tracking. i will have all those details coming up in just a bit back to the news. >>all right, thank you very much. rebecca, let's go to the east bay now we're coronavirus cases are soaring in alameda county is the first bay area county to have more than 10,000 infections. county health officials are asking people to not gagged or gather in large groups, especially around lake merritt in oakland kron four's gayle ong takes a closer look. >>the overcrowding at lake merritt has become a public health concern greg anderson in claudia does have seen the increase of crowds at lakeshore app we just have to look outside of our windows. >>and see the large crowds without wearing mask stands. and not social distancing. oakland city officials and staff held a press conference friday with this reminder must avoid gatherings in groups. >>simply keeping to our own households. >>we're small stable social bubbles will make a difference transmission of the coronavirus is low outdoors but health officials say when people gather outside and take
9:33 am
off their masks that increases the likelihood of more infections. alameda county has at least 10,000 covid-19 cases health officials say almost half of those cases are in oakland before heading in the wrong direction at the same time that people seem to be letting down their guard friday afternoon we sell fewer people by the lake not wearing mask neighbors say it gets more crowded in the evenings and weekends. >>another complaint is illegal parking on lakeshore af cars parked on the middle lane we saw this vehicle getting a ticket something neighbors have been waiting to see it's been more focused on messaging and try to get the word out but. >>we're the last few months and weeks that hasn't been working video from last friday shows cones blocking part of the street for vendors who are apparently in violation the city says they're not issuing permits for vending in parks. >>it was also announced inspectors will be issuing warnings to vendors in the coming days at lake merritt gayle ong kron 4 news. >>well despite the continued

surge that we've seen in cases the cdc is now pushing for schools to reopen for the in person classes this fall, but with more than 4 million confirmed coronavirus cases across the country some states just aren't ready to do that to send kids back into the classroom and with many school officials saying that there isn't enough time or money to make the necessary changes to keep kids safe in person. they're really up against a rock and a hard place now the cdc does recommend that local officials consider keeping schools closed if there is substantial uncontrolled transmission of the virus in their area. >>they should and should open if that number were saying i don't know how much improvement we can make. with to 4 weeks to be honest with you i don't think it looks good for day one opening. >>we know that children under 18 hour, less sick, but there are some that suffered terrible consequences if they have underlying conditions. >>here in california. the governor says that most
9:35 am
classes must begin online which of course goes against this new cdc guideline kron four's sanaz tahernia talked with a pediatrician at ucsf benny off a children's hospital for her insights. >>it's not if it's not going to do anybody any favors to get schools reopened for not doing it safely because we're just going to close them down again if there if it's not safe enough we don't have to supports in place for teachers and for families and for students to do it in a way that doesn't drive transmission by would actually worry the most about the adults in the equation which is counterintuitive we always think about the kids and what if the kids are nervous and don't do it but if they're at risk, it's fine. it's actually the adults and the entire school community that we have to think about you have to take a relatively holistic view. kids are relatively well rests i would actually want to encourage families to feel a little less anxiety around their own specific children but actually to think about advocating for the whole community. >>well you can hear more on the subject and other interviews as well on our 24 hour streaming news app kron
9:36 am
on it's free to download your app store and if you haven't already download it today. >>in san francisco, the department of public health announced an update on the mask rules for the city, the new rules are kids age 10 and older have to wear a face covering and adults have to wear a mask in close shared workspace in building common areas and when working in food service and if you are not able to wear a face covering because you say of a medical condition will then you have have a written exemption from a doctor. volunteers from a local group in san francisco are also helping people to get masks if they can't afford them. kron four's michelle kingston has more. >>but the problem was that the expired mass this elastic absolutely gives way so we've downgraded the masks to be a non medical mask so our feeling was if we can get a mass to safely stay on a person's face reliably this mask will be very useful in a community setting boxes and
9:37 am
boxes of expired n 95 masks sitting at ucsf now being fixed up by volunteers across the bay area and given to those in need on friday volunteers were working hard outside of danville church, i'm really happy that i can help people who are. >>less fortunate with. things that we need right now i can ask during this hard season volunteers are all wearing gloves as they add new elastic bands into expired n 95 masks now they've already refurbished a 40,000 masks and they have another 40,000 to go the 80,000 expired masks all have a red x over its original label now know to find the person who will soon wear the mask that it is no longer certified n 95 volunteers are tying knots at the end of the new elastic band to hold them in place a ucsf physician and an engineer or heading the project and both say they love that people will now have access to them who otherwise
9:38 am
may have had to go without it feels good to see it scaling. >>the plan and the vision were exciting. but there's nothing like actually seeing the mass go into the hands of someone who really needs it can to get one was. >>super gratifying and. it's just great to have something to focus energy into and try to make a difference, you with with everything going on in the world right now in the east bay, michelle kingston kron 4 news. >>well also in the east bay, the volunteer students and teachers at the college of alameda are helping families in need there giving away lunches and boxes of fresh produce for free with help from steph and ayesha curry with kron 4 says it mid-june explaining. >>nice we have needles and vegetables hot food chicken rice and sell it on down. >>here at the college of alameda students and faculty are helping to fight against food insecurity during the
9:39 am
covid-19 pandemic by giving away gourmet lunches and fresh produce for free college of alameda vice president of student services doctor tina basket cells says to make this happen the school formed a partnership with world central kitchen and stephon i should curry's eat learn play foundation. we partner in may and have been doing hot meals. >>4 students primarily and then also community members in alameda currently we serve 2600 hot meals and we also provide on fridays organic for this fox about a 180 of those weekly some of the volunteers here on the college campus are still in high school like 16 year-old isaiah cause it makes me feel great man, you know sometimes me and my friends come here grab by 10 meals a. >>we'll go over to oakland us and most of the homes. so it's it's really inspire the other thing about this is that the restaurants that we partner
9:40 am
with us through world central kitchen receive $10 a meal so with our 2600 meals there's $26,000 a week. >>that's that are going into local restaurants. that's part of this partnership and that helps them keep their employees going one soldier was during a time when they can actually open their doors. >>now the free grab and go lunch program happens every monday wednesday and friday starting at 11:30am to 1230 and it is scheduled to continue until the end of august on the campus of the college of alameda in alameda has it made you kron 4 news. >>right now and a modesto hair salon is taking a humorous approach to the ever changing state guidelines on reopening, yeah they decided to make a video showing the challenge is their business. >>faces operating outside we have kay recede from our sister station ktxl with the story. >>we're doing outside here. >>because we're allowed to feel so good. this is
9:41 am
definitely not how you wash rinse and repeat what the intended humor is clear we're just kind of making fun of the situation and. >>i think people right now because i think they just feel like us they feel so good to just laugh like in this crazy tie. michelle rao is the owner of bella salon here in modesto which remains closed. she says she and her best friend cd christianson talked about the new us regulations for we opening salons outside which under the modesto son is not so bearable after hose each other we have to do this we have to do that and so i was like let's make a video that christian son as the hairdresser and well as her client. the 2 demonstrated the not so pretty truth of an outdoor salon i think the support is is probably the best part about it is we're all feeling the same some viewers out there ted governor gavin newsome and the state's board of barbering and cosmetology. >>they have not responded rao says the post has brought much needed levity to an otherwise dire situation this is so crazy we can't work outside we
9:42 am
have perfectly sanitize salons to work and has the latest round of closures continue the 2 friends say at least they can find and share the last or just a super positive and just ready. they're ready to go when it's time for everybody just getting the humor of it and exactly that we're just trying to have fun in the midst of all of this was just my biggest thing that i love scenes and we definitely are reason anybody out of the hose. >>in modesto. >>kay recede fox, 40 news. and speaking of looking on the brighter side of things a lot of sunshine. we're expecting around the bay area in fact more blue skies now exposed in a lot of sun here at san francisco international airport some mild to warm and even hot temperatu welcome back to

the kron 4 morning news, i'm rebecca strong in the crowd for our weather center. a gorgeous shot overlooking a parts of san francisco. this is our camera just a south of market street. >>and you can see a little bit of the cloud cover but look at all the blue skies, lots of sunshine that we're seeing throughout the entire bay area. here's a look at on your afternoon highs if you are going to be in san francisco downtown you'll be at a high of 68 today, 69 for the mission district 65 in the sunset upper 50's for months hair and a grin on a 65 for half moon bay, 74 in millbrae today a high of 76, if you're going to be the burlingame area and then those low 80's starting to pop up through san carlos in redwood city both coming in at a high of 83.
9:46 am
temperatures a lot warmer across the entire south bay zone versus what we saw this past week. we're getting back to normal so mid to upper 80's. that's what you can expect today for the most part 86 in campbell moscow toes, 87 for the high morgan hill and then your east bay zone looks like this inland and 91 in livermore for the afternoon high 89 in pleasanton and a lot more mild to warm spots along our bayside areas like union city and hayward both in the upper 70's, 68 for the high in berkeley today, downtown oakland you'll be at a high of 73. and then low 90's popping up conquered and danville and 91 87 for the high in san ramon 81 in benicia today 94 if you're going to be in pittsburgh. 93 in vacaville today, mostly upper 80's in sonoma and yon philip 88 degrees and then you're north his own looks like this 70 degrees expected in mill valley. i'm still pretty mild and sandra fell 77 and then a much warmer as we
9:47 am
get into nevado and petaluma at 84 stinson beach, 61 degrees. here's a look at your seven-day around the bay forecast. yes your weekend is going to continue to be warm and even hot, especially if you're inland tomorrow, 90's are going to return to us once again 70's around the bay and then 60's at the coast and then once we get into next week things are going to taper off just a bit for tuesday and wednesday and then those 90's returning once again with a lot of sunshine on friday now back to the news, thanks a lot. rebecca, 9.47 and his calls for racial equality continue across the country a topic we don't usually hear about. >>is being pushed to the forefront. >>urban renewal yeah, it was a plan to clean up communities that took place in cities across the country back to the 1950's and 60's but many in african american communities say that plan force them out of homes they owned and in the public housing abby philips reports on how this issue has gone from the past to the present. >>tucked away in the deeply conservative blue ridge region
9:48 am
of north carolina. asheville is a isis asheville is by far the bluest dot. west of charlotte. but even here this summer has been defined. the demonstrations in the wake of george floyd's murder really were different. the momentum is like nothing we've ever felt before black lives matter signs are unmistakable in store fronts across the city. this is the confederate monument and looks this way because we decided to shrouded. >>a task force decide exactly what we want to do it it removing lead more repurpose it. >>recently the city council of this predominantly white city pledge to tackle its dark past, passing a resolution promising to work toward reparations but not without controversy. >>we're not responsible for what happened 200 years ago. i find is wrong in so many ways
9:49 am
i strongly oppose it like people are not the only worry that have been played in america and around the world, but it's not just slavery which the city apologize for when it passed the resolution. >>it is also something far more recent before urban renewal with implemented. >>all down the street for home owners. >>urban renewal which many black americans called urban removal played out in asheville in cities all across the country in the 1950's and 60's their read of the areas that were acquisition bash has and the thought of properties, homes and businesses that were take and so have you want to put it. >>so all of these are part a little bit on by the african-american youth. >>houses and pour are blighted neighborhoods like the one priscilla robinson grew up and where required by the city marked to be demolished or renovated i can remember as a young girl. seeing everyone.

>>dragon from it. is that it's bad it was like a wagon trail. people were carrying cheers, it was a community breakdown. >>black residents were moved out and into public housing told that they would be able to return. but for many that promise was never kept. >>today nearly 60% of people who live in low income public housing in asheville or black though black people make up just 12% of the city's population, a legacy of urban renewal and discriminatory policies like redlining what we see. >>now. is the result of this public house and what could have been feel home owners up and down the street. >>the reparations resolution is vague. but the city council's hope is that they can create programs that will help balance housing inequity and rebuild generational wealth that was stripped from black residents during urban
9:51 am
renewal and in the decades before it as for cash payments the language in the resolution. >>did not directly speak to cash payments. but it did not exclude that as an option. >>that's the part that has made preparations a flashpoint in washington. i don't think reparations for something that happened a 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea that cities like asheville evanston, illinois and providence, rhode island are facing the controversy head on as white people. >>we wake up every day and benefit from the systems that exist that. key people of color at an economic and educational and health disadvantage and give us the straight or track in the world, our world in this country is built for white people. >>it was abby phillip reporting. the reparations resolution not only calls for ashwell officials to work on forming policies and programs to address inequalities. but
