>>you're watching kron 4 morning news at 7. >>raging wildfires up and down the west coast. in fact it's so bad that some of the worst air quality on the planet is right here in the bay area. i think blanket of smoke continues to hover over the bay area making it tough to breathe. and i'm healthy to stay outside. good morning. everybody, thank you so much for joining us on the kron 4 morning news, set saturday september marty gonzales unfortunately that smokes expected to linger throughout the weekend. it is yet another spare the air day for the bay area, the 26th in a row. we want to get more from days far on that and look at the forecast heidi a good morning marty good morning it looks like we're getting a little bit of sleight thinning of the smoke at least happening a lot of air quality the service is going to be lousy all weekend still continuing. >>with some improvement as we get into early next week because of some other factors are going to help out with the sky conditions to again this going to be gradual now let's

give you couple pictures going on here the shot from u c berkeley we can see the foreground very nicely but off to the distance as the ground fog which has done a really big job across the bay, this the golden gate. and ground fog continues at the bay bridge toll plaza to as well so we have to get the sun up to kind of makes this out again, but the problem has been all of that haze of the smoke has been so high up that hasn't allowed us to heat up as well the ground to start this process. it's a little better today though, and this is what the fog projections are this is not the smoke this the fog that that part should clear out later this morning allowing for the sun at least to do its thing but having trouble getting through the smoke of then this comes back again it looks like late tonight and into tomorrow because we do have a little bit a slight change happening in the weather that's going to help us out a little bit those temperatures we have the upper 50's lining up the east bay shoreline inland as well. 40's and 50's mixture up to the north bay 60 san jose and for comparison sake from yesterday. we're kind of a

of air in the 200's in over 100 which is down from 300 still that's really bad stuff to breathe in over in alameda county. it's the same story in oakland and hayward berkeley you've got purple and orange all across the map and in san francisco, the air is pretty awful out there. now health experts are warning people who think it's ok still go out for long periods of time to take it easy and be mindful of the type of air that you're breathing in take a listen. >>you need go out for that walk here run and think hey you know i wasn't so bad i did ok you get home and you're in home. the triggers. >>he's absolutely right. i actually mardy experience at first hand. i was out the first day reporting when all of this first happened and the air quality was really really awful. and you know you don't really realize it until you get home i got home start experiencing all type of

here today a lot of people of the cloth mask, but really they've just been picking up coffee from the neighboring restaurant here and getting back in their cars and going home so i keep your time outdoors to a minimum marty. >>all right time for you to get back in your car and we'll see in an hour in walnut creek, thanks a lot that's reyna harvey reporting for us from our end of this morning. well believe it or not things are getting a little bit better and here is why it's because the major wildfires burning in the bay area contributing to that bad air quality or nearly contained. the lnu lightning complex fire in the north bay currently and 95% containment. more than 363,000 acres have burned there. the scu complex fires in the east and south up to 98% containment with nearly 397,000 acres burned the czu lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties are up to 86% containment with more than 86,000 acres that have burned and the woodward fire at point reyes national

seashore in marine county now at 95% containment that fire has burned more than 4800 acres. let's take a look at the other fires that are still burning in california. there's the map that shows you that it's a cal fire incident map of those fires. there are also contributing to the smoke around the bay area as well. on the kron 4 morning news, we'll take a look at what role climate change is plane in these historic west coast wildfires. the stern warning to state leaders are saying is the state has some of the worst air quality on earth. plus there's a new study that links a higher risk of covid infection to dining inside restaurants will find out what health experts say business owners can do to help slow the spread. and after the break residents in the east bay are worried after illegal fireworks are set off and trash is burned at a popular park ♪

that's down from as many as 7 business days. just last month state health officials say that at this speed they can be more effective and isolate and quarantine people who have been infected. the state public health department reported 3,000 new covid-19 cases saturday and 100 and 11 more deaths, the numbers are 746,000 confirmed cases more than 14,000 people have died from the virus. here in the bay area, the numbers have surpassed now 90,000 cases and more than 2 1200 deaths. a new cdc study found people who contracted coronavirus were twice as likely to have eaten out at a restaurant. the restaurant industry of course already suffering so much because of covid-19. well now bay area owners are hoping that strict cleaning and prevention methods will continue to attract enough customers to keep the doors open kron four's ella sogomonian has more on that. >>as the restaurant industry tries to make a comeback amid

a pandemic a study by the cdc may serve a potential setback. the newly released report spotted a possible link to an increased risk of infection. 4 people dining out. it found adults who tested positive for covid-19. we are twice as likely to have reported visiting either restaurant bar or coffee shop, both indoors and outdoors within 14 days of infection compared with those who tested negative lorrie thomas with the san francisco restaurant association says there remains a question one thing that wasn't clear from that study is is it causation and correlation or there are other things involved is it just go to the. >>to the more willingness to assume risk as an individual but still regardless are big responsibility here is to protect the safety of our staff right first and foremost and to protect the safety of our customers and we know that an outside environment with a lot of mask-wearing and i'm talking about seeded if you're not putting food in your mouth or a drink in your mouth

francisco bay area has had such a horrible conditions for so many days. it's shattering records. >>the numbers that we're seeing are based on the air quality index which is kind of like a air quality thermometer telling us how bad air quality is it goes from 0 to 500 and its color coded anything under 100 is below the federal health standard but about 100 to one 50's orange, which means unhealthy for sensitive groups children elderly people like that. one 15 above his red that's pretty unhealthy for everybody, not a good idea to be outside exercising outside much at all when it gets above 200 and the purple category that is when it's really good idea for everybody to stay indoors as much as possible. >>aaron richardson, the spokesperson for the bay area air quality district adds that the dingy dangerous air has dragged on, and now setting new records that no one. >>wants to say yeah this is really got an unprecedented period of.

>>good morning welcome back the 4 former minneapolis police officers charged in george floyd's death went before a judge friday for a pretrial hearing. prosecutors say that they should all be tried together because the evidence and charges against them are so similar. take a look at the videos as officers left the courthouse, they were met by protesters who were chanting no justice, no peace among other slogans one of those former officers, derek chauvin is charged with second-degree murder third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter floyd died after video showed chauvin pressing his neck his knee on floyd's neck for more than 9 minutes back in may. the other 3 former officers involved and are charged now with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and

manslaughter. defense attorneys have argued for separate trials saying they're likely to present different defenses the judge is expected to make a ruling on that in the coming weeks. thank you in the bay area, the san jose police department released body camera video from a confrontation and during protests over the killing of george floyd now one of those videos released by police shows an incident from may 29th when a protester tried to disarm an officer. police say that officers formed a line to control the crowd. the protester. this video was seen approaching that line got close enough that one officer was forced to use an improved crowd control technique and push the protesters back with his baton. police say that started a physical confrontation. and the demonstrator trying to dis attempted to disarm the officer by pulling on his baton. in the north bay, the

town of hebron is investigating an incident that involved their police department and a black owned business. it started after cell phone video showed officers confronting the business owner asking what he was doing inside his store after hours. the confrontation didn't end until a white neighbor down the street confirmed the man was the owner of the shop. the city is still trying to answer what led to that officer questioning the owner in the first place since the video was released the police officer seen in that video has resigned. the police chief announced he plans to retire. >>i remember the my body was just not stop shaking and i think that's that's when i realized oh my god, this just happened and really hopeful about this investigation. you know i want to find out. why the resignations were happening why the retired army, the army's are happening. i'm really curious to know know what it is that they found. >>well the store owners have hired an attorney ernie

our way. okay day thanks a lot. well, today's game between the giants in the pond raises postponed after major league baseball announced that someone in the giants organization. >>tested positive for covid-19 last night's game was postponed as well and it's unclear who tested positive or if the giants will play tomorrow. a half-dozen mlb teams had including the a's event, someone tests positive for covid-19 this season. california is typical turnaround time for corona spot coronavirus testing has dropped now to less than 2 days. 2 thirds of the test results are now available within one day and nearly 90% within 2 days that's down from as many as 7 business days just last month. state health officials say at this speed they can more effectively isolate and quarantine people who are infected. and the state public health department reported 3,000 new covid-19 cases yesterday and i have 111 more deaths statewide there
