8:00 am
say he's experiencing shortness of breath and is being treated with a red disappear as well as an experimental antibody cocktail he's expected to stay in the hospital for at least a few more days we are awaiting a live update from his doctor there at walter reed we're going to bring that to you live as soon as it begins. but the president's diagnosis continue to ripples across the political landscape with just 31 days to go before the election this morning. we have reaction from our political analyst michael yaki and tom del beccaro gentlemen, good morning. your morning. >>it feels like we've been on quite the roller coaster just in the last 2 weeks, especially but most especially over the last several days we had a messy debate, followed by of course this now bombshell diagnosis. tom i want to start with you the president of course has continued to say the country has the virus under control of course is famous famous line that it will just disappear.
8:01 am
now he and his wife have it along with several other members of the white house and his campaign how are you seeing this impact the president's campaign in this final month. >>and now 3 us senators apparently all related closely packed event that they intended. in the rose garden regard to the supreme nominee who had it when i think 8 weeks ago. this refocuses michael and i been saying the last 2 days the trump lead rather not have covid be centerpiece of the campaign. but now it is and it's refocuses all their thoughts now because it's very clear that manner in which they were operating these people whether it's likely ron johnson. where the president can be what the models for the country is there needs to be greater protections and so that
8:02 am
doesn't really help the president going there's going to be rallying effect it will help him in the short run, but he's got to come out of this with a new mission with respect to not only for his own benefit, but for the benefit of the country. >>michael someone on the other side of the aisle. how do you see this affecting the president's campaign. >>well again tom and i both been talking about this for the past 20 7 hours or so which is that yes, this is it for the last month or to the president has been doing everything he can the shift focus of the campaign away from the pandemic talking about the looting in minneapolis or portland or kenosha talking about mail in ballot fraud all those sorts of things that have been out there trying to in talking trying to distract people away from the pandemic itself. this puts its square front and center in front of the president. it's in front of
8:03 am
the voters know we can get away from it. the only thing that the president can do. and you know i don't know how she would call it but but it would be like saint paul's conversion on the road to damascus he would have to essentially embrace everything that he has rejected. talk steve mnuchin ago and make a deal with speaker pelosi in a corona relief bill. do the sorts of things that other people who are had other elected officials on the republican elected officials who have contracted covid-19 of have experienced a their own sort of conversion on this. remember that trump is very attuned to his base and his base right now is anti mask. he's in leading and reflecting a lot of that sentiment out there so the question. there's a push poll whether he comes out of this. with a changed person, we don't know, but we we hope so we and we all of course hope that he does recover. well it quickly definitely. >>yesterday joe biden said
8:04 am
he's going to be pulling back the negative ads. let's talk a little bit about whether or not that's the right call to go a little softer just a month before the election. i've seen lots of people on social media saying it's not the right time to pull back. what do you guys think. >>you're to the left is the overreaction you re obama say she wished the president dies and then told her tweet. >>now is in fact continue with it certainly calls around 9 sacks and job, by nature is that way. >>who is actually. so the 40 years whether you followed him or not. was a likable person and so it doesn't surprise me at all that that he's done that sort of thing you can still draw contrasts be bite and i think you're going to my
8:05 am
and i so i think you're going to see that going forward in over reaction last week not be good. the biden campaign me not even him by the left continues to do that and so i think he's leading on the issue of ok, let's focus is more on policy and away from negativity which is and think people need to know what he wants to do going forward. >>i think they're very smart by the by vice president biden again part of his eat those is i want heal. i want to unify and and showing sort of a class act at least initially here by saying we're pulling back in the native ads does 2 things one it makes him look better and 2 and again focuses on negative by even talking about that and and as tom said you can talk about the pandemic you can talk about the 208 9,000 americans who have died. you can talk about the lack of ppe and and vaccines. another country
8:06 am
she's without necessarily the president by by inference. it's going to be there anyway and again biden campaign one of the pandemic befriend center. now it do no work of their own. i think they'll just let it let ride right now in work on essentially the closing case for joe biden years what he wants and why he's a better alternative. the to donald trump. >>and all of this of course unfolding just days after the white house held that large ceremony in the garden the rose garden to announce judge amy coney barrett nomination the next supreme court justice what's the fallout here going forward because we were kind of full speed ahead on all of this. and now several of the senators who are on that judiciary committee are positive with covid. several them were in attendance at this at ceremony here so what's the fallout going forward when it comes to the supreme court justice nominee.
8:07 am
>>i think this is going to go ahead you're definitely going to happen committee. the republicans aren't aren't going to change i watched that ceremony from my house and raise my eyebrows when i saw so many people in such a small arena and thought to myself why don't want to be so and not to be a very hard for all of them, but it's not going to change his friend for donations going to go forward going to get confirmed and i think it's going to happen the the election. michael and been saying this does not reflect well, and they are the country's leadership. >>i'm going to actually differ slightly with tom on this we now have the recent 3 republican senators with covid and we have no idea exactly how the disease is going to run its course in you can have a full you can have a zoom committee meeting you cannot
8:08 am
have seaate folks and at so and if this. remember mitch mcconnell's at the u.s. was that the a presentation as it were of. judge barrett as a number of other republican senators and if that number starts increase at all. if the number that we have to quarantine and cannot go to the physically to the capital. there may be a situation where mitch mcconnell does not have 50 votes in order to move the now nation because right now there is no provision for voting. remotely or by zoom in the united states senate. >>both of you keep saying you know they have that the president isn't and the white house of course is the leadership of our country and they have does not necessarily lead by example here when it comes to covid-19 and we would hope that this experience allows them to change that course do you believe they will though. >>well i think michael i agree
8:09 am
with michael that there's at riuk now excess and given given the importance of the supreme court. i think you are going find that is saying don't it will just be incredibly toned s. so there's no, i mean, there's no reason not to just wanted to i don't agree that that they sleep. we did a reacts president came out and said hey look we need to be more careful guys look what happened to me. i i think that they would welcome that so. they have increased the stress and so i'm not getting around supreme court nominee that would be incredible price for them to pay so i think they're going to you're going to find a change. you know time i would hope that would be the case. >>but i've been looking and reading about some of the republican legislators. a local mayors and city council people who contract covid and then attempted to sort of
8:10 am
evangelize to their constituents have been and then met tone deaf hostility. i have family in rural pennsylvania, they wear masks and they have been they get dirty looks from people at the supermarket all the time still despite what's going on right now so. but you know i think what's important here is that. this does bear out the idea and that the notion the science of masks and social distancing. and i think going to be important. it will be important for the republicans because their standard-bearer because the president. it's now in the hospital. being treated for covid-nineteen to get on board as quickly as possible because it's it behooves them in in their electoral reasons remember there are a lot of senate races senate seats jeopardy right now to train clear clear this off the calendar in terms of being an election issue for them all right. >>michael tom thanks so much
8:11 am
for joining us we'll continue to check in with you guys as all of this on faulty appreciate it. thank you know her. all right as we head to break we have a live look outside walter reed hospital in washington dc. we are awaiting an update from the president's doctor regarding his stat it's rising. the pain is coming.

8:59 am
>>from the bay area's local news station. we begin now with breaking news. >>o'clock on this saturday morning, thanks for joining us on the kron 4 weekend morning news, i'm noelle bellow marty gonzales has the morning off we still have one more day of warmth across the bay area we're going to get you a check of your forecast in just a bit but we want to get straight to the latest on the president's condition, we just received a live update from the from walter reed hospital this morning, the president still there after being diagnosed with covid-19 and after
9:00 am
receiving update from his doctor this morning, there's still some questions a lot of people his doctors say they are extremely happy with the president's condition right now they say he's been fever free. for 24 hours, however, they would not confirm what his fever was when he did have a fever on thursday and into friday doctor conley also would not specify if the president was ever on supplemental oxygen. >>they kind back and forth of one of the reporters there but he. the doctor says he's not on any supplemental oxygen today. more than anything doctors say the president is dealing with that he feeling a little rundown. but he is being treated with remdesevir as well as an experimental antibody cocktail. the president is expected to stay in the hospital for at least a few more days, however, his doctors did say that he told them this morning, he feels like he could walk out of the hospital today. now this morning we do have some reaction from our political analyst michael yaki and tom
9:01 am
del beccaro you guys were listening in on that press conference what were your thoughts. michael start with you. >>on my first thought was that obviously with the present is good news. at least right now that the president does have a fever. the stern the field are very well, but the one thing that was interesting was how he said we're not going to release him right now because we're worried about the inflammatory face in the inflammatory phase. in. covid is probably the one that everyone is worried about because that's when the damage to the lungs and heart and other issues other organ stirred can it can manifest so. there are 2 things that you're from one. they're talking about the 7 that to it is there a manifestation of inflammatory chase which means to me they are looking back at the saturday event with judge barrett as the as the as the time at which the president was infected. so what it means for is between now and probably midweek or or toward the end of next week. we'll
9:02 am
know whether or not the president. we have any any serious complications from covid and get back on the campaign trail. >>tom what are your so from my perspective, the key here is the oxygen i heard them and saying he has been on west interstate friday or saturday. he's measurements 96. my mission is 97 measure my time again to see how it is so you know here's how it works early you get to something like this the better your chance and they got him in as early as possible. i and they gave him medicines that look is a president united states, it's to treatment levels in the world president united states and everybody and so as mike pointed you have to be cautious to not come rushing back out there. because they want to make sure that it
9:03 am
doesn't really get worse. so he's better he could possibly. avoid all the serious complications and be out and and see the people think. >>but it's a president united states and whether it would have been george washington barack obama or or this president they're going to take action. koch. >>going to extra precaution, and it seems like they're they're really kind of holding on to some of the information right they were asked what his fever was that information wasn't given it was kind of a back and forth when it came to the answer regarding oxygen. just a quick look at twitter i'm kind of looking to see how people were reacting because everyone really was glued to their screens when this update comes out everyone wants to know how he's doing a lot of people questioning as saying that that it seemed that there was some information being withheld they're did you guys feel that at all. >>key information on it says oxygenation and why conceive or reality might point out
9:04 am
that this is a process there's sort of this first week where it sort of bills and then after that is where the higher risks comes in not everybody goes to the higher period and has all those complications doesn't look like some first ladies going to not at all the vast majority of people 1990 plus percent don't so he's in a good space right now. and look for someone i've been answering questions behind my concern now for decades. and that kind of position. his job a season is going to be brilliant with the press on every little nuance no one can be this with the oxygen, what asian level of 96 and say that the president's is doing poorly any also said he has some time read. i'm i'm just going put a slight cautionary note on times. >>redistricting interpretation of facts in venice. we're
9:05 am
still figuring out what covid really does to the to the to the human system how it runs its course everyone is different. i mean we've there's a lot of stories out there. clean chris cuomo remember saying you felt great on the sun. his fellow he's ready to go back to work and then 2 days later boom hit him really hard and you start having breathing and his action into mixed oxide nation started to drop down a bit. so we don't know yet they're being cautious that it's right for them to be cautious. we knew more about this disease if we could say with certainty that these things are markers that. i would say that he's out of the woods they would have said that they didn't they're being cautious. so i think we all we have to be as well, but at least. the good for now is at least phase will and. not causing any, but they are waiting for phase 2 shouldn't appear.
9:06 am
>>right and that's kind of i myself knowing people who have gone through this virus knowing that it does come and go in waves the. symptoms some days you feel perfectly fine like they said that he told his doctors today he felt like he could walk out of here, but i do know have personally known people who feel that way one day and then the very next day they're knocked back in bed. so it is it's a touch and go situation of course all of these are really good indicators that he is responding well to all of the treatments. i think the one question that i have for both of you now is one of the questions that was asked was it do we know exactly when he was infected or at what point did he come in contact with someone with the virus and doctor conley said that how the president was infected is irrelevant to his obviously it is you know what his care is what is what it's going to be however i think it is relevant to all of those people that he's come in contact with over the past week how do you guys feel about that do you feel that it's irrelevant. >>well its enrollment for that
9:07 am
doctor to answer that question that's not his job to make that determination and that's for the principal reason. why he said they do need to go contact tracing and figure out where that where this started for you take care of everyone in round ever sense but keep in mind that particular job. doctor that's not his job. >>exactly how the president got it is less important in how they treated. they do want to at least have some idea of he might have gotten it because they needed to trace. the course of where it is in the disease and it seems to me that they think you know they didn't say was the that it was the saturday event with judge merrick you want to go back to one point that that tom made which was theirs the standard of care for the president the united states and the standard of care for everyone else they think that is it is actually something that people like me are going to be thinking about. in the near future because part of the whole
9:08 am
issue about judge barrett and part of the whole issue regarding the supreme court is the affordable care act. and help people to health care and how people have access to remedies like from disappear or the monoclonal antibodies that the president the president got and what that means for for people's health going forward is part of the pandemic another and future to come. i think that's that's an interesting i think is going to be played right now but i think in in the next few weeks people are going to start noticing that there already is some chatter on twitter and other and other platforms about the standard of care the president of course. he should get highest standards of care but then again every american should be able to forward and be able to receive that as well. >>keep in mind that he signed the right to try which was an act that permits people in difficult situations to try things even if they don't have fda approval. so he's been on
9:09 am
the forefront of expanding access to experimental care which he and park on experimental care. >>that's right he they they did say they're doing everything that they that they would be doing with with anyone in this situation. he is receiving all standard of care for routine covid diagnoses so we're going to continue obviously to. be updated on the president's condition and will i'm sure continue to chat with you gentlemen you're feeling frisky just confirmed positive ucf governor chris christie as we just received that information he has been i guess helping the with his campaign and has just reported that he's been feeling not so great the last couple of days and has tested positive as so that list kind of keeps growing we'll continue to keep everyone updated on those positive and negative results as they come in dependent upon who gets what gentlemen, thanks for joining me again appreciate it. well. again
