7:00 am
and that breaking news we're following this sunday morning. the can kade fire continuing to burn in sonoma county thousands of people are under evacuation orders and mandatory evacuation orders have expanded overnight, good morning, everyone. >>i'm robin winston we're continuing the story we're following the road closures that are in place the other fires that are popping up around the bay area as well and the new evacuation orders that are in place for sonoma county. >>and i'm marty gonzales who want to get more now from john travel on the evacuations. hi john good morning. good morning to you guys as well. yeah, i've shun orders expanded overnight across the noma county. i had a potential spread of the kinkaid fire in those very strong winds now we do have updates for you on many shelters that have reached capacity now that includes the santa rosa veterans memorial petaluma can vent community center petaluma veterans building all areas in petaluma are having reached capacity so evacuees at this point are actually urged to
7:01 am
head south to the marine county fairgrounds plenty room down there that is the safe place for you to head. you do see so many areas up here in sonoma county that are affected by that evacuation which i'm circling for you on screen. this extends far to the west of highway one oh one clear out to the coast in many communities in fact a 50,000 people alone right around healdsburg in windsor in those small surrounding communities, evacuated yesterday. most of these people are heading south and again if you are heading south. head down to marine county towards the fairgrounds there there's plenty of room if you do need to place a safe place to get to that's focus. first of all the king cake fire you can see those dots up in the northeastern portion of sonocotyhis is where the fire is actively burning and crews are so worried with the strongest of winds which day we'll talk to about the details of that here in just a moment that these winds will push that fire up prost containment lines when you do have such low humidity, the strong winds and then these warm winds to you can see embers actively burning a well
7:02 am
past even one oh one for miles so that is the concern here and why you do have such a wide swath of sonoma county that is under evacuation warning this includes the best to pull occidental forest bill as i mentioned before healdsburg down the winds are much of says santa rosa, including areas north of highway 12 and west of highway one north of steel lane lewis roshan a road to monticello boulevard to calistoga road. you are urged to head south and if you are on the northern portion of this evacuation area cloverdale southward. you are urged to head north moving away from the blaze itself. winds are pushing very strong and the southwesterly direction and that is why you are seeing these evacuation orders in so many areas, including the highway one oh one corridor from santa rosa through cloverdale clear out to the coastal highway one were jenner karma down to bow to give a all under evacuation order right now of course these areas right here and
7:03 am
many of them were evacuated yesterday afternoon. but for those of you in these expanded areas further to the south especially around santa rosa head south again marine county fairgrounds great place for you to go to plenty of room down there because many of our evacuation centers have reached capacity of them are in county fairground is open for evacuees and small animals people can go there. the sonoma county fairgrounds is also accepting evacuees, small pets are ok at that one as well. no identification is needed to stay at the shelters. i'm just get their know that you'll be safe a safe supportive place for anybody that needs it, especially those that are affected. in this mandatory evacuation area again the facility the kinkaid fire expanding overnight to the south is what it's looking like some of these larger areas are where the fire is actually burning hotter and what you do see these larger spots on the screen are situated to the south and west of the fire, so it makes sense that many of these evacuation
7:04 am
orders would be for areas to the south and west of the fire as this is what it appears to have expanded a overnight towards and many of these actively burning as i said so these areas are the most prone to that fire spreading further to the south again that is highway one oh one through much of sonoma county right here. many portions of saagain all read these areas for you just one more time all areas in the city limits of santa rosa west of highway one and north of highway 12. now urged to evacuate we're keeping you updated all morning long right now send back to robin marty all right. thank you very much, want to show you and show you this new video that we just came in to the kron 4 news room. >>of the can kate fire burning in sonoma county. it is causing so many causing the evacuation of some 90,000 people as john mentioned and the wind is the big is heading now to the southwest, the wind is blowing the fire in that direction. and that's why we're seeing so many
7:05 am
evacuations ahead of where the flames could be could be going. so this is new for new footage that we have been just overnight for of the firefight that continues on the can kade fire in a sonoma county. >>and also want to point out that this fire the smoke, it impacts our air quality york, you know you want to limit your outdoor activity make sure you keep children. because of course this pollutes our air and crews have not been able to make any significant progress so far on on this fire and the wind event that we're experiencing right now. also smoke that intensifies. percent containment this morning you to see how it's raging look at that look at the planes and and the smoke and that is what fire crews are dealing with this morning. >>and it has burned some 25,000 acres thus far just 1011% containment this point so it is still a very dangerous situation which is why many people have been evacuated from that area as we
7:06 am
mentioned about 90,000 people in the north bay are under that evacuation order this morning as a can kate fire just continues to wreak havoc in that area absolutely won't check in with kron four's christina tate row who's at one of those. >>evaction centers right now christine was at the grocery store yesterday. i saw a lot of folks filling up their shopping carts. >>getting those last minute necessities filling up the gas tank as they should. >>been able to spak to a few different family us now to give you a little insight of what it's like to get in here. thousands of people hele at the fair grounds of that are a bit of already evacuated that are in their cars that are camping out. so as you come in there still dozens of people waiting in line to get into the fairgrounds right now here in petaluma as they're doing so you see their car. completely filled to the brim with things with groceries and what have you a lot of the people here in the fairgrounds
7:07 am
also to their sleeping in their cars is you can tell it is incredibly windy out here is also very chilly out here. a lot of people are seeking that warmth in their cars course there if the evacuation center, there's there are plenty of cops and there's room for people of course a lot of comfort when you're around so many people just in your car so everyone here prepared that again to really emphasize. thousands of people here at the fair grounds of already been evacuated better here filling the area. i wanted you to i want to tell you there are for back shun centers, ready and set up for evacuees in this instance, we've got santa rosa veterans memorial building. >>paddling the fairgrounds where am right now petaluma vetera bg petaluma community center and noma county fairgrounds course we now have 5 new options the in or the evacuation centers that were set up. in the week those have now all been evacuated so obviously now there are new areas for people to go and we have thousands of people here taking advantage of that. i do want to tell you i actually here in joint live with 2 gentlemen who are originally

one in santa rosa and north of highway 12 1 oh one itself through healdsburg and winds are about 50,000 people in this area you are forced to evacuate yesterday people are recommended to head further to the south to the marine county fairgrounds is many of these other evacuation centers are filling up now having fulfilled up overnight so again marine county fairgrounds a is a great place to go for you this morning. you can see the blaze up here in northeastern sonoma county a much of the expansion overnight has been to the southwest, some of these larger circles indicating where that fire is burning a bit hotter. so we're already seeing south westward expansion of the blaze. that means that the likely further expansion of it is in these pink areas on the map and us the evacuation orders that we do have this includes one oh one from cloverdale down on through santa rosa communities in here such as chiquita down through windsor on down to northern portions of santa rosa itself. and clear out to the coast bodega bay car mat

up to general all these areas looking at mandatory evacuation orders now it is advise that you had to the south again we do have those evacuation centers in marine county. this fire has now grown to 30,000 acres and only 10% contained and with the wind event such as this. you are looking at the potential for even those containment lines to be jumped by these areas of embers that we are likely to be burning a man being pushed up even over those containment lines now we do have a evacuated orders in effect indefinitely for many of these areas. so those safe place to go again the marine county fairgrounds is where officials are advising people had to back to you. all right john thanks a for that update. >>now let's check in we have more team coverage shots starting with sarah stinson who is in the north bay, she has a a close look she's right there on the front lawn talking to the folksha t there this morning, sarah what's the latest update from your standpoint. to the east of it and and that's because

>>welcome back to kron 4 morning news, good morning, everybody we continue to track these winds of course the big story has been they're going to be around all day today tonight. tomorrow morning as well we give you snapshot of how we stand just about a selective cities even in san francisco are going about 24 miles per hour winds. the sustained winds 2036 for fairfield and they drop off to the teens a little bit and some of those cities in the east bay, however august can be much higher than that and some localized areas freakish numbers get up to hurricanes
7:43 am
for strength winds so that's not to some crazy you've been hearing about it some selective areas, we're getting winds that high. here's a look at what it looks like later today and notice how the winds quickly jumped to the north east direction. this is the dry offshore pattern it completely brings konta now a t tight air right to our coastal location. it cancels us out as a coastal city. so we're not even the tical marine layer that kind of business forget about it doesn't apply on a day like today winds in the 20's in the teens all over the bay throughout the day today, they just don't let up this takes us at about 11 o'clock at night. they still continue overnight to take us into monday morning about 6.15 or so the to the switch a little bit back to the north particular the north bay. it's quite active solano county getting the brunt of it that's why they're in the high wind warning by the way it breaks up a little bit here in the east bay in the peninsula, but it's still quite active. let's watch the moisture levels with all of this today they drop off that's typical you see the numbers drop off on the day
7:44 am
