>> first, there is a lot to unpack with today's oscar news. the big stunners and the nominations bradley cooper didn't get. >> mr. cooper. >> bradley cooper's snub in the best director category is the biggest surprise, especially considering the movie got a total of eight oscar noms, including lady gaga for best actress. he was upbeat this morning thanking the academy in writing, i just am so grateful. >> i had no idea it was going to happen. i just knew hi to try. >> and a double snub for emily blunt. the actress was shut out in two categories, supporting actress for "a quiet place," and best actress for "mary poppins returns." "black panther" is the first superhero movie to get nominated, but surprisingly none of the actors were nominated. let's get the story behind the

snubs. i'm joined by our correspondents. all right. first of all, i got to say. michael b. jordan might have been the best villain in superhero history. he gets no love during awards season. >> agreed. he owns that movie. he had so much charisma. he stole that movie in my opinion. >> he was a better as a villain than he was as a hero. >> this is for my father. >> okay. now let's go to bradley cooper. five months ago, he was going to win every award and now he doesn't get a nomination. >> here's why. you just said it just now. he was a front runner. you cannot be a front runner for five months. this is a marathon, not a sprint. >> this is also voted on by directors, this category and they tend to sometimes not like first-time directors, especially actors. you think about ben affleck that was snubbed for "argo," and then it got best picture. >> there was only one movie that brought a tear to my eye and that's the mr. rogers

other movie i have seen. pillows, chocolate. >> they hired the publicist who led the charge for both "la la land" and "moonlight" two years ago. she is now part of netflix and boy, was that a gamble that paid off big time. >> okay. let's move on to best actress in a leading role. this is a hotly contested category. these would all be first-time winners by the way. you have lady gaga in "a star is born," glenn close in "the wife," olivia coleman and melissa mccarthy in her role, of "can you ever forgive me?." who is going to win? >> this is easy. glenn close. this is her seventh nomination and she has never won. this isn't just an award for the movie "the wife." this is an award for her career and i'm telling you right now. there is no that lady gaga with going to win over glenn close. >> it's not nearly as close and over as you think that it is. >> it's over. >> i think she has a shot. >> i want you guys to listen to
