from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron 00:00am morning news at 7. >> good sunday morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron 00:00am morning news i'm noelle bellow. it is sunday august 8th. we've got a lot to get to this morning. some updates on some large fires burning up in northern california. but first want to get you a check of your forecast. dave spahr and i both rejoicing for a little bit of moisture in the air this morning. take a little bit of drizzle going on this morning to all. good morning. and good morning, everybody. it's other marine layer really checking. and we've seen this program before shore. >> but what we have going on is a little bit of a cleaning

action from a disturbance that will be coming across our skies throughout the day today. try some winds. that's what you're gonna notice. and these foggy cloudy skies. well, maybe except along the coastal areas that may be rough going. that will clear out across the bay. but here's half moon bay. some water droplets on the lens. you can also see the golden gate bridge when you can't. but is this is the shot for it. and of course, the towers all scared by fog. that's pretty typical in this. does mix out in the later morning hours, though, the marine layer is intensifying as we have the system brushing across us driving some afternoon winds. we've got some lower 60's covering the east bay up to the north bay, mostly 50's 57 san francisco 59 going on for san jose. there's a quick snapshot of where they stand now. they're kind of variable. although holding up a little bit around the delta and gives you an idea of what we're going to see later today with some of that color shun. it will be going right through the delta this afternoon because of that suspended smoke in the skies are still going to keep hazy in there for the forecast, at least in the morning hours, it looks like they'll be some clearing

happening for san francisco points west. but off to the east bay. when you get closer to central valley. probably hazy will work as a descriptor and the system will help clean us out. we'll take a look at all of that. plus a heat spike coming our way by the week's end. noel. thanks, dave. our top story this morning wildfires continue to burn out of control across northern california. >> destroying small towns including greenville in plumas county this morning. the dixie fire on track to become the second largest wildfire in state history. growing larger in size than the mendocino complex fire that burned in july of 2018 as of this morning. the dixie fire has burned 447,000 acres containment is just at 21 per cent. first responders say at least 4 people remain unaccounted for michael shure brings us the very latest. >> the raging dixie fire continues to destroy everything in its path.

including the gold rush era town of greenville, reducing more than 180 homes to ashes and threatening more than 10,000 buildings in the northern sierra mandatory evacuations remain in effect in several communities. but some people have been allowed to return home to check for damage. what happened? greenville's my uncle amendment. >> they were my sister's house in quincy on with the trailer. they went back home the next night blew it. >> state and federal resources are being provided to battle 29 major wildfires. the fires not just destroying forestry homes and buildings but making the air quality dangerous. >> we're not just talking about biomass burning, but we're talking about also other compounds, even paints plastics computers materials that we have been doors that can be consumed by the fire

and be part of the particles that we are actually breathing the dixie fire's impact not only in the air but on the ground and drought conditions in the next year could make rebuilding a years long process even after a fire, there's still lots of dry fuel that can catch on fire the next year. so another year of drought make it very, very difficult. there's me all this infrastructure, the basically has to removed like a hazardous waste site. >> california's fire season is on track to pass last year's, which was the worst burned in recent state history since the start of the year. more than 6,000 fires have destroyed more than tripled the land for the same period in 2020. michael shure ktla 5 news. >> well, the dixie fire doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon. an investigation as to how its part has already begun. a federal judge has ordered pg and e to explain its potential role in all of this last

month, a tree fell on the utility companies. power line at the start of the fire. p g has already stated its equipment may have been responsible pg and e has about a week to respond to the judge's order. another big story. now smoke of course, from the dixie fire and other wildfires in northern california drifting here into the bay area. it's forced the bay area air quality management district to extend an air quality advisory through today. there's still a possibility the air could get worse over the next few days as well. kron four's camila barco joining us now live in the east bay with more on air quality out that way. good morning, camila. >> good morning. also currently here in walnut creek and in the distance you can see that there's some fog and some hazy skies. but i will say since i've been here, sense. i was last year on friday. i have seen some improvement and they're still no smell of smoke. however, other parts of the bay area may see much more of an impact

because of these wildfires north of us. take a look at this map from the bay area, air quality management right now. the entire bay area's air quality is moderate and it's been like this since friday. this means it's mostly risky for people who are sensitive to air pollution. now, the quad copter 4 shows us some of the effects, the fires have had in the bay area. it's been nothing but hazy skies. at some point you can even barely see the sign the poor air quality we're experiencing is because of the macfarlane monument dixie and river complex fires the north and east bay. we'll see more of the impact, including livermore concord and in places with higher elevations now air quality experts say the smoke is above 1500 feet in the air, but it should not pose any health risk. walter wallace with the bay area's air quality district recommends the best ways for people to stay safe. in case they encounter smoke in the air. >> the air quality. it is not at the ground level. it's not

that bad. but in certain higher elevations, it is pretty bad now. it is extremely unpredictable weather. weather patterns are going to go if the smoke at the higher elevations does drop to ground level been what we would do is we would actually call a spare the air day and let people know that, yes, air quality has been the unhealthy for sensitive groups or worse range. and in those cases what you would want to do is, you be indoors with the windows and doors as long as he possibly setting up a clean air room with and some type of air purifier and making sure that you're out. you know, your windows or caulk and things of that nature. but really just limit your exposure outside of the best thing you can do if you believe that the airport is unhealthy in your area. >> now the best way to to look up your air quality is by going online or on your phone, i have an iphone so you can either go to your weather at you can go to your weather app and it will tell you what the air quality is in that area. so since i'm currently in walnut creek. it says that the

fog was rolling in. you couldn't see much of are we going to be dealing with a lot of fog on the coast again today. we will in the morning hours. but once that mixes you know, pretty much a good to go the other thing is to is that fog will roll in as intense tonight as we've been seeing it for me for the last couple of evenings around san francisco. it always does. but. >> elsewhere because the system dropping south and you'll see this in the forecast maps coming up in just a bit. this is kind of a good thing helping to clean out our atmosphere a little bit with all of this, too. here's a shot from half moon bay. as you can see, got the overcast sky conditions with us this morning of that will again turn to a hazy sunshine as we get to the afternoon hours as the golden gate bridge starting to see a little bit of the bottom of the tower and the south and current winds are not doing much for right they typically do pop up in the afternoon. but this is going to be driven by a little disturbance coming in from our north that we would like the whole of it to bring us a nice little rain opportunity. but that's not really going to be happening temperature check lower 60's

light at the east bay short. i got the mid 60's inland. their 50's up to the north bay with 59 for san jose stormtracker 4. if you look real carefully, you can see it about here as that line of clouds drops that south. you can see all the bulk of the moisture is well up to the south. that's ok because this will be a nice broom to kind of clean us out providing with it. some winds. that's not really a good thing because inland, they firefighters, of course, battling the fires. they really don't hear about winds. so the will be a little bit of that risk going on here. let's go forward with the sea just dropping south by mid-afternoon today. the fog is going to try to recover overnight like the well was talking about around san francisco. we get it, but it's going to fill up the whole bay area like it frequently does already by 10 or 11 o'clock for tonight. ultimately, of course, monday morning will be here, but quickly mixing out and notice how quiet it is remaining in the sierra. we're not getting any showers or thunder shower activity. the monsoon is put base was basically an area of kind of a a weak disturbance, an area of low pressure frequently that

will give us a rain event with this. but just because you don't have a to help out we get all the wind speaking of which it looks like this. typically they do pop anyway in the east bay provide some cooling relief but this guy, we have some aloft help to so that should help with the haze issue as well. helping to kind of flush out the atmosphere. the only thing missing, of course, is to get a nice rain event out of it. we'll see. the winds also pop tomorrow afternoon 2. but that will be driven. more on the aftermath of this and with the inland heating that tends to drive those onshore winds. so today is clearing turning a bit breezy. some leftover. hey, still with us. concentrations will be a little heavier aloft probably in the east bay and some portions of the north bay early week mild for monday. complements of that system. warming up tuesday very quickly, as you can see, and a new wrinkle today is it looks like another heat spike coming thursday friday. there's in 2 days to watch. we're looking at 100 possible around the delta contra costa county and also getting some 80's going on along the east bay shoreline as well today. now

there. even half moon bay looks like we're getting some brightness starting to happen here, but still kind of overcast at this hour. so this is what the projections are of that fog mixing out leaving leaving it just along the coast by about 9. we're 9.30 temperature checked lower. 60's line up the east bay shoreline getting into the middle 60's inland 50's cover you for the north bay 59 santa clara valley. 75 by 11 by 2. we're talking hazy at 86 temperatures a bit cooler today because of the system and they will be monday as well. probably better sky conditions by tomorrow. got your 4 zone forecast coming up. well. >> thanks, dave. our big story this morning. the u.s. now averaging 100,000 covid cases per day across the country. the spread of the delta variant largely to blame and we're seeing more breakthrough cases among people who are vaccinated. the uptick in cases is now forcing some san francisco restaurants to shut their doors for the time being. kron. four's. gayle ong has more. >> to san francisco

restaurants are the latest to temporarily closed its doors after confirming covid cases among staff, the businesses report staff has been fully vaccinated but are coming down with covid breakthrough cases. that's why public health officials change health orders from a mask to vaccine mandates. oakland resident jamie rather is recovering from the delta variant. i can't taste or smell. >> hardly at all. i still get headaches now and then i'm just way more tired than i ever was before. rather is fully vaccinated and says she contracted the virus at home. i got it from my girlfriend who we confirm she had it and then. >> about 2 days after she started showing symptoms. i searching symptoms as well. we live together. it was kind of inevitable. but we figured because i was back. see where both acts and that it must just been a common cold and. >> then it was too late. about point, rather does not work in the restaurant industry where breakthrough cases appear to be impacting the business, but she says having to take off work to recover. >> was financially challenging. i just want people to learn that we're not as invincible as we thought.

lawmakers. >> lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they're eager to get this legislation across the finish line. but final details continue to hold things up. the 1 trillion dollar bipartisan infrastructure bill has dodged another pothole on capitol hill. the motion is agreed to yet another rare saturday session. senators voted to advance the bill west virginia democrat joe manchin helped write the legislation were compromised that will address our infrastructure needs without going overboard. we're one step closer to completing. >> this product, texas senator john cornyn was one of 18 republicans who joined democrats to push the bill forward but republicans aren't done trying to put their stamp on the bill to fund infrastructure projects in communities across our country without increasing the deficit this week, the congressional budget office predicts that the bill would at 256 billion dollars to the deficit over the next 10 years. the full

tends to be where the fog encroaches in the evening hours anyway. but it will happen from west to east in terms of the clearing patch. by the way, is an addendum a little bit and central valley. they're really looking at to that air quality because of all of this. here's what happens for the week ahead. we're looking for a warm up little way. but some moisture coming our way north from the monsoon which will continue in the southwest. we don't see anything with that. but it's really a heat up. we're expecting towards the end of the week. you'll see that on the seven-day 65 san francisco in the 4 zone forecast mid to lower 60's at the coast. we have the 70's on the bay side to the south and still some 80's hanging on here. redwood city palo alto. and in the south bay lower 80's at that. for the most part and even morgan hill, los gatos mid-eighties going on 82 cupertino east bay shoreline to the south. now back to the upper 70's compliments of the wind shift upper 80's. you can see tri valley 88 walnut creek and concord 66 for berkeley. so noticeably warmer inland 67 the lay whoa, 84 fairfield 75 for napa and 83 santa rosa

and number one is weight gain. weight gain. yes, metabolism starts to slow down and that's because muscle mass starts to diminish af. once you hit the 30 c o 3 to 8%. >> loss per decade. so what you ate in your 20's in the amount of a huge amount you ate in your 20's. doesn't quite apply when he hit the 30's or else you're going to gain weight and is a higher risk for some other issues. >> exactly. a high blood pressure for one. so definitely want to start looking in managing and monitoring your blood pressure. >> the to cancer. cervical cancer. and that's interesting, too, because 78% of the new cases are found in women between 3039. so definitely get the pap test every year and then to testicular cancer in. that's where that's pretty rare. but

it's banned in 50% of that type of cancer is found in men between age 2034 so something to >> not i'm diabetes as well. diabetes definitely. so if you do have extra weight new. they're carrying high blood pressure. all those things. >> lead to a diabetes and diabetes is linked to cardiovascular disease. so and a lot of people don't know that they even have pre diabetes. and so it starts in your 20. so definitely get tested for your high blood sugar. yeah. this is like not the time to avoid going to see your doctor right. in your 30's east art happened reality sets i feel it. i feel like okay. you do have a longevity to do list, things that we can do to try and all of these risks. and and these health

issues at number one issues at number one stretching. that seems like a easy one. >> stretching you may lose muscle mass as you age, but you can never you never have to lose your flexibility and your flexibility if you you start losing your flexibility, you're just not going to be able to do a lot of things that you did in your 20's. what i like to do is i'd like to make some of the young younger ones. live like 2030's year-old with the older adults. the ones in their 60's and 70's. and so it's kind of a preview. >> of what can happen if you don't take care of your flexibility. i mean, that's when we start to get the back pain lower back pain, that sort of thing. >> yes. so if you're already experiencing that now that he's >> definitely because stretching your muscles are tight. there's shorten a long day, least some of that tension. i feel like the pandemic pushed us all away

from our normal, you know, going to yoga class and that sort of thing. we really need to get back into those routines. if we lost improving your body composition. how do we do that? so that is reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass. and that will also help with your metabolism. so weight training definitely weight training and getting enough exercise. so watching the diet as well as exercise real important and getting our sleep improving. our sleep skills. yes, and sleep will have an effect on weight to steady show that if you don't get enough sleep, which is at least 7 hours or 7 hours is actually they the ideal amount. but if you're not getting less than that. and a lot of 30 somethings are getting a lot less than that. because they're so busy and families and and all tend to gain weight alcohol consumption adds to 8 games

here asking us to quit the smoking and reducing that alcohol consumption. >> all those short term hangovers that you may have had in your are going worse affected as you get into your 30's indefinitely. it's a good time to start cutting back because you are now at a higher risk of some of these diseases linked to smoking and linked to alcohol. and i a really good one hand you have is balancing home and work, which i think it's hard for 30 year olds. >> it is. it is. and it's a good idea to kind do the self checks every once in a while. and my balancing my work life and my home life and my eye reaching out to my friends and. >> and and just just to see because you need to be it's a good time to practice relaxation and really deacon pressing because that can lead to. and what i see in the older years. a lot of chronic diseases like heart disease and coronary disease is in and

at the golden gate bridge. the towers all scared by that. so again, in the next couple of hours. this will be contained or mixed out. the air is not as dry aloft as it was from yesterday lower 60's line up the east bay shoreline with those 50's up north and for the winds, yes. will see them pick up a little bit later today because of this disturbance that will help kind of flush out or atmosphere a little bit but will put hazy skies and there all the way till mid afternoon. high temperatures reaching near 90 in some of those inland valleys. we'll have more on your forecast in a bit. noel. thanks, dave. our top story this morning. wildfires continue to burn out of control across northern california. >> destroying small towns including greenville in plumas county this morning. the dixie fire on track to become the second largest wildfire in state history, growing larger in size than the mendocino complex fire that burned in july of 2018. now as of this morning, the dixie fire has burned 447,000 acres containment just at 21 per

has ordered pg and e to explain its potential role in all of this. >> last month, the tree fell on the utility's cup. utility companies power line at the start of the fire pg e has already stated its equipment may have been responsible pg and e has about a week to respond to the judge's order. now smoke from the dixie fire and other wildfires in northern california does continue to drift here into the bay area. it's forced the bay area air quality management district to extend an air quality advisory through today and there's a possibility it could get worse over the next few days. kron four's, camila barco live in the east bay with little bit more on air quality out there camila. you compared to friday. it seemed a little bit better out there. >> it definitely does. and i mean, right now you can just see some fog some hazy skies. but like i said, since friday, eyes, it can actually now see some of the mountains and the hills compared to when i was last here last last here. but some people in other parts of

the bay area may see something different. take a look at this map from the bay area, air quality management. most of the bay area is shaded in yellow. and that means that the air quality in the area is moderate. so it means that mostly it's mostly risky for people who sensitive to air pollution. now, the quad copter 4 shows us some of the effects the fires have had in the bay area. it's been nothing but hazy skies. at some point you can even be barely see the sun. >> now this poor air quality. we're experiencing is because of the macfarlane monument dixie and river complex fires the north and east bay. we'll see more of the impact, including places like livermore concord and places at higher elevations. air quality experts say the smoke is above 1500 feet in the air, but it should not pose any health risk. here's walter wallace with the bay area's air quality district management. >> a lot of the smoke tends to be aloft. but we are seeing some localized impacts in the north bay in parts of the east

bay. so in those cases where there are those localized impacts. we're letting people know that if you to smell smoke, you probably are being affected you should take measures to protect yourself and your family. but limiting your exposure outside. if a lot of that smoke happens to drop and we see that the air quality monitors are showing unhealthy levels may believe that it's going to be unhealthy based on the weather patterns. they would call a spare the air for the following day, but it's all determined on whether or not what the weather is going to look like what the smokes going to do. >> now, if you want to get a better idea of what your air quality is in the air. you can look online or on your phone i know i said the air quality has gotten better and actually just got better within the past hour. my iphone actually tells me that the air quality here in walnut creek is moderate at last check. will in the last hour. it was the air quality index was at 62 and now it's at 53. so we're starting to see some of that air quality get better. well,

>> welcome back. 8.15 here on this sunday. time for another check of our forecast. dave spahr standing by. dave. it's hard to believe that it's almost been a year since we saw that dry lightning that sparked all of those wildfires. i'm really hoping that type of thing just kind of stays away from us this year. we've been lucky with the monsoon here noel, word beginning close a couple of times this season so far enough for the week ahead. there's just a little bit of a whisper of that coming up on thursday a little bit. >> but nothing really beyond that. and last year was kind of the worst of both worlds, if you will, because we had some tropical moisture thrown in the upper layers of the atmosphere was just throwing kerosene on the fire, if you will, sfo got about a half an hour of a delay going on here, but it's still the fog that's in place and that again expected to mix out as the morning progresses. typical fashion golden gate bridge still socked in there a little bit, although it seems to be lifting a little bit from the bottom edge. so for today, what we're waiting for is a disturbance to pass on by had

a professor one time in college said poor excuse for a front and that's kind of what this one is. but hey, it's what the doctor ordered from us help clean out our atmosphere. bring in some cooler temperatures. now we bring any rain or anything like that, which was what fronts oftentimes do. but no, not this go around certain not this time of season anyway. lower 60's light up the east bay shoreline 66 for antioch 62 conquered 50's up to the north bay. 62 san jose. here it is. you can hardly make it out. typically seen a line of clouds that come dropping south rain and all that. no, it's this time of year. you don't see that. but it's going to go right across the bay. give those on shore. winds not just to the surface. we're going to get that too. and some cooling. but also a lot in this also cleans out or atmosphere a little bit at least tries to do when it can. so here's what happens on future cast for you kind of see it. they're a little bit kind of pushing the way through the marine layer. we'll get winds certainly at the service. we do have the recovery of the some of that marine layer by midnight or so. but it's going to be much

more restricted than it was yesterday and we probably won't see as much in the way of this drizzle and light rain shower activity that we saw this weekend in the wake of this front. temperatures drop a little bit today. but inland bam, they're going to pop back to the 90's probably as early as tomorrow. and then we're looking for the development of a little bit of a heat spike. here are the winds at the surface on shore inland. however, because of inland heating that will drive which typically does drive the onshore winds. but this front is helping along the way. so we get nice broad base of on shore. winds across the bay, not just necessarily in those valleys, although they'll be a little heavier there and around the delta, particularly all the way to tomorrow. so for today, clearing breezy and all that stuff. some leftover hayes. yeah. now by the afternoon, you might get some activity that will help clear things out to the east bay mild monday. but start to warm up in the inland valleys though mid-nineties well inland, it looks like as we get to by tuesday or wednesday. the end of the week's what we're really worried about we'll see temperatures pop near 100. i'm

gonna keep 99 in there for now. and we might see the east bay shoreline even see about 80 or so 65 san francisco will be left with some drizzle or used to be some scattered clouds. oakland at 71 morning. hey, are warning fog and then that turns to haze and then hazy in the afternoon for san jose. again, this front's going help clean things out what it can upper 80's to lower 90's in the far east bay 80's 70's mixture up north 81 san jose in a bit. we'll have that 4 zone forecast. look at the extended noel, thanks, dave. over in the east bay students and the oakland unified school district are heading back to the classroom tomorrow. there's going to be covid protocols in place for learning on the clock in the classroom like having to wear masks. but some parents are calling on school leaders to make weekly on site. covid testing available for anyone who wants it as well. kron four's amanda hari house. more. >> i feel like this is something really, really important to help keep our kids in our community safe. olivier you vick is in oakland

unified school district kindergarten teacher and a mother of usd students. she says the schools have great ventilation heppa filters and masking. but the school board could be doing more testing is a really critical. so she started this change. dot org, petition thursday night calling for the board to provide testing. it is already received hundreds of signatures. we delivered in person yesterday to shopping gonzales is how she's the school board president. >> she wasn't there, but we left a message with her husband open school board district. 5 director mike hutchinson says he supports the petition. it is a bare minimum safety requirement to have covid testing offered at all of our schools. he says he's pushing the board to make sure testing happens. i've introduced a resolution which will be coming at wednesday school board here in oakland to call for weekly testing

temperature report here. lower 60's over most of the real estate, some chilly 50's up to the north bay still hanging on so hazy into the afternoon. we'll call it, although this front dropping south is trying to vacuum that 81 by noon by 3 o'clock. we're 87 coming up, we'll have a look at your 4 zone forecast in a bit. well, all right. thanks, dave. our big story this morning. the delta variant causing a sharp rise in covid cases hospitals, seeing more patients in the icu. and there's also a sharp uptick in children getting sick. >> this all comes as schools get back in session. john fenoglio has the warning from the white house covid response team. >> the u.s. is now averaging roughly 100,000 new covid cases a day numbers not seen since last winter's deadly surge driven by the more transmissible delta variant cases are continuing to rise. these cases are concentrated in communities with low vaccination rates, white house coronavirus coordinator. jeff zients says hospitalizations and deaths are also up in 7 states alone, florida, texas,

missouri, arkansas, louisiana, alabama mississippi. states with some of the lowest vaccination rates. account for about half of new cases and hospitalizations in the past week. despite making up less than a quarter of the u.s. population with school back in session, public health officials say they're seeing more cases in children she's doing much better. she's off the breathing machine right now. she stable and ice are about hours ago. she's resting in her mother's arms comfortably, 11 month-old ava ramires contracted covid and was airlifted from houston to a hospital in temple, texas about a 170 miles away. >> because there were no available pediatric beds in the greater houston area. certainly scary for parents. she each arrived at a hospital in houston where because of her condition. they needed it. but her on a breathing machine doctor richard king is a pediatric critical care specialist in northridge.

we're an uptick in the number of cases did not just in total number of cases in children. but also hospitalization among children with covid. >> so she with the delta variant to complicate things. so would were also hitting the virus. the virus on the season for children as going to start to see a lot more fluid. king says there is no evidence the delta strain causes more serious disease and children. but he echoes concerns shared by the cdc that children are susceptible to the highly transmissible variant. john fund ktla 5 news. >> meanwhile, the cdc is urging those who have already been infected with covid to still go ahead and get vaccinated according to a new gallup poll. one of the main reasons people aren't getting vaccinated is because they believe a previous covid infection has left them immune officials say natural immunity is effective. if you're exposed to the same variant, but it drops off. if you're exposed to other variants,

forward but republicans aren't done trying to put their stamp on the bill to fund infrastructure projects in communities across our country without increasing the deficit this week, the congressional budget office predicted the bill would at 256 billion dollars to the deficit over the next 10 years. the full senate deserves as full shape. this important legislation. the senate has already consider 22 amendments with more to come and republicans will have another chance to block the bill before a final vote. we can get this done. the easy way or the hard way senate majority leader chuck schumer says, well, democrats are willing to make a few more changes to the bill. it's time to get on with it. the senate will stay in session until we finish our work. it's up to my republican colleagues. how long it takes a final vote on the bill is likely within the next few days at this point there's no set date for a final vote. but pushback from conservative lawmakers could stall a vote until monday or even tuesday. for now in

>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron 00:00am morning news at 9. >> good morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron 00:00am morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is sunday august 8th. we've got a lot to get to this morning, including some updates on that dixie fire burning up in northern california. but first we want to start off by getting a look at your weather forecast. dave spahr standing by with some details a day. >> hey, good morning. well, good morning everybody. and again, the fog is what we're dealing with this morning with some coastal. and, you know, really bayside drizzle a little bit. that, of course, again, mixing out too well, kind of hazy skies. but improved hazy skies that that we have a front that's going help clean things out and drive some winds this

afternoon. first things first, speaking of the fog last check there still delay out of sfo. but only half hour or so. it's all plane. take off just about 2 minutes ago. so things are still moving at least the view from the golden gate bridge. looks like the fog is lifting from the ground level. just above the towers temperature check a lot of 60's off to the east bay 50's north bay in the peninsula and 65 to check for san jose winds, not doing too much yet, but a little bit of a breeze holding on here in most locations and we'll expect one to build this afternoon. not just because of daytime heating but forces that are working a lot for today. 84 by 1 o'clock, by 4 about 86 might still touch the lower 90's and some locations. but then we'll see temperatures snapping back next weekend. unfortunately might be another heat spike by the end of next week off. more on that in a bit. noel. >> thanks, dave. breaking news this morning. the dixie fire burning in butte and plumas counties is now the second largest wildfire in state history. new numbers just in this morning show the fire has

grown to more than 463,000 acres that's a 16,000 acre jump overnight. fire crews were able to keep up, though, as the blaze does remain. 21% contained for comparison only the august complex fires from last year are bigger than this one. those fires combined to burn more than 1 million acres. now, as for the dixie fire first responders say at least 4 people in nearby communities remain unaccounted for michael shure brings us the very latest on the firefight. >> the raging dixie fire continues to destroy everything in its path. including the gold rush era town of greenville, reducing more than 180 homes to ashes and threatening more than 10,000 buildings in the northern sierra mandatory evacuations remain in effect in several communities. but some people have been allowed to return home to check for

damage. what happened? green was a snap solution. my uncle and women. >> they were my sister's house in quincy on with the trailer. they went back home. and that's not a blue out. >> state and federal resources are being provided to battle 29 major wildfires. the fires not just destroying forestry homes and buildings but making the air quality dangerous. >> we're not just talking about biomass burning, but we're talking about also other compounds, even paints plastics computers materials that we have been doors that can be consumed by the fire and be part of the particles that we are actually breathing the dixie fire's impact not only in the air but on the ground and drought conditions in the next year could make rebuilding a years long process even after a fire, there's still lots of dry fuel that can catch on fire. the next year. so another year

drill make it very, very difficult to all this infrastructure that basically has to removed like a hazardous waste site. >> california's fire season is on track to pass last year's, which was the worst burned in recent state history since the start of the year. more than 6,000 fires have destroyed more than triple the land for a% the same period in 2020. michael shure ktla 5 news. >> well, the dixie fire doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon either an investigation as to how it sparked has already begun a federal judge has ordered pg and e to explain its potential role in all of this last month, a tree fell on the utility companies. power line at the start of the fire and pg and has already stated its equipment may have been responsible pg and e has about a week to officially respond to the judge's order. now smoke from the dixie fire and other wildfires that are burning in northern california continues to drift here into the bay area. it's forced the

bay area air quality management district to extend an air quality advisory through today. there's a possibility the air could get worse. but so far this morning, kron four's camila barco she's seen it improve over the last couple of hours there in the east bay. good morning. camila. >> good morning. also, yeah, i've seen it improved in since i was last here on friday. you can now see the mountains, the hills. there's less of a haze and there's more blue skies here. however, i want people to take a look at this map from the bay area, air quality management. you can see that a majority of the bay area's air quality is still moderate and it's been like that since friday. so this means it's mostly risky for people who are sensitive to air pollution. now, the quad copter for 4 shows us some of the effects of fires have had in the bay area this past weekend. we've seen nothing but hazy skies and at some point you can barely see the sun this poor air quality. we're experiencing is because

of the mcfarland monument dixie and river complex fires the north and east bay. we'll see more of the impact, including in places like livermore concord and higher elevations. air quality experts say the smoke is above 1500 feet in the air. but it should not pose any health risk. here's walter wallace with the bay area's air quality management district. >> well, you know, wildfires are extremely unpredictable and they can happen at a moment's notice. and because these wildfires that we're dealing with right now are so unpredictable. our meteorologists are actually calling this on a day by day basis. that's the kind of feel comfortable doing right now. so if you notice, we've been calling a smoke advisories because we're so closely. so it's really difficult to tell and it would be almost irresponsible for us to really try to predict too far out so we're taking it on day by day basis and as of right now, a lot of the smoke is aloft and we're waiting to see what happens in the future.

>> welcome back. 9.15 on the dot sunday morning. it's time for another check of your weather forecast. dave sphar given us a closer look at when this haze in the fog can kind of. >> get out of here. yeah, we're late morning hours shore and it's going to be a little bit by this front too. that's going to kind of clean out some of this haze that we've had going on here a little bit sfo, though, because of the fog still reporting about a half hour delay or so at this hour as far as what looks like the golden gate bridge and the fog tends to sometimes will hang out there all day. but certainly it's one of the last places, the clear that one of the places where the fog just kind of hangs out and gets trapped just because of

topography we are seeing some warming happening inland already in the mid to upper 60's 71 for antioch. still, the cool 50's back to the north bay lower 60's light up the east bay shoreline with san jose coming in at 65 if you squint, you can make it out just barely this front dropping south here with a line of very light clouds. but it's really the action we're involved in here. that's what we need is not going bring us rain will be nicer really in the clouds, but it will help clean our atmosphere a little bit. take care of some of this haze. it will also call our for temperatures a little bit here by giving us a good strong onshore. wind coupled with the local winds. we tend to get any way with daytime heating. you can see it here on future cast for look at rain or just kicked out of the way from this front dropping south. this is by mid-afternoon. it recovers a little tonight and maybe some coastal drizzle but not as aggressive as we saw today. so that's what you can expect for monday morning will be again, some coastal drizzle is a possibility and the return again, as we go all the way up to tuesday. look at those winds. here's the uptick that happens this afternoon. good

coverage, too, because sometimes we get the inland. heating is just focused on the valley's like the delta in the valleys in the east bay. but like everybody will get hit by this little bit more in the north bay as well. but again, acting not just at the surface but aloft, we're all that haze is and we'll see again the upper tick that happens for tomorrow. so that's a nice welcome relief. although we could get some rain out of it. that would be really nice. clearing and breezy today we got some leftover hayes will keep that in the forecast and temperatures inland really bounce back tomorrow. but around the bay. that may be a little slower may take until tuesday before the start moving late in the week is what we're watching, though, for for temperatures to get up to about 100 thursday friday and to keep going on in the seven-day and near about 80 going along the east bay shoreline. so there is little bit of the heat warm up going on and a week whisper of so monsoon moisture from the south 65 san francisco today. some scattered clouds to mention 71 for oakland. 81 san jose hazy and mild. there you see a couple lower 90's off to

vote threshold needed to advance the 1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure plan kron four's, washington, dc correspondent raquel martin has more on what's next for lawmakers. >> lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they're eager to get this legislation across the finish line. but final details continue to hold things up. the 1 trillion dollar bipartisan infrastructure bill has dodged another pothole on capitol hill. the motion is agreed to and yet another rare saturday session. senators voted to advance the bill west virginia democrat joe manchin helped write the legislation were compromised that will address our infrastructure needs without going overboard. we're one step closer to completing. >> this product, texas senator john cornyn was one of 18 republicans who joined democrats to push the bill forward but republicans aren't done trying to put their stamp on the bill to fund infrastructure projects in communities across our country

hour delay. not much of one but still kind of that kind of will hello. welcome to sfo. there's a come, but i'm coming anyway. we have this scenario right now with that fog kind of lingering a little bit. we expected to kind of mix out in the next hour or so temperature check. we have the upper 60's got off to the east bay 71 for antioch 50's for most of the north bay with 61 a bottle 65 for san jose. we do see this front coming by. and that's what's also driving these winds we tend to see them anyway with inland heating shore. but this is nice because this helps upstairs to clean things out a little bit. this is our best from this point forward. the only problem is the re intrusion of smoke from those fires. that's a wild by later this week. so hopefully that doesn't happen. looking at the more long range forecast models. thing to note here is a little whisper. monsoon moisture drifting up here by midweek a little bit. beyond that, you can see from the shot, but we have heat spike developing by the end of next week. the monsoon continues to

spike to watch out for temperatures start to get to the upper 90's near about a 100 or so. well. >> around this time the sky likes to give us a little show. the meteor shower is one of the best annual meteor showers and it peaks every year in mid august. it happens as the earth passes through the tail of the comet. swift tuttle. that's about all i know. so i'm here to give us the scoop on exactly why that causes a meteor shower is chabot space and science center adjunct astronomer gerald mckeegan gerald, always great to have you here. i've already told you this, but this always happens either right before or right after my birthday this year. it's the night of which is really fun. that's when we can see it the talk to me just a little bit why this happens. >> so range celestial fireworks for your birthday. is >> yes, i put in i put in an order straight to the universe. if rain.

>> so so this is an annual meteor shower fact. it's one of the best meteor showers so that we have every year. and as you mention, is caused by the swift tuttle. so if tunnel orbits around the sun. every 134 years ago and it leaves behind a stream of comments are mostly ice, it's got a lot dirt rock and pebbles and things like that. betty was in the ice. and as the comic gets close to the sun that i see sway and really says all those particles may stay in orbit around the sun and a stream of particles. the comments were, but passes very close to the air support. it and every year around early to mid august. the earth passes through that stream of particles left behind by the comet and we see that as a meteor shower. >> are some years better than

others in terms of being able to see. >> yes, huh. this stream of particles is not continuous across were, there are sort of clumps of particles. so some years we see more and some years we see less for this meteor shower. we've got a couple teams working for us. the main thing is it's going to be dark we own that wednesday night thursday morning. we don't have a loan to interfere with with say, a meteor shower. so we have nice dark skies that will allow you to see a lot of meteors. you can even and they, you know, semi dark skies search semi dark areas. you can expect to see somewhere around 50 or 60 meteors per if you get that far away from the city lights out in the country somewhere. you might see as many as a 100

per hour. so there are a lot of out there. just as a matter of finding a nice dark sky location to see them. >> just look straight up, where should we be looking. >> of the meteors will appear to come out of the if you follow the streak of the media here across the sky. they all seem to point back towards the constellation perseus hence the nale the meteor shower. what's actually happening is the is warming around the sun at about 18 miles per second. and we're plowing through that stream of particles left behind by the comet that makes it appear that the comet, the coming toward us from that direction. but you don't want to look just to the nation sky that you want to do is get out, lay out on the grass somewhere on a lawn chair or something so that you can see as much of whole sky as possible media streets across large parts of the sky. and so

you don't want to be looking with binoculars or a telescope. you want to look with your naked eye again usc as much to the skies. you can't. and every minute or so you should be able to see a meteor flying by. >> well, i know that you all are hossing a viewing at the chabot space and science center. i looked up online today. it looks like it's already sold out as long as you know, know hazy skies like what we've been dealing with the last couple of nights. you said no binoculars but around what time. exactly. should we start to see these will probably stay up a little late to. >> you have to stamp late view the meteor showers going to be wednesday night august 11th starting at around 11 o'clock at night and continuing into about 3, or 4 o'clock in the morning on the 12th. so this going to be an but if you're patient and like you say, you throw blanket out on the lawn or or get on a lawn chair or something. and
