7:11 am
aircraft owners and pilots association is trying to change that. it's offering stem classes to high schools across the country to encourage young people including females and minorities to get ready for all kinds of careers in aviation you know, there there and there you could have careers. >> and you know, we know what we know about a pilot. but what about all the other careers that within the airline industry. >> alp a program is called. you can fly and is now in use at 450 schools across the country, including more than a dozen in california. but there are no schools in the bay area participating even though it's served by 3 major commercial airports and dozens of general aviation airfields. and i would say in this start small and then can build something out. >> and i think what we do is we reach out to a couple of the school particular may be the ones that are in close proximity so that that we don't have any geographical barriers. >> the biggest challenge is

letting the students and especially the school's know that these careers exist in their own backyard. >> said i'm going to be doctor i'm a bit about what it would be very few stay out of the air traffic control. >> right. just have them have access to that and see. that is just like wow, you know, you're open the door, things that didn't even know. >> and we now have a red flag warning that's in place. it replaces the fire weather watch. solano county still has that fire weather watches a technicality. we're on the lookout for dry thunder showers going on

>> welcome back kron. 4 morning news. good morning, everybody. and our traditional fog checking in again. here's the shot from u c berkeley. as you can see, still dealing with that fog covering up the east bay shoreline. but that will clear out again, just like yesterday. pretty quickly today. it's not that kind of moisture that concerns us. it's moisture coming in from the southwest. the southwest us coming up from our perspective and it's going to be filling our atmosphere up aloft here throughout the day. today, tonight and into tomorrow. this zone of times. what we're worried about over the about 24 hours. we get to this afternoon to tomorrow afternoon. there's the golden gate bridge for you again. covered up with some of that fog. we've got the 50's around the bay 60's happening inland antioch already is looking at 67 stormtracker there's where the bulk of the moisture is in the form of rain or forget to much warmer down there too. so
7:16 am
just continues overnight. the timing that this is kind of interesting because our models don't completely agree with this. but let's go forward with what we have here today. we clear out the fog will start seeing some thunder shower activity off towards the to how in the mountains there for us this afternoon as the risk. once we get the daytime heating to see some of that dry thundershower activity, some of the moisture sticks out and then right before dawn, another little bit comes up again. the timing is a little different on this. one of the models pushes it to around the lunch hour tomorrow sneaking through the santa cruz mountains where there's that risk thunder showers now of that run is correct. that means we'll have some energy in the atmosphere for those dry thunder showers to watch out for there. you can see a lot more activity going on in the mountains of response after that, we run out of moisture really late in the day tomorrow. so therefore the risk subside. a look at the moisture levels at the surface because this is the environment that any thunder showers will have to go through very, very dry. as you can see during the day today.
7:17 am
tonight. plus, is if we get anything, you're going to be going through a wet atmosphere that's pretty good sort reach to the ground. and then we get to the afternoon drying out yet again. so it's very tricky for that second little wave if it comes sneaking in here could deal with some problems. red flag warning is in place for monday or today through monday afternoon this week, though, somewhat uneventful, we've got temperatures in the 70's for the bay 80's happening in land almost like a little flavor of spring. that coming up a little bit here. we'll take a look at your 4 zone forecast. what's going on for your sunday and also that extended to. >> for your health this morning. mask mandates have been reinstated in la county and most bay area counties are recommending that you mask up again. indoors. so if you're suffering from mask related acne ask me it might not be going away anytime soon. but our health expert karen, a walk is here with some tips to help prevent and cope with this side effect of wearing a
7:18 am
mask. karen, we talked about this a little bit last week. i thought we'd be able to talk about what to do now that we don't have to wear them anymore. clearly that was a bit of a pipe dream for us with all these recommendations coming back. it's important to ask me is not new, though, right. that's right. professionals and have been wearing that have to wear a mask pretty much. >> most of the day they've been suffering from this. but because the dental public is now having to wear a mask for long periods of time. they understand what we did suffering with all these yes, we definitely do. it's kind of the this area here that we're all kind of all of a sudden realizing, you know, we spend the entire day with the mask on. we take it off and then, you know, we see that we have some blemishes and break out. what's the science behind masks me. what is it that's actually causing that. >> nice our skin. well,
7:19 am
there's yeast bacteria skin might they all grow in live on your skin. and when you wear mask that kind of blocks. the airflow. so when you expel air, when you're you're haley, eric's hailing, very moist. hot air warm air and that's a perfect environment for these micro organisms to grow. though. what you have just to explain your skin has a lot of pores and poor openings to can now in your skin and that is what we call the hair follicle at the hair consists of a hair parted and and a lot if you're stand, it's not clans. all those micro organisms. the skin might bacteria yeast all-star clogging up. this can now. well, you also some

patients gland that's in oil gland and that means to expel oil so that your skin stays nice and lubricated. well, if it's all blocked here that that oil is is is not going anywhere and it's just pushing up and pushing up until you have as it which none of like to so, i mean, i think number one thing we need to make sure we're doing as soon as we get home from work is washing your face. >> yes, washing your face at keeping it clean. if you use gentle cleanser doesn't have to be really harsh because you don't want to dry out your skin. at something maybe with acid because that helps exfoliate the skin. and i know this sounds weird. but also you can cleanse your skin with a dangerous shampoo. really because dant yet dan is yeast its so if you use a dancer shampoo, maybe 2 to 3 times a week that will help get rid of
7:21 am
some of that yeast in the fungus that grows on your skin. wow. okay. and then i i use a toner. usually after i wash my face. that's always good to use to write. and if you are wearing a mask for long periods of time, then you probably want to wash your face in between because it just gets with the massive, just gets really icky so you seeing a toner like with witch hazel or or even a baby wipe. a gentle unscented baby wipes. if for men, especially who have facial hair and over throughout the day. be a good day. time to cleanse that area. if you have a mustache or beard okay to do those in between cleanings. i know you also put here, you know, apply a light layer of make-up lotion or sunblock. but i know for me, obviously wearing make-up in the middle of of work and then having to put the mask back on. then that makeup is now on the mask. how often get the we will. should we be washing our masks.
7:22 am
>> constantly should be you should be free for your mask. and i i understood you you're back in the gm wearing the mask again. yeah. take several mass with you because once they're wet. >> if they also they're going to start to harbor bacteria fungus. so. constantly changing. i like the disposable lines. if you want to look pretty, you could put o'clock matt, you know, a decorative mask over it, but get one that you can really just get rid of it and always have a fresh mask. i went through all my disposable masks like right before the june 15th you know, the restrictions, you know, were lifted and i was like, great. i don't have to, you know, use those all just keep the cloth mask and wash that periodically. if i use it. but now, of since it's being recommended again, i might go ahead and buy another disposable mask a box of disposaele the last thing that you said you know, oral hygiene make sure you're not breathing. >> with your mouth. yes, yes.
7:23 am
so that's something that that everybody thinks about that. when you wear a mask, a lot of people will their mouth. >> so they become mouth breathers. and then that also dries out your mouth and when your mouth is dry, what you need saliva to help cleanse the mouth. so you end up with mask mouthy. he hoped that bad breath event tooth inflammation in the in the mouth. >> so you want to make sure you stay hydrated. try not to breathe through your mouth and try not to eat sugary things that also get it it. you know, and you know, encourage tooth decay. so oral hygiene as a real important part of of preventing mask at the all right. so wash your face wash that mask and breathe through your all right. karen, thank you for all that we'll see you next weekend. >> all right. but i we'll be right back. major league

7:27 am

>> good morning. welcome back here to the kron 4 morning news. it is just about to be 7.30 on the dot here on this sunday morning. want to start this half hour with a look at your forecast. dave, i know we've got potential for some thunderstorms happening in higher elevations across the bay area. >> yeah. and actually they'll be recurring way, way up there. so these a very high elevation thunder showers. they are the concern being a course in the mountains because they're the incubators to produce this because they're going to be very, very isolated. it actually looks like the percentage of the chance of getting this is even less than we so from yesterday just showing you where this moisture is pretty much the bulk of it right now is kind of hiding out in southern california crossed over the river. last yesterday basically saw a line from say, las vegas right through. you can see la the la basin up to bakersfield is where most of
7:31 am

>> 7.44 here on this sunday morning and the state's fire weather watch has been expanded to include red flag warnings for parts of the bay area. dry conditions and a chance of dry lightning strikes are increasing the risk of wildfires sparking now the red flag warning officially begins today. it's expected to last until at least monday morning. it applies to the north bay mountains. the east bay hills, the berkeley hills diablo range and santa cruz mountains beginning tonight at 05:00pm. definitely not something we want to hear as we have just been so dry. we haven't seen rain and i don't even know how long day how long has it been since we've seen rain a not have to check. i'm not sure. and this >> well, this little know what is what is kind of situations being wash your car because you might old from just a light little rain hit the we might get over the next 24 hours from this monsoon.
7:46 am
really the big concern is going to be that dry lightning that we're looking at from this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon. a walk you through it just a bit. there's the picture that we have right now kind of serene after all, again, as we just saw the last couple of minutes there with all the flames there you have some nice cool fog going on there. east bay shoreline will start to light up probably the next hour or so. now our temperatures got a lot of 50's around the bay 60's off to the east bay. 51 chilly degrees up to santa rosa napa at 5760, for san jose. let's walk through it here. we take care of the fog this morning. we'll see the spring of a couple scattered thunder showers off to the mountains. we see some monsoon clouds already building this afternoon across the region. these are very high level clouds and when they start to get a thunder shower. golan. they have to go through dry air is the problem and hence, that's where issue is now. there's a difference on what models are treating this here. some are pushing a little. bit of moisture. right. our area late morning tomorrow through the early afternoon. now, this run doesn't have much on it here.
7:47 am
i hope this one is the one that winds out, but still the possibility is 11 o'clock 12 o'clock. 1 o'clock tomorrow. this little patch of moisture comes by now that's fairly early in the day. we don't have as much energy in the atmosphere to drive these things. so that's, you know, a little better to the worst. time is of the late afternoon. so the timing might work out for us. but all it takes is one or 2 strikes. and there you go. they're the thunder showers off to the mountains. as you can see. and they continue a lot of times like clockwork with the daytime heating after that point we get into tuesday. we're back to our normal pattern. it's kind of a northwesterly pattern that kind of brings in the system's. not much rain at least somewhat cool for the season. so the pattern is set up like this that we're concerned about the high pressure cells in the 4 corner states. that's why the monsoon moisture has been very active over the last few days before. we have traditional fog, but we're worried about the sparking up of those thunder showers before the gulf of alaska. lo opens up. hence next week. longer range forecast model. she we're talking about this is the concern in 2 today, tonight
7:48 am

>> 9.43 here on this sunday morning. dave spahr has got your forecast day. we've got a lot to kind of look out for today. >> yeah, it's basic a situation where we have some upper level moisture that comes in from the monsoon that causes the problem. it's not at our level here. so those elevated thunder showers are always very, very tricky right now. it's the local moisture that we have right here along the bay. this is half moon bay that you can see still overcast there. although mosobj is opened up the sunshine. we're already seeing some inland warming. but cool long half moon bay as will be the case ahead. so let's show you everything at work here. first things first, we've been talking about this monsoon moisture. there it is in southern california after it's all said and done about 36 hours or so. this low up in the gulf of alaska kicks in our goal from the brings us all that mild pacific air. that's next. week's forecast. so it's getting pretty calm all next week and very pleasant for mid july. then down here is all the traffic from the tropics, if you will,
9:45 am
and there's a chance. sometimes they can tap into may mean the monsoon can tap into some of that tropical moisture from the south, which we saw last august. if you remember. so that's something to kind of watch how the corner of our eyes as we get little closer. but for the scenario that we have right now there's the high in the southwest bringing up the monsoon moisture and the low, which was kind of patiently waiting in the gulf of alaska to kind of clean outer atmosphere as we get later in the forecast period watching things into motion here. this is this moisture bubbling on in. you'll see kind of a high pace. the skies well above us here. another is on some model runs late tomorrow morning through around the noon hour so little about the moisture right across the santa cruz may produce perhaps some of those thunder showers quite active. you can see up the sierra and then watch what happens at the very end of that wish that's when the low kicks in. and we're back to the mild pacific air in its wake. but what the wide perspective of the whole week ahead. once we get past this traffic in the monsoon. here's
9:46 am
our google friend. that low. very nice for the week next weekend. we do this whole thing again, it looks like more monsoon moisture bubbling up here again, that looks a little bit more potent than what we're dealing with now. 4 zone forecast to check in for this sunday. 65 san francisco as to the lower 60's at the coast bayside 74 for burning game and we have some 80's hiding out here in the southern and the palo alto, for example, about 80 as we're nearing that in the south bay 82 for san jose. a lower 80's along the east bay shoreline. tri valley mid-nineties 94 walnut creek 96 for concord. 68 for richmond. quite a difference in climate 65 for 90 fairfield 88 sonoma and 87 for santa rosa. so little rocky maybe for today, tomorrow, then pretty calm for the week ahead. not bad for july. 80's inland again watching out for next saturday, though, noel. >> a pandemic of the on vaccinated. that's how the cdc is classifying our current
9:47 am
covid-19 situation across the country as vaccination rates. wayne and case numbers have begun rising. the suggestion for everyone to put our masks back on is becoming more and more common. but we're curious what is the risk for vaccinated. people specifically when it comes to this new delta variant here to give us the scoop is doctor dean winslow infectious disease expert from stanford university. doctor, it's been literally just over a month since we were told we could take the masks off if we were vaccinated. now. here we are mid july essentially being told that wasn't really the best idea. what's your take on new recommendation to wear a mask again. >> but, you know, first of all, just think that it just emphasizes that we're not out of this pandemic yet again, we're still in a lot better shape now than we were. you know, certainly back in december and january when we were just seeing a huge numbers of cases and deaths and hospitalizations set from
9:48 am
covid-19. however, it's really very clear the last 2 to 3 weeks cases have spiked up all over the country. we're still not in as bad shape in the bay. area's as says certainly the folks in los angeles are in areas like arkansas, missouri, nevada, for example, have. already are seeing large numbers of again, a lot of concern. clearly delta variant is more transmissible i think is that several reasons, though. why? it's a reasonable idea for us to put our mask back on. we're mainly not just for protection of ourselves but also it's not entirely clear that the vaccine prevents asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic infections. so all of us myself, you know, who were vaccinated early on. is still potentially possible. you know that we could virus to others. if we were infected and had no
9:49 am
symptoms. so again, i think until we start seeing the cases said really dramatically decrease again, it really does behoove us sort of citizens of california to put her mask back on. at least 4 were indoors. >> well, and i know a lot of the cases that we're seeing mostly in on vaccinated people. but i have started to hear of different friends, family friends who have said i am vaccinated, but i tested positive for covid-19 what how big is this risk then for those of us who are vaccinated. >> yeah, it's it's it's actually the risk is is great in terms getting sick enough that you would require hospitalization you know, we're more significant treatment. but again, i think what this does point to is that it is potentially possible to get reinfected and then the concern would be that you even if you yourself have no or minimal symptoms that you could still potentially spread the virus to vulnerable people who have not been
9:50 am
vaccinated. so i think that's the reason public health departments in the 5 counties in the bay area have made this recommendation. >> well, i know it seems as though, you know, these new cases are coming because, you know, many unvaccinated people decided to take their masks off with the rest of us. so that's how for to become an issue again. how do we appeal right now to unvaccinated folks. is there a way at this point to urge them to wear a mask or better yet. get vaccinated. >> yet. to me, it's a very sad you know, someone who said, you know, been alive for many years now and sort of seen how politics is involved in the united states. i'm really concerned that in a way we become to but again, as someone who believes in science and trust science and. you know, is is part of this effort. i feel just so strongly. i just really wish that all americans understand
9:51 am
being vaccinated is the best way not only to protect yourselves but to the loved ones around you. >> any tips on how we can because i feel like everyone probably has someone in their lives. that is kind of avoiding getting vaccinated are saying they want to wait and someone told me just the other day, you know, the delta variant going to take us back anyways. so why should i and i'm like the only reason it's going to take us back is people don't get vaccinated. so any tips on how we can kind of convince friends and family. >> no, you're you're you're exactly right in. you know, unfortunately, though, also we have people, the united states that, you know, some of this, you know, pay attention to what are referred to as mainstream news media literature and others. i think are in kind of an echo chamber and i just wish a prominent politicians, particularly in some of the red states and perhaps even our former president would just strongly
9:52 am
recommend to everyone out to all americans that they receive the vaccine again. that's the way we will finally get this pandemic under control in the united states. >> doctor anything else you'd like to share in terms of what you know about this delta variant or any other variants because i guess that's my biggest question. does the delta variant now potentially change into a new variant that even more transmissible. >> sure. just the nature of viruses like this is that new variants will evolve and we're already seeing additional variance, including there is some concern you are referred to a store and a variant, which is also more transmissible started increasing. but the good news is at least the 3 vaccines that have been available in the u.s. provide a significant degree of protection against all of currently identified a so again, just you know, as you were saying earlier, the most important thing is for all americans to get vaccinated. the vaccines do
9:53 am
work. they're safe and they're effective. >> doctor dean winslow an infectious disease expert from stanford. really appreciate your time this morning. thank you, ma'am. thank you. we'll be right back. so maybe we're new to home improvement, but we got an insider tip on the ultimate flooring destination. we're shopping alongside real-life designers and contractors. and, these prices! yeah, we found where the pros go. explore floor and decor in person or online. oroweat small slice. i wonder if this has the same quality ingredients
