tonight at five: search crews are now fully engaged in the awful process of trying to locate the bodies of victims killed in the butte county wildfire. that fire is already the deadliest in state history -- and the death toll is expected to rise. hello i'm grant lodes.(vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis. hundreds of people remain missing tonight. 42 people have been killed. so far the fire has burned 125- thousand acres-- and it is just 30-percent contained. more than 65-hundred homes have been destroyed and 15-thousand remain threatened. (grant) kron 4's ashley zavala spent the day with a search and rescue crew.. she has the latest from paradise with the effort to find those who are missing... here in paradise, hundreds of people are spending the limited daylight they have going through wreckage like this...the sheriff of butte

county has requested more equipment and personnel to expedite the search.((pkg)) ((nats))picking up and sorting through crumbled pieces of what was once a home... search and rescue teams spent tuesday looking for human remains."i guess it's a feeling of urgency. that, we have all these people that want to know the status of their loved ones, and so they're depending on us to get the answers for them."about 200 people are involved in the search including law enforcement, members of calfire, and anthropologists from chico and parts of nevada..the teams search by zones... digging through dirt and ash on streets tangled in power lines. with dozens of people dead and only a few identified... the sheriff has requested military morgues and equipment that rapidly identifies dna.crews hoping to quickly bring closure to victims with so many questions.another question lingering for law enforcement... is just how many people are missing from the campfire."we don't know how many are truly missing. because when this fire broke out and spread as quickly as it did, people just fled, in whatever vehicle they could get into, and sometimes due to the traffic jam they abandoned

person's case....who will have more authority to get information from the red cross and other shelter providers in locating joanne caddy.he said after that the next steps would be for them to go to her property with some dogs to see if they can recover anything and that will tell us whether or not she actually got out of the house or if she was there bechtold knows his mom's house was destoryed. recently a reporter with the paradise post filmed her street in the nearby town of magalia..... he says it was hard to watch.just complete distraction, nothing standing no trees no houses untouched car is melted in the driveways. he comes up to her driveway and rolled passed it and he has the camera focused perfectly on it and it's just completely gone you see bits of the foundation sticking up out of the ground and that's it and you just wonder did she make it outjoanne caddy lives alone...and does not drive or have a car....but her son says his mom's neighborhood is tightknit.....so he's hoping someone helped get her out. he also says he believes his mom's character will help her come out of this in one piece. she can be ornery of times and i'm hoping that that's gonna come out and she's fighting her way through this and i'm hopeful she escapedin addtion to being handed out in the butte county area, this flyer has also been posted up on

(grant) breaking news just into kron 4. a shelter in place is being issued in sonoma because of a building fire. the 2-alarm fire was reported on eighth street east in sonoma....that's just east of the downtown square. close to east napa street. people with in a quarter mile radius need to shelter in place due to the large amount of smoke. right now there is no threat to other buildings or evacuations. we will have more information when it becomes available. (vicki) another big story we're following tonight... traffic is still recovering after eleven people were injured in a crash involving 21 vehicles this morning in santa cruz. kron 4's rob fladeboe joins us live from the scene with the latest details. rob? (rob live) i'm here at the intersection of highway one and river street, which was shut downfor much of the day after a big rig gravel truck lost it's brakes, plowed into a line of cars stopped at the light and then burst into flames. nats (cops work accident)one of the drivers caught up in this mess said it was like being being hit by a runaway train except the train was a truck. an out of control big rig that plowed through a line

kron4's will tran reports from santa rosa where schools were canceled today because of the smoke. sonoma county office of education officials said 36 school districts and 12 independent charter schools and other educational programs in the county are closed today because of poor air quality from smoke from the camp fire in butte county. santa rosa junior college is closed but sonoma state university in rohnert park is open. outdoor on-campus activities at sonoma state remain canceled today. county education officials said the liberty school district in petaluma is open today.petaluma is open today.

(grant) also in the north bay... a santa rosa man is behind bars after police say he went into a woman's apartment while she was in the shower and exposed himself. officers say say 22-year-old paul turpin entered the sonoma avenue apartment saturday night through an unlocked window. the woman pushed him and yelled at him-- and officers say he pushed her back and pinned her agaisnt a wall. she yelled again before he finally left. he was booked into the sonoma county jail. (vicki) a model rocket sparked a grass fire in concord on monday night, and police are trying to find the person that started it. the fire started just before

5:15 off barkwood court, which is near ygnacio valley road where a 3-alarm fire grass fire burned back in june. contra costa county fire officials posted on facebook saying that except for a quick and overwhelming response, this fire could have turned out very differently. (grant) a 14-year-old san francisco girl was at home when a robber broke into her house in the crocker-amazon neighborhood. police say the suspect kicked the door in at the home located in the 1200 block of athens street before going in to steal money and then leave. the girl was not injured. police describe the suspect as a man in his thirties. (grant) police are searching for a man they say struck a woman in a hit- and-run in san francisco's outer mission district on sunday morning. the 51- yearáold woman was crossing the street at mission street and geneva avenue at around 11:30 a-m when the suspect, described as a man between 25 and 30 years old, hit her with his car and drove away. the woman was later taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

wildfire raging through southern california .... is the woolsey fire - burning in both los angeles and ventura counties it has killed two people.. and injured three. an estimated 435- structures have been destroyed in that blaze so far, and it continues to threaten 57,000 more. it is burning more than 96-thousand acres.. so far, crews have managed to contain only 35 -percent of the woolsey fire. most hard working people live right here in the bay area. a new study reveals the average person living in walnut creek, works and commutes more than 40 hours a week. 46.9 to be exact. using u-s census data, insurance company 'haven life,' found people in walnut creek, work 40.8 hours perweek... while commuting 6.1 hours a week. this ranks them residents of the hardest working city in america. the data reveals, the average household income is 100- thousand dollars... although, compared to other hard working cities, walnut creek's unemployment rate is among the highest at 6.7 percent. two other bay area cities made the top 12 list. coming in at number 7... san ramon... with total working and commuting time being 46.2 hours per week. unemployment though is a low 2.9 percent. san francisco came in at number 10 with 46 working and commuting hours per week. and unemployment at 3.8 percent. this study... actually contradicts another "hardest working cities in america" study, this
