and discover what's possible at lowe's. >>you're watching kron 4 morning news at 7. >>and thanks for waking up with us on a saturday, i'm darya folsom and i'm james fletcher let's get the hour started with a check of the weather we're seeing some fog out there because it can depend where you are john good morning. yeah that fog may make you want to sleep in a little bit more the saturday morning very grave for areas like san francisco, your view across the bay. >>is shrouded by some that low fog and even some coastal drizzle it's been showing up a little closer to the pacific visibility below a mile right now while you head inland and you're sitting under sunshine. that is until you head on into the oakland and berkeley hills where that fog is hanging out

this morning. marine layer going to burn off and then we do have sunshine ahead for us, although daytime highs today are going to be cooler weather you're inland or out along the coastline, you'll notice, a drop a few degrees 50's and 60's for your current temperatures later on today, we're holding on to 70's in san francisco and oakland on san jose out of the 90's back to the mid 80's, 86 degrees. more on your forecast. still ahead daryn. >>thanks a lot at 7 oh one and our top story this morning statues of controversial figures tied to slavery come down on the left a statue of confederate general albert pike was taken down in washington d c. >>it was the only confederate related statue in the nation's capital and on the right you see protesters taking down the francis scott key statue in golden gate park in san francisco. that was one of 3 statues that were toppled last night and james has more on

where those are located. yeah good morning so we have the google earth map. >>of the here between the de young museum and the academy of sciences that's where all 3 were located there in the central plaza and as we take a closer in look here you can see that on the music encore side that's where the oppressor statue was taken down. that's where it stood on the opposite end on the eastern side of the plaza that's where the francis scott key statute and the ulysses s grant statue in fact it's that icon here that marks the locations of both let's zoom into a street view level of you and you can see the actual statues if you haven't been to the park the statue on the right the bus that's the statue the bust of ulysses s grant in the foreground there in the background under the rotunda and you can sort of see it hollow there on the left side of the screen that's where the francis scott key statue. once stood again both taken down last night and that's what we're seeing here with the street level view story all right. let's have our team coverage continues now with kron four's reyna harvey who's out live in golden gate park right now

taking a look. >>at where the statue stood reyna. >>dorian james good morning, thanks for that breakdown. well that francis scott key statue. right there is where used to be that you can see it's not there any longer it was not the only statue hit overnight. we're going to show you right now images from that being taken down overnight you can see a group of people gathered here at the statue they. >>our through ropes. >>hayne that from the francis scott key statue. you see these 2 groups in a struggle to pull it down as they knock it down there celebrating set off fireworks. now francis scott key is the man was responsible for the star-spangled banner and his history is controversial and that his family had links to slavery. >>and the second video we want to show you you never else here, virginia pero serra you can see here they have roads tight to his statue as protesters knock it over. now

sierra was a catholic priest responsible for missions across the state here. >>his legacy is controversial and that he used a lot of native american indian labor to build his missions. now also hear the this is as grand statue was also tore down in the park. now the show you the cleanup efforts. this morning of this is here when i arrived this is a state parks working to clean up. >>all of the graffiti you can see that was placed here on the francis scott key statue. it's not the only statue here in the area that has graffiti written all over it. now on thursday want to show you what's been happening this week on thursday the christopher columbus statue. was taken down in front of coit tower that was removed by the city because protesters threatened to take it down and throw it into the bay area don't into the bay. so they got a star on removing that statue. now here in the bay area we seen the statues being

taken down also over in sacramento, let's hit the air and show you this is the john satter statue in sacramento, in front of center hospital. this was taken down here earlier in the week officials remove that statue due to threats from protesters as well. now again, a state officials are on scene trying to remove all the graffiti. >>and a lot of other items that have been placed on these different statues in the area. >>they're going to be here for some time because it was more than just these 3 that were taken down. there are also several other statues in the area that are covered in graffiti we're now in 14 years and was just going to harvey kron 4 news all right, thanks a lot rhonda. >>let's jump over to the east bay where thousands gathered at lake merritt in oakland a celebrate juneteenth yesterday commemorated the day when the last enslaved african americans learned of their freedom here in the u.s. and you can see by the video here near the amphitheater that it was a pretty packed crowd

people enjoying themselves gathered on the lawn dancing showcasing art work. however, the celebration coincides with multiple hate crime investigations by local police and the fbi after multiple nooses in a fake body was found hung from a tree there at the lake tomorrow that to come. >>yeah and all the people will been investigating those dead. they did but even noses but at the end of the day we took them down and we haven't been a really hard time right now, but i mean we still happening. >>you know come together and celebrate each other. >>local vendors at the juneteenth celebration at lake merritt were raising money for black lives matter should there be celebrations that will be covering all throughout the day throughout the morning. >>7 '06 and there are growing concerns that people are going to get and spread coronavirus at a rally later today for president trump in tulsa oklahoma. the oklahoma state supreme court rejected our request that everyone at the

rally be required to wear face masks and maintain social distance inside that arena. the holes about 20,000 in the build-up to the rally the president actually threatened any protesters planning. >>to go to tell so we have jim acosta with more on that story. >>with trump supporters lining up for his rally in tall so this weekend. the president is issuing a warning to demonstrators may show up at the event as well tweeting any protesters anarchists agitators leaders or low lives who are going to oklahoma please understand you will not be treated like you've been in new york seattle or minneapolis. it will be a much different scene. an apparent threat the president is ready to unleash the same kinds of brutal tactics used to clear out lafayette square earlier this month. >>white house officials attempted to clarify if he was meeting or violent protesters anarchists looters, the kind of lawlessness that we saw play out before president trump came in with the national guard in condor streets with law and order

white house officials are also trying to downplay the risks of catching the coronavirus at the rally at a time when cases are spiking in oklahoma. >>press secretary kayleigh mcenany even said she won't be wearing a mask to the event you and other white house officials wearing masks at the rally is a personal choice, i won't be wearing a mask and i can speak for my colleagues, i feel that it's safe for me not to be wearing a mask in i'm in compliance with cdc guidelines which are recommended but not required that members of the trump team aren't on the same page if i read the rally i would wear a mask, yeah, if i wondered about and i would ask my doctor even campaign manager brad parscale says he'll likely where won at the event, you know wear masks, yes. >>yes, i will probably be wearing a mask doctor anthony fauci told cbs radio people in large crowd should wear a mask if they cannot practice social distancing the best way to protect yourself and to prevent. >>acquisition of the spread of infection is to avoid crowds. the avoid crowds if in fact one reason or feel compelled

to do that which don't recommend and wear a mask at all times. >>the white house is also defending the president's tweet exploiting video 2 young toddlers hugging one another to take pot shots at press coverage of racism in the u.s. in a rare rebuke of mister trump the tweet which included phony news graphics was labeled manipulated media by twitter when you share fake videos like that. >>doesn't that make you fake news. >>i think the president is making a satirical point that was quite funny if you go and actually watch the video. >>white house also tried to explain what the president meant when he told the wall street journal that he has just learned the history of juneteenth the day the end of slavery is celebrated in the u.s. from an african american secret service agent you're not just learned about juneteenth that this week on that's simply not true. >>all of those who attend the trump rally today are required also to sign a waiver that they will not sue the trump campaign if they get covid-19.

>>in other national headlines. the u.s. attorney in new york who is investigating trump associates is refusing to step down even after attorney general bill barr announced his resignation late last night. geoffrey berman is the u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york and he has clashed with the attorney general over some issues and also investigated several people with connections to president trump. attorney general bill barr announced yesterday that trump is nominating jay clayton to replace him. clayton has never been a prosecutor. berman released a statement last night saying he has no plans of stepping down and will only do so when the senate confirms the president's nominee in the meantime he says all his investigations will continue to move forward. coming up on the kron 4 morning news, the state is keeping a close watch on contra costa county after the county saw an uptick in coronavirus hospitalizations. >>more on that in a min how did kellogg's combine... ...crunchy oat clusters with a touch of honey... ...plump, juicy raisins... ...and tasty fiber... ...into one delicious cereal? it took a lot of branstorming.

enough protective equipment and tess and bill sweeney with a or p says many states are still falling behind on reporting cases we saw in a long way to go to even understand what the scope of the problem is south carolina democrat jim cliburn launched an investigation into the federal agency that oversees nursing homes about its enforcement of health and safety regulations and the distribution of supplies we must ensure more lives. >>well not lost unnecessarily louisiana, republican steve scalise sent letters to a group of states asking why they ignored the agency's directive about transferring residents from hospitals, the decision of several governors to essentially mandate that covid positive patients go back to their nursing homes ended up being a death sentence while both sides are still waiting for answers congress is in the middle of another debate about states granting nursing homes immunity from pandemic related lawsuits. supporters say the measures protect healthcare heroes but a or p says it's a

>>7.17 right now want to check the weather, i'm sure hoping things change a little bit i want to go job you know what will be clearing out but if you had a right to the coastline. do you expect fog through the day but for areas like san francisco's financial district which are just socked in right now portions of marine county and sonoma counties which are also on the foggy side we will see improvements come the afternoon as for san jose look at this nice blue crystal clear skies overhead. >>that's what we're seeing from any of our further inland areas such as the inland east bay solano county down through the south bay, those areas closer to the coast. yeah, it is greatest our team even notice some drizzle on some of our roadways but that fog should be pulling out as we do look at this onshore flow relaxing and that is going to mean a little bit more sunshine right in the middle of your day before fog pushes right back in again tonight it's almost like clockwork we're back to the norm for this time of year with a foggy push during the evening and then your window of sunshine

during the day closer to the coast. you can see here on future cast. there's your fog that will stream back in towards the evening tonight after having pulled out of the day during the middle of the day tomorrow afternoon for father's day you're about to get another dose of sunshine before another foggy push into sunday night into monday morning. after that it does look like marine layer should actually hold back a little bit for a few days next week after what has been a few foggy yesterday and into this morning temperatures in the 60's and 70's for your highs today, a little cooler at the coast as fog is going to stay with the coast through the day. you'll still get 70's in south san francisco down to burlingame as sunshine. reappears later on saying carlos about and you still in the 80's south bay, goodbye 90's you had those yesterday not on the map today, it's solid 80's for the east bay too with temperatures just a few degrees cooler than yesterday's berkeley oakland and richmond staying comfortable but cool in the low 70's. while the north bay just a couple of 90's remain

in vacaville in antioch santa rosa and petaluma in the mid to upper 80's today as for tomorrow temperatures pretty similar to today's for father's day a little cooler yeah and then we reverse course temperature spike back into the upper 90's by monday tuesday and wednesday we'll have heat advisories coming back into effect inland. so there's plenty of heat ahead of us today and tomorrow actually some of our cooler days and are you getting dead a little animation it's confusing with the bay area knowing what you can do and what you can't please everybody is easing restrictions at their own pace, so let's take a peek. >>so if you're traveling or if you live in a different place you'll know which can and can't bring county. starting june 29 so not yet but at the end of the month. they are allowing indoor dining and also hair and nail salons are going to reopen and gyms are reopening also short term lodging so air bnbs in the

reported 37 new cases and one. >>new death on friday. the state added contra costa to its list of counties in california. that the department of health is monitoring closely in fact right now there are 24 people in hospitals being treated for covid-19 in contra costa county alone and over the last 3 days the county has been consistently reporting a small but steady uptick in hospitalizations the increase in numbers comes as the county has allowed barbershops and salons to reopen this week. we asked infectious disease experts. doctor dean winslow from stanford of the rapid reopening seen in counties like contra costa county, whether that concerns him, here's what he had to say. >>it absolutely does you know europe i think it's been a good example of you know how really that the government's worked in a very concerted mariner to to really not just flatten the curve but actually make the kurds start coming down people are talking in the u.s. about a potential second

>>it's 7.26 and california's african american police chiefs are speaking out about reforms they would like to see happen in their departments. doug johnson has more from the state capitol. >>so never want to get engaged in and put money towards a but were you all this time. it took this. these events for it to happen assembly member jim cooper brought together a dozen black police chiefs from across california. >>including the cheese from san francisco napa tracy in hayward to give their ideas on police reforms i believe this group of men and women there

are unique law 5 to address this issue defining the police departments is not the answer. cooper, a former sacramento county sheriff's deputy for 30 years says there needs to be more training on bias de escalation and historical policing problems and he says too much of the current police training is done almost completely online learning online we're clicking a button in a class that really makes no sense to do that hearing from your colleagues talk about it in the classroom is much more impactful than sitting behind a computer also among the group was sacramento police chief daniel hahn. >>he believes chiefs need to have more freedom when it comes to firing officers in making those terminations public our community legitimately doesn't feel that a lot of times that officers are held accountable even though many times they were held accountable, including termination but were prevented from telling people that chief and also called for a national database of terminated officers, the department to different parts of the country can avoid hiring those the history of issues, although chief hahn claims the

they were also there to call on social call out social injustice. the signs carried by people spoke to the demand for police reform and the need for investment in black communities and celebrations will continue into the weekend as well in fact governor gavin newsome issued a proclamation commemorating juneteenth june 19th as a national freedom day in california. >>is also considering reforming its police department in an effort to increase safety for riders kron four's michelle kingston has more on their plan. >>more training in more unarmed employees, bart officials say they are committed to this plan. bart officials say they're in the middle of an opportunity to advance police reform i took back. >>and banned the use of the carotid restraint that's something that's been a national conversation piece and i just to get out of the equation we're no longer use in that bart police have stopped the use of choke holds in say they are moving forward with progressive policing

rethinking their summer plans because coronavirus doesn't seem to be going away for the summer and even for the fall whitney wild has the latest from doctors. statistics show the coronavirus will have a big impact on summer plans. 23 states are watching new infections increase. now 8 states are currently seeing their highest seven-day averages of new daily cases compare those numbers with the european union which averaged around 5 times fewer cases in the past week, the state a lock down a bit longer. >>a bit more uniformly not all european countries are taking place like italy and spain. and really brought their case numbers way down before the open back up again to stop the spread some officials are returning to stricter measures. thursday, california's governor mandated masks in most indoor spaces as numbers there swell. >>oregon implemented the same plan in 7 counties. health experts are particularly worried about a lack of icu

>>some 45 right now taking a look at the weather and the weekend is here and that warm weather seems to be son go this during the morning hours john still get a little warm in the east in the afternoon but point morning to cool mornings very cool yet no sunshine out there yet at least for a alcatraz island where you can see it's just shrouded in the fog in the distance can even see downtown san francisco from this view in the north bay and as for the south bay you're still getting the sunshine but you will also notice a slightly cooler day ahead of us, we're still going to be warm but we're going to be cooler than we have been the past few days and that will be a nice bit of relief from the heat that we

have been experiencing so fog at the coast low lying cloud cover right over the bay and then our inland areas sitting under sunshine already we did see the inland push of fog and cloud cover last night. it definitely felt it cool job into the evening. we'll get more sunshine this afternoon before yet again another push of fog increases into the late afternoon and evening tonight like clockwork very similar timing to yesterday. so you're going to have a foggy start to your father's day morning too. but then you're going to see some sunshine reappearing on into sunday afternoon much like you will today and then into monday a little on the clear side monday we're going to little ease off of that marine influence and that means temperatures are really going to start to soar. so today and tomorrow, yes, they will be warm, but they're not going to be near as warm as next week is about to be so i'd say go ahead enjoy this afternoon as much as possible 60's and 70's for your highs and san francisco daly city down to half moon bay, staying cool and staying a little

next week. james. thank you very much john contra costa counties reporting 37 new cases and one new death friday. >>the state added contra costa. the list of counties. the california department health we'll have to monitor closely because of the coronavirus right now there are 24 people in the hospital being treated for covid-19 in that county over the last 3 days. the county has been consistently reporting small but steady upticks in hospitalizations the increase in numbers comes as the county has allowed a lot of retail shops salons and the like to reopen this past week. the state department of health has created a list of key actions for contra costa health officials to help the county get back on track and those include things like pushing the importance of wearing face masks and getting tested also preparing local health systems for a the surge that may come this fall and making sure that nursing facilities have the proper protective equipment, they need and how to use it properly. also they recommend educating people on the
