rosa. but you'll be climbing later today. our forecast calls for morning clouds fog and hot, though, going on 70's coast, 80's bay 90's happening in la nice little tidy way of getting everybody involved here for memorial day. very hot 100 plus well, inland and then for 90's, for parts of the bay 70's at the coast going on. so beautiful day in terms of activity. and then for the week ahead, mostly sunny for the bay. those coastal clouds back again, lingering through much of the day and 60's for the coast 70's for the bay 80's inland so it's going remain pretty warm. still going on for a lot of those inland valleys now around the immediate. they've got 74 going on san francisco. that's a big jump from yesterday's. you'll feel it 76 going on for oakland. 87 san jose, which is still kind of modest, of course, or 4 zone forecast. we'll check in the santa clara valley. and so but well inland, those numbers will be into the 90's and approaching near by tomorrow. look at that. santa rosa, not waiting 99 today 96 antioch in concord, 93 for livermore. so

those warm inland spots are already jumping ahead. more to come for tomorrow. we'll take a look at your 4 zone forecast coming up. and a bit. for your health as more people are getting the covid-19 vaccine. many of them will be traveling. >> analysts say more than 37 million americans are expected to be traveling this memorial day weekend. we've been reporting on packed planes for the first time since the pandemic began. so since the pandemic began. so health expert count wal here to remind us of some very important air safety precautions and karen, these tips go far beyond just wearing a mask. >> right. and because we've been so focused on the mask about be a good time to remind everybody that some of the other things that we should. which in where and not wear. well, we're on the plane. that sounds good. so number one, before we even get into that, we need to focus on getting in because if in an emergency
7:18 am
that something happened yet. that you will most likely have to get down on the floor and crawl. if there's any smoke in the plane. i know a lot of people have difficulty with that. so, yeah, if you're planning a trip this would be good time to to start working on it and it be a good motivator to to start being able to get down and croft maybe get going with a stretching and some yoga to become more flexible. karen. >> also also it really comes down the materials that we wear as well, doesn't it. >> yes. so you we don't want to wear anything synthetic. you know, like the rain on the nylon. those the polyester, those are the things that will melt. doesn't have to be on fire, but it could just be close enough to any heat will melt and it will melt on your flash and then you'll get a critical burns. so you want to
7:19 am
stick with fabrics that are natural. you know, the caught and that will lead other those type of thing. so make sure you read the label before you get on the plane. and of course, you know, we want to scare anybody. we're just we're talking about worst-case scenarios here. >> but at the same the same time we do want to let people know there are some clothes that would be more helpful to wear on board as opposed to others. >> right in those and jeans. those are because their cotton, they're heavy. any kind of extra protection. you know, so think about cotton from head to toe other. and you've even your socks. you know, if you have a choice, go with the the better choice. yeah. that that's that's a great point. you know, another another thing is as we head into the summer time here on this memorial day weekend. >> with a lot of folks traditionally would short skirts cut offs flip-flops on board the plane if they're heading to some place like hawaii, southern california, maybe florida. not a great idea. is it.
7:20 am
>> no, because if something does happen, you have no protection skin is totally exposed and and you want to wear shoes luck to wear flip-flops. but it's better to wear clothes shoes. so in case something happens and no heels because in the case in the event you need to go down there evacuation chute. you don't want to puncture it with your heels. so definitely something comfortable and something closed and make sure think about long sleeves, long pants and even a scarf to cover your face. >> this is one time with heaven forbid. should there be a plane. this is one time and 97 mask would really help out. wouldn't. >> yes, that just a regular mask. well, but then 95 will protect you from some of those particulates so think about that. instead of just your ordinary mask. >> one thing that you also to see on passengers on board a plane is layering of clothing.
7:21 am
explain why that is helpful. >> well, that's that's a really good idea because if in the event something catches fire. you have layers of protection. the more layers you have the more your skin is protected. and and you know what it is kind of chilly on planes. yeah. so, you know, having those extra layers is is good for that too. but yeah. think layers t-shirt launcher and then jack >> and to reiterate what you said earlier. also think not only layers but think about 100% cotton wall. something this a natural fiber. >> writes something you have. those fabrics will still are still flammable, but they're not going to melt like the synthetics are. >> one thing to get away from clothing but is just as important is a medical id tag or bracelet. >> right. so if you have any kind of condition. it's a good idea to wear a medical id. and
7:22 am
if you're in some type emergency situation. oftentimes that triggers maybe an asthma attack or a heart attack. so you want to have that information on you. not someplace that in your bag as you probably won't have your bag with you. if you're evacuating has a great point. and, you know, nowadays with with covid and so many people. >> being ultra aware of our health. it is a great idea. just in general to have the medical information either on a necklace, on a on a wrist band. some place that easily accessible for the flight attendant. >> oh, absolutely. and whenever i asked this question, most people do not have that. i'm medical id when they do have some type of medical condition. so, you know, think about that. and in always be prepared. >> yeah. that that is the bottom line. karen, thank you so much. enjoy the holiday and we'll see you next week. >> right. eye. we'll be right back.

prevent fire from starting now, as you said, i'm currently in lafyette which will be under a heat advisory starting tomorrow and so will other bay area cities like on court, napa, santa rose cloverdale and livermore. you can see it on this map. people who live in these areas will be experiencing between 90 and possibly a 100 degree weather on monday. those hot temperatures can increase the risk for heat related heat related illnesses. the national weather service is recommending people enjoy the outdoors tomorrow and tuesday before the hottest time of the day. you should drink lots of water stay in air-conditioned areas and do not again. do not leave your pets or your kids in your cars now on your screen, you'll see that this is some dead vegetation. this dry grass mixed with the dry conditions. hot temperatures and equipment with flames can easily spark a fire contra. costa county firefighters have already responded to nearly education virus this year alone. they asked people not to set off fireworks barbecue

forth. and you want to remember that it's the radiation that really does this. we talk a lot about it when it's hot, but it doesn't have to be just hot. it's the radiation from the sun and the sun is going to be at the exact same location. it is right now by mid july. so remember, there's always a lag going on. that's why july's the hottest month and then of course, the oceans lag behind that september in the northern hemisphere. that's when you have the most at least about sea ice. here's what's going on as we go ahead for the week as that high breaks down, you'll feel some effect. inland slight cooling going on there. little bit going on here. however, it along the coast is going to be much more dramatic a lot more cloud cover. unfortunately, we're not going to see any rain with it may be making some coastal drizzle and around the bay some relief but not a whole lot inland. it's like to be so dramatic. but it won't be as lofty. what we look to see into the weekend and beyond is maybe potentially another heat wave trying to build its not as impressive yet, but it looks like the setup for once we might be looking some lofty numbers by the time we get to the following week we'll see.

this is the best effort we get up marine layer back that cools us down when that comes in overnight. so it's going to be around the immediate bay but inland, you're not going to feel those cooling effects into the afternoon big time dry even though there's a flow pattern that's kind of on shore. that's general and then along the coast, the marine layer is kind of hang on little bit. so it's not like the fire forecast per se, but it gives you a general idea of where the marine layer is really being pushed out there just because of the high pressure cell. that's overplayed overhead. so we have the morning clouds and fog and all that business. but hot today 70's of the coast 80's in the bay 90's happening in london lows tonight will probably not be as generous memorial day itself. very hot 100 plus happening in london. that means bay area communities, not just central valley 90's for parts of the bay 70's for the coast next week. now mostly sunny for the bay with those coastal clouds returning so temperatures along the coast are going to plummet pretty quickly back to where they were. but in the inland areas they hold on. so we looked like a lot of mid 80's for much of the week

wear. well, %e're on the plane. that sounds good. so number one, before we even get into that, we need to focus on getting in because if in an emergency that something happened yet. that you will most likely have to get down on the floor and crawl. if there's any smoke in the plane. i know a lot of people have difficulty with that. so, yeah, if you're planning a trip this would be good time to to start working on it and it be a good motivator to to start being able to get down and croft maybe get going with a stretching and some yoga to become more flexible. karen. >> also also it really comes down the materials that we wear as well, doesn't it. >> yes. so you we don't want to wear anything synthetic. you know, like the rain on the nylon. those the polyester, those are the things that will

melt. doesn't have to be on fire, but it could just be close enough to any heat will melt and it will melt on your flash and then you'll get a critical burns. so you want to stick with fabrics that are natural. you know, the caught and that will lead other those type of thing. so make sure you read the label before you get on the plane. and of course, you know, we want to scare anybody. we're just we're talking about worst-case scenarios here. >> but at the same the same time we do want to let people know there are some clothes that would be more helpful to wear on board as opposed to others. >> right in those and jeans. those are because their cotton, they're heavy. any kind of extra protection. you know, so think about cotton from head to toe other. and you've even your socks. you know, if you have a choice, go with the the better choice. yeah. that that's that's a great point. you know, another another thing is as we head into the summer time here on this memorial day weekend.
8:20 am
>> with a lot of folks traditionally would short skirts cut offs flip-flops on board the plane if they're heading to some place like hawaii, southern california, maybe florida. not a great idea. is it. >> no, because if something does happen, you have no protection skin is totally exposed and and you want to wear shoes luck to wear flip-flops. but it's better to wear clothes shoes. so in case something happens and no heels because in the case in the event you need to go down there evacuation chute. you don't want a puncture it with your heels. so definitely something comfortable and something closed and make sure think about long sleeves, long pants and even a scarf to cover your face. >> this is one time with heaven forbid. should there be a fire on board a plane. this is one time and 97 mask would really help out. wouldn't. >> yes, that just a regular
8:21 am
mask. well, but then 95 will protect you from some of those particulates so think about that. instead of just your ordinary mask. >> one thing that you also to see on passengers on board a plane is layering of clothing. explain why that is helpful. >> well, that's that's a really good idea because if in the event something catches fire. you have layers of protection the morning layers. you have the more your skin is protected. and and you know what it is kind of chilly on planes. yeah. so you know, having those extra layers is is good for that too. but yeah. think layers t-shirt launcher and then jack >> and to reiterate what you said earlier. also think not only layers but think about 100% cotton wall. something this a natural fiber. >> writes something you have. those fabrics will still are still flammable, but they're not going to melt like the
8:22 am
synthetics are. >> one thing to get away from clothing but is just as important is a medical id tag or bracelet. >> right. so if you have any kind of medical and it condition. it's a good idea to wear and medical id. and if you're in some type emergency situation. oftentimes that triggers maybe an asthma attack or a heart attack. so you want to have that information on you. not someplace that in your bag as you probably won't have your bag with you. if you're evacuating has a great point. and, you know, nowadays with with covid and so many people. >> being ultra aware of our health. it is a great idea. just in general to have the medical information either on a necklace, on a on a wrist band. some place that easily accessible for the flight attendant. >> oh, absolutely. and whenever i ask this question. most people do not have that. i'm medical id when they do have some type of medical

we're swift switching over to that mostly sunny mode and that includes the beaches today. yeah, clear out nicely. but as we venture in further into tonight and by tomorrow morning, that's the marine layer is best effort. you can see the coverage is pretty pretty pathetic going on there. that means the cooling effects will be very, very todest tonight. and particularly in lynn, you won't get much relief going on for tonight. the temperatures right now in aac racing ahead at 67 look at some of those yellows already encroaching up in the valleys in the north bay and on to the south a little bit too 50's around the perimeter of the bay for this hour. right now. we're ahead of where we were this time from yesterday by a little bit under a half a dozen degrees. we still have that excessive heat advisory that's in place for the east bay and up to the north bay solano county. it's monday and tuesday for you folks with an excessive heat warning there could be the temperatures popping beyond 100 as we get into tomorrow, 79 at high noon at 3 o'clock 88. but we'll see plenty of 90's on the board in those inland valleys. and we'll be taking a look at that in the 4 zone forecast coming up in

8:46 am
point where it's no longer safe to put boats in here. in fact, the lake is the lowest it has been in 5 years. the reason is that the tahoe region has seen 2 dry winters in a row extremely dry conditions. david watson is the chief deputy water master for lake tahoe. he says there simply hasn't been enough precipitation to replace the lake water lost to evaporation and outflows. lack of precipitation and snowpack and run off. >> so we're currently sitting about 2 and a half feet above natural rim of lake tahoe like tom who has a natural maximum capacity. and when it's at that capacity, the water level sits at about 6,000. >> 223 feet. the call that the rim. now there's a dam on the north end of the lake. the can raise the capacity. the lake an additional 6 feet to 6,229 feet of elevation and all that extra water. this used as a reservoir and that water cent downstream in the truckee river during the summer months. but as the water level in the lake drops less and
8:47 am
less water will flow through the dam. and at some point there may be no water going over the dam at all. and that could be a problem when we reach rim control, which would be this summer late july early august will start hitting that rent control with a limited release. >> we're not going to be able to meet fully satisfy your demands downstream, meaning less water for irrigation wildlife and people. but there is a silver lining of sorts. one that could actually make a lot of tahoe visitors and residents very happy. a low water level of lake tahoe. however, i mean, you have more beach when we're high, we get a lot of complaints about lack of now as for what happens beyond this summer or next fall. nobody really knows if we have another wet winter, it could fill the lake up and we'd be in good shape. >> but if it's another dry winter, the elevation of the water could stay near that rim level. meaning very little moisture is going down the truckee river to be used for other purposes. but for now at lake tahoe, charles clifford kron. 4 news. >> we are really, really in need of rainbow. i mean,

there's just nothing in sight at the snow not at all. let's go ahead. check in with dave spahr. talk about lack of rain, but also triple digit temperatures coming to some parts of the bay area. i'd a hot dries going to be for this memorial day. good morning, guys. good morning, everybody. that drought monitor tells us where the exceptional zone for just about all of the bay area with the exception of a little bit in the south bay is in the extreme category. pretty nasty as we go into the dry season at any rate. speaking of tahoe, this what the forecast looks like the next couple of days into the lower 80's. we have for tuesday to wednesday. so that means more snow, melting activity. it looks like for the next few days here live shot coming in from temper on. there's the golden gate off towards the distance still have a mix off this thin layer of fog leftover lots of blue skies aloft and warm. although we've seen temperatures of the service in the 70's. i'm sorry, in the 50's a lot about 5,005 1000 feet. it's already in the 70's. so woman appears us no delays happening there again, our temperatures moving slightly, as you can see around the perimeter of the

bay to the upper 50's. but you go inland. it starts climbing quicker like antioch already at 67 at this hour, long range forecast models don't have a lot of excitement here, but there will be chipping away at the high pressure cell probably by tuesday already. happening at the coast, more coastal clouds. the marine layer come snapping back helps with the overnight lows around the bay temperatures around the bay will be mild. then we'll go back to that routine. but inland you're going to still be battling a lot of 80's for the week ahead. so not a big, big drop and there we see yet another new system by next weekend. here. not sure what that's all going to mean. the potential is maybe another high pressure building. we might be looking at a potential heat spike will call the heat. but for right now, early into next week. 4 zone forecast where we've improved from yesterday. 74 san francisco tomorrow. even hotter. still so definitely be open in the city. going to be hot today. 70 going on daily city pacifica 6567 per half moon bay got a lot of 70's there in the northern end of the peninsula. however, south that pops into the 80's here.

maybe get going with a stretching and some yoga to become more flexible. karen. >> also also it really comes down the materials that we wear as well, doesn't it. >> yes. so you we don't want to wear anything synthetic. you know, like the rain on the nylon. those the polyester those are the things that will melt. doesn't have to be on fire, but it could just be close enough to any heat will melt and it will melt on your flash and then you'll get a critical burns. so you want to stick with fabrics that are natural. you know, the caught and that will lead other those type of thing. so make sure you read the label before you get on the plane. and of course, you know, we want to scare anybody. we're just we're talking about worst-case scenarios here. >> but at the same the same time we do want to let people know there are some clothes that would be more helpful to wear on board as opposed to others. >> right in those and jeans. those are because their
9:19 am
cotton, they're heavy. any kind of extra protection. you know, so think about cotton from head to toe other. and you've even your socks. you know, if you have a choice, go with the the better choice. yeah. that that's a that's a great point. you know, another another thing is as we head into the summer time here on this memorial day weekend. >> with a lot of folks, traditionally would short skirts cut offs flip-flops on board the plane if they're heading to some place like hawaii, southern california, maybe florida. not a great idea. is it. >> no, because if something does happen, you have no protection skin is totally exposed and and you want to wear shoes luck to wear flip-flops. but it's better to wear clothes shoes. so in case something happens and no heels because in the case in the event you need to go down there evacuation chute. you don't want to puncture it with your heels. so definitely
9:20 am
something comfortable and something closed and make sure think about long sleeves, long pants and even a scarf to cover your face. >> this is one time with heaven forbid. should there be a fire on board a plane. this is one time and 97 mask would really help out. wouldn't. >> yes, that just a regular mask. well, but then 95 will protect you from some of those particulates so think about that. instead of just your ordinary mask. >> one thing that you also to see on passengers on board a plane is layering of clothing. explain why that is helpful. >> well, that's that's a really good idea because if in the event something catches fire. you have layers of protection the morning layers. you have the more your skin is protected. and and you know what it is kind of chilly on planes. yeah. so, you know, having those extra layers is is good for that too. but
9:21 am
yeah. think layers t-shirt launcher and then jack >> and to reiterate what you said earlier. also think not only layers but think about 100% cotton wall. something this a natural fiber. >> writes something you have. those fabrics will still are still flammable, but they're not going to melt like the synthetics are. >> one thing to get away from clothing but is just as important is a medical id tag or bracelet. >> right. so if you have any kind of medical and it condition. it's a good idea to wear and medical id. if you're in some type of emergency situation. oftentimes that triggers maybe an asthma attack heart attack. so you want to have that information on you. not someplace that in your bag as you probably won't have your bag with you. if you're evacuating has a great point. and, you know, nowadays with with covid and so many people.
9:22 am
>> being ultra aware of our health. it is a great idea. just in general to have the medical information either on a necklace, on a on a wrist band. some placo that easily accessible for the flight attendant. >> oh, absolutely. and whenever i ask this question. most people do not have that. i'm medical id when they do have some type of medical condition. so you know, think about that. and and always be prepared. >> yeah. that that is the bottom line. karen, thank you so much. enjoy the holiday and we'll see you next week. >> right. eye. we'll be right back.
