>> what's exactly what's going on here? >> this is a pop-up recreation of the peach pit from '90s. >> we have waited nearly 20 years for tonight, the return of "90210" on fox. that sounds so good to my earrings. can you get us ready for all of this? ♪ >> oh, yeah, the iconic music. the classic group shot. it's all back. but this isn't exactly the "90210" you remember. >> the show is going to be everything that you want it to be and not what you expect it to be. >> it's quite a confusing concept to grasp at first, i understand. >> the idea of this show is that we're taking people behind the scenes a little bit. >> okay, so, think of it as a mockumentary -- with the o.g. cast kind of playing themselves.

jason's a director, tori's a broke reality tv star, and jennie's unlucky in love. >> so we are playing characters that have our names, our real names. >> jennie is a woman, in, you know, her mid-40s, and she's struggling with relationships. >> tori, you wrote in your book about being broke, about having children, will we get a little of that? >> yes, of course. here's the thing -- when we all came together we were like, we either have to go big or go home. >> in real life, brian's married to actress megan fox. in "bh90210," he's married to a singer, played by la la anthony. >> it's like, huge megastar married to brian who's the stay-at-home dad but he's also trying to get his career back up and running. >> also in real life, gabrielle is president of the screen actors guild. >> will that play into this at all? will we see any of that? >> i think you'll see a little bit of it, but -- >> we'll see. >> yes, well, you know, since there is that degree of who we are today. >> you pulled the curtain back

on lots of things, i mean, especially the relationship with shannen and how you haven't spoken and how maybe there was some issues. >> well, everything they write, we're just like, okay, let's make it a part of the story line. this is what people think of us, so let's kind of go full force into that. >> vanessa lachey joins the cast as jason's wife. >> this is like every girl's dream in my era. >> okay, but you and jason, things might not be all so rosy, right? >> are you giving spoilers? >> what can we expect -- do we get some really yummy easter eggs? >> we drop them like they're no tomorrow. little, tiny, yummy bombs in every episode. >> i want to exchange an egg. >> i'd like to exchange this egg. >> you want to exchange an egg? >> and there'll be plenty of throwbacks to the original show. so, how'd the most epic reunion ever even happen? >> we sent some texts. we came up with an idea and we

took it in and worked it out and we got the group on board and the rest is -- i don't know -- fate. >> there is a phenomenal "90210" cast chat. >> we should do this for real, what do you say? >> jennie and tori spent over a year working on the concept for this nontraditional reboot. >> can we be adults about this? >> all for one very simple reason -- >> jennie and i wanted to work together. we've been best friends ever since the show, so we've been best friends for 30 years. we just want to continue to work together, we want our kids to be able to come to set. >> but not everyone was on board from the get-go. shannen doherty, who left the show after four seasons, swore she'd never play brenda walsh again. after losing good friend and castmate luke perry in march, shannen had a change of heart. >> i felt like it was an important time for all of us to come together to honor him. it wasn't long after he passed that i finally was like, okay, yes. >> she completes the group of girls and the energy that we all have with each other and she's brenda.

i mean, you've got to have brenda. >> what do you want? >> you. >> it's just like the perfect timing. now the '90s are back in, everyone's watching. yeah, my kids are like, oh, my gosh, you were on a tv show? like, you were famous? >> it's so crazy. your little kids -- >> they're seeing ads all over the place. >> here's what i do know, an entirely new fan base is going to discover 90210 tonight. are you ready for the fand moan yum to get back in your life. it was hysteria the first time around. >> well, here's what we know "90210" was an absolute pop culture game-changer. >> i went to the mall to make an appearance. we didn't figure that we would get a turnout of 5,000 people.

i had no idea that, you know, we'd require a s.w.a.t. team. >> i started getting grabbed, my clothes started to get grabbed and pulled and that's kind of scary. >> they were hounded, they were like the beatles. i remember being in a shopping mall on an escalator and someone was screaming, donna, like that was the first time i realized people know who we are. >> luke perry and i did an appearance at fresno, california, at the zoo. we were literally scrunched to crunched to death and had to be taken out through the parrot cage. >> i was just in spain and i found out we're very big there also. it's incredible. got off the plane and there were about 5,000 people there waiting to see me. i was like, ah, i'm not luke perry! i'm not luke perry! >> at the height of its success the teen drama drew in over 21 million viewers a week. it generated billions of dollars in merchandising revenue.

>> i used to play with little dolls and now i have one named after this character, kelly. it's pretty frightening, actually. >> all that without the help of social media. while shannen had already found fame in the cult classic "heath "heathers,," jason was sharing an apartment with an up-and-coming actor named brad pitt and luke was working a construction job just before he was cast. >> man, i was unemployed for 18 months working in a fish store. i just wanted to know at that time when i auditioned, how am i going to make my rent payment? >> "e.t." was on set when the show debuted in 1990, and even though it wasn't an immediate hit, this cast knew it was only a matter of time. >> i think that the show can really skyrocket and give the audience something else to look at besides the same old thing that they're watching every thursday night. >> dylan, what if i'm pregnant? >> the tipping point, i think, was when brenda lost her virginity. everyone was so shellshocked and we went into summer episodes that was also new, original

content, while everyone else was on hiatus, gave people something to watch. the fact that we were bringing content that had glitz and glamour and kids having fun, it was just very watchable. it just made the show skyrocket. >> don't you just wish we could rewind the last three years? >> by the time the show made its final bow in 2000, it had a legion of diehard fans for life and rumblings of a reboot even then. >> if they do do one, they can't wait until we're all like 50 that's not fair. >> spring is in the air. >> of course the show is going to be remembered for mostly my hair, i think. >> we were dealing with major issues that young people were going through and our show sort of gave them a voice and was there for them. and in its ten years on the air, a whole lot of now-famous guest stars popped up. >> what would your future husband say most attracted him to you? >> my mind. >> it was the show that i watched as a kid growing up that made me want to move to l.a.

welcome back. we're inside the peach pit here in hollywood. i know you shot the show in vancouver. >> in vancouver, not necessarily known for palm trees. >> you got a big truckload of palm trees. do you happen to know the zip code where you filmed? i love it. what we doe know we were so lucky you invited us to coming up to vancouver and take a look around. >> yeah, this is called the alston house. but it's kind of like a grownup peach pit. >> talk to me about this reboot. >> we need you. >> i know. >> tori went to great lengths to -- in helping to design and decorate this place because she's very, very passionate about it. a couple things we love -- we love the peach wallpaper, like, hidden peaches so that'll be a fun drinking game. there's a lot of peach cocktails

but none of them are real, though. >> so the upscale peach pit is owned by jason's character in the show, but diehard fans, don't panic -- the reboot isn't forgetting about its most iconic hangout. >> how crazy is it being in the peach pit right now? >> this place has been bumped up. >> it's a little bigger. >> we never had a front before. of the peach pit. >> there was always a stock shot, always stock footage. >> the vancouver set is a far cry from the original l.a. soundstage. where the show was produced, but it's like a real homecoming for this canadien native. >> we're shooting "90210" just down the street from your high school. >> yeah. it was a distillery actually >> a distillery? >> yeah, yeah. because i don't know if you know this, kevin, but canadiens like to drink. >> if that's the case they must have alcohol in the peach pit by now. come on, let's go in and have a drink. >> let's go find out.

you were the justin bieber of 1991, how does that make you feel? >> real good. >> listen, i really thought that was a cute reaction to that bieber comparison, because he really kind of was. >> jason first. >> yeah, jason came first. bieber is more like jason. >> exactly. listen, we are in a very special place here. we're in the booth that's dedicated to luke perry. i know you guys think about him often. not a day goes by that you don't think about him. and keep his memory alive. >> i'm sorry i just can't control myself. >> well, don't fight it. >> luke was such a quiet, subtle, yet dynamic human being. he had a very strong and lasting impact on people. >> you and i have been a lot of things to each other over the years, kelly. >> there are moments when it's easier than others.

you know, i still haven't, i still haven't -- >> you coming or going? >> a little of both. >> he was a beautiful, humble, gentle, kind, thoughtful soul. >> luke suffered a massive stroke on february 27th and passed away five days later. he was surrounded by his two children, his fiancee, his ex-wife and his mom. >> we miss him every day, there's a huge hole in our hearts with him gone. >> it's ironic the role that made him a star wasn almost not his. luke was originally supposed to audition to be steve sanders, but didn't feel he was the right fit for the part. on screen, the then-24-year-old was brooding and confident. off screen, he was actually kind

of shy. >> fame was never the goal. >> i'm in no hurry to have my name above a title or to be a star of a film. then when the time comes i feel a little bit more comfortable. next year. no, sometime. >> from the "90210" set to red carpets, we spent hundreds of hours with luke. it was clear he loved his craft and adored his fans. he was honest and charming. >> what works for me is just try to keep the [ bleep ] to a minimum. don't lie to them and don't give them anything to write about. >> you've just gotten married recently. don't you want to hang out with your wife and do husbandly things? >> yeah, but, you know -- >> i don't know what those husbandly things would be. >> even after his divorce in 2003, luke remained friends with his ex. he was a devoted parent to his two children, lived life to the fullest and had no regrets. >> life is experiential. you got to get out there and you got to try it and you got to fail sometimes and to get to any success you got to fail a few times and so, yeah, you got to earn it. >> i know this is still very

"i mean, i hope it goes" -- what was that voice? i don't even recognize that voice anymore. >> we were there when jason made his directorial debut on the show, he's been calling shots ever since. >> where are my thespians? >> right here. >> lovely, you look fabulous, darling. >> is jason directing? >> he has a nice butt. >> we sort of get to look in his eyes and stare at his butt a lot, and it makes us want to do a really good job. >> can we flash back to this and this guy and this is you talking about luke. >> i said, luke, do you surf? and he said, no, do you? and i said, not a stitch. we're going to get along just fine. >> i remember that night that i met luke incredibly clearly. when we read that first script, the green room script. >> i remember that night he came
