honored corporal ronil singh with an emotional vigil last night. he was shot and killed on wednesday after stopping a suspected drunk driver. after a two day manhunt.. police captured gustavo perez arriaga just out outside of bakersfield. kron 4's justine waldman reports arriaga was not the only one arrested. reggie singh / brother he was my older brother. yes. he's not coming back but there's a lot of people out there that misses him." he could not hold back the tears, as corp ron singh brother reflected on his loss. now captured, for the killing..32-year-old gustavo perez arriaga. he surrendered and is seen here with swat officers as he came out of a home near bakersfield. which stunned neighbors. "i got woken up this morning to the sounds of 'this is the police, come out with your hands up.'" also

arrested 5 other people, including the suspects brother and co-worker, for helping arriaga escape and misleading investigators. the stanislaus county sheriff said the suspect is a known gang member and will now be charged with murder.sheriff adam christianson: "he is a criminal. he has two prior arrests for dui. remember that's the reason that officer singh stopped him because we had probable cause to believe that he was under the influence of alcohol. past behavior is typically a predictor of future behavior. and an officer loses his life over a dui stop." corp singh was 33-years old. he leaves behind a wife and 5 month old boy. he came to america from fiji to become a police officer. his suspected killer, the sheriff says crossed into the country illegally after crossing the border in arizona. the sheriff says he was trying to go to mexico before his arrest.. which happened after multiple law enforcement agencies followed up on tips and used surviellence.reggie

the suspects entered another a-t-and-t store in petaluma.. they demanded the staff to give up their belongings. they then drove off. it take police long to find the car. but they are still looking suspects. ( marty ) police say a teenager tried to stab a man at a home on treasure island. officers say a 16-year-old boy tried to enter the home of the 46-year old victim. there was a fight between the two. police say the boy stabbed the man. the boy apparently ran away and officers haven't yet found him. the victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds. ( marty ) a young california woman-- killed in the netherlands-- is being remembered in her hometown in shasta county. sarah papenheim was a member of the foothill high school band near redding before she graduated. more than 250 people gathered at the high school for a service to remember papenheim thursday night. the 21-year-old was stabbed to death in the netherlands two weeks ago. she was attending school at erasmus

university in ( marty ) the suspect in papenheim's killing is her 23-year-old male roommate. a source close to the investigation said joel schelling is believed to be a dutch national... who befriended papenheim through their love of music. ( marty ) authorities are still trying to track down a san quentin escapee. police believe shalom mendoza carjacked a vehicle just after he escaped. this is surveillance video of a man walking up to the victim and taking the car. police say the carjacking happened around the same time of the escape wednesday night. the victim called 9-1-1. authorities say the escapee was last seen in a toyota rav 4 ... license plate number 6-s-t-z-5-0-2.

( marty ) in the south bay... a santa clara county sheriff's lieutenant is accused of faking the extent of an injury... and receiving workers' compensation. police arrested lt. mandy henderson after sheriff's investigators saw her engaging in "strenuous workouts" despite her injury. henderson was arrested on a felony warrant. ( marty ) police say a goose was shot in the neck at the same park in southern california where someone dumped hundreds of prescription pills. rescuers say the bird had been flying around the park in huntington beach for about a week...with the arrow still in its neck. that means it was likely shot at the same time someone scattered prescription pills at the park last week. it's unclear if the incidents are connected. but rescuers call it a strange coincidence.

disappearing they began noticing patterns of usage and that many items were missing on a certain day of the week. when staff members spotted a man appearing to steal books back on december 18th - they called sacramento county deputies. investigators went to the home of 46-year old shahin sadighian with a search warrant. where they discovered close to three-thousand stolen library books and up to four- thousand dvds - totaling more than 100-thousand dollars in stolen items. (hampton, sac sheriff)it has some very odd characteristics, they werent motivated for the most part, and most of them still had their identifying markings. sass says nearly half of the recovered items - were taken within the last year. ( marty ) police say a teenager tried to stab a man at a home on treasure island.

officers say a 16-year-old boy tried to enter the home of the 46-year old victim. there was a fight between the two. police say the boy stabbed the man. the boy apparently ran away and officers haven't yet found him. the victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds. ( marty ) a young california woman-- killed in the netherlands-- is being remembered in her hometown in shasta county. sarah papenheim was a member of the foothill high school band near redding before she graduated. more than 250 people gathered at the high school for a service to remember papenheim thursday night. the 21-year-old was stabbed to death in the netherlands two weeks ago. she was attending school at erasmus university in rotterdam. the suspect in papenheim's killing is her 23-year-old male roommate. a source close to the investigation said joel schelling is believed to be a dutch national... who befriended papenheim through their love of music. ( marty ) police say a goose was shot in the neck at the same park in southern california where someone

dumped hundreds of prescription pills. rescuers say the bird had been flying around the park in huntington beach for about a week...with the arrow still in its neck. that means it was likely shot at the same time someone scattered prescription pills at the park last week. it's unclear if the incidents are connected. but rescuers call it a strange coincidence.

high flu activity -- new york city, where holiday tourism is in full swing, and two million people are expected to pack times square on new year's eve. the c-d-c also reported four more flu-related deaths in children, bringing the total to 11 for the current season. the best flu prevention -- the c-d-c says, is a flu vaccine, for those six months and older. and as long as the flu is still circulating in your area -- it's not too late to get one. it won't stop all flu, but it'll lessen the severity of symptoms.and if you're one of those people packed into crowded spaces this holiday weekend, wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, the c-d-c says, to help prevent picking up the flu.in washington, i'm karin caifa. police are looking for the people who attempted to rob two a-t-and-t stores. on december 18th the robbers walked into an a-t-and-t store in santa rosa, brandished a firearm and demanded items from the employees. an employee saw that the firearm was jammed and refused to comply.. the suspects then ran away. a few hours later the suspects entered another a-t-and-t store in petaluma.. they demanded the staff to give up their belongings. they then drove off. it take police long to find the car. but they are still looking for the suspects. ( marty ) police say a teenager tried to stab a man at a home on treasure island. officers say a 16-year-old boy tried to enter the home of the 46-year old victim. there was a fight between the two. police say the boy stabbed the man. the boy apparently ran away and officers haven't yet found him. the victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds. ( marty ) a young california woman-- killed in

the netherlands-- is being remembered in her hometown in shasta county. sarah papenheim was a member of the foothill high school band near redding before she graduated. more than 250 people gathered at the high school for a service to remember papenheim thursday night. the 21-year-old was stabbed to death in the netherlands two weeks ago. she was attending school at erasmus university in rotterdam. ( marty ) the suspect in papenheim's killing is her 23-year-old male roommate. a source close to the investigation said joel schelling is believed to be a dutch national... who befriended papenheim through their love of music. police believe shalom mendoza carjacked a vehicle just after he escaped. this is surveillance video of a man walking up to the victim and taking the car. police say the carjacking happened around the same time of the escape wednesday night. the victim called 9-1-1. authorities say the escapee was last seen in a toyota rav 4 ... license plate number 6-s-t-z-5-0-2. ( marty ) a woman is in the hospital after a car hit her.... and she went crashing ááthrougháá the car's windshield. and the man police believe is responsible for the crash-- kept driving with the victim inside his car. it happened in sacramento county... reporter jessica mensch explains how it all unfolded. flares and police lights illuminate this citrus heights roadwhere a suspected drunk driver hit and badly injured a 27 year old woman on her skateboard.(lieutenant david gutierrez, citrus heights police department)"there's a

( marty ) changes are coming for drivers with "clean air vehicle stickers." it was a perk for people who

if you want to increase your odds of success this year, our health expert, karen owoc, is here with her tricks to help make your new habits stick. (2-shot) good morning karen. 1. commit to thirty days consider the first 30 days as the foundation for creating a new habit. it takes time to make a new behavior stick, but you'll increase the chances of achieving your new pledge if you commit to making it through these 30 days. 2. do it daily whatever your goal - whether it's to go to the gym or eat 3 fruits a day - then do it daily for the first 30 days. it's easier to nail down the habit if you do it eve-ryday versus once every few days. the goal is

consistency. note: if you pledged to go to the gym, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to work out vigorously every day. just get yourself to the gym for 30 consecutive days -even if it means walking in and taking just a few spins on the bike. the key is to get in the habit of getting up and going. 3. mingle with and going. 3. mingle with role models make a point of seeking out people whose habits you want to emulate. a study revealed that you're more likely to become fat if you spend time with an obese friend. that is, you become what you spend time around. therefore, if your spouse is overweight, eats junk food, and doesn't exercise, then it will be more difficult (but not impossible) to stick with your pledge to create new healthy habits. although you cannot change your spouse, you can still change. seek out and spend time with your role models.

4. negate negatives with "but" stop the negative self-talk. it can lead to overeating (i.e., emotional eating). when you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts, such as "i can never stick with my new year's resolutions.", follow it with the word, "but". when you use the word "but", it negates the statement preceding it. so when you catch yourself saying, "i can never stick with my new year's resolutions," follow it with, "but i have the tools to help me this time." use "but" to stop negativity in its tracks. 5. own it resolutions fail because they're created based on what someone else (such as your spouse, doctor, or parent) is telling you to change. be sure your new year's resolution is something you want to achieve. and second, be sure it's not based on what you "should" do. the word "should" implies

something is 'broken' and is a form of negative self-talk. 6. relish the talk. 6. relish the reward rewards are the end goal of every habit, so notice the reward. if your goal is to exercise for 30 days, then embrace how great you feel after you exercise - e.g., more energetic, less stressed, and proud of your accomplishmen t. when it comes to forming a new habit, you chase the rewards because they're not only satisfying, they teach you which actions are worth repeating (habit). 7. change the behavior (not the reward) if you resolve to

stop watching tv after work because that's when you transform into a couch potato and eat mindlessly, be sure when you replace that behavior with something else, you keep the reward. that is, if you watch television (the behavior) to decompress and relax (the re-ward), then find another behavior that still helps you relax, such as meditation, massage, or exercise. 8. keep it simple and realistic 8. keep it simple exercise. 8. keep it simple and realistic don't make your new habit too complicated. keep it simple and realistic. one reason resolutions fail is because you're initially bubbling over with motivation and enthusiasm, and your goals become overly ambitious. consequently, they're not achievable or they're too difficult to sustain. for example, you resolve to "jog every morning for an hour", but you haven't ex-ercised in a year. instead, aim for 20 to 30 minutes (or even 10!) and gradually increase the duration as the weeks go by. this is when you need to cool your de-sire for instant gratification. 9. be specific

and consistent resolutions fail because they're too vague. for example, if you want to start exercising, schedule a specific time of day to do it, the place, type of exercise, and the duration or distance. you'll be more likely to be you establish these cues. temptations no need to torture yourself. rearrange your to increase the likeli-hood that you'll stick with your new habit. for example, if you vowed to not eat junk food for 30 days, then throw out any tempting remnants still lurking in your pantry, around the house, your desk, car, or other spots. remember... when you're tired, willpower wanes which makes it easier to abandon your resolution. ( marty )(2-shot)so what's the takeaway. aim to be imperfect. old habits are never extinguished; so it's easy to fall back on them. it's reasonable to assume that it'll take multiple attempts to create a new habit. as long as you keep trying, you are successful.
