7:01 am
>>in the morning they have it under control right now that still trying to get it out 're like you mention i also saw it during my drive into san francisco thankfully at this time we have no reported injuries on scene to take a look at this video you can see just how massive those flames were local businesses in the area was able to talk to some of them and they describe how scary it was to see this fire now it started at 04:00am this morning again. this is a four-alarm fire more than a 100 fire units responded to the scene they also had about 45 fire engines here to respond to this fire now in doing so that also damaged one of the apparatus is here one of the fire trucks were damaged trying to put out this fire now again speaking to business owners here on the scene they tell me that the warehouse that was actually burn was actually a facility where a lot of the fisherman keep their equipment so if you can imagine over the weekend
7:02 am
for the holidays are trying to prepare for a lot of business for this to happen a lot of the business owners in the area are devastated by the fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire something very significant that we know about this fire is that one of the fire boats saved the jeremiah o'brien now you might know that liberty shield bill during war war 2 and named after the american revolution warship so very historical ship being saved here in this fire now i got a chance to talk to some of the crews on scene and talked about the massive blaze this morning. >>the fire boat say plan to stamp cisco fired and 3. it was put in position to protect the historic blind us all the saint francis for my operations chief saved this the jeremiah o'brien nestle. >>now again some of these fire engines on scene also helped stop the spread of that fire
7:03 am
to neighboring buildings as they continue to work to try to get put out there's also a museum here on the here and they also say from being burned in that fire again we'll be here all morning very active scene but for now like those is this is that i spoke to you know just devastated with the fire. they're hoping things can get put out before the holiday weekend really starts to begin for now reporting here that here at the harvey kron 4 news, thanks right now. >>weather service says smoke from the fires going to linger for hours today, let's get a check of the weather with john trimble is he standing by with a look at that so the winds just a not loans to strong this morning, john. >>so yes that's the situation. james winds pretty calm this morning. so you did have that plume being sentenced the upper atmosphere at least initially pushing down that day but most of it just spttled right in the debate you can actually see right here in san francisco. that plume still putting up some smoke, it's definitely not as dark as it was earlier some wider smoke which is a sign of
7:04 am
containment that those crews have gained on the fire but obviously that hayes is really subtle didn't now the most dangerous risk is with them that if you block areas of the pier itself but if you are sensitive to that smoke you can see how it is filtered in across the rest of the city of san francisco and a look from across the bay down at the city shows you you can't even see the city skyline just barely the top a sales force tower and you there now what's going to happen today winds are going to pick up a little bit later on this morning that can help us turn to continue to defuse the spoke a little bit we're already seeing that smoke actually be doing to become the pews or the past 30 minutes you had improvements in visibility and you're seeing a little bit less about easy puso there's already improvements being seen but as we do push or went to the rest of the morning, especially if you are in the city of san francisco, this is something you want to be mindful of if you have some sensitivity to some poor air quality conditions, stay inside this
7:05 am
morning and just give that opportunity for winds of filter. the smoke out a little bit later on this morning as far as what the nws reported take a look at that you see that little black dots there at the northern end of san francisco. this was actually heat signature reported by the national weather service up from a satellite detection earlier on this morning you can see how cool the rest of the bay area was and then just how much heat that fire was putting up earlier on were clear across the bay area you can see any smoke here on local a satellite imagery. but what i did a dry out for us our prevailing winds which put that plume just south of the city earlier on this morning again this plume is it really detected by radar anymore at this point as that fire has a really stopped putting up the heavy smoke that it was earlier most of what you're seeing right now is for smoke impact is located pretty locally of the north beach marina district scalp, hollow areas right around the
7:06 am
vicinity of this where that smoke is just settled down into the surface. good news as improving conditions can be expected a bit later on this morning as winds to pick up and just as the spire produces light smoke, but we are going to be taking a look at that throughout the morning we'll be keeping you updated. i have more in your forecast talking about our heat wave ahead of us still to come back to you guys. >>all right and just in time for memorial day weekend dine-in restaurants. wineries and pubs are reopening in sonoma county. they just got the state's approval up there to move forward in phase 2 of reopening the restaurant's food facilities can now open for outdoor dining only wineries and tasting rooms and bars and pubs can offer curbside pickup. >>delivery and outdoor meals summer day camps and other recreational programs can also provide children care and supervision of children with limitations of course and ceremonies including graduations have to be held with household members attending enclosed vehicles like we were talking about
7:07 am
yesterday. we talked with sonoma county supervisor david braben about what the new health order means now for dine in restaurants. >>think what you see from all jurisdictions is really working with their businesses to make sure that we can provide a pathway to success and quite just like this entire shelter in place some will be able to do more than others and that's just unfortunate at the end of the day it comes down to the social distancing requirements, the ability to separate tables by 6 feet some some restaurants and some bars and wineries even have more space and others and we're just going to have to work through that, but there isn't a willingness to use as much public right of way as possible and to streamline the approval process for that to allow restaurants in and other activities to take advantage of that additional space. >>effective immediately more california businesses can now offer alcohol to go with their meals the state's department of alcohol beverage control
7:08 am
says that bars and wineries and distilleries along with breweries that do not have their own kitchens but that partner with meal providers can participate in all of this however they have to be in a sealed container, the drink said is and can be purchased in conjunction with a meal only. >>don't over crowd, the parks in san francisco that's the warning from mayor london breed the city is expecting this warm a weather over the holiday weekend is going to drop a lot of people kron four's dan thorn has more on how officials are preparing. >>the parks across san francisco will likely have plenty of visitors memorial day weekend. nice weather presents attempting opportunity to get outside after feeling cooped up over the last several weeks as the weather is amazing the focus as it's great i'm so excited about the long weekend ahead. >>marina green visitors like shuri collect cars shops say they'll be taking advantage of the city's green spaces but she'll be doing it safely like many others who have been out we see a lot of people weighing knots ensuring that the follow the you know 6 feet

that the rest of the bay area jets. so this was a massive fire certainly put up a lot of smoke there for a while the good news is is that we haven't seen a lot of that smoke making its way elsewhere in the bay area part of that is because winds have been pretty cop that plume earlier this morning was drifting today. east to southeast and uh you are maybe smelling a little bit of it if you are stepping outside bayview in brisbane but most of you that are noticing a right there in the vicinity of the blaze within just a few blocks radius is where it's at its worst and as i mentioned already beginning to defuse so that is good news. we are going to see increasingly clear conditions and overall a nice and sunny day even for san francisco this afternoon. but the not so good news for me is just around the corner, hottest temperatures of the year so far and potentially record breaking heat, i'm talking what that means for us as we make our way it's memorial day still to come in your full forecast. >>back to you guys all right john. thank you time now is 8.13 as we head to break again a reminder. our breaking news

>>well breaking news this morning out of san francisco as we've been talking about this fire. a major fire that broke out early this morning at about 4.30 right along fisherman's wharf. right there at pier 45 in fact it was a warehouse that stored a lot of equipment for the fishermen. crab pots were there we had some office space there for some of the ferry. services as well so all of that going up in flames overnight luckily though the fire was contained to that warehouse apparently did not impact the nearby museums which is good news and businesses that are all packed in there that were just about to start curbside service conference reyna harvey. >>is live on the scene now with an update rana. >>that's right the businesses here in the area are happy that their businesses were not damaged in this fire but can you imagine over a 100
9:32 am
firefighters responding to the scene witnesses on the scene this morning described it as a very massive fire you can see for yourself just how big that fire was look at those flames all of that just pouring out of the windows the or not they had about 45 fire trucks on scene this morning, one truck was even damage trying to put out that fire that happened around 4.15 to decide if there was any silver lining it's no one was inside during that time now we want to show you where this was a this is here and here, 45 you might know there's a museum here also the s as jeremiah o'brien also is located here and that was saved it was so close to the actual fire. they managed to say that now that ship has been here for decades if they were talking about how the firefighters all went in to try to get this fire out and they were presented many challenges here on the scene this morning. it's a very tight corridor trying to get to that massive fire and so
9:33 am
they had a lot a lot of gear here to put that fire out now i spoke to local businesses were on scene talks about the holiday weekend and how they were getting prepared and to arrive this morning to that fire. they were devastated. i know we had that look we get to work at the busy day today. >>it's been slow distributed to restaurants and whatnot because of this covid-19 thing. and today was going to be a busy day because of the memorial day weekend and they were you know we're in in a phase where you know a lot of businesses are trying to get back up and running. so we're going to be you know very busy today and all all my crew standing right here. it hoping we can go a you know get them hours and get some work done. >>now this is not confirmed, but they're also investigating there possibly being some homeless people that were in that building overnight but again like i mentioned no injuries in that fire this morning, a port officials tell
9:34 am
me the jeremiah wright had some year inside that warehouse that burned businesses inside were some marine businesses like you mentioned fishing here in the air we also know that red and white fleet offices were inside so right now they are investigating the port integrity they have to make sure here at the how extensive that damage was they're asking people in the area to stay away as they continue to try things up get things cleaned out right now there's a lot of smoke in the area, so you can barely freedom even if you're not in 2 or 3 blocks from where the fire was you can smell it a so again to try to get things cleared out and cleaned up if you're out you're planning the water this morning, they're just encouraging people to not do that and for everybody's safety for now reporting here pier, 45 reyna harvey kron 4 news, thanks rain actually the national weather service is saying that smoke from the fire could linger for a few hours yet. yeah early on we saw this giant plume goes straight up and the smoke is kind of hovering above which is why when you and i came in
9:35 am
didn't seem so that yes and also to start sinking. >>down you should be good not actually there can you see that in the shot and it's kind of far away but on the lower left side you actually see the live trucks with water yeah, right there in the bottom left so anyway, they're still fighting at they're still trying to put out all the remaining hot spots and just marvel at the s and the smoke is still out there and that's what john's been talking about all morning long with that smoke kind of walking back and forth along the embarcadero john. >>yeah, it's just sitting there are high pressure means air is sinking so it creates that cal right over the bay. and you can actually see that in that you're right there where right above firms to church our you actually have blue skies and then there's that layer right there where that's a smoke is just wrong really sitting there it almost looks like a marine layer brothers is a hazy there and yeah there's those that water to trucks as spring there if you're 45 right there as james noted now obviously there is still haze out there and yes is the national weather service said this could linger
9:36 am
around for some time. >>take a mental image of what i've got on your screen right now which is your by you. this was the view at that same spot at 07:00am this morning and it shows you just how much improvement be what a difference so smoke is diffusing it's starting to become less and less a parent but as it sinks in spreads across the bay you may notice that slight a view that he is even in areas and the east bay are up into the north bay right alongside the bay where it's like sinking right along the shoreline, so just something to note if you have some sensitivities right now certainly not the time to be running right alongside the bay as those hazy conditions to persist winds are still very light and that's one of the reasons this airs just sunk in state and place but once we move our way into the afternoon. yes, what winds will be picking up a little bit that's just going to spur stats smoke and haze a little bit more so and results in improving conditions skies are crystal clear overhead as the high pressure ridge builds and as that high pressure ridge
9:37 am
builds we're going to see some really warm temperatures in the days to come. today certainly are most comfortable day of memorial day weekend. but i'm talking some excess and he just around the corner potentially dangerous heat for many of us. still in your full forecast back to you guys. >>very good. thank you john what president trump is ordering the reopening of houses of worship which has health officials concerned that isn't the only thing they're worried about caitlin collins has more. >>in a new study shows that an antimalaria drug championed by president trump may harm coronavirus patients hydroxychloroquine the study is the largest analysis done today and it reveals the coronavirus patients who are seriously ill and given clerk when or hydroxy-chloroquine we're more likely to develop abnormal heart rhythms or even die this i think the fda has been very clear on their website about their concerns about. >>i dropped the clerk and trump has been taking the drug in hopes of preventing himself
9:38 am
from getting coronavirus despite a warning from the fda that it hasn't been proven to be safe or effective at treating the virus or preventing it. >>i really think it's a great thing to try but he have to lose. i really think they should take it hydroxy chloroquine. if things don't go planned it's not going to. kill anybody. >>trump didn't address the study today, but he did announce that the cdc will issue new guidance to declare in places of worship as essential. >>today, i'm. it then to find houses of worship. churches synagogues. and mosques. as essential places that provide essential services. >>trump says he wants church is in other places reopened immediately and claim hill overruled governors who pushed back. >>some governors have deemed a
9:39 am
liquor stores and abortion clinics is essential. but it left out churches and other houses of worship. star right. if they don't do it. i will override the governor's. >>the new guidelines encourage religious houses to promote good hygiene like handwashing wear cloth face coverings intensified cleanings and encourage social-distancing while minimizing the use of shared worship materials like prayer books or him knowles he left questions about his statement to doctor deborah birx and his press secretary kayleigh mcenany boy it's interesting to be in a room that desperately wants to seem to see these churches and houses of worship stay closely i >>know maybe they wait another week. >>today march doctor birx his first appearance in the briefing room since late april lately she and other officials like doctor fauci have largely disappeared from the airwaves something doctor fauci told cnn will change soon. >>we've been talking with the communications people and they
9:40 am
realize we need to get some of these information out as most traditional memorial day activities have been postponed or altered. doctor birx encouraged americans to maintain distance but spend time outside this weekend. >>you can play cough. you can play tennis with mark falls. you can go to the beaches. the president ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of those who have lost their lives from the virus. >>in california, the state may give houses of worship to greenlight over a sooner than expected just hours after the president's comments governor newsome announced. they're reopening guidelines for churches. they're going to be ready by monday this monday at the latest he says. >>we've been throughout diverse ah well, interfaith and within the diversity of our faith base leadership all up and down the state working on the differentiation the large mega churches forces more neighborhood south church
9:41 am
is a different. styles of pews and sanitation protocols and synagogues first is working with other. face we've been working on those sectoral guidelines and we are just days away. the latest on monday. we will put out those guidelines. >>now before this thousands of churches around the state and signed a declaration that they were going to defy the stay at home order and open up regardless on may 31st now it seems like they will get some guidance and a little bit of sanctioning to do that. >>let's head to the east bay now where robbers region recreation area in the oakland hills is a popular spot for memorial day. folks visitors will still be allowed to walk in the park and ride their bikes which is good news but the parking lot there will be closed. so you have to live close enough to walk or bike to it. dave mason with east bay, regional parks district says is just one of the few parks which has closed its parking lots. >>we do have parking lots that are close these mostly those are ones that serve up the
9:42 am
areas and group activities so force with those not allow those are the areas have then you know for that reason however most of the park district acres remains a school for exercise, i'm walking i being a reading or says what not it's really about exercising not socializing during 19 types. >>if you want to learn more about what is closed and was open in the east bay, regional parks district just go to our website at kron 4 dot com and look for this story we have a full list there for just appreciate a bench. a bench in my neighborhood about one benches open data sit for a minute rest ernie's myself all also yeah. >>it had to break here at 9.42 still ahead the very latest on our breaking news story this morning. if you haven't heard was a big fire at pier 45 in san francisco right there in fisherman's wharf we'll
9:43 am
9:44 am
9:45 am
>>and we're back in i 45 san francisco's rec and parks department is continuing to add physical distancing circles to the city's parks. >>they haven't seen that we've got some video to show you crews of action painting actual circles at jackson playground and other parks around the city. they can be found also that the lawrence park washington square park marina green there about 10 feet wide and they're all 8 feet apart from each other. the department is adding the circles as a way to try to encourage people to be really conscious about physical distancing. either that's pretty incredible play a giant game of twist you right.
9:46 am
>>put your hand one circle and he can't these are 2 big maybe to pay like a giant game of connect 4 somehow on the job for defeating the purpose. james is supposed to keep us apart. this is >>if this is what it takes to kind of keep everybody focus which it's tough to stay focused after after a couple months of this. then i'm all for it. >>baby show you ad mask on him, >>the circles are there just as a guide right now people will not be cited for not staying within the circle, however, the city still technically under a shelter-in-place order so everyone is expected to course maintain physical distancing and wear a mask if you're going to plus it's a social thing so it gives you you don't seem like jerky or weird if you go oh excuse me yes just persist and circle them how do you broach that and you know your this is my life over my line with social distance police how serious you got to you have to and they're probably going to be a lot of
9:47 am
people out enjoying parks this memorial day weekend john travel here with a look at the forecast and i guess the word to the wise is maybe get that outside fun in earlier rather than later icas early and heat things up yeah. >>yes, i would definitely agree with that come monday memorial day i know many of us probably have it out not going to change much for you because we're sheltering in place, but it is going to be hot and that's the biggest thing you're going to have to just 2 sites, a joy today as much as possible. get yourself prepared for the excessive heat just around the corner because it is going to be dangerous for many of our inland areas and even up to the coast where many of us still have it easy. it is going to be too warm and not comfortable at all you look outside from timber on out towards the coast still showing some of the haze that is sold out into the bay itself from the spire at pier 45 earlier this morning watch out for that if you are walking along the bay for your morning walk got notice that is. >>regardless of if you're in san francisco or knox it's just sunk right down right
9:48 am
along the bay short temperatures are currently in the 60's to low 70's, but novato pittsburgh in fairfield are for spots in the 70's just a sign of the war, the head of us this afternoon as this very strong ridge of high pressure builds in a something called an omega block right here. it's going to push out any chance of rainfall and cooler air around the corner and just result in hot temperatures in fact near record breaking heat around the corner and that's why the excessive heat watches taking effect monday memorial day on through thursday, not just in one, but all along side, the shore of the bay and even up towards the coast in san francisco. this means on memorial day monday temperatures will rise well into the 90's it went 70's and even a couple of low 80's right alongside the coast and the bay, so this is just the start it's going to be even hotter after that come tuesday, wednesday and thursday. today our most comfortable one 70's 80's for your highs. definitely warmer than yesterday and are conquered antioch an app up to
9:49 am
86 degrees it's already getting hot but compared to where we're going to be specially come monday onward to thursday today is going to feel like a dream 97 for your average inland high cub and a and triple digits are inland areas. tuesday wednesday and thursday. those same days near 9290 degree highs right along that day and no escape out of the coast. it's are going to be toasting him or comfortable in triple digits. that's for sure in the 70's and 80's. there is relief in sight come friday, temperatures will rapidly fall back to the 80's which is just going to build glorious after triple digits. definitely a reminder to you if you do have family that is susceptible to heat. i know we're all sheltering in place make sure that they're set up in a good situation because if they don't have a seat this is going to be some sheet that is not going to be fun. i ought to be making our way through next week. that's your forecast all send it back to you got spanked john they're searching in bakersfield for a man who tried to burglarize a home but he was scared away by a 10 year-old girl.

9:51 am
walking to the house, but little does he know someone is in the car and is ready to put up a fight, she's very brave i am so surprised. she was. >>she was pretty shook up i feel really bad for her she was really scared, but that was that's. >>the bold move of her. >>a young hero who stood up. but now a family left wondering if this could happen again it was less than 5 minutes from the moment that she walks in the door to the car and i mean we do that all the time so. >>it's kind of scary just always have to be careful and watch out for your surroundings that like theirs. just people watching all the time you know even when ever you don't realize it. >>that's that is everybody's at home. these days to go and a lot of people have their fell off and you have a garage up as you're bringing groceries in from the trip to the store and you know these days you know getting all right. we'll take a quick break. it is 9.51 when we come back. a quick look at a graduation ceremony for seniors at skyline high school
