>>local news station. >>good morning, everybody, i'm marty gonzales at breaking news that we're following this morning a second major earthquake striking southern california. in as many days, hundreds of aftershocks have rattled the area since the 7.1 quake hit just after 8 o'clock last night in the mojave desert near the community of ridgecrest let's take a look at some video now the moment of the quake struck in the area there were widespread power outages. the quake also caused several injuries. fires and also buckled some roads in the area. fortunately there have been no fatalities reported. now this latest quake was more powerful than the 6.4 magnitude earthquake
7:01 am
that hit back on the 4th of july. usgs says that this will likely become a billion-dollar disaster we had show you the map here with the earthquake and the aftershocks. if you had over the last 48 hours. now governor gavin, newsome has declared a state of emergency he's asking for federal aid as well camila bernal has the latest. >>we're actually feeling an aftershock right now that 7.1 earthquake about 11 miles from where we're standing in so many aftershocks ever sense to you could see everything shaking and i just want to describe a little bit what we cells during that 7.1 shake the ground underneath you just absolutely moves things going from side to side. so she didn't know where to go and it is hard to describe what you feel during those seconds of their seconds it feel very long seconds that i went and looked outside the window and saw everything shaking. there
7:02 am
was a pool outside in that pool is full of waste water just coming out all of us and going outside after that way because of course everybody asking everybody trying to figure out exactly what's going on and everybody checking on each other. did speak to some of the residents in this area lived here their entire lives here in ridgecrest and they were telling me that the first thing that they did was their loved ones i spoke to a mother who says she grabbed onto her baby and that is the only thing that she could do during those second that the ground was shaking, they said that this one was a lot stronger a lot longer than what they felt on july 4th and that 6.4 wake. authorities now saying that the 7.1 is the actual earthquake there saying that that july 4th 6.4 is now 8 for shocked. billy has held a number of aftershocks versus like i said the ground continues to shake even as we speak now, authorities have responded very quickly, i saw
7:03 am
the police like the sirens immediately after we felt that 7.1 shake. we know that the team out put out fires that we believe were caused by gas leaks. right after the quake. so authorities have been on the responding to medical emergencies and to the fires we also know that there is a search and rescue team in place in case things get worse and they will assess the damage as the sun comes out reporting in ridgecrest california. i'm camila bernal. >>thanks a lot for that report, let's go ahead and talk about the weather this morning we have much more coverage on the coming up, but we want to get you caught up on the forecast for the weekend. as far as here for that i have some really a decent news to report with all of we do see a cool down coming our in the next couple days will be nice. >>we're negotiating through some fog now this morning. it's a pretty good coverage or around the perimeter of the base you can see the shot coming in from berkeley as we take a look if the east bay shoreline here but swing things around the golden gate, it looks like the fog is actually lifted the top of the

towers there. so we just need this to mix out until we go to kind of mostly sunny is we're going to go with basically by the afternoon but those temperatures will be fairly controlled we'll still see some 90's pop in the far inland reaches however tomorrow little bit of a cool down coming will be covering that for you how about that fog lifting, here's the problem though along the coast places like half moon bay is going to be problematic pretty good coverage up here in the north bay though think appoint rail clear out nicely and also to for stinson beach but this again will be a problem area around half moon bay with the fog or overcast kind of lingering a bit. temperatures right now in the upper 50's around the perimeter of the bay lower 50's up to the north 64 for antioch 60 coming in for concord 56 meanwhile for tri valley livermore and here's a comparison from where we were 24 hours ago were trailing a couple degrees compliments of the the were mild and some other spot you can see off to the far east bay. this is what it looks like and so no we're seeing the skies already open up here maybe a few scattered clouds in the afternoon high temperatures are racing through the 80's inland. again
7:05 am
we're going to see a couple 90's popping out there back to the bay, this is what it looks like it's 66 for the high san francisco oakland, 73. and san jose at 82 coming up in a bit we'll take a look at the longer range forecast for you marty. thanks a lot want to get back to earth cake worth quake coverage, this morning. seismologists are warning both recent major quakes near ridgecrest are part of what they call a very energetic system. >>and they say that more tremors are likely. so many of us are wondering what the southern california quakes mean for us here in the bay area kron four's christine tape cho has that part of our story. >>good morning. i'm reporting live here from u c berkeley where kron four's talk to a seismologist to go ahead and explain a little bit to us. do have some uh you know information share in regards to the fact that the seismologist says that we should definitely expect more quakes and those possibly could impact us here in the greater bay area and we have some just to kind of refresh
7:06 am
from you of what happened the past 2 days is just a second quake in 2 days and now there are thousands without power and without water and there are many people waking up out tonight throughout the state of california because they were too afraid to sleep in sight. now the 7.1 magnitude quake was 11 times stronger than the earlier 6.4. this is even stronger than 89 loma prieta quake in san francisco. the berkeley seismologist says this is an active quake. sequins but not abnormal it's likely to trigger something up here. >>it is called the most part one think it's just a matter of a week another big her, however it did they think of a fire so that i would it likely that that is they're like no political ticker like. >>we'd really like to stress that just a you know this quake, the debt will in time
7:07 am
skews me excuse me. this quake will increase the odds of other quakes happening and again like she had mentioned right up here in the bay area and really she mentioned there's no way you can an earthquake when it's going to happen or where it's going to happen so readiness is going to be very very important and you know if you're on social media. throughout the past few days. you've seen not basically the aftershock and the scare that this has brought throughout the entire communities to go ahead and keep in mind have ready bags and to go ahead and read up on earthquake safety simien to raise etcetera to make sure that you're prepared if one does hit up here in the bay area. reporting live from u c berkeley ca teatro. >>and chris you know we have a lot of that information on our website at kron 4 dot com. california senator dianne feinstein released a statement following the second major quake it reads in part quote the potential for danger cannot be underestimated. >>residents of southern california must be prepared in case there are further more
7:08 am
dangerous quakes the statement continues say my office is in close contact with fema to determine whether there are any injuries and the extent of damage as well as what the role the federal government can play in responding. my staff is ready to mobilize to ensure that support quickly reaches those californians who need it. and our coverage of this latest earthquake in southern california continues on kron 4 dot com as we mentioned you'll find the very latest on the aftermath, including video of crews were battling fires in the area also a look at the damage. this morning on kron 4 news weekend, the rush to get emergency kids following the recent earthquakes in southern california will take a look at that. >>plus a murder investigation underway in the east bay after a man collapsed and died in front a bowling alley. ♪
