>>local news station. >>and the breaking news this morning protests across california turned violent as crowds demonstrate over the death of george floyd in minneapolis you can see them boxes showing the different protests that happened in oakland, san jose, sacramento and los angeles. many started peaceful and then took a turn for the worse. in the later hours, including one in oakland. that was deadly for a federal officer will have all the details coming up in just a few minutes, i'm darya folsom and i'm james fletcher we do have a full hour of news ahead, including the latest on

the pandemic and some of the cities that are starting to move into phase 3. but we do want to begin with the deadly violence. >>that erupted overnight across the bay area as daryn mentioned to federal protective service officers suffered gunshot wounds amid protests that broke out in oakland last night, one of those officers died from his injuries. it happened at the ronald dellums federal building on clay street as with 10 o'clock last night. police say a vehicle drove up to the building and someone inside that vehicle started firing on officers. so far there have been no arrests the fbi now in charge of the investigation. the federal protective service which falls under the department of homeland security provides law enforcement services at us government facility. >>there were a number of protests in oakland last night stores were vandalized looted set on fire kron four's reyna harvey is live in oakland with the details reda. the morning daria we know that protests turned deadly last night and we saw people from across the bay area gathering in oakland

to protest the death of george floyd will take a look at your screen. these are images that came overnight into the newsroom. you can see we're starting off with this target. this is on broadway and you can see a group of people who broke into that oakland target. you can see them going to that store smashing windows grabbing items were also hearing reports that fire at the target is still not out this morning. we're also getting reports that other stores, including a walgreens a bank in the starboard starbucks was also broken into and set on fire here in oakland. now the protest in oakland started at about 08:00pm friday evening, some protesters meeting at city hall. quickly the group grew in size from a few 102 thousands overnight. now what you're also seeing we're going to show you these other images of a mercedes benz dealership being vandalized the car inside of that dealership set on fire the dealership set on fire. the car's tag with the

slurs targeting law enforcement i've seen images, pouring in from over social media that show a diverse mix of people out on the streets there, chanting phrases including black lives matter and i can't breathe, we know those rough lloyds last words before he was killed. we know at some point through the protests. police were seen by those in attendance, using some tactics against the protesters. also visa protesters ended up on the i 80 freeway here in oakland, we saw some reports that the bay bridge was even shut down for some time due to protest. now we have some numbers these are coming out from the police department here. the show asked just how widespread. this was overnight. they say 60 looters were detained overnight, 22 people were arrested. also 13 officers were injured here in oakland. now we also know like you mentioned the 2 federal protective service officers were shot, according to police one sadly has passed away.

we're also hearing from the oakland police chief this morning to talk about the chaos that erupted overnight. >>we have had demonstrations last night and they started out peacefully and we stood with our community here in the city of oakland to provide safe spaces and respectful spaces for demonstrators. what we saw in later on in the evening turned violent and disruptive. and we want to call on everyone who would come to oakland and stand with us to respect the memory. george floyd and the community to ensure that they are peaceful. >>respectful. >>of the city of oakland and especially our downtown businesses which have been suffering since the pandemic began with for all of the mutual aid and other agency partners that have helped us tonight. but as we have seen across the country. we saw

the south bay as well there were demonstrations in san jose. they also started peaceful and quickly escalated. let's take a look at some of the video here of what happened this an officer who was knocked down and dragged by fellow police with the help of a bystander to a safer area. so that they could check his injuries. we have. followed many of the protests as you can see here and showed that some of the police cars were vandalized there windows broken messages spray painted highway one o one was shut down in both directions and look at this smart 4 o'clock in the afternoon yesterday. this is a group that took over the freeway and just started pounding on windows in some cases breaking drivers windows doors here. you can see this man caught up in the middle of it san jose mayor tom le carre a sam liccardo spoke to kron 4 about the demonstration. >>we want to make sure people know they can feel proud. a protest is in absolutely a

and. in response to the outrage. what happened in minneapolis it russians. the death toll was. but we cannot allow for violence or ensure city. >>mayor liccardo also says that officers are not going to provoke a violent response, but he says the police will arrest people who crossed the line as they are going to try to disperse crowds and prevent things from becoming violent. >>the minneapolis police officer that held his knee on george floyd's neck for nearly 9 minutes leading to his death is now facing 3rd degree murder and manslaughter charges their child in is the officer in question documents now show floyd was unresponsive for nearly 3 of those minutes while china's new was crushing. the back of his neck all the while claiming i cannot breathe i can't breathe. the minneapolis police department has fired child and along with 3 other officers are now protesters are now calling for the rest

for this protest to be violent that was not their intent you know, although we saw that it did go there their intent was to get a very clear message out that they were tired of the shootings from law enforcement of unarmed black people and again they're investigating the shooting of that in oakland now this morning that a live updates throughout the morning to give you as we continue to keep a pulse on this can very uh active situation daria yeah, thanks a lot of activism is the word a lot of people have. got an active after what happened to george floyd the need to the point that he was breathing you could said he couldn't breathe and the demonstrations were really sparked after only one police officer, the one who has need to his neck was charged with 3rd degree. manslaughter but the other 3 officers who stood by have not been arrested they were just fired. take a look what happened in san jose. there was a big protest.

there. that also started peacefully but then look at this an officer was injured he was not down. and then police as you can see a bystander to help to move him to safety so they could check what his injuries were and then you see the lineup of police that were responding to the protests and some of the damage that was done to vehicles, including police vehicles. a lot of protesters were peaceful as you can see here just holding their messages. some of those spray painting their messages on police cars and businesses highway one o one was shut down in both directions and this as you can see turned violent for people that were caught up in the middle of the protest had nothing to do with anything but they were trying to drive they were brought to a halt and in some case confronted by angry demonstrators who were outraged about what happened and what continues to happen to african-americans by law enforcement, sam, look heart of the mayor of san jose spoke to kron 4 about these demonstrations. we want to

johnson family in the fruitvale shooting. >>and the number of police death cases why might a prosecutor decide for a lesser charge of murder. do you think it's because it is more realistic too. >>get a conviction. well certainly the prosecutor has to make a judgment. >>about where the where he can get it where they can get a conviction or not and you based upon the onus is a problem. so yeah he might have made the decision that in his own mind it would be easy for me to get a conviction on a lower chance that it would be on a bar is believed the evidence from this video would support more serious charges but he would be more challenging to prove it is certainly a more difficult case to prove first-degree murder was no question about that. >>yeah we have the intent. >>now so forth on it that has a law requires that's really difficult to do. and a police case that starts from an event situation back in oakland, a tribute to oscar grant the mural was unveiled last june 10 years after his death. >>in the last decade. johnson

and we're back at 7.41. this was the scene in kentucky and louisville friday night during a protest over the death of george floyd and while covering the events as they unfolded police fired. nonlethal pepper ball of bullets at a tv news crew happened while they were live on the air and you can see the officer right there aiming his gun right at the reporter who was clearly marked. she says she didn't know why they were being fired upon since they were behind the designated police line and clearly identified as the members of the press that protesters were also speaking out for brianna taylor who was killed by police there back in march. it happened when police were serving a non are a no knock warrant for suspected drugs that support the note that no drugs were ever found in her home and her boyfriend was charged with attempted murder for firing on officers as they entered his home but those charges have since been dropped. >>as we said the media ended

>>welcome back 7.44 and we're looking at cloudier skies outside across the bay area this morning, a look outside at san francisco from across the bay conditions out there. well definitely cloudy we are going to remain mostly cloudy throughout the and even though most of us are dry right now there are some light showers that are returned to the bay area after some heavy isolated thunderstorm activity overnight. that storm system that's resulting in our instability sitting just to our west that's going continue

cities in oakland is where an officer died sacramento saw demonstrations, san jose a lot of destruction and los angeles had demonstrations with hundreds arrested thanks for joining us. i'm darya folsom and i'm james fletcher will have a full hour of news ahead. the latest on the protests also the latest on the pandemic in some of the cities that are beginning to move into phase 3 of reopening, but we do want to start. >>with the deadly violence that we saw erupt overnight across the bay area's darya mentioned we have 2 protective service officers, suffering gunshot wounds amid the protests in oakland last night. one of the officers died from his injuries. we're told this happened at the ronald elems federal building on clay street at about 10 o'clock last night that's when police say a vehicle approached the building with someone inside that vehicle opening fire on the officers so far there's been no arrests but the fbi now is taking lead on the investigation as this is a federal crime because it was federal protective service officers who were guarding that building.

some reports that some mom and pop shops are also vandalized overnight. we're also going to show you this mercedes benz dealership broken into you can see a car on fire. vehicles vandalized with tagging on them and the actual building itself was set on fire. now the protest here in oakland started at 08:00pm friday evening, some protesters meeting at city hall. now quickly that group grew in size from a few 100 to thousands overnight. the protest was made up of a very diverse mix of people they were out on the streets you can hear them, chanting phrases including black lives matter. i can't breathe we know that was floyd last words before he was killed. now we know at some point do the protests police were seen by those in attendance. using some tactics on the protesters. also these protests ended up on the i 80 freeway here in oakland. it's also reports that the bay bridge was even shut down for some time due to protest. now we have some numbers from police overnight want to show you. they say 60 looters were

grabbing things. now reports are also coming in that there were other stores, including a walgreens a bank in a starbucks were also broken into or set on fire is showing images of some of those buildings now we've also seen online pouring in this morning local mom and pop shops in oakland, completely vandalized now that protests started 08:00pm friday evening, some protesters meeting at city hall. quickly that group grew in size it started out very small as a few 100 and then it just exploded thousands of people overnight there was a diverse mix of people out on the streets. all races and ages. we know at some point through the protest. police were seen by those in attendance using some tactics on the protesters, the air. also these protest ended up on the freeways, the i 80 year on the freeway was one of those freeways also we know that the bay bridge, the traffic on the air was also at a standstill

at some point. now we have some numbers to show you from a police this morning to give you a scope of what took place overnight. they say about 60 looters were detained, 22 people were arrested 13 officers were injured in oakland. like you mentioned those 2 federal protective service officers were shot according to the police and one sadly died. now the activist and the protesters that were out on scene say they were not trying to be violent. they were just trying to convey a message. obviously we know that things did get violent and very tragic last night. so again this morning there are some talks of another protest that is supposed to be happening in the city today. so again a very active situation as this story continues to develop we're going to be monitoring everything on the ground daria for now reporting on an oakland raider harvey kron 4 news release in the in san francisco is expecting protests because we didn't see a protest video from there
