women's history month... we recognize a woman who helped break barriers in journalism. dorothy gilliam was the first african american female reporter at the washington post. her stories helped give a voice to communities that were often overlooked. brie jackson has the story. she's a journalism pioneer.... "as a first i had to open the doors for some others who would be following."in 1961 dorothy butler gilliam became the first black female reporter for the washington post. at the time the paper was male dominated and-- like the nation as a whole--mostly segregated.gilliam recalled facing unexpected challenges while trying to do her job." because of these outside factors that i had no control over such as the fact that these white cab drivers wouldn't pick up a black woman" despite obstacles, gilliam was driven to succeed.she relied on her skills.. such as short- hand.. to finish assignments on-time.she believed missing

( marty ) as we celebrate women's history month... we recognize a woman who helped break barriers in journalism. dorothy gilliam was the first african american female reporter at the washington post. her stories helped give a voice to communities that were often overlooked. brie jackson has the story. she's a journalism pioneer.... "as a first i had to open the doors for some others who would be following."in 1961 dorothy butler gilliam became the first black female reporter for the washington post. at the time the paper was male dominated and-- like the nation as a whole--mostly segregated.gilliam recalled facing unexpected challenges while trying to do her job." because of these outside factors that i had no control over such as the fact that these white cab drivers

wouldn't pick up a black woman" despite obstacles, gilliam was driven to succeed.she relied on her skills.. such as short- hand.. to finish assignments on-time.she believed missing deadline would only make it harder for any women or minorities who followed. ( marty ) breaking overnight...a man is dead following a shooting in antioch. it happened last night just after 9 at near the intersection of west 19th and d streets.thats where police say they found two men with gunshot wounds in the middle of the street. a 20-year- old man died at the hospital..while a 25-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries. police have not arrested a suspect. ( marty ) there are no survivors in an ethiopian airlines flight that crashed early this morning. the

airline says 157 passengers --- including 8 americans --- and eight crew members were on board the plane when it went down. search and rescue operations are underway this morning. this is the second new boeing 7-37 that has gone down in the last 6 months. but there is no word on a cause for the crash at this point. ( marty ) there's concern in half moon bay after a chunk of conrete broke away from the bluff at the pedestrian bridge. you may remember that a big section of the bluff gave way back in 20-16. since then the city has been keeping an eye on it, kron 4's gayle ong reports that some fear the recent storms could cause further erosion. metal barricades and sandbags are still set up to protect mirada road,from exposure to high tides and storm events.. the bluff at the pedestrian bridge eroded back in 20-16.. long time resident john

brennan says after recent winter storms,it's been eroding away..san mateo county workers put these boulders on the beach to break the surf..but with the rounds of storms over the years, high energy waves and coastal conditions have caused the boulders to shift..leaving areas along mirada road unprotected..carol is also seeing eroding issues on moss beach..near the fitzgerald marine reserve she's hoping she could install a seawall in her backward where the damage is,but the process is not simple.half moon bay is considered an "erosion hot spot"city and county planners are aware and still evaluating long term solutions to

( marty ) new this morning.....poli ce in oakland say a security guard was shot 10 times last night. it happened inside a pot cultivating house on the 12-hundred block of 23rd avenue. the shooting happened around 9. the guard was taken to a hospital with major injuries. no word on his condition this morning. police have not arrested any suspects. ( marty ) bart service is back to normal this morning following a big problem yesterday. the system was completely shutdown for around three hours yesterday morning because of a computer glitch. service was partially restored around 9... and full service was up and running an hour later. bart has reported no other issues since then. happening today...the kick off of the sunday streets season in san francisco. the event transforms streets to car-free spaces for kids.

( marty ) ( marty )( marty ) as we celebrate women's history month... we recognize a woman who helped break barriers in journalism. dorothy gilliam was the first african american female reporter at the washington post. her

stories helped give a voice to communities that were often overlooked. brie jackson has the story. she's a journalism pioneer.... "as a first i had to open the doors for some others who would be following."in 1961 dorothy butler gilliam became the first black female reporter for the washington post. at the time the paper was male dominated and-- like the nation as a whole--mostly segregated.gilliam recalled facing unexpected challenges while trying to do her job." because of these outside factors that i had no control over such as the fact that these white cab drivers wouldn't pick up a black woman" despite obstacles, gilliam was driven to succeed.she relied on her skills.. such as short- hand.. to finish assignments on-time.she believed on-time. she believed on-time.she believed missing she believed missing deadline would only make it harder for any women or minorities who followed. "it would be very easy for editors who didn't want to have diversity to say

"we tried but they couldn't even get cabs". as the 1960's civil rights movement and women's movement made headlines, gilliam's articles were required reading.... she covered historic events including the integration of central high school in little rock arkansas and the university of mississippi."few white reporters at that time were going into the black community to say what do you all think what are your opinions of whats happening at ole miss"in her memoir called " trailblazer", gilliam wrote of her experiences including her efforts to promote diversity in the newsroom." the way journalism works. its important that we have all people represented around the table"in addition to her work in journalism, gilliam also co- founded the maynard institute in washington d.c.the works to

improve media coverage by making sure newsrooms reflect the communities they serve . dorothy gilliam is a legend in the industry.cathy trost is the executive director of the newseum's freedom forum institute.she says while gilliam and other women broke barriers decades ago, there's still room for progress.its been clear that we need more women and diversity in leadership. because tone gets set at the top and decisions get made at the top about the expectations you are communicating about your values in the newsroom. trost says the newseum programs and exhibits highlight the rise of female journalists and their vital role in the media.she's hopes increasing awareness of the history, the struggles and the accomplishments will lead to more positive changes. we've been hearing that message for 30, 40 years even before dorothy gilliam and it's time now to standup and make a changegilliam says being the first wasn't easy. but after nearly 60 years in the news business, she says she is proud to see more females and journalists of color taking on tough assignments...from the city hall....to the white house press room.... ( marty ) dozens of people remembered the lives of three women who were killed a year ago at the veterans home in yountville. kron four's philippe djegal reports the pain from that deadly day has not gone away. kerri dorman/vice mayor- "on march 9, 2018, hope and redemption and charity and love did not leave this valley." though the town

of yountville is still recovering from the deadly events of march 9th a year ago... rather than dwell on the loss of life... the community honoring the three women who died and their contributions to so many people.kerri dorman/vice mayor- "i'm here because i believe, that the memories we bring, are the seeds and the sprouts, that give us the roots to follow our commitment to the mission, the shared mission of not only those, whose lives were taken, but those who survived." saturday's memorial was held in the town community center. the pathway home at the veteran's home of california in yountville shutdown last summer...larry kamer/pathway home- "it's been a hard year. it's been a year of figuring out the path of the pathway home." returning to the pathway home was too much to bare for employees and former residents there, says spokesperson larry kamer.

losing doctor jennifer gonzales shushereba... doctor jennifer golick... and, executive director chrstine loeber (chris-teen low-burr) -- closed a chapter at that facility that yountville won't soon forget. larry kamer/pathway home- "they had dedicated their lives to helping vets who were dealing with traumatic brain injury, mental health, physical health, ad other issues. you know, we ask a lot of our warriors, and we send them to some very very difficult situations, and we just need to do a better job of getting them out of the military and into society as we do in preparing them to come into the military. and, that's what those three women were dedicated to doing." the gunman killed himself after shooting the women. he was a veteran who had recently been treated and released from the home. in yountville, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( marty ) it was a weekend of vigils and memorials in sacramento honoring the life of stephon clark. they come just days after the d-a announced no charges will be filed against the officers who fatally shot the unarmed man. bridgette bjorlo has the story.
