happened instead is it was a magnitude 4.7 and so if you have a bigger earthquake. more people that went into getting alerted. so it's likely that more people receive the alerts. the should have. but. that's actually in some ways better than people not getting an alert when they should have right. and the idea is getting an alert with potentially allow people to practice protected action such as drop cover and hold on. so it just it kind of provides an opportunity for for people to learn how to use the system better. this daly city resident says that explanation works for it was definitely something that kind of alarming. but i'm happy that it worked. >> haaziq madyun kron 4 news. >> so if you're looking for the latest up today. quake information. all you have to do is scan the qr code that's on your screen and it will take. we take you directly to our quake page and it's filled with resources. so just scanned the image that you see

season has been starting earlier and earlier with little rain and dry fuel. many are fearing another rash of record breaking wildfires for this year. so a lot of people are asking what can we do to stop this cycle. some say we might have to start small richard sharp shows us why firefighting drones might be one solution. >> a fire detecting drone spots most fun to take too another drone liftoff. >> it quickly finds the fire and dropped chemical into the flames, putting them out. a successful test. but this fire small right. every wildfire start small. and if you could only get there fast enough. you have a shot. >> at solving the problem mets will brody is one of the man behind the rain system. it's a network of drones that can spot fires when they are small and put them out or dramatically, slow them down until the firefighters can get their video as of one or 2 jones. >> but it could be multiple drones go to the same location that once exactly it when it's
7:46 am
actually deployed. >> there is a network of these drones throughout a region that all respond to an ignition. it's not a traditional firefighting tool, but many believe it's past time to think outside the box particular has seen record set in broken in less than 12 months time. mcneil is the fire chief in dixon and has almost 30 years of firefighting under his belt. we need new tools. we need to embrace whatever technology is out there. chief mcneil like the rain system because it's adaptable. any region, any fuel type. any terrain. i thought you would ask us, for example, brody punches. the numbers for sacramento square miles fuel type fog ruffian more. i estimate the order southwest of hits that there be around 16 drones to contain at any ignition within approximately 8 minutes in the foothills of the sierra that equation would be different. some areas will need more drones. others less. every fire engine isn't the same. we specialize the equipment to
7:47 am

8:45 am
coming our way. so you get a little flavor summer come in the next couple of days here to do a little. >> curse of taste of that before we cool back off again and with addition of spring, maybe some showers in the following weekend. let's hope sfo. we have some blue skies off in the background. there are the numbers for you. the 50's pretty much restricted around the immediate bay, even vallejo jumping ahead at 6371 antioch of livermore still 57 long with pleasanton. you can see. all right. so for tahoe in the next couple of days. 66 monday. tuesday at 70. that's the heat spike. they're going to feel that melting hopefully will. so that water in the reservoirs going off the store. some of that here, the offshore winds that we have. you can see the geography pretty much expected off to the east bay a little bit of a coastal breeze happening at half moon bay in san francisco. that will keep temperatures suppressed a little bit and that's why the santa cruz mountains are not in the red flag warning north. the peninsula sets. but the only area the bait not directly impacted anywhere. this is what i was mentioning. it's kind of exciting to see this. but and sometimes we get
8:46 am
teased by this. but by the end of this week in the following weekend. things thicken up in. but we have some moisture out to sea here. hopefully would be nice just to get some passing showers here moisten up the ground level here a little bit checking things out. your 4 zone forecast. the saturday we'll see about 75 going on san francisco. so a little bit of influence from the offshore flow pattern, but down south more 60's at the immediate coast. half moon bay at 62 usually with an offshore when those numbers will pop too. lower 70's going on along the bay shoreline of the peninsula to the south. the 80's start to pop up here. 82 redwood city also palo alto in mountain view, santa clara valley approaching middle 80's here. morgan hill about 86. we've got to be for for santa clara. 84 also cupertino. look at this in the east bay shoreline you've got lower to middle 80's. don't forget with an offshore wind comes over the east bay hills. a little bit of compression happens here along the east bay shoreline as it comes over your head behind you now overnight. sometimes you a little bit of a breeze. so
8:47 am
that will cool temperatures back off increase the humidity levels a little bit. but today san leandro 85 pretty much the same of the east bay hills just drier upper 80's to be found. maybe a 19 year. they're hiding out that we see that in vacaville and also fairfield 87 going on for napa and sonoma and 88 for santa rosa with more of those lower to middle 80's down south 70 forecast. here's the heat spike early into next week. it's back to the lower 90's dropping to the 70's by the end of this week maybe we'll get some rain showers out of that 70's and for the bay and we'll go actually in the 50's as we approach the coached. let's get to a developing story this morning, a large chinese rocket is plummeting back to earth. right now. it's expected to crash land on earth in a cup and a few hours. maybe tonight. yeah. the big question everyone is wondering where will this thing land. the pentagon says an exact location isn't going to able to be pinpointed. >> until within hours of its re entry. so joining us now to
8:48 am
give us a better idea about what exactly is going on up there in space is the director of mission operations over at the u c berkeley space sciences lab be d, thank you so much for joining us. a lot of the articles that i'm seeing are kind of calling this an out of control rocket. is that of fair to say. >> it is actually a fair salute. let me back up and provide you a little bit of so this particular rocket was launched on april 29th out of china. it actually contained is it's a little part of the new chinese space station. so china is attempting to put up the space station much like the ones that the americans europeans and russians of in common. so what is odd concerning about chinese. the chinese space program is that unlike other rocket launchers, especially in the u.s. russia, europe. etcetera, they purposely decided to not put in the time and engineering effort into controlling their first stage reentry. so what
8:49 am
that means is a rocket goes up and it's usually in 2 stages. the first stage is what typically falls back down to earth and the second stage is what takes your payload into orbit, whether it's a space station, the space craft, whatever most rock manufactures. we'll all watch and sectors outside of china. >> engineer into the rocket utility to control the descent and crasheinto the ocean. we're crash it somewhere where they want one purpose china forgo that capability and they said, you know what. we don't have the time and the energy and the to make that effort. we want to go fast. so we're going to design a rocket such that it randomly comes down wherever. i've read that china's space program has been called irresponsible and would you agree with that. >> i mean, i would i mean, this particular launch came out of an island off the coast of so at least that's slightly more responsible in the sense that the comparison is before
8:50 am
they launched many of their rockets from the inland launch site on in the sichuan province. and and this one is very concerning because they're the first stage would randomly land somewhere over a chinese farms or villages. i think some people estimated in the u.s. intelligence community of estimated. >> that perhaps up to a 100 chinese citizens have died over the no, that's not official, of course, because numbers are released. you know, they're the rocket parts. no rain down on on farms and villages. you know, they've definitely made a conscious decision to speed. growth of their space program over safety measures that in the u.s. we take for granted. yeah. so it will be. so you're saying this is happened kind of before, but it's all always kind of fallen over in china. and now this one we're not really necessarily sure exactly where it might land. >> exactly the same rocket actually the same line of rocket launched a few weeks or
8:51 am
months ago. and also of course, came down in control and it luckily mostly came down over the atlantic ocean with some degree ongoing close to the ivory coast. and you know, we may end up having this conversation again several times because there's potentially up to 11 more launches of this beautiful and the upcoming months and years and all of their first stages will have random reentry is just like this. >> i've read that this crash landings expected in sudan around 08:45pm tonight. but give or take 16 hours. is that right. >> it is actually not accurate right it could be that it could be. that's what happens. that here's what i can tell with a little bit of certainty. first of all, let me not bury the lead. any further if any of your viewers are in california. they you know, have a sigh of relief. they will not be in the debris. okay. could to them. we do know is that what we do know is that it is likely that this rocket will re enter between around 04:00pm pacific in around 02:00am pacific
8:52 am
time tonight. the only parts of the u.s. that are still not clear is madge. and if you draw in pencil line between. west texas maryland or new jersey. okay. if you're along that bin pencil line. you're not clear yet. likewise, if you live anywhere from just south of tampa to just north of orlando and you draw in pencil line across florida. you're not yet clear. you could be clear later today, but you're not yet here. those are the only parts of the u.s. that are still have the potential to be in the debris field. that's a lot of area and potentially a lot of people involved. >> it absolutely is there a larger parts of spain. for example, on saudi arabia. india and parts of southeast as a that also have a higher probability. and of course it goes without saying with the population density there is. so i should back up by saying that, you know, there's a very
8:53 am
small chance of this actually gets any populated area. the vast majority of time something like this ends up in ocean just because, you know the earth is primarily ocean. however, if you live in one of those areas that we just mentioned. you definitely don't have a non 0, a possibility something >> and is i mean, it is possible that that this debris burns up before it even enters earth. correct. >> absolutely. so that the rocket we're talking about. it's about 22 metric tons. it's it's likely that by the time it gets through the majority of atmosphere. about half of that are a little bit more than half that will be burned up. but then you still have around on 9 to 10 metric tons of stuff that will not burn up in knots. the degree folks are worried and so, you know, usually we are aware that manifests itself and i witnessed one of these firsthand is that you see a fireball her, you know, on your 5 to 10 seconds. and then after that. >> you see a bunch of smoky
8:54 am
debris raining down like shrapnel on ross, wherever you're brown track its. >> scary haha really is i think you so much for setting us straight and give you some more information on this it is a strange phenomenon. and and it's the first of many as you were saying. >> yeah, absolutely no, i'm i'm happy to explain this further. your viewers. all right. thank you so much.
8:57 am
>> well, here's a great idea. from other states happening tomorrow. the skystar observation wheel at golden gate park is offering free tickets for moms on mother's day so the moms can redeem their free tickets in person tomorrow. what a great way to spend part of the day. i mean, and then you can just roam around the park. you know what a wonderful mother's day to have. all right. hey, stick with us on in the next hour from 4 morning news, a red flag warning is in effect. >> for north and east bay counties. we are live up in managing type 2 diabetes? you're on it. you may think you're doing all you can to manage type 2 diabetes and heart disease but could your medication do more to lower your heart risk? jardiance can reduce the risk of cardiovascular death for adults who also have known heart disease. so, it could help save your life from a heart attack or stroke. and jardiance lowers a1c. jardiance can cause serious side effects including dehydration, genital yeast or urinary tract infections,

in the last 5 years in particular has has seen record set in broken in less than 12 months. todd mcneal is the fire chief in dixon and has almost 30 years of firefighting under his belt. we need new tools. we need to embrace whatever technology is out there. chief mcneil like the rain system because it's adaptable. any region, any fuel type. any terrain. i thought you ask us, for example, brody punches. the numbers for sacramento square miles fuel type ruffian more. i estimate the order southwest of hits that there be 16 drones to contain at any ignition within approximately 8 minutes in the foothills of the sierra that equation would be different. some areas will need more drones. others less. every fire engine isn't the same. we specialize the equipment to the job at hand. the aircraft is the same. even the type of fire suppression agent. the drone would carry could be different. we are moving towards an ultra-high pressure liquid solution, retardant currently it's a key to activate a dry chemical now it's important to know macneil

good morning, everybody. we are dealing with a very dry scenario going on today and tomorrow. you're noticing it more today, though. but. >> those offshore winds will be with us all weekend long, beautiful shots that we get. here's a cellphone. no delays happening this morning and upstream. there's a little bit of a hope. it's kind of a tease but a little bit of a hope we might get some, although not a lot. maybe some light rain showers by the end of next week. now and they fall in the weekend like that. but at help moisten up the lower levels of the atmosphere that's something we could certainly do. let's go check out our maps. if we could. thank temperatures check in right now in the 60's and the 70's. we got the 70's up here in the north bay 74 for antioch. livermore comes in at 66. now this is early in the morning. but these numbers really started to move. we didn't start from a very low point to begin with because of the air circulating around the lot 66 for monday, tuesday at 70. we've got some melting going on up there. but this is what i was talking about. get to the end of the weekend. things look kind of interesting, maybe some showers into next weekend. we could certainly use that. now

there's a little chance, maybe a bit. we'll see as we start to get a little closer zip in your 4 zone forecast checking out 75 san francisco 67 daly city, half moon bay at 62. we'll do some 70's along the bay side of the peninsula, upper 80's to the south. now palo alto mountain view in redwood city. all about 82 mid-eighties or approaching that for much of the south bay. but because of those offshore winds during the day. east bay shoreline warming up to the lower to middle 80's tri valley upper 80's 88 going on for walnut creek 89 for concord and 75 to check in for ballet. 93 have it for a vacaville and also fairfield 87 for napa rose and we'll do some of those 80's heading down south. now we have a heat spike early next week. it looks like so return to some wore those 90's. but on the flip side, as we finish off the week temperatures fall. hey, we get an onshore wind and also maybe a little chance in spring showers. let's hope.

let's get to a developing story this morning, a large chinese rocket is plummeting back to earth. right now. it's expected to crash land on earth and a cut in a few hours. maybe tonight. yeah. the big question everyone is wondering where will this thing land. the pentagon says an exact location isn't going to able to be pinpointed until within hours of its re entry. so joining us now to. >> give us a better idea about what exactly is going on up there in space is the director of mission operations over at the u c berkeley space sciences lab be d, thank you so much for joining us. a lot of the articles that i'm seeing are kind of calling this an out of control rocket. is that of fair to say. >> it is actually a fair salute. let me back up and provide you a little bit of context. so this particular rocket was launched on april 29th out of china. it actually contained is it's a little part of the new chinese space station. so china is attempting to put up the space station much like the ones that the americans europeans
9:48 am
and in common. so what is odd and in concerning about chinese. the chinese space program is that unlike other rocket launchers, especially in the u.s. russia, europe. etcetera, they purposely decided to not put in the time and engineering effort into controlling their first stage reentry. so what that means is a rocket goes up and it's usually in 2 stages. the first stage is what typically falls back down to earth and the second stage is what takes your payload into orbit, whether it's a space station space, craft, whatever most rock manufacturers will all walk and sectors outside of china. >> engineer into th rocket. you believe you to control the descent and crashed into the ocean. we're crash it somewhere where they want one purpose china forgo that capability and they said, you know what, we don't have the time and the energy and the to make that effort. we want to go fast. so we're going to design a rocket such that it randomly comes down wherever.
9:49 am
i've read that china's space program has been called irresponsible and would you agree with that. >> i mean, i would do. i mean, this particular launch came out of an island off the coast of china. so at least that slightly more responsible in the sense that the comparison is before they launched many of their rockets from inland launch site on in the sichuan province. and and this one is very concerning because they're the first stage would randomly land somewhere over a chinese farms or villages. i think some people estimated in the u.s. intelligence community of estimated. >> that perhaps up to a 100 chinese citizens have died over the no, that's not official, of course, because numbers are released. you know, they're the rocket parts. no rain down on on farms and villages. you know, they've definitely made a conscious decision to growth of their space program over
9:50 am
safety measures that in the u.s. we take for granted. yeah. >> so it's ok, so you're saying this is happened kind of before, but it's all always kind of fallen over in china. and now this one we're not really necessarily sure exactly where it might land. >> exactly the same rocket actually the same line of rocket launched a few weeks or months ago. and also of course, came down in control and it luckily mostly came down over the atlantic ocean with some degree. i'm going close ivory and you know, we may end up having this conversation again several times because there's potentially up to 11 more launches of this beautiful and the upcoming months and years and all of their first stages will have random reentry is just like this. >> i've read that this crash landings expected in sudan around 08:45pm tonight. but give or take 16 hours. is that right. >> it is actually noaccurate right it could be that it could be. that's what happens. that here's what i can tell with a little bit of
9:51 am
certainty. first of all, let me not bury the lead. any further if any of your viewers are in california. they you know, have a sigh of relief that they will not be in the debris. okay. good to know. you do know is that what we do know is that it is likely that this rocket will re enter between around 04:00pm pacific time around 02:00am pacific time tonight. the only parts of the u.s. that are still not clear is madge. and if you draw in pencil line between. west texas maryland or new jersey. okay. if you're along that bin pencil line. you're not clear yet. likewise, if you live anywhere from just south of tampa to just north of orlando and you draw in pencil line across florida. you're not yet clear. you could be clear later today, but you're not yet there. those are the only parts of the u.s. that are still have the potential to be in the debris field. that's a lot of area and potentially a lot of people involved.
9:52 am
>> it absolutely is there a larger parts of spain, for example, on saudi arabia. india and parts of southeast asia that also have a higher probability. and of course it goes without saying with the population density there is. so i should back up by saying that, you know, there's a very small chance of this actually hits any populated area. the vast majority of time something like this ends up in ocean just because, you know, the earth is primarily ocean. however, if you live in one of those areas that we just mentioned. you definitely don't have a non 0, a possibility something >> and is i mean, it is possible that that this debris burns up before it even enters earth. correct. >> absolutely. so that the rocket we're talking about. it's about 22 metric tons. it's it's likely that by the time it gets through the majority of atmosphere. about half of that are a little bit more than half that will be burned up. but then you still
9:53 am
have around on 9 to 10 metric tons of stuff that will not burn up in knots. the degree folks are worried and so, you know, usually we are aware that manifests itself an eye witness. one of these firsthand is that you see a fireball her, you know, on your 5 to 10 seconds. and then after that. >> you see a bunch of smoky debris raining down like shrapnel ross. wherever your brand tactics. >> scary. haha really is i think you so much for setting us straight and give you some more information on this it is a strange phenomenon. and and it's the first of many as you were saying. >> yeah, absolutely no, i'm i'm happy to explain this further to your viewers. all further to your viewers. all right. thank you so much. at chewy, we know walks are made better with our furry friends. and we're here to make those walks easy.
