity. activity.

( darya ) shelters for the evacuees are packed ... many are at capacity. yesterday marked the fifth day that thousands of evacuees have been out of their homes because of the camp fire. a whole section of the parking lot at walmart in chico, is dedicated to clothing donations.. fire victims sort through the racks as more community members drive in to drop off more supplies. evacuees say they are thankful for the people taking the time to help. the volunteers say they are here for as needed. ( james ) the devastation in paradise is also affecting the firefighters who are working to put out the flames.

david hawks has served as the fire chief for paradise for the last five years. now he says 90 percent of the town is in rubble. even his childhood home is lost.

( james ) animals are also affected by the massive camp fire. the north valley animal disaster group in chico says they are currently caring for almost 15-hundred animals. rocket dog rescue in oakland says they are heading up to chico with supplies for animals. volunteers say the shelters are full and bay area residents can help by fostering and adopting animals here to make room for the butte county animals that will make their way to the bay area. rocket dog says they plan on bringing a number of dogs back from butte county this week. for more information on how to help the animals ... head to kron 4 dot com. ( james ) the poor air quality in the bay area is forcing schools to cancel outdoor and indoor sports practices. school officials at the branson school in the city of ross in marin -- cancelled football practices and games during championships. coaches at the school say, it is not safe for kids to be exercising in the smokey air. a senior and football player says their team was in the middle of playoffs when the bad air quality disrupted their flow. < we never been in a playoff before this one. obviously a lot of excitement for the school and for the team.it's the championships and we've been training for this the whole summer.its our moment to win something for the school and for ourselves. >( james )
