7:14 am
>>good morning, everybody welcome back the first weekend of the new year bringing with
7:15 am
some rain some adly needed woke up this morning to some wet streets out there a little bit of drizzle far as to tell us more about that high marty good morning and good morning, everybody we have the light rain and drizzle that marty was talking about pretty much on tap and concentrated in the morning hours so probably by the afternoon it will be the leftover cloud cover and a fog which probably in some areas really won't lift much at all tomorrow, we're looking for some better clearing and then some more earnest rain coming for your monday morning. here's what it looks like it looks like we're bit of a break happening right now might even see the sun poke out in some spots early but then another dose to drop south. that will cover or we morning hours and then as we get to the afternoon we'll be left with kind of the overcast and that moisture in terms of that fog is going to linger a bit. this is walnut creek here in the house you can see pretty much kind of a rainy start to the day on the east bay, then back to the golden gate. again with our fog this being kind of the radiation type fog the brings by from the rain rather than our
7:16 am
typical advection fog that rolls on in. we've got the upper 40's lining the looks at the peninsula little bit here lower 50's on the east bay shoreline inland dropping to the upper 40's but this is much more mild than we've been seeing the last couple of mornings because we don't have the clear skies in the dry air let us coal down let's go the future cast and kind of painted out for you what you can expect today. there's that dose of rain last call go into the afternoon hours. we might see couple pokes of sun but most see a mostly cloudy day on store for today tomorrow much much better clearing as we take a break in the rain there you can see patches of that and boom it's all over already starting. basically at the witching hour sunday night into monday, but by 02:00am already the rain is starting and we'll continue it looks like into the early afternoon again for your monday winds don't do much of anything other advanced already to sunday, but they do respond to this onslaught of rain we're getting monday morning as you can see it's coming in from the southeast for the most part the winds will shift around later on, but this going to be way into the future. monday morning. so
7:17 am
we'll have kind that stormy field looks like to start your day on monday. so for today, it's mostly cloudy a few showers concentrate in the morning hours drizzle thrown in there with mild temps mostly into the 50's tomorrow, some variable clouds and cool though some folks might be over called mostly sunny to get a nice break in there some lower 60's, good timing too by the way are sunday and then for next week again monday morning rain and we're looking further shot on wednesday and still more success of doses as we finish off the week that are very very modest so the heaviest doses going to be monday morning. that's the big show. and then another dose again expected for our wednesday today again 58 with cloudy skies scattered drizzle 59 kind of same for oakland in 61 with a few showers san jose again events will be a little delayed heading south twmperatures don't do much most of the upper 50's near about 60 covering much of the east bay coming a bit later on in the forecast have the longer range forecast models for you at the party sounds good dave, thanks. a lot. for your money this morning be sure to check your bank

>>welcome back. we've got some slick runways at sfo but no delays so far this morning all because of the drizzle we've been experiencing dave how today's far has more on that and is what the forecast side kind of a nuisance little bit of a shower rain event it kind of is but that's the kind of doesn't produce any flooding so be nice to have this all day long actually is going to be very very spotty. we have little wave about to roll on in within the next 5 hours or so after that. >>keep the cloudy skies and that fog around but then tomorrow, some better clearing, here's how it looks like stormtracker 4. you notice the heavier stuff off to the east bay and out of the santa cruz mountains but off the scope of this map there's a little bit more upstream to
7:31 am
be had that will be later this morning lower 50's line up the east bay shoreline for now some cooler 40's off to the east bay but not much cooler and upper 40's also up there in the north bay to there's a live shot coming in from walnut creek what roads out that way too. and this is what it looks like in the wide scope there's that secondary batch of rain up to the north as you can see that cloud packs that will be in the late morning hours. so look ahead for today with the sfo in the background there about 11 o'clock taking some rain maybe through contra costa county the east bay temperatures approach into the middle 50's however, again tomorrow we'll see better clearing but we're really waiting for the bigger dose of rain coming our way sunday night through monday we're talking about next week as well to marty okayed a seen a couple minutes. thank you. it has been a slow start falling short of expectations to in the effort to vaccinate millions of americans so far nearly 3 million americans have received the coronavirus vaccine and that's far less than the 20 million expected

by this point. >>here in california 294,000 people have received their first dose. doctor anthony fauci says he believes the u.s. will catch up this month. kron four's gayle ong talk to a bay area health expert about the slowdown. >>it is a perfect now is it is is good enough. yeah, i think it's good not ucsf epidemiology professor doctor, george rutherford referring to operation warp speed's covid vaccine rollout the trump administration's goal to get americans vaccinated isn't a step in the right direction. >>but far less than the 20 million doses projected by january it's not in the case of doctors just being cautious in making sure it's done right just not having it organized you know to move that. >>so you want to get vaccine where would you get it would you go to a drugstore would you go to your private doctor would you go county clinic where exactly supposed to get it and how are you supposed to get it without waiting in line with a million people doctor rutherford adding there is no efficient federal vaccination model for the states.
7:33 am
>>but there's been some frustration, a little bit of frustration we may have over promised a little bit in the short run about the availability and the distribution a vaccine. governor gavin newsome acknowledging the challenges in this virtual meeting wednesday with top infectious disease expert doctor anthony fauci any massive undertaking. >>like the initiation of a massive countrywide. vaccine program. you're going to get some bumps in the roads and some hiccups as for catching up. >>we have a long way to go until the masses can get vaccinated in the meantime you have to assume. >>if you're being exposed to virus and need to you need to act accordingly which again is to wear masks in public place. to stay within your household to big crowded indoor spaces as of december 30 at tracking by the cdc shows nearly 2.8 million shots have been given in california 294,000 have received their first dose doctor fauci says health care workers essential workers and those at high risk can be

coming up on the kron 4 morning news classrooms may not be as unsanitary as previously thought we're going to find out where a new study says children are more likely to catch the coronavirus that story's coming up after the break stay with us.

>>good morning welcome back the question of whether schools should remain open during the pandemic has been ongoing for almost a year now.

and there's a new study that suggests students who have received who have tested positive for the coronavirus may not necessarily have contracted it in the classroom rudabeh shahbazi has more on that. >>children are more at risk of contracting covid-19 at a holiday party or family gathering than they are from being in the classroom and their parents and guardians are less likely to report wearing masks. that's according to a new study led by the university of mississippi medical center in collaboration with the cdc charlotte hobbs a mother and professor of pediatric infectious diseases led the study echoes what we've seen in adults studies with household transmission cops as they also found that children who attended school or daycare and tested positive reported that other children are staff members were not taking safety measures like masking social distancing or proper hygiene. the researchers interviewed about 400 parents and pull the list of children who had taken covid tests. she says because the disease tends to be less severe in children, it's been
7:40 am
studied less and as a result children are suffering is that schools, appropriate mitigation efforts are being observed being at school is actually in fact perhaps much more of a place where child would have the risk of contracting covid. >>as opposed to having contact with an adult who is infected california governor gavin newsome unveiled his 2 billion dollar plan for reopening schools, this week transmissions among. >>from younger students students to students is simply not common. he hopes to be back on track by the spring with distance learning still an option randi weingarten president of the american federation of teachers says she believes kids should be in school too but only if funding is available and assurances are made. >>but the proper safety measures will be taken in hospitals. >>you have those safeguards in place where people are told to leave. and in schools, particularly when you're working with kids. you have to be extra careful what is
7:41 am
ironic. these days is that young kids actually are following the rules whereas older kids are not and we actually thought it was going to be the opposite. >>well now's rudabeh shahbazi reporting for us this morning now even though vaccines are becoming more available health experts say that parents families schools and childcare centers should not let their guard down dave. >>all right, we're still looking batch of some light rain and drizzle into the later morning hours and then we'll kind of taper that off keep the clouds around some better clearing tomorrow but then a big shoe falling for us on monday morning put this all together for you coming up in a bit.

>>good morning, welcome back we're checking out the rio wet runway at sfo this morning but still they tell us no delays despite the storm a day sparser tell us more about the drizzle around the bay. and what's in store for us. hi good morning. marty good morning, everybody and looks like another batch is about to drop south here into the late morning hours before the afternoon. we'll be treated to basically mostly cloudy skies and some cases, the fog that just won't want to let ticket coastal areas, a little bit up to the north bay as well. now we'll take a little breather in all this on sunday and then come sunday night monday boom we're getting hit by some heavier rain it looks like coming our way, here's a little break that we see and then upstream you can see deck
7:45 am
a cloud cover just about to drop south. giving us some those some light rain and drizzle, here's a law a live shot coming in from san jose state overcast skies also that hit of rain will be a little bit more delays so that might be into the early afternoon hours put this all together motion that's that secondary little batch all gone. but we have the cloud cover that lingers for the afternoon we get to tomorrow get some better clearing in here. east bay in the south bay and then overnight here you have it by monday morning, heavier rain showers and that will come with some winds as well. now this also in this package comes with that winter weather up to the sierra for sunday night through monday night it looks like we're into a watch pattern for now when you see this the next step of course would be a winter storm warning how much rain are we getting over the next about 6 hours or so well it's going to be pretty much be concentrated prior to noon but like pick up maybe a nickel to approach about a dime there around oakland, as you can see the let's get long range of these forecast models there we have monday coming in here for us. now we get a break in midweek not as intense as monday
7:46 am
system and then as we finish off the week, it looks like another dose taking us into friday morning. and then as we go to the weekend this is where the models start to diverge in terms of opinions and you can see the general trend is there's a lift here for the storm track north of us which means we'll be in the southern most of this activity will see if that kind of holds together there, but it would mean we won't be as wet as the week coming up ahead 58 san francisco in the 4 zone forecast, 57 pacific also for half moon bay, upper 50's lineup, the bay side but an insulin also about 60 or so lower 60's couple more of them down south redwood city also palo alto at 6161 doesn't for san jose to cupertino 60 along with santa clara. 58 for milpitas seen temperatures pretty uniform with this kind of pattern here light rain drizzle overcast and fog all day, 58 union city, 59 for tri valley, dublin, 5858 for walnut creek berkeley to cool 52 solano county checking a

lot of middle 50's going on here 50 to 54 for napa and 58 santa rosa 57 58 sandra fell looking over the next 7 days we stand 50's territory, noting the rain hits here. monday. now the little dose on wednesday perhaps into friday as well, although the big one will be a monday morning and early into the afternoon. little props and temperatures as you'll notice here by the middle of the week again into the 30's being the year's time to dry out a little bit until we get that next wave and then 40's happening to the coast back to you. well the christmas fines and peppermint patties are hopefully gone by now so the big question is how do you get back on track, especially if you're still carrying some extra pandemic pounds. >>pledging to lose weight and get fit is a popular resolution. but keep in mind that 80% of new year's resolutions fail by february. so if you want to increase your odds of success this year health expert walk joins me this morning to talk about
7:48 am
some my trip and some tips that she has to make the resolutions stick. hi, carol happy new year. >>happy new year i'm marty. >>karen i understand that the first month is what's really important in trying to make that resolution step. >>you write so i say commit to 30 days you know if you can do something for 30 days. then you're more likely to keeping your resolution so instead of thinking 365 days narrowly down and concentrate your energy on just 30 days so small bites so to speak. right in and this is the foundation of those 30 days are the foundation of creating any new habit. >>and you really have to make sure that you get out do it every day and i'm thinking of so many people who want get out and exercise and for a lot folks that in these covid days that means taking a walk or or a jog. >>right and so committed to those 30 days but do it every

day yeah you don't have be as as intense as you would you know on every day of the week, but at least do it every day so whatever you do just stick to it and you're more likely to succeed and be consistent. >>one thing that's important i would guess is to make sure that it's something that you feel that you want to do as opposed to feeling like what you should do. >>right so i say own it because a lot of people set these resolutions because they think they're prompted by maybe a spouse or friend or the doctor tells you to do it. so you're going to be more successful if you say i want to do this i want to exercise instead of i have to or i need to exercise you the power to to achieve your goal. >>that does give you the power it also gives you the more of acceptance to go ahead and

celebrate when you do that instead of beat yourself up when you don't celebrate when you do. >>yes, you'll feel more empowered you feel like you have control over your destiny so to speak. >>how important is it to be specific in what you want to achieve. >>what is the one of the reasons a lot of people fail in in achieving their goals and in following through with their resolutions is the resolution is too big. often all exercise more this year are healthy this year, but it's not specific you really need to narrow it down like okay, i'm going to exercise for the next 30 days and then a walk on my treadmill for 20 minutes, they be at 3 miles an hour. every single day notice tell specific it is versus i'm going to exercise more right and also i think it's important to talk about being
7:51 am
realistic we what you mentioned i'm going to for 30 minutes or something like this. >>instead of i'm going to walk for an hour which most people either don't have the or the capacity to do right away. >>right and also keep it simple because i hear people say i'm gonna bike every day i'm going the iron horse trail and what that means packing up there by taking the wheels off going in the trunk and then unpacking and putting it together and and to do that every day is not really realistic either. so it works both ways yeah so definitely keep it realistic and so it's not a chore it's something that you're looking forward to. >>right so you're more apt to do it if you just hop on your bike and can go around the neighborhood versus you know going through all that trouble. so that's so the take away here is what karen. >>well okay first all that the those old habits never go away. they're always lurking in the background and your

this is a front so it's going to be coming with some winds going on here that will build as we get to about monday morning, let's jump to that part of the forecast of advanced this for sunday afternoon somewhat uneventful the winds today a little bit of a breeze and all that and even sunday afternoon things start to get interesting as we get to early monday morning there you out of the southeast as we hold this discussion right now the weather service has issued any wind advisory however with this possible later on as take a look at everything that might issue something at least for the higher elevations going on in the east bay too for this wind pattern because the front drops south by the way we might have instability with that so there might be potentially some hail with that or some claps of thunder thrown in for good measure with the package of course up in the sierra that translates over to snow as of now it's a winter storm watch going on for sunday night through monday morning. now back to the long-range view of everything we know about what's going on sunday night monday morning. nice big hit there. we take a breather

another one happens wednesday. the spears to be late in the day on wednesday into the evening hours. now the little braver breather and then it's somewhat unsettled as we go into friday in the early part of the weekend. and as we get out of this latest about monday or so still looks like some success of its and they're more out to sea here but there seems to be an r king happening right here as you'll notice we may not get the direct hits from the systems therefore may be more of a drier pattern into the following week. we shall see we get little closer. 4 zone forecast for your saturday, 60 or 58 san francisco 60 day the city pacifica at 57. we'll do around 60 ish to the northern end of the peninsula bayside nearing that down south not a lot of movement with temperatures but the pattern like this 61 palo alto down further south 61 san jose, 58 milpitas and looks like 60 per cupertino. upper 50's cover the east bay shoreline to the south tri valley, 59 close to 6058 walnut creek. a 60% leandro with 59 for oakland.

but just a lot counties in the middle 50's, a 52 valais ho 54 meanwhile for napa 58 coming in for santa rose with upper 50's heading down south now looking further in advance the bigger hit sunday monday. there we have another dose here for wednesday and friday into the weekend here. that's gets more fuzzy as we get further out now. lows are interesting tells us how we're drying out monday after the big hit we'll be back to the 30 so those chilly morning starts particular the far east bay in the north bay too. and then the coast will stay and remain pretty much into the 40's the period. well the christmas fire jim peppermint patties are hopefully gone by now so the big question is how do you get back on track, especially if you're still carrying some extra pandemic pounds. >>pledging to lose weight and get fit is a popular resolution. but keep in mind that 80% of new year's resolutions fail by february. so if you want to increase your odds of success this year health expert walk joins me

9:50 am
those 30 days but do it every day yeah you don't have be as as intense as you would you know on every day of the week, but at least do it every day so whatever you do just stick to it and you're more likely to succeed and be consistent. >>one thing that's important i would guess is to make sure that it's something that you feel that you want to do as opposed to feeling like what you should do. >>right so i say own it because a lot of people set these resolutions because they think they're prompted by maybe a spouse or friend or the doctor tells you to do it. so you're going to be more successful if you say i want to do this i want to exercise instead of i have to write need to exercise you the power to to achieve your goal. >>that does give you the power it also gives you the more of

acceptance to go ahead and celebrate when you do that instead of beat yourself up when you don't celebrate when you do. >>yes, you'll feel more empowered you feel like you have control over your destiny so to speak. >>how important is it to be specific in what you want to achieve. >>what is the one of the reasons a lot of people fail in in achieving their goals and in following through with their resolutions is the resolution is too big. often all exercise more this year are healthy this year, but it's not specific you really need to narrow it down like okay, i'm going to exercise for the next 30 days and then to walk on my treadmill for 20 minutes, maybe at 3 miles an hour. every single day notice tell specific it is versus i'm going to exercise more right
9:52 am
and also i think it's important to talk about being realistic we what you mentioned i'm going to for 30 minutes or something like this. >>instead of i'm going to walk for an hour which most people you don't have the or the capacity to do right away. >>right and also keep it simple because i hear people say i'm gonna bike every day i'm going the iron horse trail and what that means packing up there by taking the wheels off going in the trunk and then unpacking and putting it together and and to do that every day is not really realistic either. so it works both ways yeah so definitely keep it realistic and so it's not a chore it's something that you're looking forward to. >>right so you're more apt to do it if you just hop on your bike and can go around the neighborhood versus you know going through all that trouble. so that's so the take away here is what karen. >>well okay first all that the those old habits never go away. they're always lurking
9:53 am
in the background and your most vulnerable when you're tired so keep your energy up because those habits the old habits still require your brain to expend a lot of energy. so those are going to start to surface when you're tired so keep your energy up eat healthy and exercise and get plenty of sleep. >>sounds good sounds like a good plan for the year karen. thank you so much and again happy new year we'll see next weekend. ♪
