(grant) breaking news at five -- first fire -- then flooding... tonight - the people in butte county are dealing with another potential disaster.there's flash flooding in the area already devastated by the camp fire. this is video showing highway 99 flooded near chico -- and some of the surrounding area in durham. hello i'm grant lodes. (catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis.at one point highway 99 had to be closed.... it's bad enough - that water rescuers have been sent into the chico area... here's a closer look at the flash flood warning that's in effect until 9:30 tonight. it includes paradise and magalia.... an evacuation warning has been issued for the hamlin canyon and lower neal zones - because of flooding. this is some video from chico -- showing the how the rain is affecting

neighborhoods there... streets look like rivers -- backyards are underwater...and this could still get worse. (grant) let's get to kron4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow - who's tracking the flash flooding. . lawrence karnow: flooding continues in butte county after very heavy rain. heavy and gusty winds pounded the bay area. some local mountains had over 3 and a half inches of rain. showers continue on doppler radar. the showers will diminish overnight. there is another storm headed our way late friday night and saturday morning. we will get a break on sunday and monday but more rain is possible on tuesday and wednesday of next week.

(catherine) continuing our coverage now of the storm that hit today... the heavy rain forced a few trees down across the bay area. (grant) kron four's philippe djegal reports from the east bay.... where tree trimmers are in the midst of their busy season. (philippe) over saturation and poor upkeep led this old oak tree to topple over on richmond boulevard in oakland.

phillip byers/trimmer- "we got the call this morning, but it happened at around 11 o'clock last night." veteran trimmer phillip byers with vega's tree service says another company had maintained the oak over the years... but didn't recognize in the time the leaning limbs were hazardous.phillip byers/trimmer- "the tree wasn't trimmed correctly. so, yes, the water, it got saturated in the ground and because all the weight is was onto the lefthand side. heavy rain -- its inevitable for it to fall." it ended up landing on a car parked in the driveway... but missed hitting a house, because another tree stopped it from dropping all the way to the ground.phillip byers/trimmer- "when we get calls for emergencies, those are tough, because it sucks to see the client going through that. you know, sometimes their emergencies where we're sawing trees in their living rooms, you know, that's the tragic part about keeping safety first." the downed tree also knocked out some power lines... leaving several neighbors without electricity through the afternoon. down the street, drivers navigated through deep puddles of standing water. and, in moraga, the contra costa county public works department responded to a landslide on pinehurst road. the downed trees and mud were cleared from the roadway by late morning. philippe djegal, kron four news. (catherine) happening now... an investigation is underway after a stabbing victim and a shooting victim were both found inside a home in a quiet san jose neighborhood this morning. one of the victims has died.. kron4's haaziq madyun has the story.. a deadly stabbing following a violent altercation at a home here on ayer avenue in san jose. it happened around 8:30 thursday morning. san jose

police investigators say officers responded to a welfare check and before they arrived the call was updated to a stabbing. once on the scene they found two adult male victims. the stabbing victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police also found a man suffering from a gunshot wound sota neighbor says the home belongs to an elderly couple who lived there with their adult son. he asked not to reveal his identitysot that was the general sentiment by other neighbors here as well who say the family has lived in this quiet vendome neighborhood for over thirty years. police are withholding the names of both the stabbing and shooting victims. however investigators say the suspect was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries...in san jose haaziq madyun kron4news (grant)(grant) salesforce

ceo mark benioff has once again donated a chunk of his personal fortune to help the city of san francisco's fight to solve the homeless crisis. kron4's maureen kelly gets a tour of a building that is set to be turned into housing. this one is my favorite.gail seagraves is showing me the unit inside the bristol hotel that she wants to move into i can put a bed right there.gail became homeless 12 years ago ...and has lived in an sro for 10 years....once she moves into the 58 unit building...she will now have access to a communal kitchen and her own private bathroom.i can't wait to not have to wear shower shoesand once she and the other tenants move in to these units....that will create 58 vacancies in supporting housing units they are moving out of that can go to other homeless people currently living in shelters or navigation centers.the tenderloin housing clinic's executive director says were close to being outbid by a for profit developer when he went to mayor breed for help in getting the funding to secure the six million they needed to fund the non profit's leasing of the building for the first 5 years. not everyone said yes

but mark benioff said yes, as soon as i ask him the salesforce ceo has made the homelessness crisis in his hometown his personal mission...he and his company being big backers of prop c....which will tax the city's biggest companies in order to raise an estimated 300 million dollars to fund homeless programs. bristol hotel is a preview, and this announcement here today is a preview of what is to come. because the city will finally have the money to do it not just to do this what to do so many other things that are on our list it's a beginning of a whole parade of new investments to end homelessness in our city. but it's unclear when the city will be able to cash in on prop c funding since it's currently stuck in legal limbo. at issue is whether or not it can be enacted without approval of two thrids of the voters. the new tax revenue will be collected starting january 1 but the city won't have the authorization to spend it until potential legal questions are ironed out maureen kelly kron4 news

(grant) some grim statistics from the centers for disease control today.babies born today can expect to live significantly shorter lives than babies born just a few years ago.the average life expectancy has dropped by 100 days in three years.according to the c=d=c there are two causes: a big uptick in suicides and drug overdoses. natthe bay area is not immune to the opioid epidemic.so many addicts used bart's civic center station to shoot up that the passageway had to be closed off.according to the c=d=c, deaths from heroin overdoses have leveled off in the past two years.so have deaths from pills --- oxycodone and similar medications.the explosive growth has been in fentanyl deaths .... much stronger synthetic opioids.that's caused a 16 percent jump in fatal drug deaths in just three years.those deaths are overwhelmingly concentrated in the east.california is one of 22 states below the national average.west virginia,

common here in the bay area... and some quick thinking t-mobile employees helped catch two men accused of robbing a store in oklahoma. reporter cassandra sweetman has the story. voice of sarah jensen/norman police department: "there's just lot of quick thinking action."when two masked men walked into this t-mobile in norman.... it was obvious to employees that they wouldn't be paying customers.sarah jensen/norman police department: "brandished a small baseball bat and began threatening the employees at the store, demanding items." the suspects... identified by police as steven bivins and sharod brown of texas... rounded up the two young employees... forcing them to a backroom in the store.that's where police say, the employees were ordered to fill a trash bag full of the store's priciest merchandise. voice of sarah jensen/norman

how is it looking tonight? absolutely beautiful out here. the winter storm is certainly a welcome gift to the sierra.i was up at heavenly mountain resort, here in south lake tahoe today.here's video from earlier... skiers and riders here have been out all morning taking fresh turns at the 'california trail.'resort officials say heavenly got a nice blanket of seven inches of fresh powder over the last two days.the resort just opened almost 2 weeks ago..i met some skiers from the bay area who are out here hitting the slopes,many people here happy to snowwe have not heard any complaints. just excitement. and i do want to mention the road conditions getting here are tough.some are covered in snow - plow trucks are out in force -but you do need chains if you do not have snow tires or all wheel drive - about 25 miles on highway 50 before you head out this way.live in south lake tahoe,gayle ong kron 4 news.

"we have 514 open disasters across half this globe from the mariana islands all the way to the virgin islands." "long says some communities are woefully unprepared for natural disasters making his job impossible." (pam) a dramatic flood rescue -- caught on camera today in southern california. firefighters pulled a man from the los angeles river near griffith park.... as he was clinging to a tree. the rescue involved highway patrol, a park ranger and a chopper. after a struggle to make contact with the man ... the rescuer eventually pulled him into the fire department helicopter. the fire department said, he was conscious and alert, but will need to be treated for hypothermia. it is unclear why he was in the river.. why he was in the river.. but officials say at last check, he was in fair condition.
