>> and what she thinks of her teenage son's rapping career. ♪ you better appreciate the greatness ♪ >> this is "entertainment tonight." welcome, everybody. well, our top story tonight is almost too disturbing for words. early this morning, "empire" star jussie smollett was viciously attacked. the victim of a suspected hate crime. jussie survived, but what police say happened to him was truly horrific. >> can you head over and check on a report regarding a friend that was assaulted and battered. he is supposed to be well known. a noose was placed over the friend's neck. >> the 35-year-old actor was brutally attacked in downtown chicago, not far from where jussie stays when "empire" shoots there. we're told two men yelled racial and homophobic slurs and repeatedly hit him. we're also told they poured a substance on him that was bleach. one man put a rope around jussie's neck.

the men fled the scene and he fled to a nearby hospital. he was released early this morning. of his condition, we're told, quote, jussie is mostly physically okay, with some scrapes and bruises, but he is emotionally shook up. we're told surveillance video of the area was found. jussie flew in from new york to chicago just yesterday, illustrating his frustration of the delayed flight. ♪ i just want you to look at me ♪ >> he was scheduled to perform saturday, but it's unclear if he will be well enough to take the stage. >> "empire" has begun to involve. >> kevin was onset with him. the actor came out as gay a few months after the premiere, and his character, jamal, who is also gay, just got engaged. >> there is nothing frivolous about this story line. it's a healthy relationship between two men, two black men. >> it's taken me time to come to
