( marty ) the attorney general's office says pg&e could in theory be charged with implied malice murder and involuntary manslaughter if its found to have caused any deadly fires. attorney general xavier becerra's office did ánot say it áwould charge the utility company with those crimes... only that the options are on the table. the attorney general's office made that surprise announcement in a report for a federal judge. who is overseeing pg&es probation case regarding the 2010 san bruno gas line explosion. reporter doug johnson spoke with fire survivors about this development.

( marty ) new this morning...police say they need your help finding the man who brutally attacked another man near a bart station. officers say melton kelly stomped a man near the powell street bart station. it happened friday at cyril magnin and ellis streets. police say the 25-year-old man also robbed the victim who is being treated at a hospital. ( marty ) officers in farifield are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital saturday night. it happened just before 9 in the parking lot of a restaurant on oliver road. the victim says two men pulled out a gun and then demanded his property. a struggle begans and the gun went off....hitting the victim. the suspects drove off in a black nissan fairfield police are asking you to give them a call if you know anything about the ( marty ) palo alto police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman. the suspect ran off when

the victim's boyfriend stopped the attack. kron 4's gayle ong spoke to the victim's friend and has more on the search suspect. palo alto detectives are looking for this man - who they say sexually assaulted a woman.it happened around 330 in the morning saturday on el camino real.authorities say a woman had been unloading items out of her vehicle to give to a friend,as she was walking back to meet her friend in the apartment complex,she felt someone grab her.the victim's friend katia shukh was waiting for her back in the apartment,

to run down the stairs at that time and he saw the guy, he tries to chase him.">shukh says the suspect followed her friend from grant avenue, which is a short dista nce from the apartment.a police report was filed immediately following the assault.multiple surveillance cameras captured the suspect.

inmate who escaped from san quentin prison and carjacked a bay area woman-- is now over.. police captured him 200 miles away... eating lunch at a taco bell. kron 4s dan thorn has the story. wanted for escaping from prison and carjacking a woman.. 21-year-old shalom mendoza is captured by police saturday afternoon. authorities got help from someone who spotted him eating at a taco bell in paso robles..sot: crystal vernoy says she was sitting in a booth behind mendoza. from

watching the news she easily spotted him and knew who he was...sot: the tattoo right above his eyebrow right here. it had a distinguished like money symbol on it and i just recognized it. crystal wasn't alone in recognizing mendoza..someone at the restaurant quietly called police...sot: then the gang task force guy walked in to the taco bell exactly where the guy was and told him he needed to stop doing what he was doing and put his hands up.. vernoy says he gave police a fake name at first..but was then taken away handcuffs..police say on wednesday mendoza escaped from san quentin state prison in san rafael. he was working outside of the prison walls when authorities say he took his opportunity to run. shortly after fleeing--mendoza is accused of carjacking a woman in a home depot parking lot.the theft was caught on surveillance video..police say mendoza threatened to kill the woman if she didn't hand over the keys.. on friday he was spotted at a dollar store in san miguel and the stolen toyota rav 4 was found abandoned along the 101 freeway. investigators believe mendoza was heading to the los angeles area...police finally got their man around 12:30 saturday afternoon..and witnesses were relieved..

( marty )... mendoza is facing felony charges of carjacking and escape. this morning he's being held at salinas valley state prison. ( marty ) the man police say is responsible for a triple homicide in santa barbara county is dead following a stand-f. deputies in orcutt shot and killed 43-year-old david mcnabb friday night. the victims include his 34- year-old sister, his 64- year-old mother, and a 63-year-old year old man.. officials say the victims were stabbed and beaten to death by the suspect, who also lived at the home. a 9-1-1 call brought police to the house. they found mcnabb barricaded inside with a rifle. it ended with police shooting the suspect. he was pronounced dead at a

hospital. ( marty ) the motive of the shooting is still under investigation. ( marty ) the federal government is requiring the california d-m-v to implement even stricter standards when it comes to the new 'real i-d". because of that, people who already waited in line to get the new i-d card are wondering what it means for them. kron 4's capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala has more from sacramento. if you stood in line at the dmv this year for a real i.d.... don't worry---you don't need to go back anytime soon.. starting in april - the federal government will require real i.d. applicants to provide two proofs of address at the dmv.that policy is stricter than what had been in been place previously. ((jaime garza - dmv spokesman)) "what we've been

doing is asking applicants to provide one proof of residency document when they came into the office, and the second proof would be satisfied when the real id driver license or card is delivered by mail to the applicant and return service is requested." beginning in october 2020 the new real id will be the only state identification accepted at airports and federal buildings.with the dmv already in the spotlight for long wait times and technology problems -- that's a concern for assemblymember jim patterson ((assm. jim patterson r- fresno)) "the bigger problem going forward is millions of californians are now going to rush the line for the real id between now and 2020 and my concern is the dmv is utterly unprepared for that large rush." ( marty ) oakland first friday's officials are hoping more people show up... following last months low turn out. this is video from a previous

(philippe) a few blocks away from these burned down apartments in san rafael's canal neighborhood... a timely -- generous surprise for at least four families who, up until this week, called the camelot apartments their home.dan hanlon/santa cop- "two families upstairs got completely burned out, everybody on the bottom suffered significant smoke and water damage." with spirts down -- first responders again coming to the rescue. this time showering fire victims with gifts and not water to put out flames.dan hanlon/santa cop- "we had a

little guy literally jumping for joy down there." outside of san rafael fire station 54 saturday morning... fire fighters and police officers who make up the san rafael santa cop program passed out toys to the children who lost everything in wednesday morning's fire. retired police officer dan hanlon founded the toy drive back in 2000. typically, it collects gifts for underprivleged kids to be distributed during the winter holiday season.dan hanlon/santa cop- "all four families involved with the burn, that lost everything, that benefited today through the program, were not part of our program for this christmas as far a receiving anything. so, it feels really good being able to bring some kind of closure to a dramatic experience the kids went through." in november, hanlon says the community stepped up with increased donations after learning the program had only received about half of the donations it typically gets heading into christmas. fortunately, there were enough toys to go

around to help these families too.dan hanlon/santa cop- "this year, we had 75 collection barrels out throughout the central marin area." a mother did sustain second degree burns on both her arms while saving her kids from the fire. but everyone survived. investigators say it's possible an unattended barbeque on the front deck across from one of the burned apartments caused the fire. in san rafael, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( marty ) officers in farifield are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital saturday night. it happened just before 9 in the parking lot of a restaurant on oliver road. the victim says two men pulled out a gun and then demanded his property. a struggle begans and the gun went

off....hitting the victim. the suspects drove off in a black nissan fairfield police are asking you to give them a call if you know anything attack.. ( marty ) palo alto police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman. the suspect ran off when the victim's boyfriend stopped the attack. kron 4's gayle ong spoke to the victim's friend and has more on the search for the suspect. palo alto detectives are looking for this man - who they say sexually assaulted a woman.it happened around 330 in the morning saturday on el camino real.authorities say a woman had been unloading items out of her vehicle to give to a friend,as she was walking back to meet her friend in the apartment complex,she felt someone grab her.

he pushed her to the ground onto her back then the suspect started straddling her, he started touching her genitals, over her clothing and he threatened her if she scamed.">the victim's friend katia shukh was waiting for her back in the apartment, shukh says the suspect followed her friend from grant avenue, which is a short dista nce from the apartment.a police report was filed immediately following the assault.multiple surveillance cameras captured the suspect.

on friday, several papers saw printing and distribution delays. the l-a times said that the attack appears to have originated from outside the u-s. the paper says malware was detected on its servers friday. workers there were forced to create workounds to get saturday editions printed. a memo said that no customer credit card or personal information had been compromised. other newspapers impacted include the baltimore sun ... the new york times ... and the wall street journal .. the attack did not impact the websites of those newspapers. inmate who escaped from san quentin prison and carjacked a bay area woman-- is now over.. police captured him 200 miles away... eating lunch at a taco

bell. kron 4s dan thorn has the story. wanted for escaping from prison and carjacking a woman.. 21-year-old shalom mendoza is captured by police saturday afternoon. authorities got help from someone who spotted him eating at a taco bell in paso robles..sot: crystal vernoy says she was sitting in a booth behind mendoza. from watching the news she easily spotted him and knew who he was...sot: the tattoo right above his eyebrow right here. it had a distinguished like money symbol on it and i just recognized it. crystal wasn't alone in recognizing mendoza..someone at the restaurant quietly called police...sot: then the gang task force guy walked in to the taco bell exactly where the guy was and told him he needed to stop doing what he was doing and put his hands up.. vernoy says he gave police a fake name at first..but was then taken away handcuffs..police say on wednesday mendoza escaped from san quentin state prison in san rafael. he was working outside of the prison walls when authorities say he took his opportunity to run. shortly after fleeing--mendoza is accused of carjacking a woman in a home depot parking lot.the theft was caught on

surveillance video..police say mendoza threatened to kill the woman if she didn't hand over the keys.. on friday he was spotted at a dollar store in san miguel and the stolen toyota rav 4 was found abandoned along the 101 freeway. investigators believe mendoza was heading to the los angeles area...police finally got their man around 12:30 saturday afternoon..and witnesses were relieved.. ( marty ) charges of carjacking and escape. this morning he's being held at salinas valley state prison. ( marty ) the man police say is responsible for a triple homicide in santa barbara county is dead following a stand-off. deputies in orcutt shot and killed 43-year-old david mcnabb friday night. the

victims include his 34- year-old sister, his 64- year-old mother, and a 63-year-old year old man.. officials say the victims were stabbed and beaten to death by the suspect, who also lived at the home. a 9-1-1 call brought police to the house. they found mcnabb barricaded inside with a rifle. it ended with police shooting the suspect. he was pronounced dead at a hospital. ( marty ) the motive of the shooting is still under investigation. ( marty ) the federal government is requiring the california d-m-v to implement even stricter standards when it comes to the new 'real i-d". because of that, people who already waited in line to get the new i-d card are wondering what it means

for them. kron 4's capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala has more from sacramento. if you stood in line at the dmv this year for a real i.d.... don't worry---you don't need to go back anytime soon.. starting in april - the federal government will require real i.d. applicants to provide two proofs of address at the dmv.that policy is stricter than what had been in been place previously. ((jaime garza - dmv spokesman)) "what we've been doing is asking applicants to provide one proof of residency document when they came into the office, and the second proof would be satisfied when the real id driver license or card is delivered by mail to the applicant and return service is requested." beginning in october 2020 the new real id will be the only state identification accepted at airports and federal buildings.with the dmv already in the spotlight for long wait times and technology problems -- that's a concern for assemblymember jim patterson ((assm. jim patterson r- fresno)) "the bigger problem going forward is millions of californians are now going to rush the line for the real id between now and 2020 and my concern is the dmv is utterly unprepared for that large rush."

fire destroyed two apartments in san rafael. two families lost everything, including they're just opened christmas gifts. kron four's philippe djegal reports some of the first responders who helped put the fire out -- returned with a special

delivery. (philippe) a few blocks away from these burned down apartments in san rafael's canal neighborhood... a timely -- generous surprise for at least four families who, up until this week, called the camelot apartments their home.dan hanlon/santa cop- "two families upstairs got completely burned out, everybody on the bottom suffered significant smoke and water damage." with spirts down -- first responders again coming to the rescue. this time showering fire victims with gifts and not water to put out flames.dan hanlon/santa cop- "we had a little guy literally jumping for joy down there." outside of san rafael fire station 54 saturday morning... fire fighters and police officers who make up the san rafael santa cop program passed out toys to the children who lost everything in wednesday morning's fire. retired police officer dan hanlon founded the toy drive back in 2000. typically, it collects gifts for underprivleged kids to be distributed during the winter holiday season.dan hanlon/santa cop- "all four

families involved with the burn, that lost everything, that benefited today through the program, were not part of our program for this christmas as far a receiving anything. so, it feels really good being able to bring some kind of closure to a dramatic experience the kids went through." in november, hanlon says the community stepped up with increased donations after learning the program had only received about half of the donations it typically gets heading into christmas. fortunately, there were enough toys to go around to help these families too.dan hanlon/santa cop- "this year, we had 75 collection barrels out throughout the central marin area." a mother did sustain second degree burns on both her arms while saving her kids from the fire. but everyone survived. investigators say it's possible an unattended barbeque on the front deck across from one of the burned apartments caused the fire. in san rafael, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( marty ) officers in farifield are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital saturday night. it happened just before 9 in the parking lot of a restaurant on oliver road. the victim says two men pulled out a gun and then demanded his property. a struggle begans and the gun went off....hitting the victim. the suspects drove off in a black nissan fairfield police are asking you to give them a call if you know anything about the attack.. ( marty ) palo alto police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman. the suspect ran off when the victim's boyfriend stopped the attack. kron 4's gayle ong spoke to the victim's friend and has more on the search for the suspect. palo alto detectives are looking for this man - who they say sexually assaulted a woman.it happened around 330 in the morning saturday on el camino real.authorities say a woman had been unloading items out of her vehicle to give to a friend,as she was walking

back to meet her friend in the apartment complex,she felt someone grab her.the victim's friend katia shukh was waiting for her back in the apartment, shukh says the suspect followed her friend from grant avenue, which is a short dista nce from the apartment.a police report was filed immediately following the assault.multiple surveillance cameras captured the suspect.

( marty )a four day manhunt for an inmate who escaped from san quentin prison and carjacked a bay area woman-- is now over.. police captured him 200 miles away... eating lunch at a taco bell. kron 4s dan thorn has the story. wanted for escaping from prison and carjacking a woman.. 21-year-old shalom mendoza is captured by police saturday afternoon. authorities got help from someone who spotted him eating at a taco bell in paso robles..sot: crystal vernoy says she was sitting in a booth behind mendoza. from watching the news she easily spotted him and knew who he was...sot: the tattoo right

above his eyebrow right here. it had a distinguished like money symbol on it and i just recognized it. crystal wasn't alone in recognizing mendoza..someone at the restaurant quietly called police...sot: then the gang task force guy walked in to the taco bell exactly where the guy was and told him he needed to stop doing what he was doing and put his hands up.. vernoy says he gave police a fake name at first..but was then taken away handcuffs..police say on wednesday mendoza escaped from san quentin state prison in san rafael. he was working outside of the prison walls when authorities say he took his opportunity to run. shortly after fleeing--mendoza is accused of carjacking a woman in a home depot parking lot.the theft was caught on surveillance video..police say mendoza threatened to kill the woman if she didn't hand over the keys.. on friday he was spotted at a dollar store in san miguel and the stolen toyota rav 4 was found abandoned along the 101 freeway. investigators believe mendoza was heading to the los angeles area...police finally got their man around 12:30 saturday afternoon..and

witnesses were relieved.. ( marty ) ... mendoza is facing felony charges of carjacking and escape. this morning he's being held at salinas valley state prison. ( marty ) the man police say is responsible for a triple homicide in santa barbara county is dead following a stand-off. deputies in orcutt shot and killed 43-year-old david mcnabb friday night. the victims include his 34- year-old sister, his 64- year-old mother, and a 63-year-old year old man.. officials say the victims were stabbed and beaten to death by the suspect, who also lived at the home. a 9-1-1 call brought police to the house. they found mcnabb barricaded inside with a rifle. it ended with police shooting the suspect. he was pronounced dead at a

in our little neighborhood here we hate to hear of it, and you hate to have that kind of thing happen to a family especially around the holidays.">( marty ) the motive of the shooting is still under investigation. ( marty ) the federal government is requiring the california d-m-v to implement even stricter standards when it comes to the new 'real i-d". because of that, people who already waited in line to get the new i-d card are wondering what it means for them. kron 4's capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala has more from sacramento. if you stood in line at the dmv this year for a real i.d.... don't worry---you don't need to go back anytime soon.. starting in april - the federal government will require real i.d. applicants to provide two proofs of address at the dmv.that policy is stricter than what had been in been place previously. ((jaime garza - dmv spokesman)) "what we've been doing is asking applicants to provide one proof of residency document when they came into the office, and the second proof would be satisfied when the real id driver license or card is delivered by mail to the applicant and return service is requested."

( marty )the day after christmas... a fire destroyed two apartments in san rafael. two families lost everything, including they're just opened christmas gifts. kron four's philippe djegal reports some of the first responders who helped put the fire out -- returned with a special delivery. (philippe) a few blocks away from these burned down apartments in san rafael's canal neighborhood... a timely -- generous surprise for at least four families who, up until this week, called the camelot apartments their home.dan hanlon/santa cop- "two families upstairs got completely burned out, everybody on the bottom suffered significant smoke and water damage." with spirts down -- first responders again coming to the rescue. this time showering fire victims with gifts and not water to put out flames.dan hanlon/santa cop- "we had a little guy literally jumping

for joy down there." outside of san rafael fire station 54 saturday morning... fire fighters and police officers who make up the san rafael santa cop program passed out toys to the children who lost everything in wednesday morning's fire. retired police officer dan hanlon founded the toy drive back in 2000. typically, it collects gifts for underprivleged kids to be distributed during the winter holiday season.dan hanlon/santa cop- "all four families involved with the burn, that lost everything, that benefited today through the program, were not part of our program for this christmas as far a receiving anything. so, it feels really good being able to bring some kind of closure to a dramatic experience the kids went through." in november, hanlon says the community stepped up with increased donations after learning the program had only received about half of the donations it typically gets heading into christmas. fortunately, there were enough toys to go around to help these families too.dan hanlon/santa cop- "this year, we had 75 collection barrels out throughout the central marin area." a mother did sustain second degree burns on both her arms while saving her

taking advantage of our backyard is harder than it sounds. so many places so little time. so let's not waste any time.. and head to carmel-by-the-sea. this stretch of northern california coast is loaded with spots we should be getting outside and taking advantage of like carmel beach. at the foot of ocean avenue, the carmel-by- the-sea's main drag, it's an easy walk from pretty much everywhere. the city is a whopping one square mile in size, so you always feel close to the beach and its postcard worthy views. white sand, dog-friendly, surfers love it here, walkers are fans too. even on days when the weather isn't perfect, the scenery doesn't disappoint.

let's head into town.. lined with shops and town.. lined let's head into let's head into town.. lined with shops and restaurants, it would be easy to stick to ocean avenue, but carmel-by-the-sea has more than 40 courtyards and passageways. it's a labyrinth that fun to wander and discover. passageways and courtyards can boast shops, art galleries, wine tasting rooms, or simply blooming gardens. it's nice sometimes to not have a plan - if you want guidance, a local gal named gael (gail) gallagher runs a spirited walking tour.

if strolling is a little too slow for you, let's speed things up.. on an electric bike. biking is kind of new thing for carmel-by-the sea. there's only one bike shop in town.. mad dogs & englishman is just off ocean avenue. they don't run tours, they rent e-bikes, but they're happy to suggest where bikers should go. they also offer riders garmin gps navigation systems with preloaded routes and step by step directions. but truthfully, sometimes getting lost is the fun part.

carmel-by-the-sea is one of those places that you can park your car when you arrive and forget about.. for most of the time. you'll need it to get to point lobos state natural reserve. just three miles south, it's often referred to as the crown jewel of the california state park system. if you've only got an hour, that's okay. it's worth stopping. if you've got the day - lucky you. there are long hikes, short hikes, guided walks. marine life is plentiful. you can see otters, sea lions, pelicans.. the list goes on and on.

wear high heels. (anything more than two inches in height or with a base of less than one square inch.) local police ignore the odd law that dates back to 1963. (the intention at the time was to defend the city from lawsuits stemming from irregular pavements distorted by tree roots.) but city hall still issues high-heel permits. there's no charge, you just have to stop by, and sign some paperwork. it's a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
