snow skiers and riders have anxiously been waiting for. we sent kron 4's gayle ong to the high country to see how things look. a reminder to slow down...officer jeff billings says speed is a big factor in accidents..lifts are spinning as riders and skiers hit the slopes in the sierra.northstar is packed down and smooth... receiving eight inches of fresh snow in the last 24 hours.allowing the resort to open additional terrain.

resorts: "this storm has actually been fantastic, because it came in with a warmer front which means that it really spackles over that summer debris, and then we get hit with the colder sections of the storm at the middle and at the end so it lays this nice thick layer of snow on top of that warmer spackle and makes a perfect base for the rest of the season.">over at squaw - a foot of snow at the upper elevations.resort officials say they have accumulated two and a half feet of snow since wednesday's storm.and have opened new terrain there and at sister resort alpine meadows...and mount rose - the first ski resort to open in late october -the snow continues to blanket the trails with another 4 inches overnight..down south.. the sierra gets over a foot of snow with no signs of stopping..on opening day.. kirkwood got a total of 14 inches of snow in two days.. opening another chair eight days ahead of scheduleso what it all means for skiers and riders??here at heavenly, they certainly can't get enough of mother nature's gift.

after a massive earthquake struck near the city friday morning. here's karin (ka) caifa with the latest.

will require apparently a great deal of recovery and efforts.aftershocks were felt immediately following the quake... including one registering a 5.7 magnitude. dr. lucy jones/ seismologist: "people in anchorage should expect to be feeling aftershocks for most of today, and potentially for a lot longer time... people should be expecting to feel some level of aftershocks for a few years." officials are now working to assess the damage - repair roads and make sure everyone is accounted for. anchorage schools are closed through tuesday.i'm karin caifa, reporting.> ( terisa ) the big game is expected to happen today...a look at what's at stake between cal and stanford is next in sports. sunday in oakland, but today-- the kansas city front office made a major decision.. cutting star running back kareem hunt in response to this video published this morning. --security footage obtained by tmz captures hunt...shoving and kicking a woman at a cleveland hotel. --this incident happened back in february, but no arrests were made or charges filed. --but within hours of the video coming out, the chiefs cut him... in a statement, they said they knew about the incident and it was under investigation... even spoke with hunt directly, but they've since found out he lied to them about what happened... which led to his release. hunt gave a statement to espn saying 'i want to apologize for my actions. i deeply regret what i did. i hope to move on from this.' today in alameda--jon gruden didn't want to address the video, kept it strictly to football. sunday's game is a meeting of opposite ends of the spectrum. kansas city is red hot at 9-and-2...best record in the afc, while the raiders are 2-and-9...the worst mark in the league. chiefs...led by patrick mahomes who leads the nfl with 37-touchdowns. it's a reunion of sorts for gruden and chiefs head coach andy reid... who worked

( terisa ) a man arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was asleep at the wheel beforehe was finally pulled over. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, the c-h-p says, it appears the man's vehicle, a tesla, was driving itself while he was asleep.. (tesla cruising down 101)it was just after 3:30 this morning. a silver tesla s sedan, not unlike this one, wassouthbound on 101 near whipple avenue. the tesla was doing about 70 miles per hour but the driver did not respond when officers tried to pull him over for speeding says chp officer art montiel.art montiel/chp "....they pulled alongside and observed the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel..."after failing to get the driver's attention,

officers theorized the tesla's driver-assist feature was engaged. they ran a traffic break and used their vehicles to get the tesla's attention. ( terisa ) ( terisa ) parents say someone is dealing drugs at a high school in salinas, and kids are using between clases... one woman says her daughter used pills between classes at north salinas high. another parent says her son got high after someone sold him a pot brownie. she later took him to the hospital, where doctors found marijuana in his system.

something new. you know, peers are bringing it into the school and they want to try something new. but also, because it is convenient, you have access to."> to."> the school says there's been an increase in drug-related suspensions. officials usually meet with students after they return to class. but some parents say that's not enough. ( terisa ) happening today...an effort to get more guns off the streets in san jose. the police department along with the city and county leaders are hosting a gun buy back event today. officers will take your handguns, rifles, shotguns,and assault weapons in exchange for cash. the event is from 9 until one at the san jose police substation on great oaks parkway. ( terisa ) an off duty bay area police officer stopped an armed robbery in progress. it was one of several robberies that took place friday morning in vallejo. one of the incidents was caught on camera.

here's kron4's haaziq madyun with the story. you are looking at surveillance video of a robbery that took place around 7:30am friday at this chevron gas station on springs road in vallejo. this incident is one of three armed robberies in vallejo that took place in the same vicenity within a 90-minute time frame. about a half an hour before incident occurred officers responded to a man armed with a knife involved in a robbery in the 2300 block of springs road. the suspect ran into the vallejo charter school forcing it to be locked down for about an hour until police located the suspect and arrested the suspect. then at 8amsotthat woman was witness here at the ihaw-ihaw restaurant in the springstowne center where another armed robbery happenedsotlittle did the gunman know

living in tents in the cold and wet weather.... have motivated workers at a south san francisco child care center to help out. kron4's maureen kelly reports that in addition to buying coats for children affected by the fire they're also sending notes of support. sweatshirts and sweaters....fleece jackets and raincoats were rung up.....all of them headed to kids forced to camp out because of the camp fire.the money to purchase them was raised by these workers from the 2nd generation childcare center during their annual thanksgiving fundraiser...it was the bleak images of the devestation that moved these workers to use the 300 dollars they collected to help kids who lost everything....at least stay warm as the weather turns cold and wet.as a parent i can't imagine not being able to give my child a coat when it's coldthe childcare center, run by bright horizon's is located on genetech's south san francisco campus.

spokesperson for genentech when the company heard about the coat drive, they kicked in an additional $300 so the childcare workers could double up the amount of coats they were able to buythat turned out to be roughly 60 coats, with the twice as nice shop in san bruno helping out with a discount. they stuffed a note in each pocket....... send any warmth from south san francisco, thinking of you, love bright horizonswe want to make sure the people in paradise knew that they were loved and that were still thinking of them and want to help them even though we are not therea retired 2nd generation teacher who has a home nearby in oroville is driving the coats up there along with other donations she's collected. she expects they will be greatly appreciated. i'm sure there's gonna be a lot of tears, a lot of gratitude a lot of hugs. they packed up the coats....with the notes inside....which they hope will warm the camp fire victims bodies....as well as their spirts. maureen kelly kron4 news ( terisa ) still ahead... people in the

penny... it wasn't tax payer money in this case... but this morning we're learning the concord police department spent 35 thousand dollars for its video released this week. kron 4's ella sogomonian met with the police chief who explains the costs. sot: ella sogomonian // "im standing at todos santos plaza where a portion of that lip sync challenge video was filmed by the police department with a local non profit although they spent tens of thousands of dollars and some might find that totally absurd the department is standing by that saying it was an important way to create a better working relationship with specifically the latino community as well as use it as a sort of recruitment." (nats: music)concord police say they filmed a lip sync challenge using the tune bailando for a day and a half after they were invited to do so by a local non profit monument crisis center. they paid $34,000 to a private adverstising company out of san francisco to film the elaborate production and officers overtime funded by asset forfeiture money.sot:

( terisa ) an off duty bay area police officer stopped an armed robbery in progress. it was one of several robberies that took place friday morning in vallejo. one of the incidents was caught on camera. here's kron4's haaziq madyun with the story. you are looking at surveillance video of a robbery that took place around 7:30am friday at this chevron gas station on springs road in vallejo. this incident is one of three armed robberies in vallejo that took place in the same vicenity within a 90-minute time frame. about a half an hour before incident occurred officers responded to a man armed with a knife involved in a robbery in the 2300 block of springs road. the suspect ran into the vallejo charter school forcing it to be locked down for about an hour until police located the suspect and arrested the suspect. then at 8amsotthat woman was witness here at the ihaw-ihaw restaurant in the springstowne

living in tents in the cold and wet weather.... have motivated workers at a south san francisco child care center to help out. kron4's maureen kelly reports that in addition to buying coats for children affected by the fire they're also sending notes of support. sweatshirts and sweaters....fleece jackets and raincoats were rung up.....all of them headed to kids forced to camp out because of the camp fire.the money to purchase them was raised by these workers from the 2nd generation childcare center during their annual thanksgiving fundraiser...it was the bleak images of the devestation that moved these workers to use the 300 dollars they collected to help kids

enforcement take on the lip- sync challenge across the country and the bay area... and apparently those challenges can cost a pretty penny... it wasn't tax payer money in this case... but this morning we're learning the concord police department spent 35 thousand dollars for its video released this week. kron 4's ella sogomonian met with the police chief who explains the costs. sot: ella sogomonian // "im standing at todos santos plaza where a portion of that lip sync challenge video was filmed by the police department with a local non profit although they spent tens of thousands of dollars and some might find that totally absurd the department is standing by that saying it was an important way to create a better working relationship with specifically the latino community as well as use it as a sort of recruitment." school says there's been an increase in drug-related suspensions. officials usually meet with students after they return to class. but some parents say that's not enough. ( terisa ) an off duty bay area police officer stopped an armed robbery in progress. it was one of several robberies that took place friday morning in vallejo. one of the incidents was caught on camera. here's kron4's haaziq madyun with the story. you are looking at surveillance video of a robbery that took place around 7:30am friday at this chevron gas station on springs road in vallejo. this incident is one of three armed robberies in vallejo that took place in the same vicenity within a 90-minute time frame. about a half an hour before incident occurred officers responded to a man armed with a knife involved in a robbery in the 2300 block of springs road. the suspect ran into the vallejo charter school forcing it to be locked down for about

that in addition to buying coats for children affected by the fire they're also sending notes of support. sweatshirts and sweaters....fleece jackets and raincoats were rung up.....all of them headed to kids forced to camp out because of the camp fire.the money to purchase them was raised by these workers from the 2nd generation childcare center during their annual thanksgiving fundraiser...it was the bleak images of the devestation that moved these workers to use the 300 dollars they collected to help kids who lost everything....at least stay warm as the weather turns cold and wet.as a parent i can't imagine not being able to give my child a coat when it's coldthe childcare center, run by bright horizon's is located on genetech's south san francisco campus. spokesperson for genentech when the company heard about the coat drive, they kicked in an additional $300 so the childcare workers could double
