have bad air that's not going to go anywhere for the whole weekend going to be hovering, right overhead pretty much not even mixed out too much during the afternoon heating not much the way of fog to start things off. but we do have that hazy sunshine, as you can see from the east bay shoreline. there u c berkeley shot even at the golden gate bridge. we see the same process as well. not much of a breeze will be a little bit going on this afternoon. but that's going to be hyper. hyper local. here's the air quality live coming in for you. and you can see the very poor in worst up in the mountains there as we head back to the bay conditions, improve a little bit moderate covers a good chunk of the bay where it's poor. as you can see down around fremont and portions of the peninsula. now, this is likely to be pushed slightly off towards the east after we get daytime heating a little bit and that doesn't bite in the marine layer, but not like we typically do because this highs the stock and allow it 60's over a good chunk of the real estate. so off to a warm start. 50's even up in the north bay. the breakdown for you today. 88 by 11 by 2.97

with plenty of inland areas over 100 will be dancing and all that coming up in just a bit. >> the smoke in the bay area. does represent a significant health hazard because we're all breathing and we're breathing the scent. >> we are sitting in the worst air quality. the bay area has seen all year. some parts of the bay area have had it worse than others. but yesterday it really seems we all got a taste of it. this was the scene friday afternoon and noticeably thick haze above highway 24 in walnut creek as well as over san francisco and you could barely see the golden gate bridge did all the pollutants in the air. experts say on days like these. you should avoid spending as much time outdoors as possible and make sure your windows and your doors are closed at your home. >> any level of particularly matter in the air. any level of poor air quality is not good for us. it's just a

degree. are the severity. i went outside to run. i just couldn't run. >> i go back inside and just worked out inside the house and close the windows. >> if you do have to go out and spend an extended amount of senator out of time outside where a good mask doctors are recommending a tight fitting and 95 mask. if you have one, the air was so bad in pittsburgh friday. all jv and varsity football games had to be canceled at pittsburg high school last night was supposed to be the season opener. but with all the smoke in the air. officials determined it was simply too unhealthy for those kids to play. the conditions we're seeing are due to the many wildfires burning in northern california. the most dangerous right now is the caldor fire up in eldorado county. as you can see on the map, it's burning very close to the lake tahoe basin. now approaching the town of strawberry on both sides of highway 50 an additional 400 firefighters have now been sent to try and contain that

blaze. cal fire says more than 145,000 acres have burned so far in the caldor fire destroying at least 600, 50 buildings containment is up to 19% this morning. fire crews say the caldor fire has proven to be so difficult to fight that this week actually pushed back the projected date for full containment from early next week. 2 september 8th. but even that estimate is 10 us there. we know the bad air from the flames will stick around. through at least this weekend. although no evacuation orders have been declared for south lake tahoe. people who live or vacation. there are not taking any chances. we actually spoke to a bay area man who says he's trusted his gut feeling and got out. >> it was clear in the morning. but in the afternoon, very quickly, the smoke came in and it didn't make a difference. if you had a kn 95 masks or n 95 nash mast. you could still feel those particles of action. you know

acting swiftly on president joe biden's promised to retaliate for thursday's bombing. family members and elected officials, meanwhile, have started to publicly identify those service members who were killed in the afghanistan terror attack this week. this is a 20 year-old marine. kareem he is a southern california native based at camp pendleton survived by his mother, father and siblings in the middle here is 22 year-old navy hospital corpsman max soviak. he was from ohio. his family described him as a wonderful son who loved his family. his community and was proud to serve in the u.s. navy. they say he was excited to make the navy up career and right here is 22 year-old marine hunter lopez. he was also from southern california. according to the riverside sheriff's association, lopez was a riverside sheriff's explorer scout for 3 years at the palm desert station and plan to join his father on the force after returning from his

current deployment. and this is 20 year-old marine riley mccollum. he's from wyoming and his wife is expecting a baby in just 3 weeks. one of mccollum sisters says he was a marine before he knew he was allowed to be a marine. he was on his first deployment to afghanistan. these are just a few of the 13 service members who died in the attacks earlier this week. coming up here on the kron 4 morning news a statewide vaccine mandate is being considered for california. we have details. >> on the proposed legislation. plus, we're only 16 days away from the state's recall election. what you need to know if you plan on voting the break. scoot over. squeeze in. pull up a chair. ♪

>> while the smoke continues to affect the bay area. the south lake tahoe region is being bombarded with hazardous thick smoke as gurajpal sangha reports, many businesses are now suffering during what should be a successful weekend. >> the counter fire rages on and it's smoke making south lake tahoe look unrecognizable it's insane. i've never sekn smoke like this. my entire life. the smoke ripping away like tumbles clarity. get a seat. you could smell it. you know, i mean, it's it's pretty crazy if you're totally re board and ryan randall are in town for a bachelor party.

their friends from sonora left the washington fire thursday hoping for bluer skies. i was expecting a lot more lively. i've never, ever in my life seen 50 scooters. you know, i some 50 people on scooters but i've never seen 50 scooters standing just standing just sitting there with nobody on it. the smoke both the hazardous level leaving businesses and the smoke has decimated the hotel motel industry and southlake not many representatives want to go on camera. put a representative with base camp tells me last weekend there were booked because of a concert happening this weekend. but that concert has since been canceled and out of a 179 rooms. only 3 remain occupied. just doing what we can with what we have. bruce beeler with california burger company says he is surprised by the smokes impact. probably the slowest friday i've ever seen. even covid included aside from the that for shutdowns like this is the most quiet i've ever seen this corner. i've been here for 5 but he adds this is just another challenge they will have to overcome.

moderate category don't think we'll have much in the way of winds on our sunday either to mix things out and slightly till monday that we don't get that machinery going to really get that coastal lee impact. here's the golden gate bridge for you there. the orange skies you can see off towards the distance as well. the flags, not the one much and won't for today. air quality live. as you can see, very bad up in the mountains heading back to the bay. you can see improves a little bit, but these oranges are making their encroachment across the east bay shoreline even into the peninsula. little bit. you will see this will probably again go back over the east bay hills a little bit because you get all that in heating that's going to drive a slight breeze going on but not much help the moderate category and i suspect this will stay in place tomorrow as well. here are the current winds for your right now. a lot of calm in the east bay. as you can see, again with that high parked right up on top of us. a little bit of a breeze in the city. as you can see, temperature check. we have mostly 60's on the board 50's up to the north bay antioch 7164 san jose and 59 for san

francisco. so for the breakdown going on here for you today for the weekend high pressure dome, hot and hazy 80's will go on for a lot of the bay coverage through 100 inland early into the week. we finally get a little bit of that coastal breeze working to try to include try to improve some conditions least in the immediate bay here, warm, 70's going on to the bay upper 80's while inland that's an improvement temperatures. but then look at this. by the latter portion. the week, sunny. and we can use the word mild as we see temperatures 60's for the bay, lower 80's going on well inland. so we're going to flip things around a little bit. sky's not that blue. but you get the general idea 81 again. hazy sunshine going on. 92 oakland really tells you how much the winds are not here today. 93 checking in for san jose. obviously the inland areas temperatures will be baking. very nicely, be on the scene note with 90's up to the north bay. but again, look at this 81 san francisco, 74 even for half moon bay. the beaches will be quite warm as coming up, a little bit. of course. well, the 4 zone forecast for you and also check in what's

going on with item that set new hurricane that just developed in the gulf of mexico. noel. thanks, dave. >> while the threat of the caldor fire is forcing some vacationers to cancel their lake tahoe reservations. kron 4 news viewer tells us air bnb is refusing to issue her a refund crystal says she booked a property through air bnb back in july given the severity of the current situation, though she decided it would be best to cancel her family trip. but she says the property host refused to issue a refund. she says she tried repeatedly to contact air bnb. but they told her they'd issue a refund if evacuations were put in place for the property. they basically said no, sorry, nothing. we can do. it doesn't honor policy. >> i even point out like hey, and i think you it's says it's unsafe environment for your policy. you would reimburse the person i spoke to could clarify what unsafe met and their thank you. and it was just incredibly frustrating.

air bnb. these terms authorize refunds when the physical location of a property includes hazards. >> that could be expected to adversely affect the guests stay in a statement air bnb says in part there, quote, extenuating circumstances policy has been activated for other areas affected by the caldor fire hosts and guests with eligible reservations can cancel penalty free. the company says it's closely monitoring the situation. if you are thinking of getting out of the area to escape the smoke and haze southwest airlines may be your best bet. going forward. the airlines cutting the number of flights for the remainder of 2021. the company says the goal is to fix operational issues that have plagued the airline causing flight delays and cancellations to soar. southwest will operate around 3300 daily flights in september and october. the dallas-based airline says it plans to similar cuts in november and december with the exception for the holidays.

up tonight. well, football season is here and we have a bay area showdown coming up on sunday. the forty-niners host the raiders in their final preseason game of 2021, you know, the atmosphere at levi stadium will not feel like a preseason game. this will be the first time the silver and black will play in front of a bay area crowd since the team left for los vegas. and you know, the rivalry is still alive and well. both teams have high expectations this season and both should be playoff contenders if they stay healthy and perform up to expectations. plus, add in the rivalry and both coaches know sunday. we'll be fine. >> i was like in our fans are pumped up about self so that makes it cooler still preseason game i'm not going to sit there and get too excited about it. i don't get too caught up in those rivalries. but i think it's always more more fun. one, the fans more into it and we'll have great memories there. no doubt. >> looking forward. honestly, too. seeing these young guys compete. we're going to play a lot of our young players finish this evaluation process

good saturday morning to you. it is 7.30 right now. want to get you a check of your forecast here. it's going to be a warm one yet again today on dave. >> yeah, good well, good morning, everybody. we're talking about those inland temperatures popping a 100 plus yet again, a very sultry day and coupled with all of that. the air quality will be bad and it looks like we'll do the same thing again tomorrow to we finally start to get some relief here of the winds coming in from the coast. again, that will come in probably by tomorrow by monday. afternoon. first things first, a couple beauty shots for you. quotation marks this the east bay shoreline, as you can see in kind of the

orange hue. you can see a little bit in place as as well as sfo. no delays happening there. but welcome to mars a little bit. it's what it looks like at the ballpark this afternoon for the temperatures mid 80's going on hot and hazy hardly any breeze at all. might get one of the northwest at about 5 tomorrow won't be as bad because temperatures will be relaxing ever so slightly in the game is a little later in the afternoon temperature check. we have the 60's 71 going on for antioch 50's up to the north bay. 64. meanwhile, san jose and word is building on these numbers. want to give you a quick check on those winds were going to get a little bit of breeze going on this afternoon only because probably fortunate, we have kind of an inland waterway like the bay here because that provides a little bit of this thermal gradient that drives a little bit in the way surface wind. so even though we don't have any help aloft. that is fighting us a bit with this high. we'll get a breeze today and tomorrow. but that will be very local in its not so not driven to help clean this all out. that doesn't get here, probably

till monday. the breakdown 88 by 11 by 2, we're talking 97 your 4 zone forecast. the extended and look at ida coming up at the well. >> thanks, dave. now to our top story this half hour proof of full covid-19 vaccination can soon be required here in california. talks in sacramento continue on the proposed legislation which is led by east bay assemblywoman buffy wicks and it would require customers and employees to prove they're fully vaccinated before being allowed in places like restaurants bars, gyms and hotels. the bill could be sent to the governor's desk within the next 3 weeks. experts say a statewide vaccine mandate would be legal. >> the state has a right to pass reasonable regulation. the public health. even if you think the fears was individual rights isn't everybody. it does seem to be those who are employed in the public places. and then those who want to attend public places so there's even a little bit more choice in the sense for up to peer. experts say legal

challenges to the mandate would also likely fail. >> state lawmakers still have to decide, though, whether they want to pass a bill with less than 3 weeks left in the legislative session or if they want to wait until january. a new study out of the uk finds people sick with the delta covid variant are twice as likely to need hospital care. this is compared to those with the alpha variant that was previously widespread and much of the world. the study which was published in the lancet and reinforces the importance of vaccinations, researchers examined more than 40,000 cases between march and may to compare those hospitalization rates. delta accounts for almost all covid cases in the u k today. in the meantime, more job listings are now requiring covid-19 vaccinations indeed. dot com says postings requiring candidates to be vaccinated are up 90% from july. analysts says the pfizer vaccine

future attempts absolutely. but i won't get into the specifics of what those are the pentagon now says there was only one explosion outside the airport's abbey gate with no second explosion at a nearby hotel. major general hank taylor says the attack did impact evacuation efforts a little less thing of. >> what we would say total capacity of people in and around. >> kate's more than 12,000 people were evacuated in the last 24 hours. i asked pentagon spokesman john kirby about the ongoing safety of those evacuees and u.s. troops. should americans expect more us casualties in the next few days you don't want to see any more casualties. that's why we are monitoring the threat streams very closely. president joe biden was born friday. that another terror attack in kabul is likely. and the next few days of the mission will be the most dangerous but kirby says the defense department remains focused on completing that mission. it is time to end america's on the ground.

in the war in afghanistan and we're going to execute that reporting in washington. i'm kelly meyer. meanwhile, white house officials say more than 109,000 people have been evacuated since august 14th, which is the day before. >> the taliban took over the capital of kabul. many of those thousands of refugees are arriving here in the bay area which does have the largest afghan population in the united states. the director of the oakland chapter of the international rescue committee has already helped dozens of refugees this month. she actually explain to us how people here can help. >> donate to our soft landing fund. it's a fun that goes directly to rental assistance for families. other ways is to let us know that there are landlords out there that are going to understand the experiences of refugees coming in with no credit history no employment no references and being willing to accept on the lease.

>> advocates for california's food industry are protesting again against a new law which they believe will make it a lot harder to buy pork. they're hoping to delay prop 12 taking effect scheduled for january. 1st of next year. it's aimed at encouraging more humane living conditions for pigs and other livestock, meaning unless the animals are kept in larger pens. they won't be sold for use here in california. critics of the law argue it will restrict almost all the port that normally comes into the state. they say they don't have a problem with the law itself that the regulations for producers to follow are still not finalized. >> you know, how are these out-of-state producers supposed to prepare to keep the supply chain moving of pork products coming to the california. you have to remember 99.8% of all pork

products come from outside of california. >> now despite the concerns the new law could take effect january first the state department of food and agriculture says it does not have the authority to delay it. more than a dozen utah. firefighters are heading to northern california now to help fight the caldor fire utah's e mack task force is sending 22 of its members to help local firefighters near lake tahoe. it's the 6th deployment for this group. the latest task force will be gone for 18 days. the all volunteer group has been in high demand this year. now it's being. >> every single year. for an extended period of time, not just during the summer but during the shoulder seasons as well during the spring in the fall as well. we're anticipating this moving forward for the next few years. we're expecting it. >> this summer. the mac crews have also been called to help fight wildfires up in montana and oregon. but california is where crews are needed most this weekend. another group of

>> powerful wind and rain pounding cuba as hurricane ida made landfall. there friday afternoon. the storm was upgraded to a category one hurricane just before it battered the island. the storm is now moving into the gulf coast. louisiana's governor has issued mandatory evacuation orders for some communities saying this storm could be devastating. >> by nightfall tomorrow night. you need to be where you intend ride out the storm. and you need to be postured as you would want to be as that storm approaches. you. >> this will be a life altering storm for those who are prepared. >> ida is expected to make landfall in louisiana tomorrow as a category 4 hurricane sunday, of course, is the 16th anniversary of hurricane katrina. i know dave spahr has been tracking this since last week, especially dave, what are we looking at right now. >> it's almost like katrina 2

a kind of thing it looks like it's hitting almost the exact same type of spot as well. that's all the colors ation you see there. obviously hurricane warnings, as noel said, it's a category one as we speak right now makes it just a minor hurricane. max winds at 85. but this water here, this time of year. it's bathtub water. it's an unusual to get surf temperatures that even approach 90 or something that's like pools in southern california. i mean, it's just really, really warm. so that's exactly what the systems need. the upper level systems. conditions are also favoring development so way we go. look at a pop to about 4 category 4 by landfall on sunday is what we're looking at there. that's why they have all that conversation for that. but quickly, it does to dissipate. as you can see, dropping off to tropical storm strength and back to a tropical depression by that point so it won't be long lasting in fast-moving, which is another good thing as well. maybe minimize some of the damage with that. meanwhile, just quickly on the west coast here. this is nora category one, it's actually taking the best track to keep itself alive as if it knew

better. but right here into the gulf into this gulf here. look at what happened to still hold as a category one, if it was on land, it wouldn't do so. and then it finally hits mexico, as you can see, as a tropical storm and stays pretty much the south it throws all this tropical moisture to the u.s. southwest, but there was some thinking perhaps model runs that perhaps was going to strike california coast as a possible but that's usually where those tropical systems on the west coast tend to come for 10 ago. meanwhile, here's what it looks like in half moon bay, hazy sunshine trying to clear out whatever fog we have back to the pollution and the bay, as you can see, we've got yellows in place over most of the real estate. but a little bit in the way of some oranges. once we start to get some of those winds that will improve slightly for us. and back to what the projections say in our forecast, there's the monsoon. the gets kicked the lie by what's left of nora as she comes towards to the north in western mexico temperature check for the 4 zone forecast 81 san francisco daly city 77 pacifica at about

>> we are 2 weeks away from the 20th anniversary of september 11th a day filled with emotion and heartache for many, but especially for those directly affected by the terror attacks that morning. the world trade center was filled with people expecting a regular work day when tragedy struck including a northeast ohio man who survived the attack. he sat down with reporter matt wright to share his story. >> you probably remember where you were. that tuesday morning. that's to my memory forever. and i could tell the same story and it will change of that. it's hard to believe that this actually happened. and for tore september 11th wasn't something he saw play out on tv. it was something he lived through. i was eager to. >> to do the training and also eager to get it over with. >> the conflict man was in new york for a second day of training with morgan stanley on the 61st floor of the south

tower of the world trade center when the first plane crashed into the other tower. i knew something was wrong when i saw a bunch of. >> paper fly around outside the windows. look like a kind of a ticker tape parade kind of thing. do you have any idea that a plane had crashed into the building at that moment. you know, later on we started to get some phone calls as his family watched the events unfold here at home. steve began a 45 minute long track down the stairs despite announcements telling people to return to their offices. >> we had firefighters and emergency personnel heading up. we're heading down and the same stairs he was halfway down when he felt the building shake as the second plane hit close to the floor. he had just escaped. what were you feeling? are you panicking probably even scarier than the initial jolt that move the building was. >> every minute or so you would hear bunch us steel and concrete moving around up above your head. steve

navigated to an exit and on to the streets funding them filled with debris and injured people on the street. i saw big chunk of the engine that was in like a lobby of a bank that it was. >> you know, blown a hole right through the glass building. he then moves north away from the burning buildings when he heard a loud noise. a sudden that i see the building falling right in front of him. that's what that was and that's what was making the noise and i just turned and ran steve ducked into a building as that cloud of dust and debris swept over. then he continued on getting far enough away to find a working pay phone to call his wife back home in northeast ohio, everything happens for a reason and. >> yeah, i had more to do his wife traveled to new york to pick steve up and bring him home to their 2 young daughters, a 3rd daughter born a year later. a wife young. young, a young family to take care of him. sorry, i got the

>> the next space x resupply mission for the international space station has been delayed due to some bad weather. this is some video of past launches. the 23rd cargo mission was set to launch just after 1230 this morning from the kennedy space center in florida. but it's now set for tomorrow morning. just after midnight, the capsules expected to carry 4800 pounds of supplies and science payloads to assist astronauts up there with a variety of the experiments they're working on one of them will study how plants respond to the environmental stress of microgravity. this is key for long-duration missions in the future when crews are going to need to grow food to supplement their supplies. now this as it's still on track. meanwhile, to put the first woman and next man on the surface of the moon in 2024. that's despite some budget and technical problems. the 2024

additional 400 firefighters have now been sent to try and contain the blaze. cal fire says more than 145,000 acres have been burned in the caldor fire and it's destroyed at least 600, 50 building so far. containment is up to 19% this morning. fire crews say the caldor fire has proven to be so difficult to fight that they've actually pushed back the projected date for full containment from early next week. now back to september. 8th even that estimate, though, is 10 us. we know the bad air from these flames will stick around through at least this weekend. although no evacuation orders have been declared for south lake tahoe. people who live or vacation. there aren't taking any chances. we spoke with a bay area man who says he trusted his gut feeling and got out. >> it was clear in the morning. but in the afternoon, very quickly, the smoke came in and it didn't make a difference. if you had a kn 95 masks or n 95 nash mast. you

the military acting swiftly now on president joe biden's promised to retaliate for thursday's bombing. family members and elected officials have started to publicly identify the service members who were killed in the afghanistan terror attack earlier this week. far left over here is current a marina kareem nikoui. he is a southern california native based at camp pendleton survived by his mother, father and his siblings in the middle is 22 year-old navy hospital corpsman max soviak. he was from ohio. his family describes him as a wonderful son who loved his family his community and he was proud to serve in the u.s. navy. they say he was excited to make the navy career. and here is 22 year-old marine hunter lopez. he was also from southern california. according to the riverside sheriff's association, lopez was a riverside sheriff's explorer scout for 3 years at the palm desert station and he planned to join his father on the

actually bus stop forecast highs. we have another day. i think that happened a couple of weeks ago like that. but this time we're still going with that 100 plus going on minor relief in the afternoon for the bay. once we get a little bit of a drift will call it on shore just because of inland heating. here's what's going on. east bay shoreline. they see all the oranges are firmly in place. there from our sky conditions. golden gate bridge looks a little better there. we can make out some blue and whatever hazy fog. we have seems to be mixing out for right now. not much in the way of winds. however, expected with this back to that air quality. obviously it's very bad hp in the mountains across central 1alley doesn't improve much in the bay area. comparatively much better moderate for good chunk of the bay poured out of the south. again, we start to get a little bit of a breeze going on that should help clean out around the bay. but inland is probably going to stay in kind of orange conditions as far as really are having any right now. we need to have more heating going on. actually, it's the differentiation and temperatures words, more mild. comparatively speaking around

later, amtrak police in chicago were notified the suspect would soon be arriving in the area when they confronted him. they say he shot at them. that's when an officer shot taylor who died later at a local hospital investigation is underway. community members and oakley are expressing condolences after a 12 year-old boy died wednesday when the car he was in collided with a train. it happens near the intersection of east cypress road and main street. close to delta vista middle school in oakley. the boy has been identified as josh schafer. friends are describing him as smart, funny and loving and will be deeply missed schaefer's half-sister was driving the car and was badly injured in the crash. authorities say all signals in the area. we're working properly. new details this morning on the cause of death for east bay runner. philip crate. check investigators in

story this half hour proof of full covido19 vaccination to enter some businesses could soon be mandatory across the entire state talks in sacramento continue that on that proposed legislation. it would require customers and employees to prove they are fully vaccinated against covid before being allowed in places like restaurants, bars, gyms and hotels. this bill could be sent to the governor's desk within the next 3 weeks. it's considered urgent meeting. it needs 2 thirds approval from the legislature to take effect. challenges are expected to that legislation, though, if it does pass and some are questioning whether it would even stand up in court kron four's terisa stasio talk to legal experts about what could happen. just a few months ago being fully vaccinated was rare and getting a shot require patience and persistence. >> but now having a shot is more commonplace and if a bill passes could become a statewide requirement to keep your job attend a concert or access any public event. is

games had to be canceled at pittsburg high school last night was supposed to be the season opener but with all of the smoke in the air. officials determined it was simply too unhealthy for those athletes to play in. those conditions we're seeing are due to all the wildfires burning up in northern california. the most dangerous, though, right now as the caldor fire in eldorado county. as you can see on the map, it is burning close to the lake tahoe basin approaching the town of strawberry on both sides of highway 50 at this point. an additional 400 firefighters have now been sent in to try and help contain the blaze. we do have an update from this morning. cal fire saying the fire has burned more than 149,000 acres and it's destroyed at least 600, 50 buildings. containment still sitting at 19% this morning. fire crews say the caldor fire has proved to be so difficult to fight this week. it's a push back. the projected date

for full containment to september 8th even that estimate those pretty 10 us. we know that air from all these flames are expected to stick around, at least through the weekend. now, although evacuation orders have not been declared for south lake tahoe just yet. people who live or vacation there are not taking any chances. we spoke with a bay area man who says he trusted his gut feeling and got out. >> it was clear in the morning. but in the afternoon, very quickly, the smoke came in and it didn't make a difference. if you had a kn 95 masks or n 95 nash mast. you could still feel a little particles of action. you know that bash as we speak in the house, that means that asking kerry fire. >> sean pickett says he originally went up to the top, went up to tahoe to create some defensible space around his home. but he soon decided to leave because he was afraid caldor fire might shut down highway 88. >> you can track the air quality in your neighborhood

survived by his mother, father and siblings. he died in the attack in the middle. 22 year-old navy hospital corpsman max soviak. he was from ohio. his family describes him as a wonderful son who loved his family. his community and was proud to serve in the u.s. navy. they say he was very excited to make the navy a career. and here is 22 year-old hunter lopez. he was also a marine from southern california. according to the riverside sheriff's association. he was a riverside sheriff's explorer scout for 3 years at the palm desert station and he planned to join his father on the force after returning from his current deployment. and this is 20 year-old marine riley mccollum. he's come from wyoming. his wife is expecting a baby in just 3 weeks. one of mccollum sister says he was a marine before he knew he was allowed to be a marine. he was on his first deployment to afghanistan. these are just a few of the 13 service members who died in thursday's attack.

>> thanks, dave. to our top story now this half hour proof of full covid-19 vaccination could soon be required all across the state of california talks in sacramento continue on some proposed legislation led by east bay. assemblywoman buffy wicks. it would require customers and employees to prove they're fully vaccinated before being allowed in places like restaurants, bars, gyms and hotels. the bill could be sent to the governor's desk within the next 3 weeks. experts say a statewide vaccine mandate would be legal. >> the state has a right to pass reasonable are the public health. even if you think the fears was individual rights isn't everybody. it does seem to be those who are employed in these public places. and then those who want to attend public places so there's even a little bit more choice in the sense for up to peer. >> experts say legal challenges to the mandate would also likely fail. state lawmakers still have to decide, though, whether they

want to pass the bill with less than 3 weeks left in the legislative session or if they want to wait until january. a new study out of the uk finds people sick with the delta covid variant are twice as likely to need hospital care. this is compared to those with the alpha variant that was previously widespread and much of the world. the study published in the lancet reinforces the importance of vaccinations, researchers examined more than 40,000 cases between march and may to try and compare those hospitalization rates. delta variant accounts for almost all covid cases there in the u k. meantime, more job listings are now requiring covid-19 vaccinations indy dot com says postings requiring candidates to be vaccinated are up 90% from july. analysts say the pfizer vaccine receiving that full fda approval earlier this week. it's a game changer for employers. a lot of them were waiting for that approval before mandating the shot.

according to a recent gallup poll. 52 1% of all workers favor vaccine mandates on the job. amid the surge in covid cases. many hospitals across the country are in need of nurses, including right here in the bay area. the lack of staff has some patients feeling worried they are getting the right medical attention. one patient told kron four's michelle kingston, the lack of staffing at good samaritan hospital left her feeling unsafe. >> every time i put my light on. nobody would come. >> all the crew says been good samaritan hospital in san jose. since the beginning of august. she was admitted for stomach issues and has since undergone surgery. she says it takes up to 45 minutes at times for nurses to respond to requests for help in her room. they didn't have the staffing. it's not really the nurses fault. it's that there's no staff here. good samaritan hospital spokesperson janine de la vega said in a statement that the hospital strives to deliver the best possible treatment and care experience for every patient. the overall

nursing shortage here and nationally has made it difficult for us to keep that promise in some instances when shortages happen. we access additional support from nursing staffing agencies. we like most bay area hospitals are recruiting and hiring to ensure we can deliver the high quality care our community expects from us. david vegas as covid-19 has challenged front-line workers in hospitals across the country. are struggling with staffing. they're in need of nurses to provide patient care and are doing what they can to retain and recruit new nurses did something really bad would happen. who's going to find if you put your light on you know, call comes. as for olga crews, she says she'll be at the hospital for a bit longer she says the care she is receiving is great. it's just the time it takes to receive it. that's concerning. you should feel safe. >> i don't feel safe because i know that if i put on my life when i really needed it. nobody comes so. anybody would

feel unsafe right in san jose. >> another big story we're following this morning. u.s. officials once again warning americans to stay away from the kabul airport because of serious security threats with the military preparing to leave the war-torn country in just 3 days time. the pentagon says it's preparing and bracing for more attacks. >> by isis k our washington correspondent kellie meyer has the latest. >> in the final days of the draw down the risk to us troops and evacuees on the ground is growing. we still believe there are credible threats. i'd say specific credible threats. the pentagon says thursday's deadly explosion could be just the first attempt to disrupt evacuation efforts. we certainly are and would expect future attempts absolutely. but i won't get into the specifics of what those are the pentagon now says there was only one explosion outside

>> white house officials say more than 109,000 people have been evacuated since august 14th. that's the day before the taliban took over the capital of kabul. many of those 1000 refugees are arriving here in the bay area which has the largest afghan population in the united states. the director of the oakland chapter of the international rescue committee has already helped dozens of refugees this month. she explained to us how people here can help. >> donate or soft landing fund. it's a fun that goes directly to rental assistance for families. other ways is to let us know that there are landlords out there that are going to understand the experiences of refugees coming in with no credit history no no references and being willing to accept on the lease. >> kron four's phillipe djegal all spoke with 2 military veterans who served in the middle east now watching the same images of that chaotic situation from afar. both are

>> powerful wind and rain pounding cuba as hurricane ida made landfall friday afternoon. the storm was upgraded to a category one hurricane just before it battered the island. it's now moving into the gulf coast and headed straight for louisiana. louisiana's governor has issued mandatory evacuation orders saying this storm could be devastating. >> by nightfall tomorrow night. you need to be where you intend ride out the storm.

and you need to be postured as you would want to be as that storm approaches. you. >> this will be a life altering storm for those who are prepared. >> ida is expected to make landfall in louisiana tomorrow as a category 4 hurricane. the sunday of course, is the 16th anniversary of hurricane katrina. a lot of people, of course, bracing for this. dave spahr has been tracking ida. he usually once it hits landfall, it kind of breaks apart. but hitting cuba. and then now it's ramping up into going to be a category 4. that's pretty intense day. >> know there's that thing about this is this going over warm waters of the gulf of mexico. so that's really giving a lot of energy. this is the time of year when the these types of parts of the world is perfect. for tropical development in these things and go from a tropical depression to a major hurricane over a weekend which we're seeing something like that. now it's category one now and heading north. it looks like it's making a

beeline louisiana. new orleans will be on the eastern side of the system. so therefore, that's where most of the rougher weather tends to be with the systems on the east side. good news is it's a quick mover. so even though we've got these max winds at one 30 projected by that time category 4. it continues to move fairly quickly that we want. we like seeing that by tuesday as you can see, and wednesday already a tropical depression and heavy rains expected up the ohio valley. meanwhile on our nor up. that's a category one. never going to become anything more than that. it's taking gulf of california route perfectly to maintain its strength a little bit because the eye is going to be over that warm water as well. this is actually warmer than the gulf of mexico. so that's going to keep it alive for a little while. finding hits mexico's a tropical storm and then falls apart. the remnants get thrown to the southwest. so that's going to fortify their monsoon. good news from our standpoint. is that going to stay all south not go up. the spine of the

>> you probably remember where you were. that tuesday morning. that's to my memory forever. and i could tell the same story and it will change your bed. it's hard to believe that this actually happened for tore september 11th wasn't something he saw play out on tv. it was something he lived through. i was eager to. >> to do the training and also the year to get it over with. >> the man was in new york for a second day of training with morgan stanley on the 61st floor of the south tower of the world trade center when the first plane crashed into the other tower. i knew something was wrong when i saw a bunch of. >> paper flying around outside the windows. look like a kind of a ticker tape parade kind of thing. do you have any idea that a plane had crashed into the building at that moment. you know, later on we started to get some phone calls as his family watched the events unfold here at home. steve began a 45 minute long track down the stairs despite

announcements telling people to return to their offices. >> we had firefighters and emergency personnel heading up. we're heading down and the same stairs he was halfway down when he felt the building shake as the second plane hit close to the floor. he had just escaped. what were you feeling where you panicking probably even scarier than the initial jolt that move the building was. >> you know, every minute or so you would hear bunch us steel and concrete moving around up above your head. steve navigated to an exit and on to the streets funding them filled with debris and injured people on the street. i saw big chunk of the engine that was in like a lobby of a bank that it was. >> you know, blown a hole right through the glass building. he then moves north away from the burning buildings when he heard a loud noise. a sudden that i see the building falling right in front of me. that's what that was. and that's what was making the noise and i just turned and ran steve ducked into a building as that cloud

of dust and debris swept over. then he continued on getting far enough away to find a working pay phone to call his wife back home in northeast ohio, everything happens for a reason. >> yeah, i had more to do his pick steve up and bring him - home to their 2 young daughters, a 3rd daughter born a year later. had a wife young. young, a young family to take care of him. sorry, i got the chance to do that. 20 years later, the images of that day still resonate with steve. so do the moments of heartbreak and compassion. he says he'll never forget. yeah, definitely that's for sure. mathematically look at what are the chances of being in that building on that day. and then being able to escape and a lot of people take it up. a lot of people didn't in copley, matt wright, fox 8 news.

>> welcome back. the space x resupply mission for the international space station has been delayed due to some bad weather. this is some video of past launches. the 23rd cargo mission was set to launch just after 1230 this morning from the kennedy space center in florida. but there's some bad weather so they couldn't do it. it's now set for tomorrow morning just after midnight, the capsule is expected to carry 4800 pounds of supplies and science payloads to assist astronauts with a variety of experiments
