parents, teachers and health professionals from the u-s surgeon general-- doctor jerome adams is warning about the spike in e-cigarette use in teenagers. adams issued an advisory about the negative health consequences of e-cigarettes today. he says one out of five high school students is currently using the product. the problem spreads to those even younger. one survey reported a 50-percent increase in vaping among middle school- age children. adams says no amount of nicotine is safe. the chemical can do particular damage to young brains... because they are still developing. adams warns that the epidemic of vaping could contribute to-- quote-- "a whole generation addicted to nicotine." opioids offer little chronic pain benefit and wane over time. the results come from a review of nearly 100 randomized trials published in the journal of the american medical association. the analysis found for adults with chronic pain, opioids offer narrow improvements over a placebo for pain and physical functioning, on average. and those benefits also tend to decrease over time. the analysis comes as federal agencies and other officials in recent years have been cracking down on opioids prescription. kron 4's dan kerman has more on why there will be no civil trial to determine if the sheriff's deputy who shot lopez... crossed the line. at a news conference tuesday sonoma county sheriff rob giordano announced the county had reached a 3 million dollar settlement with the family of andy lopez.sot rob giordano/sonoma county sheriff :08the reason for a settlement is a 13 year old is dead and the right thing to do for the community to move forward is to settle the case. lopez's family filed a federal civil right lawsuit against the county after lopez was shot and killed by sonoma county sheriffs deputy eric gelhaus back in october of 2013... at the time lopez was walking down moreland avenue south of santa rosa carrying what looked to be an assault rifle .. in fact, it was an airsoft bb gun. the settlement means there will be no trail. i hope its a beginning for the family to move forward.since the shooting the sheriff says the department has improved its outreach to the community.in

announced a lawsuit today ... against a litany of prescription drug makers and distributors -- for their role in the opiod epidemic. the suit was filed on behalf of the city and the state of california. it accuses the makers of drugs such as oxycontn and fentanyl .... of misleading doctors and patients. and wholesalers such as the san francisco- based mckesson corporation ... of failing to monitor and report suspicious drug sales. the state department of public health says, opioid addiction caused the deaths of more than 21- hundred californians last year. the suit asks for damages for the costs associated with treating the opioid epidemic .... and asks for an injunction to stop alleged misleading marketing tactics. a new study examines the effect of closing one of the east bay's major emergency rooms. the report was commissioned by the institute of regional development at u-c berkeley kron4's haaziq

bringing two back to back days of major waves at the legendary mavericks surf spot. today's swells were estimated to be about 25 feet. kron 4's maureen kelly talked to some of those braving the conditions. here's some video that gives you a seal's eye view of the action. shot by a documentary filmaker tracking the women who will be competing in the mavericks big wave contest for the first time . the surfer on the left is one of the women invited to take part. she and the others were close to making history this week.....because of the major swells brought to the bay area by this weekend's storm.this
