>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron 00:00am morning news at 7. >> good saturday morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron 00:00am morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is the final day of july. july 31st. we've got a lot to get to this morning, but we do want to start off by getting a look at your weather forecast. dave spahr over there in the weather center o% with all the details morning day. >> well, good morning. welcome morning, everybody. and starting off with our traditional fog and some coastal drizzle is also working its magic a little bit too. but the skies open up to a pretty decent weekend. we have in store here almost kind of goldilocks like to be well in the inland valleys where temperatures will pop too bad

this afternoon. but that fog is covering things up along the east bay shoreline. as you can see, kind of overcast and more than that just filled with fog. as we can see. also the a golden gate bridge to all the towers are obscured at this hour. now, as far as anything what's going to develop we'll see. later on along the spine of the sierra. they'll be afternoon thunder showers actually have some flash flood watches that have been posted. they're so after get some daytime heating action. what happened there. but again, turning mostly sunny, for most of the bay today. thus the progress we have 60's over a good portion of the midday. also in the east bay up to the north. they were in the 5061 san jose for today 77 by 11 by 2, we're talking 89 again. we'll see some inland highs reaching about 90 or so, but nothing too terrible. a closer inspection of your forecast in just a bit. well. >> all right. thanks, dave. to our top story now that times have changed yet again in the battle against covid-19 new evidence from the cdc shows the delta variant acts like an entirely different virus. it's

more contagious than the common cold flu smallpox and ebola virus. and it's just as contagious as the chicken pox studies from overseas show. the delta variant may pose a greater risk for hospitalization, intensive care treatment and death than previous variants. and as more and more breakthrough cases are starting to pop up health officials are recommending both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents mask up indoors yet again. san francisco now averaging 176 new covid cases per week, a 10 fold increase in cases since june. new data shows case rates among unvaccinated people are more than double that of those who have been vaccinated and hospitalization rates for unvaccinated people 8 times higher than for vaccinated. now. 77% of san francisco residents are vaccinated. the city says more needs to be done, though, to reach those who have not yet gotten their shots until that happens, health experts say there should be an indoor mask mandate for everyone.

>> cdc said sit back say people can take their mask off. the second part of the sentence was an unvaccinated. people should keep their mask off like how can you tell and do you really believe that all the unvaccinated people have made that choice are also religiously wearing masks everywhere. i i don't. so i think until the cases come down a lot. i think a mask mandate is perfectly reasonable. and i think is that is the right thing to do it for recommending likely to indoor masking. >> san francisco's public health director says the city is in discussion with surrounding counties about an indoor mask mandate. it will likely be instituted some time next week. another big concern is more variants. scientists fear the delta could already be mutating. new research shows vaccines alone might not be able to prevent future variants. researchers say the virus is less likely to spread and mutate when people wear masks and stay socially

distant. but the report concludes the best way to stop the spread is to vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible. now it isn't just san francisco seeing a rise in hospitalizations. all 9 bay area counties are too with the biggest jump being in alameda county kron four's gayle ong has the very latest from the east bay. >> alameda county reports almost 50 new hospitalizations in a week. people i spoke with say they are taking extra precautions in the district of fremont. people are still wearing masks outside. i think that we can all do we need to do. and if it's like just putting on a mask. while we're indoors or even outside. i think. >> it's worth they've been saying inside a little bit more going out was i always keep my mask on even though it's optional now and places both women we spoke with say they are worried about the delta variant. and i don't really want the world to shut down again like we had to do. >> we ought to shelter in place and stop on a little bit

more concerned about college because i'm going back. so i don't know how that's going to be with this news stream coming out because we had agreed to go in person and online. but with this new strain, who for all going to go completely online or not. covid related hospitalizations are climbing in some bay area counties alameda county has seen the biggest increase since last week. the county was at 120 patients on july 22nd. and this week it is that 168. that's why public health officials are urging people to mask up in certain places regardless of vaccination status karen see has been moving indoor gatherings with friends outdoors, try to keep it more like. >> let's gather in someone's backyard just to make a little bit more comfortable for everybody because everyone's, you know, on a different spectrum of how comfor able they feel being indoors. and as of this month, data shows alameda county is seeing an increase in covid testing. meanwhile, vaccinations have been down since june reporting from fremont. gayle ong kron 4 news. >> today. kaiser is helping get students ready for

in-person learning they're offering a covid vaccine and school supplies event today children 12 to 17 years old, can get their shot and pick up some free school supplies at beebe memorial cathedral in downtown oakland today. the event starts at 10:00am goes until 3 in the afternoon. anyone who receives a shot will also receive a $25 target gift card, both pfizer and johnson and johnson vaccines will be offered. and down in the south bay, a coalition of nonprofits holding pop-up clinics to help vaccinate san jose's homeless population. the clinic was held friday on old oakland road. the volunteers are using the johnson johnson vaccine and have administered about 100 shots this week. they're also offering incentives like hot shower, gift cards and socks. despite rising covid cases. the sonoma county fair will go on while the fair will still feel. and look the same. there are some rules in place to make sure people are protected. the fair's requiring people to wear masks at all times. if they're not

we've got quite a bit of fog going on. as you can see, as we start the day. you can see all of the east bay shoreline all lit up in the fog in the shrubbery is not showing up there. it's all hidden by the fog over this is going to mix out here for us. it will go to our traditional mostly sunny mode into the afternoon. temperatures are going to come behave themselves to nothing too crazy today, but it's still going to feel like the end of july. start. >> of august. here's a live shot coming in from the golden gate bridge in the towers kind of obscured and some drizzle along with the right to. but that's really the only show that we have going on again, looks like a pretty nice weekend in store for us lower 60's light at the east bay shoreline. well, inland 67 for antioch up to the north bay got the 50's in place. 61 san jose and 57 for san francisco there. you're on shore. winds that are in place. a little bit of a breeze. we see a lot of it around the delta really of credit right across san francisco. but elsewhere. it's not as pronounced future cast for. this is the flare up this afternoon. a thunder showers up in the sierra. this is why they have a flash flood watch has been posted going on here for today and that actually

will not be as strong tomorrow. looks like your traditional fog again in the home front tomorrow. but then this is tomorrow afternoon. so that kind of running out of moisture as we get to later in the week and that actually will dry out substantially as we look into later on for the week ahead. there is little bit of a heat pump coming our way by the middle to latter portion of the weekend. those inland areas. are you going to feel it. but nothing too crazy. so here's what it is this weekend. we've got the morning fog for the bay. mostly sunny nice 70's covering the bay. we may scratch a couple 90's there. well, inland early next week we've got mild start here going on more of the same. 80's and lower 90's happening inland. so there isn't much movement that bump, if you will, happening on thursday or so that will be late in the week might make some mid-nineties going on. this is probably to keep a contra costa county and solano county. that's where the concentration appears to be outside of that. you probably won't notice much of an effect in the bay may be warming up some of the east bay locations on the east bay shoreline to

near about 80 or so kind of tapping it as we get to around thursday that a little bit of retreat into the weekend. 66 today morning drizzle san francisco fog clearing out 71 covering oakland, 80 san jose not going to see those numbers jump, by the way, later in the week in the south bay too much again, it's going to be concentrated up contra, costa county and solano county lower 90's going on for antioch in concord. 91 also for livermore east bay shoreline upper 70's 80 for san jose have your 4 zone forecast coming up in a bit. we'll check into that extended to noel. >> thanks, dave, for your money now, california family say the child tax credit is helping them make ends meet. the money is being used to pay rent and catch up on bills. president biden increased the amount going to families and expanded it to include those whose income is so little they don't owe taxes. family say the tax credit has provided them relief after a year of such uncertainty. i think the child care tax credit providing that on a month to month basis provides those families that are struggling with the opportunity.

>> 2 be more successful in, you know, paying their bills and they're not feeling quite so like they're living on the edge. >> the child tax credit begins to phase out at incomes of 75,000 for individuals and 150,000 for married couples. happening today. a nationwide ban on evictions will expire. the white house says its hands are tied after the moratorium was put in place by the cdc last september. the u.s. supreme court ruled the measure could only be extended until the end of the month. an 11ph hour bid in congress to extend the ban failed on friday, putting thousands of people at risk now for of being forced from their homes. >> sometimes even the law enforcement people go into these of parton's of crime because they know they're going to do something that's going to put babies krebs out on the street. this is a public health concern. as you can imagine, that we think should be supported by both republicans and democrats.

>> here at home. california tenants will de protected from evictions for another 3 months, at least did a state bill signed by governor gavin newsome. the border battle between the u.s. and mexico is becoming more urgent as migrants continue to cross illegally into united states in record numbers. lawmakers now calling on congress to send immediate help saying border patrol agents are understaffed and overwhelmed. they think a new border czar could help solve the problem. >> put somebody in charge. his focus is just on the border and all that. problems associated with it. that would credibility in the eyes of congress. that's jay johnson. i can promise you that most republicans respect jay johnson. >> president biden met with democratic lawmakers this week to push for migrant protection. republicans say they're willing to work with democrats on a dock, a deal as long as the border is secured. first. still ahead here on the

nicely. so we do see the flare up again today of thunder showers going on in the sierra looks like after that daytime heating. this will be a case for today. a little bit tomorrow but it will be waning into next week. so that situation will be with us all week long. but because of that rain and kind of a tender situation there is a flash flood watch that's been posted out there 60's going on for most of the east bay right now 61 for san jose 50's up to the north bay. no surprise fog helping to keep temperatures. nice and suppressed. 77 by 11 by 2 88 to look at your 4 zone forecast and that extended coming up in just a bit. noel. >> thanks, dave. our top story this half hour is out of the east bay where the search for a missing runner is back on berkeley resident. philip kray-chick went missing 3 weeks ago. he left home saying he'd be going for a run at the pleasanton ridge regional park, but he never came back and he hasn't been seen sense kron four's camila barco is joining us live from foothill high school where organizers

are set to resume their search for him. camila. what's the latest? >> well, know multiple crews have set up or their command command center here at foothill high school once again, if i step out of the way. you'll see that many crews are have just begun to arrive. and if you remember, they did scale back their search. and this is the first time they're meeting once again to find philip kray-chick. now he was last seen on july 10th. as we said, his wife says that he went running in the pleasanton hills and never came home. his wallet and phone were found inside his car that was parked in the lot and police found his plan route on an app on his phone. they searched that route multiple times and didn't find him or anything that might lead to him search and rescues from all over spent days looking in the rugged terrain of the pleasanton ridge regional park at one point drones and helicopters were used to check out a report of someone hearing a cry for help in a

canyon. but that lead when cold the alameda county sheriff's office tells us what it's been like looking for philip kreycik. >> in an exhaustive search over the past month. we deployed hundreds of people. >> but with hundreds of hours of time using the latest technology to find for. we've been going over some data, some topographic some of the geography. and there's a couple areas that we just want to double check to make sure that we got everything right, nything. >> pleasanton pd has been tracking philip's timeline from the moment he left his house to when he got to the trailhead police say they saw him in surveillance video dropping off a package in oakland around an hour before his run volunteers have also been looking for creation precheck. they believe they have covered a lot of ground, but still no sign of the runner, but the search still is on going here at foothill

high school. the command center is set up search crews have just begun to arrive and that search and rescue. >> will begin shortly noel, back to you. alright camila, thank you. we'll check in with you again. and the next hour. >> also in the east bay of pleasant hill. woman warning people to be on the look out for rattlesnakes. cheryl girl loney says she and her husband recently encountered 3 rattlesnakes at pa. so no ballpark off of galle drive. she took these photos of what she saw. cheryl says she's seen gopher snakes around this area before but never rattlesnakes. she's also seeing some other wildlife in larger numbers and she thinks the drought is to blame. >> lots and lots of coyotes around here coming closer to our homes just lately walking out on the street. it's just they're looking for food and water that's closer to our homes. to sing in the rattling if. if that state can't have given us that morning. i i have no doubt that we could have been bitten.

>> she was really surprised to see it in the middle of the day as well. experts say snakes are typically more active later at night. basic advice people should walk the trails in pairs and should bring a phone in case of an emergency. you should also be aware of the location of the nearest hospital in case something does happen. >> the city of oakland still fighting to keep the a's in the east bay. a statement from mayor libby schaaf's office says lawyers from both the city and the a's have agreed to continue working towards an approved project. >> mayor schaaf and city staff are excited about the progress that's being made, end quote. as for what the team thinks, there's been no comment so far. we know a's president dave campbell was in las vegas just last week scouting out locations for a possible new stadium. stick with us. kron 4 morning news continues after the break.

being advised to get vaccinated for covid-19. it's based on evidence from thousands of women who were vaccinated during pregnancy and have had no serious side effects. the cdc says the covid infection can put pregnant women at an increased risk of severe complications. and now that risk could be even higher if they contract the delta variant. meantime, a

roseville woman says she is living proof pregnant women need to get vaccinated. the woman says the virus nearly killed her a jet. 2, 8, more than a month to meet her new baby. melanie townsend has her story. >> the grabbed me by my shoulders and she said there are already dying those are going brain just a month before being told she was going to die. kerry le mone and her family were preparing to welcome baby number 6 into the world. she then started experiencing flulike symptoms before her due date and decided to see your doctor on may 6th when n and they get a covid test on which all moms who going to have babies have to have. i tested positive for covid. the mo was induced immediately and gave birth to her son nathaniel on may 7th. but soon after her oxygen levels plummeted and her blood work later revealed infection which developed into covid pneumonia after i came on for 4 days. my oxygen dropped to about 60% and that the ambulance was called may 20 hoyrs already dying in my bed.

>> the mone was placed in an induced coma while being supported by a ventilator. she was also hooked up to an ecmo machine to circulate her blood for a month. her doctors at center. general gave her a 20% chance of survival on top of had gestational diabetes. and e- according to the cdc pregnant women, especially in their 3rd covid-19. is the best way protecting mother and infant. i wish, you know, i would have gotten vaccinated than later. but at the same time because i was pregnant. it was a discussion between my doctor and i n. >> we have decided it was best for me not to get vaccines baby was born. if it were me again to do it all over again, i would have just gotten it done after spending nearly 2 months in the hospital we came home from the icu on july 2nd to finally meet her baby boy.

she now suffers from memory loss shortness of breath and is unable to breastfeed her newborn child. i was so sad that i really can have that bonding experience with them that i could now that i'm home. i'm doing better, but i'm still not a 100%. >> that was melanie townsend reporting for onset also says thankfully her baby tested negative for covid-19 twice. >> were looking for some 70's along the east bay shoreline. however, in lynn, we might scratch some lower 90's. take a look at your

>> welcome back here to the kron 4 morning news. turning now to wildfire coverage of dozens of fires do rage across the west. president biden has put the federal response at the top of his agenda. he talked with western governors about how to help and how to prevent future wildfires trevor shirley has the story from washington. >> well, the president told governors earlier today his administration is doing everything it can to help communities impacted by these fires and that includes sending extra resources where the blazes are still happening. the threat of western wildfires is particularly severe this year and several areas have already seen massive uncontrolled blazes. the president laid out a list of things his administration is doing to help with all this. he said federal firefighters are now getting paid more and being hired into full-time positions

rather than just seasonal ones on top of that, the defense department is also being brought in to aid with fire detection and response. the president says fema is also deeply involved in trying to manage the ongoing fires that includes approving new grants and other funding for states dealing with fires so far fema has approved 20 fire. >> management assistance grants. tony up to a 100 million dollars to help states pay for the cost of fighting these fires. we're also working with fema and the defense logistical agency to get ahead of this emergency supply chain challenges and we still have some supply chain challenges related hoses and a number of other >> the president also praised the work of frontline firefighters. and he spoke with officials from electric companies about ways to secure the electric grid as these fires continue reporting in washington. i'm trevor shirley. >> here in california. the dixie fire is now the 11th

largest in state history. it's burned more than 240,000 acres in butte and plumas counties. destroying 42 building. it stands at just 24%. contained. meanwhile, crews are gaining ground on the tamarack fire. that's just south of lake tahoe near markleeville containment. now up to 65%. nearly 70,000 acres have burned there. some rain during the week did help fire crews and more rain is expected in the area this weekend. as for here at home, i don't think we've got any rain in the forecast all day on. no, no. good morning and good morning, everybody. we don't even really see an outbreak of the monsoon, which is good news because a user brings dry lightning. but we do have the fog this morning. a little bit of coastal drizzle. what work there? that's half moon bay. >> so i give this a few hours for that to kind of lift off will go to a mostly sunny mode. temperatures will warm a bit. but we're looking for just a minor. he pump by the time we get to maybe run thursday ever so briefly temperatures retreat into the following weekend. we do have some of the players that would

on today. we're to see the flare up of some thunder showers up in the sierra again today. they have a flash flood watch has been posted it. we do see a lot more action today. then tomorrow. and i don't think we'll be issuing anything for the day on tomorrow. slight little uptick on temperatures will get to the middle of the week, though, right now we're in the 60's and all of the east bay 50's up to the north bay. 57 san francisco and 63 for san jose breaking the day down free and clearing out these this fog, mostly sunny for the balance of the day as temperatures raced through the 80's to approaching about 95 mid afternoon, particularly off the contra costa county. meanwhile, we'll see a lot of 80's out there in 70's on the east bay shoreline little bit more on your forecast coming up in just a bit. well. >> thanks, dave. to our top story now the tides have changed yet again and the battle against covid-19 new evidence from the cdc now showing the delta variant acts like an entirely different virus. it's more contagious than the common cold. the flu smallpox and ebola virus and it's just as contagious as the

chicken pox studies from overseas show. the delta variant may pose a greater risk for hospitalization, intensive care treatment and death than previous variants. and as more and more breakthrough cases pop up health officials are recommending both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents mask-up indoors yet again now san francisco is averaging 176 new covid cases per week. that's a tenfold increase in cases since june. new data shows case rates among unvaccinated people are more than double that of those who've been vaccinated and hospitalization rates for unvaccinated people are 8 times higher that for vaccinated. 77% of san francisco residents are vaccinated. but the city says more needs to be done to reach those who have not yet gotten their shots until that happens, health experts say there should be an indoor mask mandate for everyone. >> cdc said sit back say people can take their mask off. the second part of the sentence was an unvaccinated. people should keep their mask off like how can you tell and

do you really believe that all the unvaccinated people have made that choice are also religiously wearing masks everywhere. i i don't. so i think until the cases come down a lot. i think a mask mandate is perfectly reasonable. and i think is that is the right thing to do. it for recommending likely to indoor masking. >> san francisco's public health director says the city is in discussion with surrounding counties about an indoor mask mandate and it will likely be instituted some time next week. another big concern, though, is more variants. now scientists fear the delta could already be mutating. new research shows vaccines alone might not be able to prevent future variants of the covid-19 virus. researchers say it's less likely to spread and mutate when people wear masks and stay socially distant. but the report concludes the best way to stop the spread is to vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible. now it is just san francisco that seeing a rise

in hospitalizations, though, all 9 bay area counties are as well. but the biggest jump being in alameda, kron four's. gayle ong has the very latest from the east bay. >> alameda county reports almost 50 new hospitalizations in a week. people i spoke with say they are taking extra precautions in the district of fremont. people are still wearing masks outside. i think that we can all do we need to do. and if it's like just putting on a mask. while we're indoors or even outside. i think it's worth they've been saying inside a little bit more going out was i always keep my mask on even though it's optional now and places both women we spoke with say they are worried about the delta variant. and i don't really want the world to shut down again like we had to do. >> we ought to shelter in place and stop on a little bit more concerned about college because i'm going back. so i don't know how that's going to be with this news stream coming out because we had agreed to go in person and online. but with this new strain in for all going to go completely online or not.

covid related hospitalizations are climbing in some bay area counties alameda county has seen the biggest increase since last week. the county was at 120 patients on july 22nd. and this week it is that 168. that's why public health officials are urging people to mask up in certain places regardless of vaccination status karen see has been moving indoor gatherings with friends outdoors, try to keep it more like. >> let's gather in someone's backyard just to make a little bit more comfortable for everybody because everyone's, you know, on a different spectrum of how comfortable they feel being indoors. and as of this month, data shows alameda county is seeing an increase in covid testing. meanwhile, vaccinations have been down since june reporting from fremont. gayle ong kron 4 news. >> today. kaiser is helping to get students ready for in-person learning offering a covid vaccine and school supplies event today, children 12 to 17 years old, can get their shot and pick up some free school supplies at beebe

see anything too crazy here a minor called heat bump happening maybe by thursday but beyond that really pretty stayed steady state going on on the home front now later on today. one of the flareup of those thunder showers up in this year. they have a flash flood watch out that way. arizona this is half moon bay. you can see the fog still very much in place. we have water droplets on the lens here earlier. so we do have some coastal drizzle at work of course, the golden gate bridge. all obscured by all this fog going on here. 60's cover most the east bay 70 already any off. we've got 50's up to the north bay 61 for bottle. 58 san francisco. 63. meanwhile, 4 san jose. there's a bit of a wind that's coming across the golden gate. as you can see here and extends off to the delta a little bit. that's where it kind of gets channeled a bit. but winds are basically in the single digits. just a little bit of a breeze. so after all, today we do get that daytime heating with a nice little flare up happening. that's why they have thedrest of the illness at red flag warning the flash flood watch has been posted very localized event. i know we have this drop going on, but you get too much rain

into small. too quickly. poses a problem which we can store all this. but anyway, heavy rain expected in that part. then tomorrow we do see again scattered showers but not quite the intensity. so i don't think they're going to reinstate that flash flood watch going on there. but again, some more thunder showers going on tomorrow. now later on, the bigger picture shows that's going to kind of about parade away because we have a low off towards our northwest is going to clean up a good chunk of the west from that kind of monsoon flareup don't see any monsoon coming up from our perspective, though, for this weekend itself. fog in the morning, mostly sunny by afternoon. we'll call it nice with 70's. pretty much in the bay and inland. most readings will be in the 80's but near 9 year so early in the week, mild start more of the same 80's and some lower 90's working their way in their east bay and then by late in the week. that's where thursday or so my pop in some pockets may be in the mid 90's briefly before retreating yet again into next weekend. so

and he hasn't been seen sense. kron four's camila barco joining us live from foothill high school where organizers are set to resume their search for him this morning. camila. >> all new all 16 agencies from all over the bay area are here today to find philip kray-chick. as you said, crews slowdown and scaled back their search about 2 weeks ago. but today a 125 volunteers are expected to show up at the command post at foot hill high school to resume that search and rescue. the runner went missing on july 10. his wife says he went running in the pleasanton hills and never came home. his car was found in the parking lot with his wallet and phone inside officers discovered his planned route on an app on his phone. they combed that trail multiple times. but still there was no sign of craig chick, multiple search and rescue team spent days looking in the rugged terrain of the pleasanton ridge regional park at one point crews used drones

and helicopters to check out a report of someone hearing a cry for help canyon. but that lead when cold gray chicks, father still remains hopeful. his son is out there. >> the teams have just been incredible and the work that they've done this. it's as far as i can tell. i'm not an expert in this field. but the people that i've talked to who he's still in the park will find him. it's just a matter of time. so we're still so hoped. >> pleasanton police is also optimistic they will find create check sense. there's water source is up in the hills. they tell me today search involves taking a deeper look at some areas. they've already covered the phones are still ringing at the police department. but none of the tips had let them have led them to create and ask anyone with information to call the police department. but today's search will start around 9 this morning noel, back to you. alright camila, we'll check in with you. >> in the next hour.

the age of 12 are fully vaccinated, meaning more than 100 million people are simply refusing to get their shots. reporter adrian bankert takes a closer look as to why. >> with covid cases on the rise in places where fewer people are vaccinated. many we're talking 10's of millions of people are choosing not to get the shots in some of the largest counties in the nation. less than half are fully vaccinated in places like dallas county, less than 38% have received both shots according to jackie schlegel with texans for vaccine choice. they aren't just anti-vaxers i have heard a lot of reasons why people are not choosing to get the vaccine. some and are waiting for that fda approval. and i think that is a legitimate and valid reason to wait to get the vaccine. others we talked to across the country shared the same concerns unknown side effects being one of them. the very same reason that medical experts say should be cause to get the vaccine. those with

preexisting conditions is a big reason for why some are deliberately not getting a shot. some are uneasy about complications due to their already existing health issues, whether from previous surgeries disability or even allergies. >> some are apprehensive about public health campaigns hesitant not only of the vaccine but government overreach, the more this is pushed in the way that it's pushed in itself is alarming to the fact that agencies are showing up at her is raising some 1000 people that you know, and that's africans about this among other reasons people we talked to are weary because they were unsure of the vaccine's efficacy and now more reluctant since there have been a number of cases where vaccinated individuals still contracted covid. >> most are dedicated to their right to freedom of choice i literally cannot keep up with how many individuals risk of losing their shots rang out because of this vaccine mandate. i think they have

>> welcome back. turning to our wildfire coverage now on friday president biden met virtually with 7 governors including gavin newsom to talk about how the federal government can help tackle the wildfires burning on the west coast. the president says the mix of hotter weather and drought have turned the wildfires into a national challenge smoke from those wildfires reaching as far east as new york right now, more than 3.4 million acres have already burned this year. >> we're in for a long fight. yet this year. and the only way we're going to meet those challenges by working together, wildfires are a problem for all of us and we have to stay closely coordinate doing everything we can for people. >> 100 million dollars in federal grants have already been given to states fighting major wildfires here in california. the dixie fire. now the 11th largest in state history. it's burned more than 240,000 acres in butte and plumas counties. destroying 42

buildings. >> and it's just 24% contained at this point. meanwhile, crews are gaining ground on the tamarac fire that's burning south of lake tahoe near markleeville containment. they're now up to 65%. nearly 70,000 acres have burned from that fire some rain during the week, though, helped fire crews and more rain is expected in the area this weekend. wish we could say the same here for the bay area. but we don't really have any rain in the forecast. some 90's for dave. >> morning. well, good morning, everybody. we are going to shake off these rain drops of the morning, though, into mostly sunny by the afternoon. and as far as a substantial rain. yeah. it's not coming here. even monsoon, which is good news because that bring some thunder showers dry it, be it. we will see, of course, that in the sierra they have a flash flood watch for today. probably not tomorrow, though, as the conditions there will also dry out too. so we look for the early part of the week, actually for a lot of the west to shake off these afternoon showers and thunder showers will see this on the forecast

map right now. here's a check of where we stand 60's for a lot of the east bay 70 for antioch up 'o the north bay. kind of a mixture of 50's and 60's. 63 for san jose and also for palo alto. there's the traditional high still in place. hardly gone anywhere. backside of it provides that flow pattern that brings the thunder showers going on in the sierra. however, this low to the west of us is going scoot this all off towards the east. that's right. so the moisture away. so conditions will clear out. check it out as we go forward into early next week. look at that. nevada completely looks like they're out of that goes off the salt lake and albuquerque clearing out arizona as well. but this will cool us off a touch. there does seem that he pumped for us by thursday. but things set up pretty nicely into the following week as we go back to mostly sunny. but the key point is you don't see any that monsoon trying to sneak up here in the back that can pose problems here for us, even though doesn't do much for temperatures. it can bring those dry thunder showers temperature highs. central valley want to one fresno, one

of 4 from bakersfield 98 for sacramento again. 66 san francisco in matching that for big bear there. they have the elevation working in their favor. okay 66 against san francisco at the coast 63 daly city and also half moon bay. meanwhile, on the bay side of the peninsula looking at 73 for burlingame jumping to some lower 80's down south redwood city palau to of 80 santa clara valley, 80 for san jose 83 going on for cupertino. 89 moscato still popping some warmer numbers. when you get again further inland 89 also for morgan hill. they're the upper 70's lining up the east bay shoreline tri valley popping in the lower 90's that we're going to build on this probably by thursday now little bit and up to walnut creek at 8990 for a concord 66 for berkeley. the late host 6987 fairfield 86 for sonoma 81 for santa rose with more 80's down south at the coast were in the 60's. now, here's what it looks like for the week ahead. mostly it will be mostly sunny, here's a little

meanwhile, the flareup of thunder showers in the sierra that will happen again today. they have a flash flood watch has been posted. there. that's really about all that's left of the monsoon. that's going to be a problem for us all for the week ahead. and also no substantial rain 60's light up the east bay shoreline for right now, some 70's off to the east bay 60's and 50's up to the north bay 67 for san jose. so again, mostly sunny, as we go into the afternoon hours, most readings will be in the upper 80's, although some locations will pop in the lower 90's. coming up a little bit. we'll check in with your weekend forecast. looks like and take a peek at what's going on next week. well. >> thanks, dave, to our top story now the tides have changed yet again in the battle against covid-19 new evidence from the cdc showing the delta variant acts like an entirely different virus. it's more contagious than the common cold. the flu smallpox and ebola virus and it's just as contagious as the chicken pox studies from overseas show. the delta variant may pose a greater risk for

hospitalization, intensive care treatment and death than previous variants and as more and more breakthrough cases pop up health officials are now recommending both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents mask up indoors yet again. san francisco is now averaging 176 new covid cases per week. that's a 10 fold increase in cases since june. new data showing case rates among unvaccinated people are more than double that. of those who have been vaccinated and hospitalization rates for unvaccinated people are 8 times higher than for vaccinated. 77% of san francisco residents are vaccinated. the city says more needs to be done, though, to reach those who have not yet gotten their shots until that happens, health experts say there should be an indoor mask mandate for everyone. >> cdc said said back say people can take their mask off. the second part of the sentence was an unvaccinated. people should keep their mask off like how can you tell and do you really believe that all the unvaccinated people have

made that choice are also religiously wearing masks everywhere. i i don't. so i think until the cases come down a lot. i think a mask mandate is perfectly reasonable. and i think is that is the right thing to do it for recommending likely to indoor masking. >> san francisco's public health director says the city is in discussion with surrounding counties about indoor mask mandates and it will likely be instituted some time next week. now another big concern is more variants as scientists fear the delta could already be mutating. new research shows vaccines alone might not be able to prevent future variants and researchers say the virus is less likely to spread and mutate when people wear a mask and stay socially distant. but the report concludes the best way to stop the spread is to vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible. now, this is just san francisco seeing a rise in hospitalizations. all 9 bay area counties are as well with

the biggest jump benng in alameda county. kron four's, gayle ong has more from the east bay. >> alameda county reports almost 50 new hospitalizations in a week. people i spoke with say they are taking extra precautions in the district of fremont. people are still wearing masks outside. i think that we can all do we need to do. and if it's like just putting on a mask. while we're indoors or even outside. i think it's worth they've been saying inside a little bit more going out was i always keep my mask on even though it's optional now and places both women we spoke with say they are worried about the delta variant. and i don't really want the world to shut down again like we had to do. >> we ought to shelter in place and stop on a little bit more concerned about college because i'm going back. so i don't know how that's going to be with this news stream coming out because we had agreed to go in person and online. but with this new strain, who for all going to go completely online or not. covid related hospitalizations are climbing in some bay area counties alameda county has seen the biggest increase

since last week. the county was at 120 patients on july 22nd. and this week it is that 168. that's why public health officials are urging people to mask up in certain places regardless of vaccination status karen see has been moving indoor gatherings with friends outdoors, try to keep it more like. >> let's gather in someone's backyard just to make a little bit more comfortable for everybody because everyone's, you know, on a different spectrum of how comfortable they feel being indoors. and as of this month, data shows alameda county is seeing an increase in covid testing. meanwhile, vaccinations have been down since june reporting from fremont. gayle ong kron 4 news. >> to the south bay now where a coalition of nonprofits is finding success in vaccinating homeless people against covid as kron four's. rob fladeboe reports the vaccine was made available at one of the largest homeless camps in san jose. >> enjoying the shade of a tension feeling good about finally being vaccinated

forcefully near the mountains like that for a typical currents and we do sometimes see those afternoon showers occur there when there isn't much going on elsewhere as a typical pattern. but later on this week, this is actually going to dry out a little bit from help out of this low out of the gulf of alaska will kind of sweep through and shut off the monsoon in arizona to off too. utah looks like in new mexico. there you see the activity tomorrow, not nearly as active as this afternoon hinting of a little bit of a drying phase coming. of course, we'll continue to get our traditional fog each morning to greet us as well. like that. so morning fog and around the bay mostly sunny by the afternoon ice with 70's covering the bay near 90 happening inland early in the week. mild start more of the same. we keep bumping those temperatures up a little bit inland and then by late in the week we'll call it may be thursday a little bit of the heap up just a bit. just for a day or so and then temperatures retreating a little bit as well. 66 san francisco, 80 san jose 91 coming in for oakland across

bay shoreline as well. the shot from u c berkeley at least the shrubbery is coming back into gear here. so maybe perhaps in next 15 minutes or so. we'll start to see some buildings often the distance there. meanwhile, the monsoon continues its trend. it looks like some scattered thundershowers even this morning off to the vegas area. and that's going to start to migrate up to the north along the sierra both today and tomorrow, although today will be much more of a fire show, then we're seeing tomorrow in terms being more active in terms of thunder showers, even have a flash flood watch has been posted in the sierra for today. that is now what temperatures now in the upper 60's and a good chunk of the east bay. 73 already antioch. obviously. now the fog, not an issue up to the north bay, 60's 50's and 67. meanwhile for san jose with that overcast in the background 85 at 1 o'clock by 4 near about 90 as we see some inland areas scratch in the lower 90's going have a look at your entire weekend forecast and venture head into the extended as well as your 4 zone. noel. >> thanks, dave. our top story

this half hour out of the east bay where the search for a missing runner is back on berkeley resident. philip kray-chick went missing 3 weeks ago. he left home saying he'd be going for a run at the pleasanton ridge regional park, but he never came back and he hasn't been seen sense. kron four's camila barco is live at foothill high school were organizers gathered and we're set to resume their search about 30 minutes ago. camila have they started. >> yes. just moments ago a 125 volunteers set out to the hills of pleasanton to begin their search and rescue crews slowdown and scaled back their efforts about 2 weeks ago. but today 16 agencies from all over the bay area are here to find philip kreycik now the runner went missing on july 10th. his wife says he went running in the pleasanton hills and never came home. >> his car was found in the parking lot with his wallet and phone inside officers

discovered the route where he plan on running that day and they comb that trail multiple times. but still there was no sign of cray-chick. now multiple search and rescue team spent days looking at the rugged terrain of the pleasanton ridge regional park and at one point crews used drones and helicopters to check out a report of someone hearing a cry for help in a canyon. the lead went cold officials have exhausted plenty of resources, but they're not giving up. >> it's been an exhaustive search over the past month. we deployed hundreds of people. but with hundreds of hours of time using the latest technology to find feel that we've been going over some data, some topographic >> some of the geography. and there's a couple areas that we just want to double check to make sure that we got everything right, that we didn't miss anything. >> the teams have just been incredible and the work that they've done this as far as i can tell i'm not an expert in this field. but the people that i've talked to who he's

still in the park will find him. >> it's just a matter of time. so we're still so hopeful. >> pleasanton police is also optimistic they will fight a check since there's water source is up in the hills today. teams are focusing on taking a deeper look at some areas. they've already covered and the phones are still ringing at the police department, but none other tips had that have led them to create check. now police are still asking people with any information to call the police department and their tip line. >> but right now this is just a waiting game we're waiting to see if the search and rescue teams from today can find philip kreycik noel back 125 people out there. hopefully camila, thank you for that live report. >> also in the east bay a pleasant hill woman warning people to be on the look out for rattlesnakes. cheryl loney says she and her husband recently encountered 3 rattlesnakes at pa. so no gaal park off of galle drive. she

took these photos of those snakes. cheryl says she's seen gopher snakes around before but never rattlesnakes. she's also seeing some other wildlife in larger numbers and thinks the drought might be to blame. >> lots and lots of coyotes around here coming closer to our homes just lately walking out on the street. it's just they're looking for food and water that's closer to our homes to sing in the rattling if. if that state can't have given us that morning. i i have no doubt that we could have >> she was surprised to see it in the middle of the day as well. experts say snakes are typically more active later at night. the basic advice people should walk the trails in pairs should also bring your cell phone in case of an emergency and of course, be aware of the nearest hospital in case something does happen. the city of oakland is still fighting to keep the a's in the east bay. a statement from

mayor libby schaaf's office says lawyers from both the city and the a's have agreed to continue working towards an approved project. mayor schaaf and city staff are excited about the progress that is being made asked for what the team thinks. there's actually been no comment. we do know is president dave campbell was in las vegas last week. he was continuing the scout out locations for a possible new stadium. well, the future of the a's is on certain there's another discussion happening to bring a second professional sports team to oakland right next to the coliseum. a big vote friday set the stage for a wnba team to play at the oakland arena. kron four's haaziq madyun has more. >> the wnba is now one step closer to establishing a professional women's basketball team in oakland. we are. >> talking now about a term of. 5 years. i it will be a

take a little longer in order to do that. but given our 2 we're already starting to see the shrubbery show up here, but still not yet to the east bay shoreline is still kind of covered in all of that, which we see run the golden gate bridge too temperature. check. how are going right now. most readings in the 60's over a good chunk of the bay 73 for antioch here up to the north bay, mostly 60's 59 santa rosa at this hour. so our players still much the same back side of this high. so we continue to see the flare up of those showers and thunder showers in the sierra. they have a red flag or i'm i'm so used to saying that a flash flood watch at this point. it probably won't see one tomorrow because it's not going to be as active that low's going help clean things out a little bit from their perspective. but the drought continues. even though all these monsoon rains been working their magic in the 4 corner states back in the home front. it's ugly. as you can see, exceptional over good 2 thirds of the bay area. it's only the peninsula that are in the extreme category and a good chunk of the south bay. but everybody else. it's

exceptionally bad. all right. for a future cast. we go forward and look at the monsoon getting pushed to the east. there's a little bit of a bump temperature wise we expect will call that he pump for thursday and then temperatures retreat. little bit as we finish off a week into the weekend. again compliments of this low and we don't see any rain coming our way. but it also shuts off the monsoon which can provide dry thunder showers. more perspective. for fresno. one of 6 bakersfield today. big bear about a 70 66 coming in for san francisco and checking out your 4 zone forecast golden gate park about 64 63 daly city pacifica 6563 for half moon bay matching this with now some 70's off to the bay shoreline on the peninsula, heading south foster city 77 palo alto at 8081 also for redwood city. 75 coming in for mountain view in the south bay, most readings in the 80's. but you get inland near they start to pop a little bit los gatos and the morgan hill both coming in about 89 to the cupertino 83
