>>in the morning they have it under control right now that still trying to get it out 're like you mention i also saw it during my drive into san francisco thankfully at this time we have no reported injuries on scene to take a look at this video you can see just how massive those flames were local businesses in the area was able to talk to some of them and they describe how scary it was to see this fire now it started at 04:00am this morning again. this is a four-alarm fire more than a 100 fire units responded to the scene they also had about 45 fire engines here to respond to this fire now in doing so that also damaged one of the apparatus is here one of the fire trucks were damaged trying to put out this fire now again speaking to business owners here on the scene they tell me that the warehouse that was actually burn was actually a facility where a lot of the fisherman keep their equipment so if you can imagine over the weekend

for the holidays are trying to prepare for a lot of business for this to happen a lot of the business owners in the area are devastated by the fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire something very significant that we know about this fire is that one of the fire boats saved the jeremiah o'brien now you might know that liberty shield bill during war war 2 and named after the american revolution warship so very historical ship being saved here in this fire now i got a chance to talk to some of the crews on scene and talked about the massive blaze this morning. >>the fire boat say plan to stamp cisco fired and 3. it was put in position to protect the historic blind us all the saint francis for my operations chief saved this the jeremiah o'brien nestle. >>now again some of these fire engines on scene also helped stop the spread of that fire

to neighboring buildings as they continue to work to try to get put out there's also a museum here on the here and they also say from being burned in that fire again we'll be here all morning very active scene but for now like those is this is that i spoke to you know just devastated with the fire. they're hoping things can get put out before the holiday weekend really starts to begin for now reporting here that here at the harvey kron 4 news, thanks right now. >>weather service says smoke from the fires going to linger for hours today, let's get a check of the weather with john trimble is he standing by with a look at that so the winds just a not loans to strong this morning, john. >>so yes that's the situation. james winds pretty calm this morning. so you did have that plume being sentenced the upper atmosphere at least initially pushing down that day but most of it just spttled right in the debate you can actually see right here in san francisco. that plume still putting up some smoke, it's definitely not as dark as it was earlier some wider smoke which is a sign of

containment that those crews have gained on the fire but obviously that hayes is really subtle didn't now the most dangerous risk is with them that if you block areas of the pier itself but if you are sensitive to that smoke you can see how it is filtered in across the rest of the city of san francisco and a look from across the bay down at the city shows you you can't even see the city skyline just barely the top a sales force tower and you there now what's going to happen today winds are going to pick up a little bit later on this morning that can help us turn to continue to defuse the spoke a little bit we're already seeing that smoke actually be doing to become the pews or the past 30 minutes you had improvements in visibility and you're seeing a little bit less about easy puso there's already improvements being seen but as we do push or went to the rest of the morning, especially if you are in the city of san francisco, this is something you want to be mindful of if you have some sensitivity to some poor air quality conditions, stay inside this

morning and just give that opportunity for winds of filter. the smoke out a little bit later on this morning as far as what the nws reported take a look at that you see that little black dots there at the northern end of san francisco. this was actually heat signature reported by the national weather service up from a satellite detection earlier on this morning you can see how cool the rest of the bay area was and then just how much heat that fire was putting up earlier on were clear across the bay area you can see any smoke here on local a satellite imagery. but what i did a dry out for us our prevailing winds which put that plume just south of the city earlier on this morning again this plume is it really detected by radar anymore at this point as that fire has a really stopped putting up the heavy smoke that it was earlier most of what you're seeing right now is for smoke impact is located pretty locally of the north beach marina district scalp, hollow areas right around the

vicinity of this where that smoke is just settled down into the surface. good news as improving conditions can be expected a bit later on this morning as winds to pick up and just as the spire produces light smoke, but we are going to be taking a look at that throughout the morning we'll be keeping you updated. i have more in your forecast talking about our heat wave ahead of us still to come back to you guys. >>all right and just in time for memorial day weekend dine-in restaurants. wineries and pubs are reopening in sonoma county. they just got the state's approval up there to move forward in phase 2 of reopening the restaurant's food facilities can now open for outdoor dining only wineries and tasting rooms and bars and pubs can offer curbside pickup. >>delivery and outdoor meals summer day camps and other recreational programs can also provide children care and supervision of children with limitations of course and ceremonies including graduations have to be held with household members attending enclosed vehicles like we were talking about

this ridge of high pressure builds in this is a very strong ridge of high pressure something that we call an omega block just building right in this is going to create a dome of heat sitting right across the bay and that some of our hottest weather that we felt so far this excessive heat watch will take effect monday that's the morial day leading us into tuesday wednesday and thursday not just for inland areas, but you see bayside and even san francisco, a areas lit up in red and that is a sign of just how hot it's going to get so even though today and tomorrow actually pretty comfortable days by memorial day on monday we have solid 90's 1 with 70's out by the coast. and that is really just the start of it because after that is when are even hotter temperatures begin to kick up so today is a good one to get outside enjoy as much as possible sure it's warmer areas like concord any off late going down to work back in the 80's but compared

the pier for over a decade nearly decades, it's been here so that was a really big concern of the fire crews on the scene this morning as they were trying to make sure that that ship was not damaged now there are some commercial businesses here in the area along with that news and like i mentioned the museum is okay along with those commercial businesses that fire still is burning but they said they have a hold on it and they don't anticipate that fire spreading to any of the other businesses in the area now, here's the big thing this morning. they're trying to figure out not only a cause of the fire so they're continue that investigation but they want any boaters in the area to make sure that you stay away here and peer 24 along with any swimmers that might be in the bay this morning we want to make sure you stay clear of the area as they continue to try to get a hold on this also continue to investigate the integrity of the pier to make sure that there was not any extensive damage we do know inside that warehouse where there are some

fishing businesses they quit man along with him grabbing equipment inside that warehouse we do know that a couple of the walls all the buildings also were damaged in this massive fire but no damages or no injuries rather to 80 by this morning and again what they're trying to figure out is what caused this massive fire that could be seen from the bridge and they're just grateful that they were able to say that ship along with the news in here and that no lives were lost are ian james, all right a good that they were there and it's a busy weekend in san francisco. so. >>somebody gets up now coming to the city they're going to see the smoke or a bit concerned at all to get a handle on thanks a lot right now. >>except for the lingering smoke of course it's still in the air we got a way for that to get out of here the studio. yeah, a little bit just to touch. we got john trimble here talking more about what the winds are like right now and hopefully when we might see the smoke kind of move off john. >>yeah, definitely improvements guys which is great news because his both of you guys notice that you're

driving in that smoke was hard to miss earlier this morning that plume is continually dying down you can still see it here in this view from our sutro tower little bit of white smoke lifting from the fire the a's is pretty obvious that is sending across areas like marina embarcadero and you can see even up towards the golden gate bridge in some cases but the good news is that deep black plume that was there just a couple of hours ago as one really settle down notes now so as a cruise of dance in the spy or a you will start to see improving conditions. one of the reasons that it's just so easy out there across the city of san francisco right now as we do just how still air pushing that smoke or right down to the surface. so it hasn't had a whole lot of a chance to get pushed out of the region, yes, just yet. you are starting to see a bit more of the city's skyline from alcatraz just a sign that smoke is now beginning to diffuse and yes, definitely some improvements. this was earlier this morning

right here you see that the black area right there this is a radar detected heat signatures and well the rest of the bay area was nice and cool this morning. that's how hot this fire was burning up you're 45. now skies are nice and clear and so little smoke that we can't even see anything on visible satellite from it. earlier this morning you can see those orange arrows that's the direction that those light winds were pushing the upper advance of that bloom, so if you are in areas as far south as brisbanei as down towards even san mateo you may detect a slight chance of pace but most of that smoke, it's really just settle down in the northern part of san francisco and is already beginning to defuse so that is certainly good news. there now, but also good news got some heat ahead of us and talking when to expect the bulk of that you still to come in your full forecast so stay with us back to you guys, thanks john at 7.36 and that the county was the first in the bay area to reopen restaurants for dine and services kron four's gayle

their best to put it out before too much was damaged, but we do understand that there was a warehouse destroyed that contained a lot of the equipment that fisherman uses lot of crab pots and this is the same pier that has the u.s. is papa nato that flooding submarine the uss. jeremiah o'brien, the floating museum and the museum echenique of all those antique a pinball machines and everything else luckily. those were saved, but the warehouse was destroyed in a long time since i've been there but it was a lot of fun now now saying that you do a you know like that anymore because of covid right there you go into these museums packed in and playing games, touching the same stuff so it's off limits for another you this morning with the fire, let's get a look at the weather this memorial day weekend a lot of people are just going to be enjoying it. >>at home as we have been or may be out in a park in their own little circle that's right san francisco made circles. how's it circles are beginning to be starting to a little yellow to gray after all the

pier 45. right along fisherman's wharf and the flames were shooting out of buildings at 04:30am in the morning part of the building collapse and then. >>they got more than a 100 firefighters out there and put that fire out of on the scene right here you can see just how intense that fire was and the response from firefighters that multiple ladder trucks showering rain shower water down on that fire doing their best to keep it from spreading of which they did in fact leave crawford made a harvey said i live at the scene to tell us more about how they were able to keep the fire to the warehouse and save a lot of the surrounding buildings reyna. >>it's a quite a lot of work like you mentioned over a 100 firefighters here on the scene massive this morning. i'm actually joined live with the man himself has been out here all morning working the fire, you know one let's talk about what you saw. >>so thank you this fire came in at 4.15 this morning, our first warm companies described and actively. large fire to the rear appear 45 see as an

charlie if you look behind me that's the bar and appear 45 this fire quickly grew to a 4th alarm fire. through the duration inspire we saw wall collapses which did not injured firefighters or damage fire apparatus. we did have a truck company 13 which if you look at the second tower. that's basically where trucks are team was at the beginning of this fire. the flames are so high. it was reaching the tip of the 100 foot aerial ladder truck. the damage the tip of the truck. we ought to put water hoses on that truck and we kept that truck loading thousands of gallons of water on this until we're able to pull it out and replace it with another apparatus, we train here. specifically to make sure that these fires don't spread that truck company really cold that fire in the initial phases from spreading to the adjoining a warehouse on this side which we can't see is the historic

jeremiah o'brien war vessel. from world war 2. fire boat 3 did an amazing job, putting thousands of gallons of water in between the building and that vote as flame links were allowed being over that vessel again hundreds of feet high. we're happy to say that there is minor damage. some blistering to this vessel in some of the acts are old deck diesel gas tanks week were actually melted the tips of them were melted so if those had gone we could literally lost the jeremiah o'brien. so there's anything positive out of this tragic event is that at the beginning of memorial day weekend. we are able to. save really the jeremiah o'brien the tribute to all those who have given. for our country and that is one thing that can be positive out of this tragic event and as we

progress on this fire which is still active is not contained are under control. are key points now are making sure that the large volume of debris that has collapsed down into the building are out our investigators are concerned that we may have some homeless in the building these are only speculations based on i asked accounts of homeless getting into these buildings they will be looking at footage in making that determination at this time. in repeated attempts by our rescue companies under fire investigators have resulted in no indications that they're being victims in this fire. now i know this morning lieutenant baxter you talked about it being so difficult for you here on scene to get this fire put out we talk about that. >>yes so we train out here specifically because this is an area where we how all large volume of real estate large

warehouses, it's on the waterfront this building that burned down is a peer it's above the water. we have hydrants that are around the area on different grid system so that we can actually it's just the pressure to keep our fire apparatus as you can see the fire aerial trucks with thousands of gallons of water we need that pressure if you look over to my left you can see the large diameter hose that a special host tender that was called in from outlying a station rings and this hose that we basically out an above ground fire hydrant from an off ridge fire system so that we have water powering the other far operatives that we can't see behind us so that we have adequate pressure to put this fire. out those are just some of will to use that we had to go around to make sure that we can do this we would not have been able to get this rapid the aggressive fire attack if we did not have passed training in collaborative free

as dallas partnerships with entities such as the port the police department the coast guard and are joining community members who really assisted us in past events past trainings and drills to allow us to facilitate what we have today. we know the jeremiah was say we know the museum was saved, let's talk about those businesses that are inside that were damaged so at this time, i know the red light fleet is one of the confirmed entities. >>the jeremiah o'brien is one of the entities that are in there we have some crowding companies in addition companies that are in there. >>i worked still working on establishing confirmed verification of those those additional but at this time, those companies are going to be a near total loss of their assets as this building is completely collapsed down its base pearce structure. and again we went to a defensive mode immediately on the spire due to the volume of it. and

there you look really closely and pointing it to them out and that is that smoke plume a big difference were at earlier, we could see a dark plume just lifting from this fire and that's what was resulting in the really easy conditions. we had earlier i've been watching this for you all morning long and i can tell you it just gets clear in clear as the smoke begins to defuse so even though it certainly doesn't look like the clear as day just yet we have seen some pretty big improvements, your san francisco from the north bay right here couldn't even see any of the skyline a points earlier now your sales for star at least there in the distance a little bit of a hazy start that's not any marine layer you're saying that's just the a's from the fire right there and earlier this morning as that fire was burning of the warmest a this was a satellite detected a heat signatures right here and you could just see how hot the fire was burning in that dark brown and black eye compared to the cool search the morning

that the rest of the bay area jets. so this was a massive fire certainly put up a lot of smoke there for a while the good news is is that we haven't seen a lot of that smoke making its way elsewhere in the bay area part of that is because winds have been pretty cop that plume earlier this morning was drifting today. east to southeast and uh you are maybe smelling a little bit of it if you are stepping outside bayview in brisbane but most of you that are noticing a right there in the vicinity of the blaze within just a few blocks radius is where it's at its worst and as i mentioned already beginning to defuse so that is good news. we are going to see increasingly clear conditions and overall a nice and sunny day even for san francisco this afternoon. but the not so good news for me is just around the corner, hottest temperatures of the year so far and potentially record breaking heat, i'm talking what that means for us as we make our way it's memorial day still to come in your full forecast. >>back to you guys all right john. thank you time now is 8.13 as we head to break again a reminder. our breaking news

see the black cloud lingering and they got the flames out there still much work to do because after investigate mop up and everything else which is why a reyna is still out there this morning, boy and a scary situation in fact, let's bring rain into the next and raina when those when the peers like that a breakout in fires. >>it's really scary because you got a lot of buildings and warehouses, businesses so close together but it looks like they were able to contain it to just that one building right. >>yeah, they were able to contain it just to this area and you know people in the area told me that they saw the massive flames and they were in disbelief at how big the fire was they were afraid that the museum's of the other businesses in the area we're going to damage because of that and thankfully they were able to contain this fire just to the warehouse here appear 40 final let's take a look at the video from this morning look at those massive flames here pier 45 over a 125 firefighters here on the scene had about 45 fire trucks, you know it was so massive that one of the trucks here was damaged they're calling this a

four-alarm fire this all happened around 4.15 thankfully, we know that no one was inside and they're reporting that no injuries i just want to give you guys some perspective here at pier 45 this is where it's located there are a lot of them commercial buildings here in the area along with them some businesses in storage units here on scene but the main thing they're talking about this morning. it is the museum that was saved and the s as chair mile ryan that was also save you might remember this liberty ship was built during world war 2 and named after the american revolutionary war ship captain jeremiah bryant. so that's where the ship gets named for him, but it's been here for decades here at the pier. now of the port official told me in terms of what was inside of that warehouse, we're looking at some marine businesses like on fishing gear with a fisherman's used to store lot of their fishing gear also i'm told that red and white fleet office was inside now they are also telling me that the jeremiah

o'brien had something here inside that warehouse that was burned so again still waiting to get more information on that now i spoke to some local business owners that are here on the pier and they tell me just to their thoughts on the fire what this means during this busy holiday weekend will bring it back we get to work at the busy day today. it's been slow. >>distributed to restaurants and whatnot because of this covid-19 thing. and today was going to be a busy day because of the memorial day weekend and we're you know in a phase where you know a lot of businesses are trying to get back up and running. so we're going to be you know very busy today and all all my crew standing right here. it hope and we can go a you know get them hours and get some work done. >>it can you imagine waking up this morning and seeing the massive fire right next to your building and not knowing if your business is going to survive you know you have the

coronavirus pandemic going on right now and then also you have a business owner like that just nervous that he's not going be able to make money over the holiday weekend. so a lot of stress again if there is any silver lining it's the news danielle brian i would say to this morning currently they're trying to figure out the cause of the fire so they're still investigating here on the pier and my kids can see very busy behind the fire crews still on scene trying to get everything cleaned up this morning. they want people to know that are in the area to stay away also if you're swimming swimmers to stay away from here 45 along with voters that might be out here. but i'm just grateful that they were able to get out and that there were no reported injuries star ian james all right, thanks a lot of >>well let's talk more about the smoke them that are going to be dealing with from that fire. it hung around a bit this morning lingering pretty close actually to ground level but john here with more on the outlook and when we can expect the skies to really start clearing still a little hazy right now john. >>yeah, definitely still easy

james, but there have been improvements which is good news but that smoke right along embarcadero right there up and even in some areas like the marina out towards north beach, i'm still a not to cause some problems for those who be sensitive to a look at this you can see a lot more of the north side of san francisco from sutro tower you can still see some of that smoke lingering from the blaze looking really closely pointing it out on them out for you that smoke plume not near as dark as it was earlier this morning it's all bury easy conditions right across the city. so yes, seeing improvements still a touch of haze though waiting out from across the bay that hayes has defused a little bit further but conditions are improving and as wind speeds do generally pick up this afternoon this is going to help to disperse smoke right now san francisco still remains really calm and that's one of the reasons that we've seen that smoke just settled right down into portions of

san francisco look at what happens this afternoon though winds will pick up that's going to help to defuse that smoke a little bit more and really by the afternoon and into tomorrow it will be a thing of the past not really something we're talking about anymore skies are beautiful in crystal clear as we zoom in on the city you can see the location of that please and where that plume of smoke was sent earlier this morning you stop mostly drifting right to the south right across the bay of course now is that smoke plume really isn't really a thing anymore as a cruise control of this place, you're going to see a lot less of it throughout the course the day now from smoke to eat that's what we're talking from this point beyond in the rest of your forecast we have some triple digit keeper some parts of the bay come next week which all beginning to still in the rest of your forecast. back to you guys in the studio, thanks a lot john. >>dine-in service is now a lot of restaurants in sanaa solano county and businesses are helping that customers feel

>>good morning at 09:00am the breaking news comes at a san francisco you can see on your screen. the massive fire that broke out at pier 45 this morning. right there on fisherman's wharf the huge response by firefighters we had over a 100 firefighters there as you can see what ladder trucks and all sorts of equipment trying to get this thing stamped out before it burned down everything else on pier, 45. yeah luckily it because of their hard work for about 4.30 this morning and now hours later, they're still mopping up kron four's rana harvey. >>is live at the scene with the latest reyna. >>it's right there still looking into how much damage was done to the pier here there were several structural collapses inside that warehouse fire this morning. we want to show you just how massive this fire was you can see it from the bridge driving into the city this morning, this is the pier 45 over a 125 firefighters, it took them about 45 fire engines, one truck here was damaged on

scene trying to get that fire out there telling me this was a four-alarm fire that happened at around 4.15. but thankfully, no one was inside and we want to show you exactly where this fire was here at pier 45 take a look at this map you can see there are some of museums nearby also there i was the jeremiah bryant that was also saved in this fire along with that museum that's here now you might remember the ss year mile brian is a liberty ship built during world war 2 and named after the american revolutionary war ship captain jeremiah o'brien, it's been a year at the port here for decades now i talked to lieutenant baxter with the san francisco fire department that tells me more about the effort it took to save that fire boat say plan to stamp cisco fired and 3. >>it was put in position to protect the historic blind us all the saint francis for my

right we're back it's 9.15 again our continuing coverage of this breaking news story this morning, the fire that broke out appear 45 long fisherman's wharf at the time boy it was pretty intense us around 4.30 this morning that this video was shot you can see the huge flames and that large plume of black smoke going up into the air. a warehouse caught fire and burned down in fact we have a satellite image shows you the warehouse we're talking about it's on the right hand side of the piers that whitish roof warehouse right next to the uss jeremiah o'brien luckily, the floating museum is fine. the o'brien doing okay say for some minor damage with some blistering paint from the heat but the warehouse right next to it did in fact burn to the ground with the walls collapsing in. we actually have a live picture of the smoke that still visible coming up that burn pile basically what used to be the warehouse you can see that there towards the bottom edge of the screen and that's this. the smoke has been sort of wafting about the embarcadero in the waterfront all morning long that looks like beginning

to thin out, but that's what i'm wondering is is it possible that it could be heavier now or. >>the farther reaching than it was earlier let's go to that maybe the wind patterns play into that or something because it wasn't that bad and it almost looks worse than when i first drove n. >>yeah, that's the thing is now that it's tough using there are going to be areas that maybe pick up on it a bit that didn't earlier as those is just sitting right to appear right there but the good news is is that as an stuff using its doing so all are out there. a side of the blaze instead of just going to one specific area so it shouldn't have too much of an impact on one area of particular you'll just notice haze that gradually spreads continues to diffuse and then less and less of it's in the morning so that certainly the good news. we actually did see that smoke plume drifting over sfo earlier which could have resulted in some travel delays have there been any travelers it's a very quiet. a memorial

coast and 80's alongside the bay. that's just the start of it temperatures in the triple digits later on after that that means today a good day to maybe get some stuff done check on those relatives make sure that if you have some failing to shelter in place that is sensitive to the heat that they have a cool place to be 70's and 80's for highs which isn't all that bad, but certainly toasty tomorrow temperatures rise even further monday, the first day of her heat wave with upper 90's it and then you see those triple digits returning tuesday wednesday into thursday for inland spots near 90 degrees and not 2.90 degrees alongside the bay area's like fremont hayward and suspending 90's for you on those days. well, the coast getting close about 2.80 degrees. good news as friday of next week brings really a switch drop in temperatures. so there is an end in sight to this heat wave. but we have 4 solid days there that's really going to breathe they keep potentially record-breaking date i i it's

>>well breaking news this morning out of san francisco as we've been talking about this fire. a major fire that broke out early this morning at about 4.30 right along fisherman's wharf. right there at pier 45 in fact it was a warehouse that stored a lot of equipment for the fishermen. crab pots were there we had some office space there for some of the ferry. services as well so all of that going up in flames overnight luckily though the fire was contained to that warehouse apparently did not impact the nearby museums which is good news and businesses that are all packed in there that were just about to start curbside service conference reyna harvey. >>is live on the scene now with an update rana. >>that's right the businesses here in the area are happy that their businesses were not damaged in this fire but can you imagine over a 100

firefighters responding to the scene witnesses on the scene this morning described it as a very massive fire you can see for yourself just how big that fire was look at those flames all of that just pouring out of the windows the or not they had about 45 fire trucks on scene this morning, one truck was even damage trying to put out that fire that happened around 4.15 to decide if there was any silver lining it's no one was inside during that time now we want to show you where this was a this is here and here, 45 you might know there's a museum here also the s as jeremiah o'brien also is located here and that was saved it was so close to the actual fire. they managed to say that now that ship has been here for decades if they were talking about how the firefighters all went in to try to get this fire out and they were presented many challenges here on the scene this morning. it's a very tight corridor trying to get to that massive fire and so

they had a lot a lot of gear here to put that fire out now i spoke to local businesses were on scene talks about the holiday weekend and how they were getting prepared and to arrive this morning to that fire. they were devastated. i know we had that look we get to work at the busy day today. >>it's been slow distributed to restaurants and whatnot because of this covid-19 thing. and today was going to be a busy day because of the memorial day weekend and they were you know we're in in a phase where you know a lot of businesses are trying to get back up and running. so we're going to be you know very busy today and all all my crew standing right here. it hoping we can go a you know get them hours and get some work done. >>now this is not confirmed, but they're also investigating there possibly being some homeless people that were in that building overnight but again like i mentioned no injuries in that fire this morning, a port officials tell
