7:04 am
restaurants wineries and bars for the state's guidance in alameda county may only be open for drive-thru or pickup delivery options now is able to talk to some residents out here this morning and here's what they had to say about the for the purpose of this covid-19 pandemic and for the health and safety of say the general public. i'm i'm kind of for something like that you know look. i'm i'm 58 years old and not you know, i'm susceptible to you know help maybe a package to pandemic or dividers it might be lights out for me so i say. >>then doing something like that it is a necessity. this >>the morning as you might remember california this week we hit a record toll in the number of daily deaths that we saw with coronavirus a 149 this week now again officials have not issued a word on when
7:05 am
they're going to change this or how long they're going to restrict people from eating outdoors or participating in any of those activities and i mention that again this is a new update that are going to change plans for a lot of folks but all with the intent and keep the people safe for now reporting out here in alameda county reyna harvey kron 4 news, you know rain one of the many things we learned during this pandemic is the need to be flexible. >>and this is yet another example of that. absolutely marty absolutely right that's right rv reporting for us in the east bay problem. >>well in the midst of the spike in cases both across the country and right here in the bay area school districts have the tough job of figuring out how to reopen and the east bay virtual learning is the goal for the upcoming school year the oakland unified school district is talking about reopening schools on august 10th. the district plans on using zoom for classroom, teaching district spokesman john sasaki says the district is waiting for more than

providing an economic lifeline for many are set to expire if unemployment insurance uncertainty. it's devastating house. speaker nancy pelosi says congress must extend the extra weekly $600 unemployment benefit beyond july 31st, but she says it should be part of a stimulus package that includes money for hospitals testing and local governments they really are all connected. they are all of one piece we do not have a handle on this democrat brian higgins says given the recent rise in covid cases congress needs to help americans stay home without losing income to long you're still with us. >>we will need to provide disaster. relief. speaker pelosi says all of this is in the heroes at the 3 trillion dollar stimulus package. the house passed in may. but republican leaders say as is the bill won't pass the senate i think it would be better to do one package all together and in that package house gop leader kevin mccarthy says congress should not extend the
7:12 am
$600 unemployment benefit if somebody is off work from covid should they make more money than when they were working. >>because remember that money is not free mccarthy says the unemployment bonus discourages people from working there are a number of businesses that have called people back in this i'd rather stay off. mccarthy is confident both parties will have a negotiated stimulus package before august in washington, i'm joe khaleel. >>and we have mostly green on the board here for our temperatures 50's in some lower 60's antioch already up to 67 but hang on tight this afternoon. we've got temperatures approaching near 100 and some of those far inland valleys looks forecast. coming up in the country

7:15 am
and that's just one of the many ways we're here to help the military community find out more at usaa.com >>good morning welcome back of your saturday is off to a good start we're levin this picture, postcard view of the golden gate bridge this morning, let's go ahead and check in with dave spahr for the forecast today pay good morning marty good morning everybody on is delightful looking good to it's got to come to a place to hide out a little bit this afternoon as temperatures in london really start climate it's going to really earn the title of being in the middle of summer of july later on this afternoon. thus far temperatures not too bad. we have some 60's in the far east bay, even 67 for any ah but lower 60's do it for most of real estate from a check in at about 56 there 35 redwood city, a cool 46 this morning for half moon bay with up in the north bay we've got kind of a mixture of 50's at this hour. now for the winds will have the typical up tech with winds that go on which is
7:16 am
kind of nice because being on short kind of shield us a little bit. but the winds on balance are behaving themselves. we were a little concerned about offshore when trying to develop here. but these local on shore winds to help out a bit not us a service by cooling but by throwing just enough moisture our way to keep somewhat those humidity levels up a little bit more so so we stay out of the fire zone problem right now us as official statements are concerned. but still the dispute is that a little bit of an afternoon breeze going on speaking of which is going to check out the humidity level see the green that we have right now that really should be covering the hole. they shoreline all over the place it's barely doing that obviously today we drop off those numbers they stay in the double digits at least and we have 30's 20's in spots that's getting right on the borderline they're a little bit these so-called recovery overnight doesn't quite get everybody little bit down on the southern end of the peninsula there up in the north bay don't quite get the greenery there but look what happens and about 24 hours or so we dry out again tomorrow afternoon shore but then by monday morning. there we go
7:17 am
now we're back to normal as we start to get more of that marine layer right up against the east bay hills and filling up the peninsula there so that's what we like to see in the morning hours to kind of ward off any fire concerns. so we've got mostly sunny hot inland reaching for 100 and some spots tomorrow, mostly sunny still warm. but we're chipping away at it with more those middle 90's is expected inland with some 80's even penetrating the base still then for next week we've got minor cooling as 90's inland start to fall in some parts into the 80's even so we'll have a little bit of relief work in their 68 san francisco today, 76 for oakland, 88% jose. when it's kind of modest compared to our neighbors in the far east bay that will be looking for really hot numbers, here's just a little sample here, one oh one in the aac conquered about 194 for santa rosa and again 88 down to san jose coming up a little bit here we're going to show you what it's like in your 4 zone forecast right now check in with rob a little traffic note here. >>yeah, we have a trouble spot over in the east bay, it's a
7:18 am
hot spot in san leandro a fatal crash from early this morning still under investigation. it happened on a tv south at the davis street off-ramp at 2.45 this morning, a driver spun out ran off the road. the vehicle caught fire was engulfed in flames and it looks like the driver did not survive. so this is right between the on and the off-ramp that's the only thing that's close the 8.80 south davis street off-ramp completely shut down the coroner has been called out to the scene if you're looking for an alternate you're going to have to hop off at 98th avenue or marina you will not be able to use davis street because of this fatal crash. we do not have an estimated time of clearing but as soon as they reopen the ramp will definitely pass it on. happening tomorrow, the golden gate transit agency will be making changes to its services ferry service to and from san francisco will continue to be limited and on weekends only bus service on routes to and from san francisco will be cut
7:19 am
in half the transit agency says this will allow more buses to routes that have seen an increase in ridership in recent weeks go to a transit says that ridership dropped by 90%. when shelter orders hit back in march and now at 75%. when you lee says it will take at least 6 months to restore most of its service. many says one major reason is the need to limit bus capacity because of social distancing requirements. another is a shortage of drivers which was a problem even before the pandemic many metro service is scheduled to start up again in august. >>well the giants will have a big hole to fill behind the plate this season as buster posey decided to sit out the 2020 season to protect the health of his twin daughters that he and his wife adopted this week. >>just feel like in the current state and then we are right now and these babies being is as fragile as they are for the next, you know 4 months and this ultimately
7:20 am
wasn't that difficult a decision decision for me from a baseball standpoint, it was it's up to city and from a seemingly standpoint in your own life. i'm making the decisions protect. our children i think it it was relatively easy. >>well busters of course one of the most prominent players to opt out for the baseball season. kron four's maureen kelly talked to fans who say they're disappointed but they do support his decision. >>more power to him. you know, i mean he's putting is his family in his loved ones first and you know in this day and age. and any gain age, i mean that's really what you need to do. >>watsonville resident rob spore leader says he has family trying to make it up to oracle park 4 games at least once a month during the season. he says as much as he'd like to watch buster play ball. he cannot argue with the stars concerns for the health of his newly adopted twin daughters who are born premature 16 game season and give other players an
7:21 am
opportunity. >>which will make sure the season even more interest and i mean how could that happen in 60 games. what kind of care about these people as individuals and human beings, not just people that are out there to entertain us songwriter, a newspaper columnist noah griffin has sung the national anthem from the pitcher's mound at giants games. he says posey brings maturity and experience the clubhouse he expects that will continue from a distance the season, so you need older. >>to the older players. >>the younger players and these are the roads this is what you don't make this mistake over here. so you'll still be that. i wrote play that role for the team behind the scenes is not be enough to play that role. yeah, i'm sure that he will his team guy and certainly the last best are huge. >>stephanie hibbert was a season ticket holder until she moved up to sacramento. she 2 respects posey's decision the wonders about the ripple effect could have not just on the giants. >>the sports i'm still that
7:22 am
says it may not happen again. i mean i think everything's changing so rapidly that. >>inflexible and adapted into each day's news is kind of what's required out all the fans i spoke to say they look forward to seeing buster posey back in a giants uniform, the 20 21 season. maureen kelly kron 4 news. coming up next on the kron 4 morning news, the covid-19 pandemic has created a coin shortage in california. >>and it's causing some businesses you spoke. we listened. tiny tacos are back for good! grab a box of 15 or try them loaded. get 'em now with no contact delivery.

7:45 am
>>for your health one of the big mysteries about covid-19 is why some people who contract the virus have severe symptoms or may even lose their life while the others have mild symptoms or none at all our health health expert karen along joins me this morning to talk about what scientists are beginning to discover about the virus and karen a big discovery has to do with blood sugar levels. >>i hi marty high their care.
7:46 am
i'm not able to hear i hear you, but i just wanted to say that when you are. when you have high blood sugar it has an impact on the way that you. react to the coronavirus so if your blood sugar is very high. they're finding. an association between. association between. how you survive what they did was they had to in china, they looked at the. the patients that came in with the coronavirus and those that were hospitalized. they found that those that came in with high levels of of blood sugar, we're the ones did not have good outcomes and those are the ones that. they predict it would probably die from the disease, so it's
7:47 am
really really interesting how they've linked to high blood sugar with the survival of the virus. karen one thing about the blood and businesses at this is found that people that have that have high levels risk of diabetes. those are the ones are african americans they are 60% more likely to diabetes. therefore they're also the ones that are at higher risk of the covid-19. south asians stay out there up to 6 times more likely to have diabetes they're thinking that maybe it's because of the way that they metabolize glucose differently so. that's the next that's. and then when it comes to being hospitalized.
7:48 am
from covid-19 they're looking at the young and healthy. the young and healthy often think that they're not at risk but if they are overweight their risk of being house hospitalized from covid-19 is very high. also those that have a healthy weight. but they they also think that maybe they're going to get away with being at risk. they are also at higher risk of being hospitalized if they have this dysfunctional immune response that we're talking about and then when it comes to diseases linked to diet. of heart disease diabetes those people are are also at high being hospitalized and having some of the year. symptoms from covid-19. all right karen, thank you so when it comes to you trying to reduce
7:49 am
your risk so one of the things that you can do is just avoid inflammatory highly inflammatory foods and those are the saturated fats. animal fats and tropical oils and also the refined sugars. are definitely things that tie in with an information. so if you watch your diet also try and manage your blood sugar you're going to reduce your risk of having serious symptoms from covid-19. karen thank you so much giving us an insight into what scientists are learning about covid-19. >>we have a lot more and will will getting back to karen in just a little bit we'll try and take care of the technical issues, we'll be right back.
