9:47 am
story organizing work shortly after her release from the light attention center in arizona in 2018 and leading up and to her asylum hearing in december 2018 and do this film are really trying to dismantle the mess that the good immigrant first that immigrant and really put the blame back on this racist immigration system that continues to criminalize black and brown people and cage that meant for profit detention centers and presidents. and we really want to highlight that even though our administration has changed. this has not which i think a lot of people don't necessarily realize, you know, they think ok, someone new is in the white house. this is going to be a completely different a game over here. but that's not necessarily how ays out of the 100 year described as. >> an unapologetic immigrant who is a force to reckon with a past mistake as you are facing deportation. can you share with us what that mistake was and whereour fight against deportation is right now. >> yes, i can't thank you, so
9:48 am
yes, i like to really talk about when we talk about this mistake, i mean, i like to think lake. a lot of so we have a justice system supposedly driving and criminal justice system. i was actually on probation right for for what i plead guilty to, which was a passion million charge and i think we want to talk about this in one or more lies that because that's that's what's, you know, put into prisons and jails people nonviolent drug offenses or whatever. but i think at the moment right now it's time to talk about the justice system being over sentencing black and brown people are right. i grew up in arizona place where it's extremely, you know, the show me your papers. last rites. i think we want to really talk about how the system itself, the immigration system is actually interrupting the support on court justice system. right. i was picked up by when i was on probation and they interrupted that right. and i've been actually fighting for almost 1010, years. a whole decade for i up after marrying a dui. right. and i think, you know, you
9:49 am
know, really want to criminalize that. and i want to push back on that because i also to deserve dignity and respect after i've already, you know, moved past might might know whatever happened in my past. i think white people, for example, get to do that. you know, i saw people in jail do 24 hours right along with their lives while i'm still a decade later still being hunted. i'm a great distance, of and and again, separating families in this happening. daily and it's been happening since 1996 94 week. use laws that were that were used in the criminal justice system to started to mount use of integration and now getting not citizens to go through a pension system twice. >> where does your fight against deportation stand right now. so again, we're not giving up as organizers. we are trying to shift, you know, the question to a question that, you know what you can do partition policing right here on the cries of abolishing ice. i think. >> press is still showing this story. my deportation case where appealing it right you know, we're just going to the wave of appeals but also.
9:50 am
organizing and being created at the local level to see what we can do to also on, you kind of get you some charges. the post conviction relief which is no going back to some of some of these charges and kind of like figuring. now, if there's other race to get out of deportation right to actually get ice to get their foot off my neck and we are see one of white that, you know, they need to stop deporting me, stop criminalizing ice is only here to target the porch and incarcerated. and we understand it's all based on not criminalizing people like myself. it's a different target. every time, right. the people that are filling up. the jails are not are the people that we constantly try to vilify. it's, you know, people like myself that. didn't become citizens. i was a legal permanent residents. so there's nothing, you know, that protects even residents here. so we're not talking just about citizenship protecting people. it's about something, the policing, the harassment, young one reddit rhetoric that allows this you know, these violent to continue to happen. why did you think it was important to share always journey.
9:51 am
>> actually came across a petition asking for the release have that from eli detention in 2018. >> and immediately. you know, i looked into her story and who she and i just was drawn to her as a person who, you know, she is a resilient person but she's also been through a lot, right. and we're both saying we really need to put this plane back on the system. right. and even though she may have made a mistake this any other person who might be documented or my the way it would have cost them maybe 24 hours in jail or probation. it would have than 2 years detentions in the detention center prison. so i really wanted to show people that you know, even if you make this mistake there should be no, there's a about who is deserving to be here right. the story really shows that.
9:52 am
and, you know, i really wanted to show somebody who is complex and is unapologetic about who she and so we ended up first they was still and it just in the detention center on the phone and then we ended up doing a radio show for npr's latino usa feature on and from we decide to make a film. so that's where their >> well, the is going to be shown at a couple of different festivals. as i mentioned, both of those festivals are coming up. the aspen shorts fest actually starts on tuesday. april 6, the san francisco film fest is the following week. you're a bay area from berkeley. what was it like when you found out that your film was going to be showcased here at home at the san francisco film fast. >> was amazing news. you know, growing up in the is the go
