8:11 am
>> welcome back here in san francisco. the great highway has been closed to traffic for nearly a year and a half. the later this month. it will reopen to cars at least partially kron four's charles clifford explains. >> well, here in san francisco starting on august 16th cars will once again be allowed to drive on the great highway. albeit not for every day of the week. now the great highway closed down to vehicle
8:12 am
traffic back in april of 2000, 20. since then, it has become and open space where people can ride their bikes and go for walks has become extremely people love coming down here, but it did disrupt the traffic flow in some of the neighbors in the area weren't too happy about that. so the cities compromise is that they're going to allow cars on this roadway monday through friday. but on weekends, you can still come down here and go for a walk or ride. your bikes will be closed to vehicular traffic. now, i did talk to one neighbor here who says she can see both sides of this issue. >> you know, i think it's been a wonderful opportunity to be able to come down here through this whole time and walk on the great highway. but having been born and raised in this neighborhood. i can see that the neighborhood and trying to get out of your house with all the traffic going along the lower great highway would be kind of frustrating after all this time. so i think what the city is offering is a good balance. they're still trying to keep it open at times but allow the neighborhood to again, get back to kind of normal traffic routine.
8:13 am
>> so once again, vehicles will be allowed back on the great highway monday through friday starting on august 16th the way it will work is that at noon on fridays until 6 o'clock in the morning on monday's. the road will be closed to vehicles. and that's when bikers and hikers and people can come out here and walk on the roadway also be closed to vehicular traffic on holidays as well. but for now in san francisco, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> is that fog starts coming back again. it could be tougher to clear along the coast. it looks like for this weekend as we back those temperatures up a little bit inland still in the 90's be a little bit better effort today and better into tomorrow. little break from the heat. got that forecast a bit. keep it here.
8:16 am
>> 8.16 here on this saturday morning and take a look at this smoke from all the fires in northern california filling up our skies right now. this time lapse video of satellite images from noaa capturing the massive smoke plumes rising across the state and here in the bay area an air quality advisory has been extended through today. however, air quality experts say the smoke we see here in the bay area. shouldn't pose any health risks. that's because the smoke is at a high elevation. but those living in the east and north bay hills and mountains, particularly in napa, sonoma and solano counties may expect worse conditions.
8:17 am
>> if you are the higher elevations, tell people is that if you smell smoke and you're probably being affected. and so if that's the case, you can take those preventive measures such as staying indoors. i'm having the windows and doors closed as long as he creating a clean a room things like that. >> smoke exposure may cause individuals to experience irritation in their eyes airways and sinuses coughing or a scratchy throat as well. the air quality district constantly is updating air quality readings that you can track online as well. dave, i know we've got the fog. we've got these hazy skies. a lot going on in our atmosphere this morning. >> yeah, they were talking there being very high up in the atmosphere and that's a plus because you don't suffer from it as much. but that's a negative because the winds that we get at the surface really don't do much of anything. and what we need is basically was we synoptic feature, a front which we don't get this time of year very often to really clean up this atmosphere because you can see there's lots of stuff still hanging up there. there's still a haze above us
8:18 am
and that interrupts the mixing process because we have to have strong sunshine to do that. and already we have an inversion which we always do in the morning hours. it's really slow going with the situation. it's like this. so little concerned with this haze that's above us. that's going to slow that mixing of the fog out. certainly at the golden gate. it is very much entrenched, which is typical. these are local winds and they're not going to pounce too much. but later today. true to form ills warm-up that will drive some on shore winds. but that's just local. that's not what's going on a lot. that's not some not the clia thought these fronts that we try to wait to drop south temperature check. we've got about 60 or so along the east bay shoreline inland pop at about 68 for antioch. still the 50's up to the north bay. 63. meanwhile for san jose. there's the closest to front gets to us way up in the northwest. here we are now we're going get some influence from this in terms of some slightly cooler temperatures. it's going to chip away in a roadway from these lot. the highs we had yesterday into
8:19 am
about monday will be will reach our lowest point and locally. what we get is the fog will ultimately mix out nothing's happening in the sierra. that's kind of good news because we don't want the lightning going on sunday morning. again, we do the same thing again, we're starting to get cleaned out here by sunday. this is a little bit of a hint to the front that store north's. we may get better clearing with cooler temperatures. how about that? that's going to game plan as we get into early next week. all right. here's what we've got morning fog mild for the bay with 70's inland today still in the 90's but dropping off to the 80's inland tomorrow and monday will be even better so early in the week, we start off with monday. pretty good. but turning hot inland already by tuesday. so doesn't last very well very long. and this for this week. it's warm for the bay with temperatures remaining in the 70's that are pretty seasonal. of course, we'll be checking in at 4 zone forecast coming up in just a bit. noel. >> thanks, dave. in the south bay, the fight to shut down reid hillview airport in san jose continues with opponents. keeping the pressure on. they say lead from aviation fuel is
