as smoke continues to fill our skies. air quality improved slightly for the first time today-- but it is still considered unhealthy-- and people are urged to stay inside. good evening i'm vicki liviakis. (catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for grant lodes tonight. we are expected to get some relief from the smoke soon--as rain is on the way. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us with details on how the wet wether will help. lawrence? lawrence karnow: hazy skies continue with partly cloudy skies today. the air quality has improved but is still unhealthy in some areas. a storm off the coast will move toward california in the next 24 hours. the winds will begin to pick up out of the south by tomorrow afternoon. this will help to improve air quality. clouds and rain are then expected to move in late tuesday night and wednesday morning. showers will decrease by the evening. thanksgiving will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a lingering shower early and then another storm moving in thursday night and friday to bring us another round of rain. highs will be in the 50s and 60s .

(catherine) several school campuses were closed today because ofthe bad air quality. we have a full list - on kron-4 dot com. and while most school districts around the bay area are on thanksgiving break... some college campuses were supposed to remain in session today. and we've just learned that san francisco state university will not reopen until next monday. again -- you can find a complete list of those closures on kron-4 dot com. (vicki) now to the latest on the wildfire in butte county. tonight crews are desperately trying to recover human remains before rain hits the area. right now, the death toll stands at 77 and nearly one-thousand people are unaccounted for. so far the fire has burned 151- thousand acres and it's 66-percent contained. more than 11 thousand homes

for, primarily in caring for our personnel that's going to be out working in the inclement weather, we're preparing the protective equipment for those rescuers so they aren't going to be put in a worse situationas the rain approaches, officials say they're keeping an eye on the weather... but rain or shine, they say the search wont stop. with another long week of work ahead... search crews say this northern california community's spirit is pushing them forward.."the hospitality in this community has been amazing. even in the face of such tragedy, to see how much they're trying to thank us.. we're just doing our jobs. it's been refreshing." (vicki) as of the last update... more than 900 people are missing in butte county. authorities are hopeful that some of those people may be in shelters - and are just not in contact with friends or family members. so they are asking people to take a look at the list... and tell them if someone on the list is accounted for.. we have a link to that list on kron-4 dot com. (catherine) breaking news tonight --four people have been shot at mercy hospital on chicago's south side.. the gunman -- a 32-year-old man -- and a female victim were killed.female victim were killed.police say the shots were fired both inside - and outside - the hospital. a

police officer was also shot and is hospitalized in critical condition.according to reports - one of the women shot in the parking lot was a doctor at the hospital arriving for work -- and was shot by her former fiance. the hospital says the shooting incident is over, police have secured the hospital and all patients are safe. (vicki) the santa clara county coroner's office is working to identify a body that was found near san jose. police say they were notified saturday afternoon of a possible body in the water near the alviso marina. that's not far from levi's stadium-- but it's not known if the body is connected to a missing 49er fan. 32-year-old ian powers left his seat at the game last monday and never returned. powers' car was found in the stadium parking lot that night. the coroner's office is expected to release the identity of the body soon. (catherine) another big story tonight.. we're learning more about an east bay teenager who died in a house fire. her family and community are mourning her

death while rallying to support each another. kron four's terisa estacio is live in orinda with the latest. terisa? terisa estacio - the 16 year old went here to miramonte... kron four news has learned another teen and student here was also injured in the blaze. tonight, this community is rallying around the girls family as they deal with this horrible siutation. (estacio reporting) a growing memorial in front of this orinda home on moraga way... after a ferocious fire erupted this past weekend... that killed luca gero, and injured her friend and an adult male. julie park, principle miramonte high school. we found out and are very sad. julie park is the principle at miramonte high school. park. we offered counseling to teens, we are closed, but wanted to help out. park says luca on the track team and latin club... at school monday, teens say they are in shock about her death.

(estacio live) her friends tell me that she was at home with a friend, and an exchange student was acting as a chaperone while her parents were away for the weekend. the fire department is investigating the cause... they have said the fire was so hot, intially crews couldnt go inside. one fire fighter was injured, but he has since been released. luca friend and the male adult were taken to the burn center in san francisco. no info on condition. te

concerning the aftermath of the camp fire. we've been telling you about the on-going effort to rescue pets and other animals displaced by the fire.(vicki) among the people helping...two south bay animal control officers who have just returned from the fire zone.. they shared some of their stories and pictures with kron four's rob fladeboe. santa clara county animal control officers jessica ibanez and and jeremy selbach just returned from butte county where they helped care for animals displaced by the camp fire. they knew just what to do jessica

ibanez/animal control officer "....i offered hugs and everybody really appreciated that...."jeremy selbach/animal control officer "....everybody is up there trying to help. i saw a lot of hard working people. my part was taking in animals from an evacuation team or from an owner and tying to care for them..."selback and ibanez spent six days in a makeshift shelter at the airport in chico where some 800 displaced pets and other animals are being housed. some were hurt in the fire, others are still in shock and all are tired and hungry and in need of some love. jeremy selbach "....seeing the reaction from the dog and it's owner after being separated for several days brought tears..."jessica ibanez "...seeing people come in looking for their animals and helping to reunite them was really rewarding..."the two officers drew from their long experience here at the county shelter in san martin. in chico, they rolled up their sleeves to walk, feed and comfort these"other" fire victims and in some cases, were able to find their owners.

(vicki) air quality continues to suffer across the entire bay area. kron 4's sara stinson shows us just how bad it is in the east bay. "i'm here on deer hill road in lafayette which is usually a spot where you can get a great view of mount diablo, but as you can see the mountain is no where to be found with the smoke and haze. i spoke with several people in the area who say they have not been faring well with the terrible air quality conditions.""its hard

there'e not many details available yet on an officer involved shooting in hayward. it happened last thursday on the 24-thousand block of oneil avenue. a man was shot by officers -- and he died from his injuries friday night. police say he had been armed with an edged weapon -- but did not describe any confrontation. hayward detectives are working with the alameda county d-a's office in the investigation. peninsula... police in belmont are looking for the driver of a gray s-u-v who may have been a witness in a woman's death. you can see the newer model rav-4 driving by in surveillance video. 61-year-old maria castro was found severely injured last week on cipriani boulevard. she was taken to the hospital where she later died. police believe the driver of that s-u-v was in the area around the time castro was found. they are asking anyone with information to please come forward. (catherine) in the south bay... today marked the first day of sacred heart community services' distribution of thanksgiving food boxes. but they still need turkeys...and more than 4-thousand families are expecting to get them. kron 4's yoli aceves has the story from san jose. november 19, is the first day of sacred heart community service's (shcs) thanksgiving food box distribution. the agency plans for 4,200

families to come through its doors to pick up thanksgiving food boxes that contain 50 pounds of food and a turkey. the agency currently has 2,318 turkeys-a little under 2,000 shy of its goal for 4,200 turkeys to distributethis week. shcs will also distribute another 3,200 food boxes in december.the food box offsets the cost of groceries for families in santa clara county, saving them $100 thisthanksgiving. living in one of the most expensive areas in the country means a bulk of our memberspaychecks go straight to housing expenses. the average cost for a 2 bedroom apartment in san jose is $2,753 and 26% of its residents make less than $50,000 a year.people interested in giving back to their community this holiday season can visit shcs' website atwww.sacredhea rtcs.org/holidays to donate online, volunteer, or see our wish list of items to donate. people candrop off a turkey monday through wednesday this week from 8am - 5pm. the agency's donation station is located at 1st and alma street in san jose

the busy thanksgiving travel season is underway. and industry experts say it's going to be the busiest it's been in more than a dozen years. triple-a says 54-million americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this thanksgiving. that's a nearly five percent jump from last year, and the highest number since 2005. and if you're one of the more than 48 million americans traveling by car -- you could be in for a particularly long journey. travel times in the nation's most congested cities could be up to four times longer than normal. (catherine) take a look at this... a bear cub has been reunited with its mother -- thanks to a police officer in truckee. sergeant john mon pere responded to a report of a mother bear trying to free her cub from a dumpster.

the officer climbed on another container-- and lifted the lid to let the cub out. it scampered off and ran to its mother-- who was watching from a nearby hillside. police say sergeant pere has had two bear rescues in recent weeks... they're now calling him the "bear whisperer" (vicki) still ahead... an incredible story of survival-- after a mother and her newborn baby flee a burning hospital in paradise. details on how she was able to escape.. tonight-- we're hearing an amazing story of survival from the deadliest wildfire in state history. (catherine) a woman fled a burning hospital with her newborn baby.. it happened as medical workers were fighting to keep her, and each other safe from the flames. joe

khalil has the story. six day old halle is the last baby born at feather river hospital.just moments after she arrived, the camp fire began to surround the building. heather roebuck/mother"they came over the speaker, evacuate the hospital. all patients need to be moved." tamara ferguson/nurse"i went to my patients' rooms and i said just grab your baby, we gotta go. just grab your baby there's no time."in the scramble to evacuate, halle's mom heather had been separated from her child.put into an ambulance and driven away.her ambulance made it about half a mile before it began to literally melt in the flames. her c section surgery left the lower half of her body numb. she couldn't move.and made what she thought would be her last phone call.heather roebuck/mother"i said goodbye to my husband and just told him to tell our kids i love them and that i was sorry. i'm sorry i wouldn't be there. it was very very hard."tamara ferguson/nurse"i heard the ambulance in front of us in on fire."nurse tamara ferguson was in an ambulance behind heather's.making the same last phone call to her family. tamara ferguson/nurse"they

kept telling me you're going to be fine. and i kept trying to convince them no you don't understand. i'm not gonna be fine. there's no way i'm going to survive this. there's fire blowing at me."as the fire was consuming homes all around them, a stranger helped heather get out of her ambulance and wheeled her up this driveway on chloe court. nurse tamara followed. eventually they ran into david hawks, paradise's fire chief. chief david hawks/paradise fire dept."there's a dog door here. one of the paramedics made access to. we unlocked the garage, moved patients into this home and sheltered them in place. i said hey if you follow directions which is to clear pine needles, that we would be safe here."what happened next was nothing short of amazing.emts and nurses became stand-in firefighters.some getting on the roof of this home clearing gutters of brush.hosing down the outer edge of the property. saving this home, all while their patients were kept safe inside.tamara ferguson/nurse "he said you do this, you do this you do this. all of us shifted our minds to what do we need to do for survival mode here."chief david hawks/paradise fire dept."they followed directions, they did exactly what i asked them to do."amid a neighborhood

devastated by the camp fire, this chloe court home survived. so did all the patients and medical staff inside.desiree borden/evacuee"i am so happy that my home was spared so their lives could be spared. that was that home's purpose, was to save those people." desiree borden owns this home with her husband.not long before it was used to save lives of people she'd never met, she was fleeing her home with her 17 month old daughter in the car.desiree borden/evacuee"i was singing nursery rhymes to her trying to keep her calm. although she was very calm, i don't know if i was singing the nursery rhymes for her or for me. i just knew that our story couldn't end that way. we couldn't burn alive in a car." it wasn't until one of the nurses sent desiree a facebook message that she learned her home was still standing.she'd assumed like her neighbors' homes it was gone.now, these people, all strangers a few days ago, forever bonded through one common story of survival.tamara ferguson/nurse "we're all here. we're all able to talk about this and it's absolutely extraordinary." desiree borden/evacuee"it's humbling to know that your life was spared when so many aren't, and so many are unaccounted for."

new stories of heroism that took place in the camp fire. reporter paul vercammen tells us about a bus driver ... who drove school children to safety. so many stories of absolutely stomach churning despair. but here's one of great heroism. there was a bus driver just about two or three months into his job. he goes to ponderosa elementary school -- that's in paradise.the flames are burning ever so close to the school.it would eventually be damaged but he gets 22 schoolchildren, two teachers on that bus and they begin a harrowing drive to safety.mary ludwig:"it was um, very scary. it was like, um, felt like armageddon. i don't know another word to say."charlotte merz:"i was like seeing like smoke everywhere, i couldn't see hardly anything. i saw houses burning and animals in cars whining, and i love animals, it was so crazy and there were like fires left and right, everywhere you looked, there was like smoke everywhere and people trying to get out, and it was like really hard."so the odyssey through the inferno continued. some of the young lungs of
