you can stand on one leg for 20 seconds or more. there's a there's a link to diminishing brain health. >> there could be other reasons as well, though, right. >> oh, yeah, definitely part of a kid and his physical fitness that. yeah, it's a really interesting study gets this is the first study that actually make those 2 connections. so they found that when they did an mri of the people that. were tested for balance that they there were some. there was some michael bleeding in the brain as well as little clots in the brain. so they found that this association was pretty valid. >> so the bottom line for for people who might be having this trouble is to take it seriously. and get your attention. but don't ignore it. >> right. still a lot of people that fall. they don't go to the doctor. they tell the doctor. and this is
7:50 am
because of this study it. this is more reason to go to the doctor if you do have a fall because that's a sign that your balance is off. you know, it's it oftentimes able say, well, i just ripped or something like that kind of. write it off. but it's definitely a little early warning sign it could be just that you just need to get more bit. but it's very easy to do it yourself way to see if you need to get medical attention or and maybe more attention. >> on our screen right now are some of the signs of poor balance. when we go over those. the first one is just the most obvious falling or stumbling. you side of your poor balance also, realize this one. stooping with a hunch posture as well. >> but starting to starting to chat when you have really good balance. you have really good core strengths of those must connect her body to your lower
7:51 am
body our very strong and has a weekend. they people just can't even hold up. their upper body and you being. >> there's a there's a test that we that we can try on ourselves to find out just how well balanced we are. >> right. you're right. would you like to do get up like okay. so what you do is you're standing on one leg arms are crossed us your chest and then you're going to raise an elevate the other leg. so the thigh is parallel to the floor. so this is this is the reason for this, too is that you could replicate his test again. so keep it elevated. okay. that i and then just count in hold that position for as long as he can. like this test said 20 seconds or more. it's a good idea practice this all the time. we say you could practice balance
7:52 am
anywhere any that day. >> you can. you can literally do this anywhere. one thing you mentioned is is you're in line at the grocery store at the post office. something like this. people may look at your little funny, but it test yourself right. >> it is. it's just because this will help build the strength of bill postural strength. yeah. so anytime you or i say do it while you're brushing your teeth standing on one leg you know, for sure lowered ventura present you're on one foot. >> but if you can't stand on one foot and a lot of people can't. so. >> you you start small bus. start where you are. and i would say practice when year standing in a corner and then have a chair in front of you so that you're protected on all sides. see try to fall. but you're practicing your that's a fantastic. >> that's fantastic tip. before we go, want to touch upon this and that is connection between the risk of
7:53 am
falling and alzheimer's. >> yes. so there there is that connection is just like this study said. and if you look at the statistics, you know, one in 4 people fall each year who are over 65 or older and then one in 9 has all simers. so you can see that correlation there. and when she fall that just falling. once that doubles your chances of falling so definitely don't take it lightly when you do have these little balance issues. earlier. you're you're not able to stay a stand on one foot for 22nd. that really is a good indicator. karen, thank you so much. and if we should happen to see you standing on one foot at the post office

though, out there for winners not going to in the morning hours dave. >> quite cold at that it we've had some 30's going on up there in the north bay. now we graduated up to the 40's. but today will probably be a little bit of effort and the high temperature department that we saw from yesterday with a lot of upper 60's going on. those in valleys, the golden gate bridge not much in the way of winds going on. but that will happen a little bit later on today. here's the temperature check. i referred to a 57 for antioch. a lot of the east bay locations in the 40's as we see in the north bay too votto. 5447 going on for san jose. and we're trailing a good chunk of the east bay in the southern peninsula compared to yesterday's effort. we do see the winds at work a little bit of the east bay. those are some offshore winds. however, they're going to pick up a little bit more this afternoon. tonight through tomorrow that system dropping south. it's looks pretty dry, but it will bring us some cloud cover for monday and also some wind 62 by 1 o'clock by 4 at 64. and there's
9:31 am
actually another disturbance by thursday that also appears to be pretty dry. but will be a temperature correct or temporarily. we'll get all that coming up in just a bit and have your extended forecast right into. well. all right, dave, thanks live. let's revisit our top story this morning asian hate crimes continue across the country. >> last week. a deadly shooting in atlanta claimed the lives of 8 people, including 6 asian women here in the bay area. we've seen several violent attacks on asian elders. >> in recent months. the violence is sparking conversation now across the country about how to end this type of violence to talk more about this with this morning. we're joined by yale university professor of the ethnicity race and migration doctor grace cow a professor cow. thank you for joining us this morning. you're a native san franciscan. so we'll start here discrimination against asians in california has been going on. >> since at least the days of the gold rush. why do you think it's become more violent here in recent weeks.
9:32 am
>> first of all, thank you for having me. i want to express my deepest condolences to the families and of the victims that you mentioned earlier. it is true that we have a long history of hatred. towards people of color toward asian americans. in this as you talked about earlier, we started with our first immigration bans a particular group based on national origin was against the chinese americans first against chinese american women with the page act of 1875 and then the chinese exclusion act of 1882. i think it's really peaks right but it's really due to longstanding associations of asian americans being foreign essentially. so. someone who looks like i'm a proud san franciscan had a great time. when i grew up there. but someone who looks like me is ultimately not seen as really
9:33 am
you know, i every asian one. we'll talk to will basically have this universal questions that to us. you know where you from and you say it like in my case i could say if you haven connecticut writes to the philadelphia or san francisco. that's not the answer people are looking for. they were not. we need to then chilly traced myself back to asia. now these questions are not the problem, right. it's it's it comes from a place of curiosity. when you meet someone. of course you want to know where they're from. the point is the questions are a symptom of the fact that we can ever really be american. so you know, so station with foreign us. it's very easy to go from that to you know, here we have we're living in a pandemic with covid-19, of course, the earliest stories traced it to china. the pictures of people you know,
9:34 am
we're wearing masks were of asians. an asian americans. you know, the early photos that were in the we're all of isn't, you mask. so it's really easy to make the association between the pandemic and foreigners. you know who or who embody that the disease and carry the disease. think that's not a big job. actually. >> well. you growing up here in san francisco. you mentioned those questions. and i know just earlier this last year we talk a lot about microaggressions and those types of comments that are made people of color, that of some folks don't actually think they're being racist when they say them. but in turn it does, you know, strike a chord with folks. i'm are there any other forms of racism that you or your family experienced while growing up here in san francisco. >> yes. so again, i don't think. >> these are very unique to san francisco or anything. so i certainly wouldn't say of this happened because i was in
9:35 am
san francisco. but you i think many of us have been yelled at saying go back to your own country. >> my husband is canadian. he's a white guy. he's never. experience. you know, anyone telling him to go back to his own country. people don't ask him where he's from, even though he's technically you know, im a and it doesn't feel american, but he doesn't get those questions. so i think owned a grocery store in bernal heights. you know, from the mid 70's, mid 90's and they've probably heard it. all of you know, all the team time kinds of. you know, people making fun of how chinese a supposedly supposedly being asked about you know, we need kung fu again, these these things by themselves or not. it's not in the realm of being spit on or pushed or, you know, being killed. of course. of course not. but they just
9:36 am
strike this tone where. again, we're not really individuals. we represent you know this, this exotic. so i. >> what solutions would you recommend if you had the year of of the to be able to talk about ways to stop this. >> yeah. i think you know, president biden has been doing such a great job. it's already a huge improvement. from the last administration. it didn't help that our former president. constantly associated coronavirus and covid-19 and call a call that china, china virus and so forth said that kind of rhetoric certainly did not help. so it. i you know, representative grace and her attempt to push through legislation for hate crimes and you collecting better data on these issues. i also think,
9:37 am
you know, being someone is a professor has been teaching classes on race and ethnicity in asian americans for over 20 years. that it is really important to include the experiences of people of color of asian americans in our curriculum. and i know this. you know, sounds like a hassle to people. >> people of color have been part of the history of this country since its founding i think if people understood how pervasive some of these ideas are where they come from and how they persisted the stay. that would go a long way. so i know many states are pushing legislation that promote, you know, for courses on an ethnic studies or, you know, inclusion of these materials in history, classes and sociology classes in literature classes. but i want to say really clear. be that it's not just about singling out groups and exotic sizing
9:38 am
them even more that we are part of america and our experiences are part of the american 25% of school aged children in the u.s. right live with immigrant parents. but many of them, you know, are born and raised in this country. and so you know, our experiences are things that every american kid has the experience. and so it's not is it just because of how we what we have some special knowledge of, you know, or of thailand or the philippines or korea and so forth. i can't tell you how many times i've been asked questions about travel to what the weather is like never think i can check. you know, i can for you, huh. >> go yelp, if you like. you know, just those kinds of questions that again, they don't hurt it in terms like a
9:39 am
you know, again, it's nothing like being being hit you know, spit on or anything like that. but. >> it does again, just emphasize that somehow i carry, you know this for this. i have special knowledge you know, it's a little bit annoying. >> well, you talk a little bit about education and the different ways that that students come to understand a little bit more. this type of situation is any advice for parents who do have young kids right now who are seeing these images on tv and asian american classmates a how would you get or what kind of advice would you give those parents on how to like discuss this with their kids. >> yeah. i mean, the first thing is, you know, all of us just want to be treated as individuals. i think especially young children. they might not issues of race and ethnicity. but the truth is, you know, it is very important part of our lives and how we look. partly
9:40 am
determines how we're treated in society with opportunities we have and so forth. so the idea that somehow we can be color. blind is also not, you know, not realistic at this point in time. so i think checking on your friends. it is really nice because it's been really stressful week for many of i'm glad that a lot of stories are, you know, a lot of lot of girls are covering the stories. it's. >> been, you know, really nice cool to talk about these things. but it's also draining on all of here for me to have to repeat stories are to talk about unpleasant things. it's been exhausting, frankly. so, you know, i think just talking about it is is super helpful. and not pretending that race or gender or, you know, lgbtq status. not pretending that it doesn't matter because it really does matter. >> trying times for all of us and and thank you for cent
9:41 am
shutting some light on this situation. i understand that. what you're saying that it's been difficult for you to have to talk about this. but we appreciate you spending some time in telling us more about your perspective on this. doctor kao, thank you for joining us. >> thank you so much. just want to give a shout out to all my friends and family in the bay area i'm a proud graduate of everett middle school high school in the super thank you so much. well, lot. we'll be right back.
9:44 am
>> good morning. welcome back. and we've been the second day of over for this season and is starting to feel pretty good. it is. i tried to wear some bright colors this weekend. to just really feeling. dave spahr says though, you're going to need a jacket. when you head out the door today. but it's going to warm up later in the week, right. thank you. i will in its later today. we're looking for nice warm up to good morning, guys. good morning, everybody. >> a as we can see there, a temper on sunrise that we're getting here with lots of blue skies in the background. so that's a nice little shot to sfo no delays happening this morning. so most of the pictures we have are better than yesterday. you won't have the intrusion of cloud cover like we saw from yesterday. but this is waiting for us on

monday. first kind of thought might get some showers out of it not likely. now for the most part, 46 going on for santa rosa and also for napa, 55 for bottle east bay shore lines in the upper 40's with 42 going on for livermore. future cast winds. we have a little off shore up their to solano county, then they're going to shift later today. more on shore and per ticket. the coast they're going to remain all this afternoon evening overnight monday as well. then late on monday, it's going to fill up the whole bay with 30's and 20's everywhere. now, we may not have a wind advisory with this, but it will be fighting a little bit in some locations. as you know, it's a little spike happening there. this is what we're getting from this system, this plus some cloud cover. that's all going to notice from it coming through. not much the way of rain forecast temp in the some snow flurries or light snow is a possibility tomorrow and tuesday, then taking a break on wednesday. look at the temperatures popping there. we're going to see the same of the home front thursday, better chance of getting some snow to actually accumulate little bit here. watch these 2 waves come on through. there's

the first one there and hoping to get some rain out of it. second one comes drifting by on thursday again. doesn't look too promising. this is the hand of the seasons changing. we get pieces of these storm systems where most of the action is up north and we get the southern trail of that, which bring some winds sometimes and slightly cooler temperatures. we have a little bit cease. all right. with that 61 san francisco in the 4 zone forecast 56 pacifica 55 half moon bay in the upper 50's to 60 ish and the northern end of the peninsula down south getting some mid 60's at that palo alto at 6563 for mountain dew and the santa clara valley mid 60's zone. 65 san jose in cupertino 66 for santa clara mid 60's. also in the east bay shoreline and nearing that inland. no better decoupling with those temperatures later on. the seven-day forecast, too 68 walnut creek 63 for berkeley the chilly spot. we have some winds to that. it will feel a little chilly at 6169 fairfield. meanwhile, 67 napa
