( james ) the wet and windy conditions came back last night, as rain fell across the bay area. meaning people had to brave the slick roads to get home from their thanksgiving celebrations, they'll have to do the same this morning, when they head out to catch those black friday deals. kron4's alecia reid has more from hayward. the rain started coming down pretty steadily within the last couple hours.drivers we spoke to are staying alert.pkg oh no i dont wanna be in an accidentthe rain is back for the second day in a row.we do try to be cautiousalthough some didn't expect it thanksgiving night.we didn't know it's gonna rainbeing extra cautious is a must. because you dont know who's drinking, not drinking, although they're not supposed to. who's texting.chp is warning drivers to be careful on the wet roadways. i drive slowly when it's rainingi have encountered some unsafe drivers.some behind the wheel say they have to drive defensively because of others. i feel like people are a lot more cautious when it starts to rain here. because i do

notice if i'm on the freeway and it starts to sprinkle, everyone starts to really slow down and then that's even more dangerousthere are 150- thousand people living in hayward. the city wants to make sure people aren't only safe while getting around, but also when staying dry at home. sand bags are being provided for homes in low lying areas. free sandbags? out on a mission momentscores of people flocked over to livermore's premium outlets to get a head start on black friday sales on thanksgiving what did you guys buy? we bought from van hidden, calvin klein, corningware and other storesprobably half an hour, we started at three o clock// some waited in line for hours.. some of the lines pouring outside the stores..like here at tommy hilfigersotwe come out every year, we would like to get some deals for our family and friends. we like getting good deals and have a good time. this shopper came to get a bargain on designer brands like tory burch sot bags, wallets and shoulder bags.was it worth the long line?yes very much!i don't know if it's worth the wait but it's just fun.shoppers even hit the stores before their holiday feast we haven't cooked yet...we will go back home and cook our turkey. ( james ) an investigation is underway after a house fire kills a man in alameda county.

it is a tragic loss for a family on thanksgiving.. kron4's dan thorn has the latest. a fire tears through a home on thanksgiving day...killing a man and scarring a family.. sot: i just feel horrible for them i don't think anyone should have to go through that. neighbors who did not want to be on camera describe the scene..sot: when i walked into the backyard i automatically smelled smoke or a fire, i knew that there was a fire. crews rushed to the house along the 1400 block of via corella...firefighterers say they put out the flames within 20 minutes but could not get to the man inside... sot: we found that individual in a rear bedroom of the house pulled that individual out confirmed that that person did pass away. the unidentified man has been described as being in his late twenties. 13 others including 8 children living in the house were not injured. but they're now without a place to call home. ( james ) the red cross is

helping the family who have been displaced. firefighters say the cause is still under investigation. ( james )to butte county now... where rain is helping in the firefight.but it is also creating an even bigger challenge.. for the teams searching for victim remains in the rubble left behind by the wildfire.here is where we stand right now. 84 people have been killed in the state's deadlist wildfire. hundreds are still considered missing. more than 13-thousand homes have been destroyed. the fire has burned 153-thousand acres. and is 95 percent contained. however full containment is not expected until next friday. ( james )thousands of people lost their homes in northern california's camp fire.but for one couple, the wildfire marked the third time in as many years they have lost their house to a fire.jerry olenyn reports.

jerry wilson:"we're going to have to stop meeting like this."i had hoped i would never see jerry and patty wilson again.three years ago, an electrical fire destroyed their paradise house.nine months later, the rental house they were living in while their house was being reconstructed was one of just three that went up in flames during the saddle fire.they lost virtually all of their belongings.patty wilson:"a box that you would hold reams of paper full of pictures." finally, a year ago, the wilsons' house, the one that patty grew up in as a child, was completed.the house of their dreams was back and better than ever.but patty said something ominous at the time.nat sound:patty wilson:"i was just thinking that every day praying that it's not going to happen again."nat sound:"and again it happened a third time. yes."the wilsons' house, the one lost three years ago to an electrical fire before being rebuilt,was one of the more than 13- thousand houses that were destroyed by the camp fire. reporter:"do you have any explanation as to why this happened to you three times in

three years."jerry wilson:"i think things just happen." patty wilson:"i don't think there's any explanation for it."somehow the couple remains positive.reporter:"you guys are kind of known as the people who get in house fires." patty wilson:"nobody wants us at their house."after all, they say, they and all of their relatives got out alive. not everyone can say that. jerry wilson:"i feel so bad for the people that are worse off than us."patty wilson: "yes."bad news comes in threes. merely a cliche for sure.but don't tell that to patty and jerry wilson. ( james ) thousands of camp fire victims spent thanksgiving away from their homes... ashley zavala explains how surrounding communities tried to provide them with comfort on the holiday.. victims for thanksgiving dinner. members of this community say they've never had a holiday like this before. ((nats)) boiling hunreds of pounds of potatoes in an old beer kettle...it wasn't a typical turkey day for sierra nevada founder ken grossman... (ken grossman - sierra nevada brewing co.)) "we're glad to be able to help out..thanksgiving is a time when family gets together, i know so many people are displaced we hope to give a little bit of comfort for those folks.:the kettle is another symbol of life disrupted from the camp fire... grossman planned to use it to make beer to celebrate the brewery's anniversary..."when the fires happened and we canceled the event, we figured out we could use it for this."he along with an army of volunteers prepared and served thanksgiving meals for hundreds of fire victims at the brewery. involving 1500 pounds of potatoes... 75 gallons of gravy... a couple thousand pounds of pork.. more than 100 turkeys... and of course, dessert.((nats)) firefighters also helped out

at the brewery...((mark beveridge - calfire)) "what a great opportunity..to see the people that we're serving not in the light of the tragedy that's basically at our footsteps...so right now, this is my family."in the dining room..displaced family, friends, and neighbors gathered and reflected on the fire"it's been absolutely horrendous, but god's going to get us through this. there is a future in paradise, californiawith all of the help from so many organizations.. .they say this experience has given a whole new definition to the word thankful"it just makes you feel like america is great. just that we're here, and we're together."((az)) fire victims say this event is just one of many acts of kindness they've received since the camp fire first started. tag. tradition going back decades. san francisco's 'glide memorial church' hosted its annual thanksgiving feast .... and volunteers came out in droves.. giving up their own holiday time.. to put the meals together. kron4's sara stinson talked to volunteers about why they come out every year . san francisco's glide memorial church hosted its annual thanksgiving feast and volunteers came out in full force to put the meals together. thanksgiving is a very special holiday, and glide goes above and beyond in spreading holiday cheer to everyone.the organization has been serving the homeless community and those in need for 50 years. officers with the san francisco police department also pitched and in chief bill scott spoke with kron4 about glide's impact. scott said the work the church does for the community year- round is gratifying.

skies for the turkey trot .. they were helping raise money for a great cause.. "...gobble, gobble, gobble...."nats (race begins) the 14th annual applied materials/silicon valley turkey trot hit the streets here in downtown san jose despite worries about rain and unhealthy air. no one happier about that than the event founder carl guardino.carl guardino/silicon valley leadership guardino/silicon valley leadership group "....14 days of smoke alerts from the fires that have been plaguing our state but today some 21,000 folks will help us hit our ambitious goal of raising $1 million dollars for needy families in the bay area..."pounding the pavement from santa clara street to the finish line at sap pavilion, the 5 k walk and 10 k run, which includes many serious competitors, is mostly about amateur athletes working up an appetite in the name of helping the less fortunate.rib fladeboe/san jose "....the proceeds from the turkey trot go to the health trust, the healthy kids foundation, second harvest food banks serving three counties and the silicon valley housing

( james ) a colorado man and his young daughter spent thanksgiving driving to california ... they are coming to help victims of the 'camp fire'. james faircloth is driving from denver to chico... he is in the driver's seat of an r-v filled with items to donate to those in need, including the actual r-v. the father of four says, after seeing what was going on in northern california, he knew he had to do something.

officer or emt that lost their home and has a family and just needs a place to stay temporarily while they try to rebuild and figure out which way is up.">( james ) faircloth set up a go-fund-me campaign last week... for donations to help pay for the r-v. and a california woman is donating a second r-v to a family in need.faircloth says, he and his young daughter expect to arrive early this morning. ( james ) one person is dead and two others injured after a shoooting at an alabama mall this thanksgiving. authorities in hoover alabama --- a suburb of birmingham --- say two people got into a fight at the mall. things then escalted and shots were fired. an 18-year-old was taken to a local hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. the man who shot the teen attempted to run away... and was shot and killed by police.

and going crazy, just getting away from it and then cops ran by us with their guns drawn in that direction, so....." reporter question"what were police doing? what were they telling you guys?""nobody was telling us anything, i mean it was so fast. i was so close to it, i'm not hanging around waiting for someone to tell me what to do.">( james ) a 12-year-old girl was also shot and taken to the hospital. no word on who shot her.the scene at the mall is now secure. ( james ) and in indiana... police were called to the scene of a shooting thanksgiving night.police in fort wayne say there were five victims in total... three of which were declared dead at the scene.there is no word on a possible motive for the shooting.no information has been released about the suspect at this point either. the identities of victims will not be released until their families have been notified.

located four victims inside a residence suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. in addition we located another victim outside of the residence who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. three of those victims were pronounced deceased at the scene, two of them transported to a local hospital in critical condition.">( james ) police are still invesitigating and are asking the public there in fort wayne to come forward with information to help them determine a motive for the deadly (james) coming up next on the kron 4 morning news ... the holiday shopping season has just gotten started but experts are already expecting strong sales... we'll take a look at why, after the breka. the rain, but up until this week it had been a mostly dry year. but there's hope that a developing "el nino" might continue to bring us more rain. but just because it's an el nino, doesn't ánecessarily mean we will see lots of rain. kron4's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow explains. (track 1: 1st take) (video of hot, dry weather and natsounds of wildfires) it was a summer of scorching temperatures and some of the largest fires in california history. for 7 of the last 10 years, california has suffered through a severe drought. in fact, from 2011 to 2014, we've had the driest period since records began in the 1800s. (track 2: 1st take) (videos of dry brush and fires) it's no surprise that parched land covered with dead trees and brush have provided plenty of fuel for wildfires to sweep across the state. (natsound of fires)(track 3:

2nd take) (el nino globe graphic) and with an el nino forecast to develop this fall and winter, hopes are high for a lot of rain.(natsound of rain)(track 4: 1st take) (el nino animation graphic) el nino is a warming of the equatorial waters in the central and eastern pacific. it can change weather patterns all across the globe.(track 5: 1st take) (natsound of flooding) when we think of an el nino, flooding rain and mudslides often come to mind.(video of floods & mudslides)(track 6: 1st take) but not every el nino is the same, and they don't always bring a lot of rain.(bite - 7:10)(brian garcia, warning coordination meteorologist nws) (not all el nino's are created equal. 2015 - 2016 was a strong el nino but is was classified as a dud because we were hoping it would be a drought buster for us)(7:20) (track 7: 1st take) (imgó0298.jpg)(please burn a courtesy for noaa into the graphic)the waters at the equator have started to warm, and this year's forecast is for a weak or moderate el nino. so what does that mean for the bay area and the state? (bite - 6:15)(brian garcia)(in weak el nino years we typically see much more normal rainfall for the overall water year but we can get periods of heavy rain in any year. i don't think we've seen a strong rain year come out of a weak el nino) (6:32)(cover some of this bite with video) (track 8: 2nd take) (video of rain, then seasonal outlook graphic) computer models are now forecasting a 70 to 75% chance of el nino conditions this winter.(video of rain) (track 9: 1st take) (video of dry brown hills and reservoirs) but how much rain we see here and across the state is still unknown. past 'weak to moderate' el nino events give us a little clue. the average of the last 25 weak el ninos brings slightly below normal rain for the state. (track 11: 1st take)(video of heavy rain) while the average of the last 25 moderate el ninos bring a little above normal rainfall.(natsound of heavy rain)(bite - 17:55)(heather phillips, vine hill ranch) i think we all like to see the wet weather within reason but yes i think we're ready to get a few wet ones now)(18:07) supply in the bay area isn't keeping up with demand. for several years now -- it's been a sellers market. but as the economy has stabilized and in many cases, excelled... people are still looking into buying homes.

kron four's philippe djegal spoke with housing industry experts with a look at mortgages... and, whether or not buying a affordable. contrary to popular belief...jason moon/real estate agents- "millenials are definitely buying homes." the american dream of owning a home is not dead...chris hudson/mortgage consultant- "it's alive, but we're having to get a little more creative in keeping it alive." the path to ownership just involves a few more hoops than it did just a decade ago... when borrowers who couldn't afford their loans were easily getting pre-approved before their homes lost tremendous value and were forced into foreclosure...kristine marr/senior loan officer- "consumers are afraid, um, a bit of the mortgage process -- it's shrouded in mystery and it shouldn't be." in san francisco, where zillow says the median listing price for a home is more than 1.25 million dollars... there -- you might be priced out no matter what you make... but in the east bay -- let's say in concord...jason moon/real estate agent- "it's a spacious, two-bedroom two-bath house." real estate agent jason moon says depending on your level of income, your credit history and amount of cash available to cover the downpayment and closing costs... this 640-thousand

dollar home could be yours. jason moon/real estate agent- "you want to know if they're buying a home with cash or with a loan. and, most of the time it is with a loan, um, regardless of what some people may say out there." moon partners with senior loan officers like kristine (chris- teen) marr with summit funding in walnut creek... to determine if the consumer qualifies for a mortgage.. and, if so, which type. marr says most people are still signing traditional 30- year-fixed rate mortgages... but that adjustable rate mortgages may fall more in line with the borrower's needs, especially here in the bay area... if the home buyer intends to move out within three to seven years. kristine marr/senior loan officer- "say two young professionals, straight out of school. i can qualify them straight out of school to buy a home, and i'll show them the options. i'll show them this is a 30-year fixed mortgage, but since you're buying a small home or a condo, you might want to look at a side by side comparison with a seven-one arm. it will be fixed for seven years. so, if you sell anytime before seven years, it will never adjust on you because you'll sell the home, the mortgage is gone -- paid off. and, you move to your next home." marr says the myth of needing 20-percent cash down to secure a mortgage and a home is just that -- a myth.kristine marr/senior loan officer- "you can go with three-percent down, or three- and-a-half percent down, or anything above that." you could also possibly qualify for downpayment assistance in

( darya ) in the east bay... oakland police have released the name of the person they arrested in connection to a construction fire. police say they've connected dustin bellinger to the october 23rd fire on the 32-hundred block of peralta street. the 45-year old part-time construction worker faces one felony count of maliciously damaging or destroying a building by means of fire or an explosive. this is video from a separate fire on the same morning... where a 126- unit building

under construction was also destroyed. bellinger has not been named as a suspect in that fire. he is being held without bail in the santa rita jail. ( darya ) crews in alameda county are investigating a house fire that killed one person. it happened in the 14-hundred block of via corella in san lorenzo. crews say they were able to put out the fire in 20 minutes but could not get to the man inside the home. 13 others including 8-children living in the house were not injured... but the house is a total loss. the red cross is now helping the family. ( james ) to butte county now where the rain is helping in the fire fight.. but it's creating a challenge for the team searching for the missing. containment has gone up to 95-percent this morning. but officials have raised the death toll to 84. hundreds of people are still considered missing. more than 13-thousands homes have been destroyed. the camp fire has burned more than 153-

thousand acres.. but it has not grown any bigger. ( james ) thousands of camp fire victims spent thanksgiving away from their homes. ashley zavala explains how surrounding communities tried to provide them with comfort on the holiday. "we're glad to be able to help out..thanksgiving is a time when family gets together, i know so many people are displaced we hope to give a little bit of comfort for those folks.:the kettle is another symbol of life disrupted from the camp fire... grossman planned to use it to make beer to celebrate the brewery's anniversary..."when the fires

( darya ) faircloth set up a go- fund-me campaign last week... for donations to help pay for the r-v. a california woman is donating a second r-v to a family in need.

anticipated that with climate change and with these fires what used to be called a 100 year storm can now be called a 10 year storm and the statistics will need to be changed."the napa is no stranger to high water. phil miller/ napa county flood control: "there were over 22 recorded floods in the history of napa."just over 10 years ago the city completed this, a massive series of walls, gates and channels to help direct flood waters through and out of the downtown core. "at first glance it may just look like any other city park, but when the napa river rises high enough this actually becomes the bottom of the channel and these gates right here will close, helping to protect the city from the rising waters." amelia humphreys/ napa resident: "we saw pretty much this river here go all the way under the bridge there and cover the garbage cans that are over there, all those cars that are over there would be under water as well." napa county flood control: "we just had crowds of people out here, kids on the shoulders of their dads watching the water go by, and we were downhere in our yellow storm gear and people were yelling out to 111us, this is what the government is supposed to be doing! this works great!"but since completion these gates have only been drawn a single time... and it wasn't during an el nino winter .. but the following year... which despite being very rainy was actually a la nina when the ocean waters near us are actually cooler. phil miller/ napa county flood control: "on

a very strong el nino year we do tend to get additional precipitation in northern california which happened in the winter of 2016, whereas in the winter of 2017, where we had a record year, that was actually a la nina year where it's pretty much a crap-shoot as to what your going to get." what's the lesson here? el nino conditions often do coincide with flooding conditions. but in a changing climate, scenes like those from the historic 1997 el nino may become more common, el nino or not.heather phillips/ local grape grower: "i think that we've seen hits or misses with el nino, it hasn't been really that consistent so i think we're wondering what it could bring this year, there's nothing on the horizon." for this deeply agricultural valley, grape growers such as heather phillips say they are thankful for the rain an el nino can bring...but climate change could alter the characteristics of an el nino potentially ( darya )( james )( john ) ( darya ) coming up at 6 o'clock. toss out those turkey leftovers ... dungeness crab season now takes the spotlight in the bay area. we'll

hitting lake tahoe where nearly a foot of snow fell overnight. that first storm forced heavenly mountain in south lake tahoe to close because of increasing winds and limited visibility. but they plan to open today. about 11 inches of snow was reported at kirkwood mountain. and seven inches at northstar. a winter weather adviry remains in effect for lake tahoe above 7-thousand feet through 10- a-m this morning. difficult for many of us to understand...chris hudson/mortgage consultant- "i think anything can be risky if not well-understood." the federal government's consumer financial protection bureau recommends considerable consultation with a financial expert before jumping into a reverse mortgagechris hudson/mortgage consultant- "i try to facilitate an experience opposite of a surprise birthday party." walnut creek mortgage consultant chris hudson, with c-2 financial says this type of loan is only available to the older population.chris hudson/mortgage consultant- "a reverse mortgage is just that -- it's when we're now monetizing equity in our home, either in a lump sum or on a, on a monthly basis, if you will. you can kind of think of it like an annuity." this form of a loan is tailored for people 62-years-old and older -- looking to buy a home or already have a home and need another stream of income.chris hudson/mortgage consultant- "it's just like what it says, instead of me paying the bank, the bank is paying me, um, out on an ongoing basis." the interest rate on a reverse mortgage fluxuates based on the market and can sometimes be much higher than a traditional mortgage.

interest that also compounds over the term of the loan, eventually leading some borrowers to see the loan exceed the actual value of the home.chris hudson/mortgage consultant- "they've come to a point in their lives where they're not retired, but they don't necessarily have enough income coming in to kind of help all their basic monthly expenses on a monthly basis." the federal trade commission says borrowers can not escape paying homeowner's insurance or property taxes with a reverse mortgage... though the money the borrower receives is typically tax-free. this continues until the borrower sells the home, ( james ) in national news... officials have reopened an alamaba mall for black friday shopping. ... after a shooting that injured two people.the gunman is dead. police in hoover alabama... a suburb of birmingham... say two people got into a fight at the mall last night. things then escalted and shots were fired. an 18-year-old was taken to the hospital... reportedly in serious condition. the man who shot the teen

attempted to run away.. but was shot and killed by police. because the shooting happened during black friday shopping... hundreds of people were at the mall. ( james ) a 12-year- old girl was also shot and taken to the hosptial... at last check she was in surgery.. and they don't believe her injuries are life- threatening. ( james ) thousands of people in san jose earned a big pat on the back as they were in the thick of the

competition... in the annual 'thanksgiving turkey trot' marathon.( darya ) and as kron four's rob fladeboe reports... not only did they have clear skies for the turkey trot... they were helping raise money for a great cause. "...gobble, gobble, gobble...."nats (race begins) the 14th annual applied materials/silicon valley turkey trot hit the streets here in downtown san jose despite worries about rain and unhealthy air. no one happier about that than the event founder carl guardino.carl guardino/silicon valley leadership group "....14 days of smoke alerts from the fires that have been plaguing our state but today some 21,000 folks will help us hit our ambitious goal of raising $1 million dollars for needy families in the bay area..." pounding the pavement from santa clara street to the finish line at sap pavilion, the 5 k walk and 10 k run, which includes many serious competitors, is mostly about amateur athletes working up an

helping out a california man whose truck was severely burned while trying to escape the camp fire. this is allyn pierce's old toyota tundra. pierce used that truck to evacuate patients and staff from the hospital where he works as a registered nurse. he then tried to get out of the town of paradise himself only to deal with traffic gridlock. and pierce says that nearly cost him his life. ( james )

once toyota heard about pierce's story... the company gave him a brand new truck. and the automaker has offered to take the old truck off pierce's hands to display it in it's showroom to show off its durability. believe it or not the burned tundra still runs! francisco ...a couple of police officers, along with deputies and fire fighters ... spent thanksgiving morning delivering meals to the elderly. kron4's phillipe djegal has more on their mission to give back. nats- both officers alan katz and dexter tsang are familiar with the good san francisco police do on holidays.officer alan katz/sfpd- "my father was a police officer out here, uh, my mother worked at dispatch out here." and, both feel honored to be apart of the

group of officers delivering thanksgiving meals to seniors who otherwise might go without one.officer dexter tsang/sfpd- "my father was a police officer with this same department for 32 years, and uh, before i got in, he took me along for this, uh, volunteer program as well. so, i wanted to do it. this is my first time doing it since i've been in the department."nats- "hey hows it going mam?" officers tsang and katz made more than a dozen stops in chinatown and north beach. nats- "oh, thank you. thank you." not only giving them a chance to make people happy...nats- "hi, we brought thanksgiving dinner, ok." but also interact with the public they serve -- in a calm and relaxed environment. officer alan katz/sfpd- "theres a lot of people on the street that haven't dealt with the police before, that never even met a police officer before." but now these families know officers do more than just respond to crimes. officer dexter tsang/sfpd- "i think i'm doing my part just by giving back to the community and giving them a meal for thanksgiving." so, for the elderly who couldn't stand in line and eat their meal the lady shaw senior center in chinatown... law enforcement made sure fewer people were left out and still enjoyed a holiday hot meal. in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news.

( darya ) now that thanksgiving is over ...its time to drop the turkey leg ... and pick up a crab claw. vicki liviakis has more on the dungeness crab season in this edition of dine and dish. turkey. deep fried, brined, roasted, smoked. sure, it's the traditional centerpiece of your holiday meal. but, not for everybody. here's something to knock the bird ofits perch. this heaping platter of lobster tails is about to make one family very happy. we're here at fog harbor at pier 39 in the city's fisherman's wharf area. tourists flock here for the fish and the local dungeness crab . it's one of several restaurants serving up diners on thanksgiving. bob partrite particularly excited about the fresh crab brought

in from bodega since it's now in season. the heart healthy salmon is seasoned with curry and topped with lavender chutney. not to be ignored, sides like string beans and squash. fresh sour dough rolls out of the oven. and a green salad. which rates high amoung those who are counting calories. and not a pumpkin pie in sight... this pumpkin bread pudding though is enough to stuff you - like a turkey. in san francisco, vicki liviakis kron 4 news.
