her family shared this statement with "e.t." "our family is heart broeken marshall. penny was a tomboy who loved sports, doing puzzles of any kind, drinking milk and pepsi together and being with her family." >> if it gets too hot, pepsi cola hits the spot. >> the milk and pepsi reference is that the unusual combination was one of penny's favorite drinks and just so happened to be laverne's too. >> drink more pepsi. >> "e.t." had a long history with the star, who always looked back at the series fondly and how fans reacted to her iconic character. >> they call me laverne. they call me shirley. they call me sinnedcindy. i respond to anything williams,o played shirley, were friends on screen and off. the two once told us that when they were shooting their classic series they didn't realize how popular the number one comedy was. >> we were not totally aware of what was happening at the time.

>> we weren't aware of much. >> we were locked on a sound stage trying to figure out funny scenes. >> "e.t.'s" last interview with penny was on the set of "the odd couple." the episode was a tribute to her late brother garry marshall. >> sorry for your loss. thank you. >> he's in there? >> garry had created the original "odd couple" series as well as "laverne & shirley." she told us she would forever be grateful for how he launched her own career. >> my brother gave me a life. he gave me a life. and i appreciate it. and i try not to let him down. >> besides acting penny was known for her successful career as a feature film director she was behind the camer and "a league of their own," both starring tom hanks. upon her passing tom tweeted, "good-bye, penny. man, did we laugh a lot. wish we still could. love you, hanks." penny was not just a fighter but a force to be reckoned with. >> if we're lucky enough to be

successful, they're waiting for you to fail. stuff happens in life. you've got to deal with it. >> when "e.t." sat down with her in 2012 she was in remission after a very public battle with lung cancer that spread to her brain. she got very fired up talking about the tabloid reports. >> your battle with cancer -- >> yes. >> -- has been very public. >> because the public is stupid people. because the rags write about it. and they get it wrong. and they have me dying every three months still. and i'm fine. >> she was a regular person who just happened to become famous. and i don't think she ever forgot where she came from 37. >> "e.t." was with her friend and former tv love interest jay leno who shared hust split. >> what, and leaveaverne unchaperoned? >> you know, i was a new comedian. it was probably the height of her stardom with "laverne & shirley." they were huge stars. she was so kind and nice to me. it came as such a shock. it really was.

>> you know, no show spent more time with penny and cindy than "e.t." they shared so many memories with us. and we'll have all of that for you a little bit later on in the show. but right now let's move on and let's get to some movie news. this weekend there is so much in theaters and we are breaking it all down starting with "mary poppins returns." >> good thing you come along when you did, mary poppins. >> everything is possible. even the impossible. >> this is a film that's completely uncynical. and as my husband calls, it it's like a joy bomb. >> off we lot of cdi. i think we barely have any green screen other than the animation seekence. and people are on wires. >> the role of mary poppins was written especially for emily. if she said no there would be no film. lin-manuel miranda is her sidekick. meryl streep plays her wacky cousin. >> i play a kind of a -cray-cra. tatyana trebunovsky is her name.
