no annualcontract. and now get hbo max included. limited availability in select areas. call 1.877.only.att >>you're watching. one morning news at 7. >>and we'll get a look at those temperatures. our top story, this morning, the continuing heat wave sweltering the bay area has many spots baking under triple digit heat and some early morning last under storms are lighting up the sky providing quite the show get a look at that wow. well maybe those thunderstorms will bring us some really fine red flag warning still in effect across the bay area. and rolling blackouts will continue but luckily the bay area was spared from last night's round of shut offs. >>and that red flag warning is
7:01 am
in place of course because of concerns over fast moving storms that can lead to a risk of dry lightning which could start wildfires. we have several out fires burning in the bay area right now. well we'll have more on that coming up in just a bit. >>but first we want to start with a dave in the weather center and a was staying going to be like in another continuation of what we've been dealing with, yeah looks like the heat wave will continue and i know it seems counterproductive as we get this little thunder shower, good morning guys, good morning, everybody. this little package of of thunderstorms you see here is tentatively being defined still has severe at this hour now. and this will be until 8 o'clock what's driving this huge the 2 criteria we look first hail or and or winds and in this case surface winds. so they can cause some damage that's 55 miles per hour or greater. and we can get some of that with some of these outflows of these thunderstorms now what happens is this rain. it's a lot happening is moisture way upstairs falls and a layer of dry air. what happens when of operate sick, it's cold. it pushes air around it isn't plummets to the ground causing
7:02 am
with an outflow and these winds sometimes being hefty causing that severe thunderstorm warning criteria. lightning of course very frequently we've been seeing the light show in the predawn hours. here's how it looks right now the shot from u c berkeley you can see rain off towards the distance looking out towards the peninsula. you can see. meanwhile the shot of they caught a golden gate bridge still we're battling quite a bit in the way of clouds so these are going to part a little bit for our afternoon. but we still have that red flag warning that is in place, let's get to that little part that's until 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. still have that possibility of some lightning even redeveloping tonight, dry lightning particularly doesn't have a lot of rain with it and can a company with winds. not so good either. meanwhile, the heat it's going nowhere. the heat warning that we have extends off to the east bay's you can see from all of this red meanwhile the oranges or the heat advisory, but that covers the entire perimeter of the bay and up here to the north bay as well. now our temperatures right now these
7:03 am
are nice for these are what will be at noon or anything, 84 antioch as we talk right now 70's covering the east bay remember this is also post a little shower and thundershower going on which called a soft maybe a little but not a whole lot 70's you can see extend for san francisco in a bottle and up to santa rosa force coming up little bit later on we'll have more details in your forecast and more of this heat spell that was with us robin. >>all right. thank you dave and i'm also monitoring several fires that have sparked here in the bay area large vegetation fires, check them out here on traffic tracker we have crews on scene dealing with a large one in the santa cruz mountains, this is hot near highway 17 and bear creek road they are still on scene fighting that fire you'll definitely notice the smoke and flames if you're traveling along that stretch if you're in the east bay we're getting a several reports of a large fire that's burning in livermore in the livermore hills, this is visible if you're traveling on 5.80 near vasco but the fire reported closer to 50 to a one
7:04 am
a rural road and so far that is not yet under control and then for those of you who may live in byron bridgewater antioch you may noticed smoke and flames coming from a large fire that's burning near marsh creek road and deer valley road and fire crews are still on scene they're also want to quickly mention we have a high wind advisory for highway 17 the golden gate bridge and also the richmond sandra fell bridge. so very windy out there make sure you reduce your speed as you drive around the bay area this morning marty. >>well as we're driving in this morning, robin we saw all the lightning had to wonder if it was going to sparks and fires now we have the answer also wondering about pg and e this morning in the outages were taking a look at the pga the map and as a result of the storm this morning and or the heat we have a couple of red dots that are popping up on that map this morning now we'll keep an eye on this we'll have updates for you. throughout the morning about the pg e blackouts. well state of california is still under that emergency order and despite that the bay area was spared from blackouts
7:05 am
overnight. but what about today that's the question was a lot of confusion yesterday over the way that the state and pg and e were carrying out those rolling blackouts let's check in with kron four's reyna harvey who is live in the east bay with an update right now. >>robin marty good morning. so we saw some rolling blackouts primarily in southern california monterrey in santa cruz, those put on by pg and e which makes sense robin that you mentioned there was a fire up in santa cruz now in the bay area we did see blackouts but those were primarily more than likely caused by the weather because we had like you mentioned strong winds and lightning this morning a lot of rain in the area. so the main concern by pg and e and so right now are the days to come. they're really focused on monday and tuesday of this week. that's because on monday temperatures are going to be increasing yet again. also the second concern like we talked about this morning. we're now in wildfire season making sure one of the fires is not
7:06 am
jeopardizing one of their power lines and 3rd because the heat is not letting up we have warmer nights which means there's not a lot of time to cool off for a lot of these power grids and people are using more energy here's what kauai us so had to say about some of the challenges they face and the things that they do to try to make sure that there's not another power outage. >>we have the few positive point that we have some power plant back in care of it. we also used our demand response program, those are program customers both business and large commercial users agreed to. cut their energy use during times of stress on the grid. so we tapped into those today also and we got and with 900 megawatt from that from the program. >>right now i was california now we also asked them when
7:07 am
they thought more outages were going to possibly happen or around what time because if you're looking at monday and tuesday it's the start of the week people are starting work online and people are also doing classes. online. so we asked about that they told us it's too soon for that, but because of the heat wave. it is a strong possibility for now reporting here in alameda county reyna harvey kwan for news and i just wondered if you dealt with any of any of the light me now you're setting up your live shot this morning. >>oh wow okay, so yes, marty just to answer your question and it's such a beautiful thing but. >>i actually called my dad on the phone this morning and i'm like can you google tips for staying safe while out in the lightning and he was just like stay away from polls. so that's what i did ok all right well as work work so far thank you rain to stay safe. >>i remember when i was a kid from isis a sit still turn off the lights turn off the tv don't make a look at the
7:08 am
temperatures and today's highs as you can see it's going to be quite toasty so make sure you stay cool 75 in half moon bay 97 out of 100 expected in santa rosa. and a very hot one '04 in lding down the fort, or bouncing back to school, childhood is always in session. so keep feeding us right with sun-maid snacks. just like when you were a kid. delicious. made with whole fruit. sun-maid.

>>and we're bringing it back home to the bay area has been quite a lightning show throughout the morning we're taking a look at some of the video and images that we got from viewers this morning as you get a look at the lightning hitting the bay area overnight. robin you and i are both talking about what a show it was dry and into the studio this morning couldn't keep your eyes off the horizon we are not used to seen scenes like this. >>in the bay area absolutely not actually walking up at around 3 o'clock i got the thunder 9 saw the lights flashing through the window unlike what's going on. and of course there was i check my phone i got so many messages from family and friends. everyone was seeing that's under storm activity. >>i felt like rain i wanted to call a somebody find out what will you do me a kind of like it's just not used to it right. yeah that's good. let's go and check in with days farm find out more about really strange weather for us here on the west coast. it feels more like we're in florida day figure the oklahoma these nocturnal thunderstorms as we like to say, but we do get this a little bit at least parts of the golden state hear
7:17 am
these kind of monsoon thunderstorms that occur. and that's because on the backside of a height of this was way out to sea and you'll see this in just a second. how to develop, but this shows you the different layers of the atmosphere in a word, the very bottom, it's been hot and dry. we know that but above us obviously more moist live shots going on here for you the shot from u c berkeley still kind of overcast we have going on here rain off to the distance to the peninsula and as a formality we still have technically that severe thunderstorm warning because of some of those winds you've been hearing about shot from the golden gate same kind of you to the gloomy this is not just fog going on it's just the gloaming us from the thunderstorm activity that we've had our our temperatures thus far we're in the mid 70's, lining up the east bay shoreline 84 for any aac 70's up to the north bay 78 for san jose. you know sometimes in the winter we look at this these are forecast highs going on right now these are current temperatures so you can see even with the rain storm even with the thunderstorm going on in this mixing and so forth. temperatures are very locked
7:18 am
to that we're going to build on so there's the high the traditional hi, this is the time of year july august september for that monsoon the southwest develops on the west can't west hand side, usually confined mostly to maybe the central valley, but certainly down to the deserts, it doesn't usually get up to the bay area as often but it does happen and here's an example of that was for us to fly up like aloft. you have this line of rain and thunderstorms coming with dry air at the surface so the rainfall through the dry air. what happens about peroration it cools and becomes a gust front in just spills on us with higher winds which is the criteria, one of them certainly for severe thunderstorm warning. now because we still have that possibility of dry thunderstorms. still with us fire danger thing for the red flag warning for the whole bay area this is until 11 tomorrow morning. that's just been rene's extended from what it was previously and that's again we have a threat still seeing maybe some thunder showers going on tonight as well not during the day today. this kind stabilize the
7:19 am
atmosphere a little bit clouds should break up a little bit it's going to be plenty hot again this afternoon as we talked about, but then overnight again the clouds will redevelop the we have that chance of an isolated shower or thundershower thrown into the mix clear out again for your monday afternoon as you can see, and we'll go back to the scorcher temperatures highs today across the state get a load of this one 13 fresno hit the brakes guys. one '09, 4 bakersfield on a southern california at coastal locations, 82 at l a x where they barely hear seagulls to come by their 86 for san diego a tease for the central coast. back at home. we're looking at 84 san francisco, early storms clearing out 87 for oakland. san jose coming in at 94, let's go and then you venture into that extended forecast has an orbit is kind of waiting for how long this will last highs today. one '04 going on there antioch concord one '02 for livermore east bay shoreline 90's hayward at 9391 for fremont up to the north

hour, this is brentwood marsh creek road and deer valley road that is definitely a stretch to avoid driving in this morning until crews can get that fire under control. >>well the state is under an emergency order despite that though the bay area was spared from blackouts overnight but we're wondering what about today, that's what everyone's asking there's a lot of confusion yesterday over the way the state and pg and e. >>we're carrying out those rolling blackouts reyna harvey is live in the east bay with more on that and what today may bring just in case a blackout hits your area right now. martin robin this weather is unpredictable so right now we're just on wait and watch low and so are energy experts across the bay area trying to figure out if we're going to see. >>another rolling blackout like you mentioned we saw some rolling blackouts primarily in southern california also monterey and santa cruz and like you mentioned robin they have that fire out there so that would explain why pg and e would initiate a rolling blackout in that area here in
7:35 am
the bay area we saw scattered blackouts i saw one this morning out in richmond and that is not because of the rolling blackout that that was put in place or that just happened that might be because of the weather we have strong winds really really hot temperatures that won't go down overnight and then especially the rain and the lightning that you're seeing coming down this morning so again there are focused on monday and tuesday of this week we talked to california ious so and they talked about the rolling blackouts take a listen. >>he needs should keep of people were glued on with that just be everything because we rely on that day. >>they had enough food in there and they had an accident there. >>lives. we'll be in trouble. >>all right so that's not california ious so it's actually a gentleman i see out here given his walk on most
