virginia to resign. following the the discovery of a racist yearbook photo that includes the governor. the photo is in his 19-84 medical school yearbook. it shows one person in blackface --- another wearing k-k-k robes. governor ralph northam confirms he's in the photo --- but has not said which one. northam has apologized, calling it - quote - "clearly racist and offensive." but he says he does not intend to step down. crews will be reinforcing the girders on the bus deck above first street. that will force a full one block closure of first street between howard and mission from 5-a-m today through 8-p-m tomorrow. then, next month...steel plates will be delivered to the center for installation. ( marty ) the transit center was open only for one month before it abruptly closed due to cracks found in steel beams on the bus deck. an official reopening date has not been set. ( marty ) the city of san francisco held a kick-off celebrating black history month at city hall. the theme of this year's history month is "black migration: moving forward." san francisco mayor london breed and community activist lateefah simon were among the speakers. mayor breed, san francisco's first black áwoman to serve as mayor, said this is an opportunity to educate children on the rich cultural history of the black community. marty ) the city has a variety of activities and events planned in the weeks to come. next week, the san francisco african american historical and cultural society will premiere a new black migrations short film. the society is also sponsoring a pop-up library that will visit schools through out ( marty ) in this morning's hidden history, we're learning more about africans who were brought to america on one of the last two slave ships. even though they are long gone, the slaves have had an impact on the world of art. reporter dee griffin shares their story. now calm and serene.. the savannah river was once a bustling, active route for importing and exporting goods in the river region.but it's proud past includes a perilous period that changed lives and later influenced a segment of art culture. the slave trade had been abolished in 1807 and really took effect in 1808. but, this was 50 years later in december 1858. about 400 slaves were brought to georgia on a schooner called "the wanderer."small boats were hired to take slaves up the savannah river. 200 were taken through the dark, murky water of horseshoe creek and into edgefield county, south carolina.there are newspaper accounts talking about how intelligent they were, how quickly they learned when they came here and started working on different plantations. they were skilled laborers. (áávoáá)although ripped from their country with an uncertain future .. the slaves would not let go of a piece of their past through the art of face jugs. (áásotáá) they're very rudimentary. they're very crude. they're very small. it's believed that they practiced the voodoo religion. so, they believed that they could talk to ancestors through the face vessels. (áávoáá)the jugs are small in stature.. typically 3 to 8 inches tall.. but they were large in meaning and the symbolism of home.since the ending of slavery.. potters have recreated face jugs crafted after old ones that are scarsely found around the country.while no one can put a true price on the service of

slaves.. collectors are paying high dollar to get a piece of their work. they do fetch a large price. at auction they could go for anywhere 12 to 25-thousand dollars. (áávoáá) minister fred morton is the descendent of a slave brought over on the wanderer.he was stolen using a red piece of cloth which was a payment in africa. in africa you worked for cloth and you bartered and traded with it. so, they waved a piece of cloth which was almost sort of like an ad "come work." (áávoáá)after arriving in edgefield.. his name was changed to thomas lanham.death stole his body.. but minister morton uses this cane to keep thomas lanham's memory alive. i went to the place where the wanderer landed and there was a piece of drift wood that was cedar. i brought it and fashioned this.(áávoáá)though traditionally used to assist in walking.. the cane helps bring stability and accuracy to the memory of those who were knocked off their foundation by slavery. i put the date 1858 that the i put

(dave)a powerful cold front is approaching the coast and will bring damaging winds and heavy rainfall as it passes through the bay area and central coast early this morning. after a brief lull midday, showers and thunderstorms, along with gusty winds, will redevelop across the region late this afternoon and evening. showers will linger on sunday but with dry breaks. another front will bring more showers sunday night into monday. a final cold system will produce more shower activity monday night into tuesday and could lower snow levels to less than 2000 feet. some showers could linger into wednesday, but then dry weather is forecast wednesday through friday.

released body cam footage of a deadly officer-involved shooting last november. the video show the last moments of 29-year-old agustin gonzalez. he was shot 13 times by two hayward officers. hayward police chief says mark koller says it started when officers responded to a call of two men fighting. police say they thought they saw gonsalez with a knife --- and he refused to follow their orders and began walking toward them. that's when the officers opened fire. chief koller says what they thought was a knife --- was actually a razor blade. a blade gonsalez's family says he carried with him often -- a tool he used for work as an employee at tesla.

whether this was a, the shooting was lawful, or whether the shooting was in policy. those, the facts of why this happened are all under investigation right now, and there's many questions that remain unanswered.">( marty ) chief koller says he is releasing the video now -- in an effort to be transparent. the gonsalez family intends to file a civil lawsuit against the officers- involved and the city of hayward... claiming unreasonable use of force. the officers who opened fire are back on regular patrol. ( marty ) the oakland teachers union is set to decide on monday whether teachers will walk off the job. teachers have been voting since last tuesday on whether to strike. tensions have been high in the district---because as many as 24 schools are in jeopardy of closing. the school board already voted to close oakland's roots international academy. some community members are donating money to help teachers financially should union leaders call a strike. ( marty ) work will continue today on the brand new transbay transit center.

it will remain closed until at least june of this year. crews will be reinforcing the girders on the bus deck above first street. that will force a full one block closure of first street between howard and mission from 5-a-m today through 8-p-m tomorrow. then, next month...steel plates will be delivered to the center for installation. ( marty ) ( marty ) the transit center was open only for one month before it abruptly closed due to cracks found in steel beams on the bus deck. an official reopening date has not been set. ( marty ) a navy veteran is facing deportation back to mexico. joaquin sotelo has been in the u-s since he was 10-years-old. he got a green card and enlisted in

the navy at the age of 19. but after returning from his service overseas he fell into drug addiction... and ended up serving time in prison. sotelo was detained in a feneral immigration facility for an additonal two years. he believ a paperwork issue is to blame. ( marty ) on thursday, community activists marched to senator dianne feinstenin's office in downtown fresno to show support and to ask for help in sotel's case. he has to report to ice on february ( marty ) a sacramento homeowner wants a delivery service to pay for his damaged fence after a delivery man was caught on camera breaking the fence gate. reporter charmaine nero caught up with the homeowner.. who says he's shocked. this home to deliver an amazon package - "you see the driver walking up through the slots in the fence, it doesn't look like he tried to unlock the gate or open it."deryk - who doesn't want to be identified - remembers seeing the broken fence - before checking out the footage. "all of sudden you can see a hand in the area and it's almost like he dropped kicked the gate open." pictures show the damage left behind. "the whole panel was broken off, the lick on the gate was bent."deryck says he called amazon customer service who told him they will reimburse him for the damage. the cost - he says is more than $200 to fix. "it will take a week to get an estimate and sometimes 2 weeks to get a repair person, so i took it upon myself to fix it."while deryk - who has spent several years as a delivery driver says the damage is done. he wants delivery companies to pay more attention to drivers so this (show kicking in gate) doesnt happen again. reporting. a spokesperson with amazon says the actions seen on the video do not reflect the company or what they expect from third party delivery services. they say they're working with the homeowner to make things right. ( marty ) it was supposed to be a trip to paradise, instead it was the flight from hell. .a plane headed to hawaii was forced to return to los angeles international airport three times. hawaiian airlines says it was called because of separate and unrelated faults with different systems. the flight was finally canceled after the third return to the airport. 207 passengers were on board...they were refunded for the flight and given a one-hundred dollar credit for a future flight. ( marty ) and in fairfield, a large military transport plane... landed with its nose wheels up at travis air force base. the c-5-m super galaxy aircraft was returning to travis thursday night with
