9:44 am
cellphone no delays this morning, little bit of a breeze, though it's even the steam here a little bit crooked now. look at our temperatures 40's up to the north bay graduating from the 30's earlier 50's one for hayward 53 oakland, 50 san francisco, a lot of 40's off towards the east bay. now later tonight with some of those scattered clouds will have little bit of fog in around the immediate they you can see in san francisco. but not much of that going on it's more going to be more of that cloud cover or a lot you'll see we are and the dominance of high pressure sure that's what's giving us a nice weekend. and this cloud covers kind of sneaking in underneath that a little bit of a dirty high. we sometimes say however the forecast looks pretty good during the days at least now tahoe by monday some scattered clouds into tuesday, they'll probably see some snow by wednesday and a lot more upstream as we're still looking at rain here on the home front let's watch it into motion over the next few days. this is our first tip tuesday night into wednesday that's somewhat modest though just telling us that things are changing this gets more juicy

as we finish off the week thursday into friday. a little break with his more we just open up the pacific they're all coming on in over the next weekend into the following week so good news to really work on that drought and build up the bank account up there a look at the 4 zone forecast today 62 san francisco that's a modest high effort at the coast will keep it down to 59 pacifica also half moon bay, bay side of the peninsula lower 60's approaching the middle 60's at that 66 palo alto and also redwood city, santa clara valley, 67, san jose, mid 60's also on the east bay shoreline pleasanton at 6766 walnut creek and castro valley 63 for berkeley, 62 chilly degrees vallejo but 71 for vacaville and fairfield 67 for now, but in rose with upper 60's heading down to southern rim. now the 7 day forecast we're great for the weekend people sunny to mostly sunny. things start changing on monday in may be some showers in here by sunday or
9:46 am
tuesday night into wednesday. unsettled to finish off the week overnight lows in the 30's at first because of the cooler drier air at night clear skies and then warming back up if you're the 40's 40's covers up the coast. well the biggest sporting event of the year is tomorrow and whether you cheer for the buck so the chiefs you need to do it safely that's right health experts are saying you can have fun while watching the game. >>but don't turn the super bowl into a super spreading event. >>and joining us this morning with some do's and don'ts ahead of tomorrow's big game is professor and chair of the department of medicine at ucsf. >>doctor bob wachter a doctor good morning. what is your message to super bowl fans tomorrow. >>really the same message. we've had now for the last 10 months the is still with us. we're hearing about to fall in rates of the virus and cases and hospitalizations which is terrific, but it's still a very high level and so the same recommendations we've had for the entire time you have to keep your distance don't
9:47 am
get together with people we're out of your bubble. wear a mask do it safely per ticket with a rollouts starting to accelerate you're probably within a month or 2 of getting vaccinated and this would be an awfully bad time to get covid to get sick. >>well obviously lot of people concerned about the variance what can you tell us about the variance that we've seen here in the bay area and how worried are you that they are more transmissible than what we've seen prior. >>i am if it weren't for the variance i think we'd be in a decent place with cases coming down as i said hospitalizations coming down. and now 2 vaccines that are spectacularly effective now beginning to roll out more quickly and other vaccines on the horizon, you know the whole picture would be looking pretty the problem is that these variants are out there they moved very quickly in england. they were first detected. outside of london in november and by january. they
9:48 am
made up 70% of the cases in london that's how fast they can. they can move and we've seen that particular variant and others like it. all through california little bit more in southern california, the northern california. but once it begins to pick up pace, it can become the dominant. the type of virus that we're dealing with and there's no question that it is more transmissible so we're now running against. we're running a race but we're running against a foe that's running faster than the one we've been dealing with for the past 10 months so we've got to be very very careful and it's another reason to try to stay safe now and speed up the vaccination as quickly as possible. >>we saw spread of covid after memorial day we sought after the 4th of july we saw it again after thanksgiving. what are your ex expectations for a surge following the super bowl. >>i'm worried about it there's no good reason to think that we won't see it as you say the pattern is there we've seen it we've seen it every time there's been a holiday and this last surge which you know
9:49 am
november december and through january is no question that it was promoted and lengthen because because of the holidays because of thanksgiving and because of the christmas holidays. and we weren't people we told them we said try to be careful and unfortunately i know people are fatigued of this new trying get on with their lives. but the virus doesn't care the virus is ready to pounce when we get an opportunity yeah they say you give covid it will take a mile that's for sure you mentioned a little bit about vaccine distribution and that it seems to kind of be straightening out more and more people will start to get vaccinated over the next month or so what positives are you seeing right now in terms of the vaccination distribution process. >>definitely gotten cleaned up by think the the federal government has gotten on top of it. the state has gotten on top of that i think everybody realizes the first few weeks were a disaster. 3 weeks ago california about 25% of our doses have been distributed
9:50 am
meeting 75% of the doses in california were sitting in freezers that number's up to 60% so it's not perfect at ucsf where at 85% or so so the state can do better but we're doing much better than we than we were we have more distribution we have some of these mass distribution site it was tricky. it took us a little time to figure it out but i think we're going to get to the point in the next few weeks we're distribution is not the problem the problem a supply and so the fact that there's probably going to be another vaccine approved in the next few weeks that will add to the mix is encouraging we've got to then get people to take the vaccine and get as many people vaccinated by the end of march as possible because that's when this variant is likely to hit us in a big way. >>what do you expect to hear from people in terms of getting the message out promoting taking the vaccine because there's still a lot of pushback in some communities about whether it be distrust or misinformation, whatever it might be how do you get the word out and convince people to take this vaccine.
9:51 am
>>yeah it's a it's a real challenge and we know that in certain communities, particularly communities of color. there is there is a fair amount of vaccine. hesitancy but before we attribute something to vaccine hesitancy we should also look really carefully about the distribution system making sure it's easy to get it make sure their sites to get it in all of the neighborhoods, particularly the most hard-hit neighborhoods making sure that people who for whom english is their first language you're not super web savvy. i get my mother got her shot. in florida. she's 85 years old wait in the car for 5 hours in a mass distribution sites to get the vaccine. so we've got to really try to be thoughtful about how to get vaccine to people and then just get the message out that these vaccines are unbelievably effective. 75,000 people got one of the vaccines in the clinical trials, not a single one of them died. it's just remarkable and they are incredibly so the messaging is
9:52 am
there we've got to get it to people get it to them not only from doctors and scientists government officials but by people in their communities. i think will i think we will get there. >>you tweeted just a bit ago, there's lots of questions when it comes to the actual distribution process. some people wondering if maybe we should just give as many people as possible just one dose at least and then kind of weight on the second dose what are your thoughts on that. >>that is so impressive that you're reading twitter while you're yeah i i have made the case along with some others that that you can argue that delaying the second is to get more people their first dose more quickly, we'll save more lives than giving everybody there are 2 doses one and then the second 1, 3 weeks later. it's a tough call others their their arguments on either side. but one of things i didn't like early in in the distribution process with this idea that we were holding back
9:53 am
mask to the numbers of doses just to ensure that people got those 2 on precisely the right day. if you're a little bit late with those 2 because we're getting more people their first doses the first u.s. provides a fair amount of protection. i thought it was really important to get as many people predicted high-risk people their first as possible and if that meant that those 2 came a little bit later not a big deal. the new question that's arisen from a study that just was report a couple days ago as it may turn out that people have had prior covid and i don't mean you think you might have had covid you documented you had covid positive test. i may be able to get by with only a single those may actually not need. the second dose and that's why tweeted about this morning. i think it is reasonable based on the information we have now to say to people if we know you know 400% certainty that prior covid to get the first dose now and maybe wait a little bit on the second dose until we're a little more sure of the science. you may end up needing it, but i think there's a pretty good chance you may not need when when when the dust finally settles
9:54 am
that's true that will free up 10's of millions of doses that would be a terrific thing. yeah, it sure would doctor bob wachter thank you so much for joining his son know. >>what is usually your day those much for you at all thank so much taking part of
