francisco unified school district announced it was shutting down all classes for friday... (take vo) the district is the 8th largest in the country... with 53,000 students in attendance. at marina middle school, this was the scene, children covering their faces with masks, scarves, sleeves... whatever they had. parents told me that they have been concerned all week, as they dropped off their children who were forced to be indoors only... with all outdoor activities canceled... and the smoke is also affecting the large number of private schools in san francisco as parents say shortly after the public schools made their announcement... it created a dominoe effect with everything else deciding to close the doors on friday.parents say they understand.

california on saturday to visit with the victims-- and see the destruction first hand. (vicki) it has been one week since the destructive blaze started in butte county. tonight-- crews are desperately trying to get in touch with hundreds of people who are missing. at the same time-- they are combing through the debris, looking for human remains. (grant) 56 people have been killed. right now we know nearly 300 people are unaccounted for. so far the fire has burned 140- thousand acres and it's 40-percent contained. more than 86-hundred homes have been destroyed and 15-thousand are threatened. kron 4's ashley zavala is in paradise as search and recovery efforts are ramping up. ((az)) (nats)one week into the camp fire and its flame ravaged-areas look like a mix between construction site and crime scene. "everyone is in task forces"the butte county sheriff's office says there are now 513 people deployed for the search... nearly double the amount from tuesday. "(michael st. john-search coordinator) this continues to grow everyday and we're going to keep going until we can exhaust all the options in locating people."about 30

different agencies from across the state are involved, including the national guard. "the area is very diverse, we have rural areas, homes that are spread, so it's a complex venture, it's exhausting and challenging work and you're in smoke all day long, it's going to slow going."alongside law enforcement, pg&e says it has about 900 employees in the area assessing damage and clearing down and draping electric lines. the power utility company, along with other services, are playing a role in the recovery efforts... ((nats))pg&e provided a generator to power this bowling alley serving as the search and rescue command center. verizon wireless installed a remote cell tower for better service. "everything is coordinated with calfire and pg&e and other services. we are all working as a team." (vicki) and the price of p-g-and-e stock continues to plummet in the aftermath of the camp fire. today it closed at 17 dollars and 74 cents a share. that is a drop of more than 31 dollars in the last six days. the utility is being sued by homeowners who claim a high voltage transmission line failed, sparking the fire. p-g-and-e told state regulators last week that it experienced a problem on a transmission line just before the flames erupted. no official cause of the fire is yet to be determined. (grant) developing news tonight. search crews in santa clara continue to look for a 49ers fan who vanished after the game on monday night. fire. right now at the shelter is up there are focusing on reuniting animals that have been affected by the fires, with their families were looking for them, so for the time being adoptions of the animals who don't have home's is kind of paused, so that's where we take the adoptable animals because think about it these communities of been devastated, nobody's gonna use that opportunity to adopt the new puppy which is already a stressful thing on its own. the dogs picked up from the fire zone wednesday will be evaluated medical and behavioral issues and will hopefully be available for adoption next week.in order to make room for those ??? dogs and any other dogs and cats that might come in from the fire area, or if he's waving their adoption fees through sunday for the animals like sassy hear who they already have ready for adoptionthose fees can run as high as $300 bucks.....so those who take in one of the animals here now could not only save money....but lives....that of the dog or cat given it's forever home....and by freeing more space in the arf shelter, animals from the fire zone. maureen kelly kron4 news. kron4 news.

depleting the store's inventory almost as fast as they get shipped in. so the limit is 3 per customer. wieder says these masks are in such high demand, that the vendor they buy from has no more in stock. he says that he doesn't look at this situation as a profit for his store - he sees it as a community service.

in fremont. the city council voted unanimously to approve a one-year pilot program allowing the company "lime" to place their scooters and e-bikes in their city early next year. the city would allow scooter companies to do business in fremont after the pilot period if the program is successful. the ordinance requires lime to include an age check feature in its app to prove riders are 18 or older, as well as educate on helmet laws and riding on the sidewalk. (grant) another big story tonight... a ventura county deputy killed last week in the thousand oaks mass shooting was laid to rest. a funeral service was held in westlake village today for sergeant ron helus. he was killed while trying to stop the shooting at borderline bar and grill. eleven others were also killed. hundreds of people came out to pay their respects to helus for his courageous service... he's cretided with alwihe got into a shootout with the gunman. he was a 29-year veteran of the sheriff's office... who was set to retire in less than a year. he leaves behind a wife and

son. (grant) the trial for mail bomb suspect cesar sayoc is set for july 15th, 2019. the 56-year-old was arraigned in federal court today. sayoc's attorney entered a not guilty plea for him. sayoc is accused of sending at least 16 mail bombs to several targets, including former president barack obama and former secretary of state hillary clinton. none of the devices detonated, and no one was injured. sayoc is facing several charges. his next court appearance will be february seventh. (vicki) the u-s food and drug administration is proposing new measures to regulate flavored nicotine products. this comes after a dramatic rise in vaping among high the f-d-a says e-cigarette use increased 78-percent among high schoolers and 48-percent among middle schoolers between 2017 to 2018. so the agency is proposing making policies against flavored e- cigarette products tougher.

these proposals could ultimately prompt their removal from shelves and websites that are accessible to minors. mint, menthol, and tobacco flavors are not included in the proposed changes. the fda says that is to help adults who want to the use the products as an avenue to quit smoking. the disneyland hotel in anaheim is facing a lawsuit tonight-- over bedbugs. a woman is claiming the bedbugs ruined her disney vacation. she stayed at the hotel back in april-- and says she was bitten multiple times all over her body, developing a rash. in the lawsuit she says she suffered emotional distress and is suing for punitive damages. the woman accuses the disneyland hotel of knowing it had a bedbug issue, and not doing anything to fix it. disneyland responded to the lawsuit saying they take extensive and preventative measures to make sure their guests are comfortable and safe during their stay. there is a new way some parents are attempting to place more control on their kids screen time. but the limits don't stop there nannies and day care providers are also being told to cut back. (grant) kron four's terisa estacio takes an in-depth look at "screen time contracts". agency: "we are seeing parents request don't allow children to be on screen time while with nanny or babysitter. babysitter: "i have friends who see that clause and questioned it." mom: "when i had a nanny, i wanted the updates." "au pair - i can see both sides." it is the latest trend to hit parenting how much is too much when it comes to kids, computers other electronic screens.. and the controversy it is rolling over into contracts between parents and their caregivers. lynn perkins, urban sitter. "i think overall, technology has lead to some improvements in society and with kids. but now it seems, there is a growing awareness that too

much has negative psychological behavioral impacts with kids and so parents are pulling back on how much screen time kids can have."lynn perkins is with urban sitter, an agency which connects parents with nannies and sitters through their social networks and contacts. perkins tells me she has seen a growing trend where parents are specifically asking their care givers to sign contracts which spell out strict limits covering screen time.perkins. i think they are looking at this as paying a care provider to spend time with their kids and i think bond with the care provider and you can not really do that when you are putting an ipad in front of the child.brittany. when i started in 2011, there was not much guidance, but now parents are asking to monitor social media and to pull back, especially at night before going to bed. brittany miller works as a care provider for urban sitter. brittany. i have not had that contract, but many of my friends question that, but i think it is good to have those rules out before you start your job. i can see both sides, i can see the value of screen time, some kids love snapchat, and that is a great way to connect and we send the pictures to their parents at work.i just make sure that i am abiding to the parents guidelines, it is their own and their rules.parent. "i

think this is more about the relationship you have with your nanny." a mom of two young children, cathleen says she can't imagine not using a screen time to help with kids during the day and thus believes placing a binding contract on nannies cracking down on their ability to use a screen seems like the wrong tactic.cathleen. i want to see those pictures of my kids when i am at work, so i want them to be using the phone. claudia wilson works full-time and has three children under 8. she and her husband host an au pair to help with caring for their kids while they work. claudia. i think it sets an tone in the home to have a contract that not enforceable and not realistic. in addition to restricting kids screen time, some contracts limit when a care provider can or can not be on their own phone. perkins says she has seen problems arise, but more often from those outside the families circle weigh in. perkins. we hear from other parents that may witness a nanny on the phone at the park, with a critical eye, but it could be taken out of context, a quick text to parents about something important.perkins, urban sitter. i am a big fan of being up front with child care provider, making expectations with an open dialog. whether this trend of nanny contracts covering screen time is here to stay or fades is uncertain

za-val-a... she is just outside that news conference... and was in paradise today... as search and rescue efforts are ramping up.... ashley? ((az)) (nats)one week into the camp fire and its flame ravaged-areas look like a mix between construction site and crime scene. "everyone is in task forces"the butte county sheriff's office says there are now 513 people deployed for the search... nearly double the amount from tuesday. "(michael st. john-search coordinator) this continues to grow everyday and we're going to keep going until we can exhaust all the options in locating people."about 30 different agencies from across the state are involved,

including the national guard. "the area is very diverse, we have rural areas, homes that are spread, so it's a complex venture, it's exhausting and challenging work and you're in smoke all day long, it's going to slow going."alongside law enforcement, pg&e says it has about 900 employees in the area assessing damage and clearing down and draping electric lines. the power utility company, along with other services, are playing a role in the recovery efforts... ((nats))pg&e provided a generator to power this bowling alley serving as the search and rescue command center. verizon wireless installed a remote cell tower for better service. "everything is coordinated with calfire and pg&e and other services. we are all working as a team."

(ken) oakland police asking for help to find the shooter who left a father dead. the evidence police are releasing to try to track down the gunman. they might not look like much ... but they fooled the prison guards at alcatraz. what authorities are hoping they can learn from the face masks... used for the infamous "escape from the rock".

the infamous 1962 escape from alcatraz prison continues to remain a mystery today.more than a million people visit the island every year fascinated with this story and the rich history of the prison. (pam) and today - a number of agencies gathered to unveil the preservation of some key evidence in the prison escape case. kron 4's sara stinson has details from the island.

morris and the anglin brothers took off alcatraz from the north side of the island and have never been seen since. today the fbi and the u-s marshall are working together to recreate evidence that way the six thousand people who visit the island today can have a much more real experience.">frank morris and the two brothers john and clarence anglin were all serving time on alcatraz for bank robberies and previous escape attempts.the three spent six months preparing for their escape from alcatraz on june 11th 19-62.prison guards would conduct 12 head counts a day and officials believe it was handmade fake heads placed in their prison cell cots that helped their disapperance go unnoticed for sometime.the men carved a

hole in their cells with hand crafted tools to the plumbing in the walls, which led them to the rooftop where they climbed down the smoke stack and into a raft they made out of rain coats.here are pictures of everything used in the escape. the original decoy heads were once on display inside the prison for tourists to look, but due to the climate on the island they started to deteriorate.so about a year ago - the fbi's laboratory in quantico used a 3-d printer to make replica's of the decoy heads.over the years the u-s marshalls office has followed many leads on this case some even bringing them overseas - however - there is still no proof indiciating whether or not the three fugitives survived their escape from alcatraz.

(ken)a new brush fire broke out this morning in santa paula.... northwest of the woolsey fire in ventura county. firefighters used helicopters to drop water on the briggs fire -- stopping forward progress at 50 to 75 acres.the fire was 90 percent contained by around 3:30 this afternoon... but firefighters worked until nightfall to completely extinguish hotspots and reach full containment.no homes were damaged and no injuries were reported. as for the progress on other fires burning in southern california... the largest ... the woolsey fire... burning in los angeles and ventura countes. that fire is up to 57- percent containment.... at close to 100- thousand acres burned. the 'hill fire' in ventura county has scorched 45-hundred acres.. and is 97- percent contained. and the

(grant)you remember this story... it was said that homeless man... johnny bobbitt... gave his last 20-dollars to kate mcclure when she ran kate mcclure when she ran out of gas late at night one year ago. mcclure and her boyfriend... mike d'amico... raised over 400 thousand

dollars on gofundme... supposedly for the homeless man ... from more than 14- thousand donors to... "pay it forward." prosecutors prosecutors now say the whole story was a lie.they say d'amico and mcclure had discussions about their inability to pay bills and mounting debts.and bobbitt agreed to be part of the deception.scott coffina: "d'amico, mcclure and bobbitt conspired to pass off a fake, feel good story that would compel donors to contribute to their cause. and it worked in a very big way. but it was fictitious and illegal and there are consequences." (grant) the three have been charged with second degree theft by deception. the scam initially came to light because bobbitt filed a lawsuit against the couple ... after only receiving 75 thousand of the more than 367-thousand the trio got from "gofundme" after fees...
