>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron 00:00am morning news at 7. >> good morning. thanks for joining us here on the kron 00:00am morning news. >> i'm noelle bellow. it's sunday. august 29th 07:00am. we've got a lot to get to this morning, but we want to start off by looking at the weather forecast. dave, it was actually a little misty and san francisco this morning. i was surprised by that after such warm days. yeah, we have little bit fog sneak in a bit. it was it wasn't really everywhere, though, actually got see awry in the predawn hours up in the north a little bit there up beetlejuice is still there. by the way.

>> and as far as our forecast is concerned, a little minor improvement here. and we do have the fog that noel was talking about. here is a look like at the u c a shot from u c berkeley. as you can see, kind of covered up the east bay shoreline a little bit now that does mean we have some minor improvements for certainly san francisco in around the immediate. they but inland. it's because it's still going to be much the same golden gate is completely covered up by all this fog as well about that air quality. well, we're still looking other spare the air day today. there you see some green making its way across san francisco off to portions of the east bay. but moderate over good chunk of real estate might see some of the poor quality sneak in there in portions of the east bay over the east bay hills. little bit later on. temperature check. we have the upper 50's near about 60 for oakland 58 san francisco 50's up to the north bay. 64 for san jose. breaking the day down about 84 by 11. 2 o'clock 95. we still may make it to about 100 and some selective spots. but relief is coming this week. we'll get into more of that coming up.

credible threat to the warning comes as top officials caution another terror attack is likely in the next 24 to 36 hours, which would be the second attack targeting the airport in less than a week. the pentagon carried out a drone strike against isis fighters in afghanistan's nangarhar province on friday. retaliating against islamic state militants who claimed responsibility for that attack that killed 13 us service members. >> without specifying any future plans. i will say that we will continue to have the ability to defend ourselves and to leverage over the horizon capability to conduct counter terrorism operations as needed. >> military officials say there were no civilian casualties during the drone strike on friday, the president's deadline for evacuating americans and others from afghanistan is set for tuesday. august 31st. here at home. a large show of support on display in san francisco. demonstrators took

>> turning to our wildfire coverage. now the caldor fire burning up in eldorado county continues to grow that fire has now burned more than 152,000 acres. it's destroyed at least 471 homes and it stands at 19%. containment this morning. we're learning to people and 2 firefighters have been injured by the flames. people in the town of iona offered food clothing and more to evacuees of the caldor fire rowena shaddox talk to volunteers and those who found a little more and what they were looking for. >> families tell me they were very appreciative to find some necessities here, but also to find something they feel is essential. >> some verses for inspiration. just some. you know, encourage for those that are dealing with. all the

craziness that's going on with these fires chilly zavala and her 10 year-old daughter charlotte set up a prayerful for anyone who needed some shade of people need to know that that. >> that got there and to just have that. reassurance and know that, you know, even even in hard times, he's watching over us even in hard times right you're ready. i'm organizer. jessica. lynn lee doesn't know anyone directly affected by the fires. >> but felt this was something she needed to do. i wanted to create a space that people can come to get what they need. and we have somebody who is providing a hot lunch and just make it something that they can get away from where they are and maybe have a great spot were point. they're just like everyone karina repay and her son needed this bright spot while her husband stayed home in somerset dosing lights not only around their home but their neighbors and anyone who needed help. so it's so nice

says the system has strengthened into a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. ida is expected to make landfall this afternoon. she arrives on the 16th anniversary of hurricane katrina. jack royer joins us now live from new orleans where residents and leaders are preparing for the worst this morning. jack. >> no. well, you know, those wind speeds one 50 what's expected to make it a category 4. that's just 6 miles an hour sustained winds away from being a cat 5. so there is great concern this morning about this storm and what it brings with it. a look behind me at these trees blowing. this will give you a decent idea of the wind. this is nothing compared to what this storm is going to pack when it makes landfall in just a few hours. but you can see people are still walking down the streets. some people have chosen to evacuate. others are saying, you know what, we're going to stay put and ride this thing out across the street that you can tell by everything. how severe the wind is. and we'll tell you it's it's up and down right

now. we've seen sheets of rain at times and other times like now it's pretty dry. and just windy. so they're getting ready for this. take a look at the french quarter just a short time ago on this sunday. not many people out. we were just down on canal street walking around. there are not many doing anything besides taking it all in really we spoke to a few folks. one guy said he didn't have any renters insurance. so we wanted to be here to make sure his stuff was ok, he sent his family to evacuate, though they were among the many we saw in bumper to bumper traffic headed out of town yesterday when the mayor said there was simply not enough time to order an evacuation of new orleans, but she was urging people to still leave while they can. as you can tell, there are plenty of people have decided not to leave. some of them say they have to stay here and work other say just bring it on. i did. they're ready to take on this cat 4 powerful storm even as leaders and first responders warned this could be and likely will be very dangerous. noel. >> jack, i know new orleans and the state of louisiana has been dealing large covid-19

outbreak. i know that that's a concern of officials as well. >> it is indeed there is beefed up staffing at local hospitals here to be ready for the possibility of injuries related to this storm for one. and there are many people from out of this area asking why didn't they move hospital patients. why didn't they evacuate them? the short answer is hospitals in neighboring states in this region are also overwhelmed as our louisiana's with covid-19 patients. so grave concern from leaders from locals, from pretty much everybody about what could lie ahead in the next 2448 hours and pass that jack, why no, we'll check in with you again in the next hour. thanks for that live report. >> with a close look at ida. we're turning now to meteorologist dave spahr. he's been tracking the storm, dave about how much time do the folks there in new orleans well as new orleans because maybe a little longer because the first has to make landfall. that's the first order business which is defined as the eye completely

over land. now before it is. you can see how hanselman well together it's that tend to be the tropical systems when they're over water. they're very stable. >> but when they go over land to become somewhat more unstable. so that means for all of this region of the country unstable severe weather is going to be what you can expect over the next 48 hours as this thing falls apart. now for now, of course, we're dealing with a cap for system. as you heard the eyewall still out to sea. a reporter was talking about a fairly dry. you can see kind of this line of relatively modest activity. there's a squall line venturing towards the north might make it up there within the next couple of hours while he still talking to us this morning. they're 2 hours ahead. so the next report will be coming out in about 2 hours. here's what we know now. max winds one 50's you talked about the pressure 9.30. that's pretty low that what you're going to get with the storm system like this. remember, it's not the pressure that makes it stronger. it is stronger there for its pressure is lower. typically cap for watching this go forward here dropping to a category one very

quickly. so okay. it's a modest hurricane at that point. but then you start dealing with severe weather all over the place. tore nato's bad weather extending, as you can see through central alabama up through mississippi and it's going to go right up the spine of the appalachians on the eastern side where most of the rough weather will be in. this is going all the way tuesday, fast mover. that's good. so won't be over. new orleans for a long period of time. however, you can see severe weather will follow it all through the southeast back on the home front. this is u c berkeley. i there's the shrubbery there. as you can see, the fog taking over a lot of geography for now. golden gate bridge still shrouded in some of that fog. so we're going in the right direction. getting this marine layer coming back ever so slightly. there's little bit of a breeze left over from last night's single digits. they were all calm yesterday morning. but single digits for this of this morning. now we'll see a little uptick this afternoon, but a stronger wind. we'll have to wait for by tomorrow. looks like a little bit. that will tell us that things are really starting to change in our favor, lower 60's cover a lot of the east bay 60 for oakland 59 hayward got 50's up

to the north bay. for now. oh, by the way, speaking of those winds is what happens this afternoon and kind of a modest event we get with that inland heating. it's still going to be plenty toasty happening in london. but by tomorrow a little bit better. wind event occurring as we get into the influence of the high is waning. temperatures will back off a little bit. we'll start to get more of that on shore flow. 72 for san francisco. that's a big improvement from yesterday open 79 at the ballpark. it's going to be much better tomorrow today than yesterday and 88 san jose still got those big hot numbers off to the east bay near 100 expected for a lot of the east been up to the north bay upper 80's to near about 90 or so. we're back in a bit with more kron 4.

>> kron 4 news is your local election headquarters. just a couple of weeks away from californians deciding whether or not governor gavin newsom will keep his job. democrats on the peninsula held a rally saturday encouraging people to vote no. in the recall race. kron four's. phillipe djegal reports from palo alto. >> ballots have been mailed out for weeks and election day is less than 3 weeks away with this. we call. >> passes. it's a disaster for this state. democratic state senator josh becker menlo park gathered. other elected leaders that don't park in

east palo alto saturday pushing the electorate to support governor gavin newsome by voting against him that we have elections for reasons even election next year. if you post him, you can out next year. >> but spent 250 million dollars and are we call a new election next year. >> it's crazy. local democrats say the republican candidates who appear to pose the biggest challenges to new. some are not fit for the job. namely conservative talk show host larry elder and businessman john. i believe, is that this vote is a distraction and a waste of these democrats are stressing the importance of every single vote. they believe the higher the turnout, the better it will work out for governor newsome. i am concerned that we can become complacent and not return about republicans have blasted newsome for his responses to the covid-19 pandemic. the growing homeless problem crime and wildfire protection. but democrats say some is addressing those

issues effectively is really the right that we need to keep in the governor's office. if we lets trump, republicans take control sacramento tracker state back to 2 years. election day is september 14 in east palo alto. police to call from >> meanwhile, the la district attorney has declined to prosecute larry elder, a leading candidate to unseat governor gavin newsome elders, former fiance accuses the talk show host of brandishing a 45 caliber revolver during an argument and domestic abuse from 6 years ago. since there is a one year statute of limitations on misdemeanor cases. prosecutors say they could not pursue accusations made by alexandra tig. elder is one of dozens of contenders hoping to replace newsom in the recall election set for september 14th. caitlyn jenner. meanwhile, one of elders rivals for the governor's seat held a town hall in southern california to

discuss the issues facing voters right now while polls show support for the recall effort is growing jenner has failed to gain traction with voters. larry elder has a 2 digit lead over his nearest competitors for governor. just 7% of voters say they'll cast their ballot for jenner during the town hall jenner attack to the governor for his leadership during the pandemic. gavin newsom. >> it wasn't for the people. he was out for himself. gavin newsome. wasn't for the workers. he was out for special interests. gavin newsome certainly was not for the kids. he was for the teachers unions and gavin newsome lived it up. while he shot us down. >> the latest polling shows 50.6% of voters support keeping governor newsome in office. 46.3% want him out. >> a reminder. tomorrow is your last day and last chance to register to vote by mail for the upcoming recall election registration forms.

right now. we just want to support them and just help them in whatever we can. >> our top story this half hour, a somber day in livermore after the superintendent of a high school announced 6 students were involved in a car accident friday night. one was killed. the other 5 still fighting for their lives. investigators say the teens were in a truck that plunged hundreds of feet off an embankment just hours later, hundreds in the community attended a vigil to pray for those victims. well, remembering the student who was killed kron four's amanda hari was there and reports on what we're learning about the victims. >> hundreds of people gathered together to support one another after an unthinkable tragedy region seeking mercy through all of this 6 livermore high schoolers were involved in a crash friday night. one was killed in the accident. superintendent kelly bowers sent out this message to the community no words can express our collective sadness

and grief at this tragic news. our hearts go out to this young man's loved ones and our entire school community. we are all understandably grieving this tragic loss of young life. these are photos from alameda county fire of the crash site of is a bit ponce spoke at the vigil. she says this is devastating for the community and she feels it personally know the family. >> my son is really good friends one of the boys and we know the family well. and we're just here to just offer prayer to anyone to who's in need. ponce tells me that some of the parents felt they needed to do some think. >> and a vigil seemed like the right way to help the community and the teens were here to offer just some love my hair to offer prayer. we're here to just offer them whatever they need right now. we just want to support them and just help them in whatever we can. parents coaches and community members spoke at the

vigil many more prayed ponce as it meant a lot to see the turnout and it's actually overwhelming it just shows how come you can come together when something tragic happens and how it can come from school officials say they will be crisis support for students and staff. >> that need it in livermore amanda hari kron 4 news. >> happening today. vta light rail service will resume in the south bay for the first time and 3 months. the service was halted after the deadly shooting back in may that killed 9 workers at the rail yard starting today, though, trains will operate on a limited schedule along the orange and green lines. trains will run every half hour from 08:00am until 07:00pm. in the meantime, evening tours at alcatraz island are set to resume next month. it's the first time in more than a year. the tours will be offered on thursdays through mondays starting september 9th

visitors can take the ferry leaving from san francisco's pier 33 at 06:00pm for now the tour will be limited to just a few 100 guests. fremont unified schools is reporting more than 3 dozen cases of covid-19 since the start of the new school year. a letter from the district superintendent says 37 cases were found among students and staff since august. 1st, officials say case total around 0.1 0%. the letter says in many of the early cases students contracted the virus outside of school officials say it's important for people to wear masks, practice. good hygiene and be mindful of physical distancing when possible. covid-19 cases are on the rise among unvaccinated children and teens. a school starts back up again. health leaders in los angeles county say unvaccinated young adults are 3 times as likely to get infected than those who are fully vaccinated. more than 3,000 cases have been reported

and schools in la county. many parents say their they are now nervous about sending their kids back to the classroom. >> but i did enjoy getting never. but as you know, because this is going to be like nervous every day. like what's going to happen and made me feel like very sad. i was very. >> very disappointing news. >> because of the surge. health officials have started to enforce stricter school quarantine rules. >> some good news, though, this morning as the cdc is marking a milestone in its vaccination efforts. at least half of all americans age 12 to 17 have had at least one dose of a covid vaccine. >> there are also new recommendations for schools as they reopen this fall encouraging vaccines and mask wearing. >> in our outbreak investigations large-scale quarantines are large number of cases are general occurring in schools because schools are

not falling about particularly our recommendations for teacher as well. students aged 12 and older to be vaccinated for everyone right now to the knots. >> last winter cases in were more than 3 times lower than in the general public. the doctor says that's mostly because of strict enforcement of protections like wearing a mask. now despite a surge in cases. more visitors are coming back to san francisco, but a full recovery could still be years away. according to san francisco's travel association. it says nearly 16 million tourists will visit the city this year, which is 5 million more than 2020. but still 39% below what we saw back in 2019 international tourism meanwhile, still down 76% compared to 2019 the travel association doesn't expect a full global recovery until the year 2025. coming up after the break. >> breaking down your sports

some friends who are veterans who say that their friends who served in afghanistan are really having a tough time figuring out what their purpose was over there. and that's hard to think that that yes, that's really difficult. there. the feeling very angry frustrated and like you said, feel kind of questioning their purpose. >> so morale is in it. it is isn't at all time low. and it's it's very troubling. the crisis line. the veterans crisis line compared to last year at this time. it's up 17% in the number of calls and just 12% increase in in one day, august 16th the day after kabul fell to the taliban. yes, yes. yeah. and there's also a nonprofit organization called stop soldier. suicide. and they said that in the last 2 weekends, their calls went up 90% and 60% respectively.

really really troubling so trying to reach out to our veterans. it's one of the best things that we can do. well, i think something that you also mentioned here isolation just because of covid-19 has acted as a significant issue as well. on top of all of us. >> right. i veterans are used to being in working with their brothers and sisters. >> and and when they come back, that's one of the things that they have difficulty with, you know, trying to assimilate again because that they're alone and then you put covid on top of that and they're really alone. a lot of my patients are alone and they don't have anybody else. so it's really difficult for them. and then you put this all on top of it. it's it. they're having a really difficult time. karen, i know as you mentioned, you do work with veterans. what can we say?

>> so it is ok to reach out and and. >> don't ask them, you know, what did you do in afghanistan be very general. like how how are you doing? you know, right now with everything going on. >> and they, you know, don't expect an answer. some. >> want to open up and that they see that as an opening to to talk. >> but there also those that are battle hardened. >> and they don't want to talk about it or they feel they don't need to talk about. it's a bit, but just don't press the issue but just open that door reach reach out to 2 year veteran and try not to let it get political that that's just leave that out of it and then one of the things you don't want to say is, oh, i can imagine how you must feel are really understand because where civilians we have no idea what they've gone through. so that's not real

bourbon street goes that way. we're right in the thick of it that you can see few people are out if any. some people are out driving trying to find where they're going to stay safe today. a lot of places are installing these makeshift flood barriers, especially businesses with glass doors trying to prevent water from coming in here, something interesting to note that we've been talking to folks who live and work here who say this is a tourist area. this is a place that is that the pride of new orleans and a lot of ways they feel confident that the city will do what they can. they say the flooding usually goes away pretty quickly here because city leaders like to keep it looking nice best. they can whether or not that's trut. we'll have to see that the city of new orleans has a pumping system to get water out 96 of 99 pumps are working fully functional. so that's giving great confidence to people who live here as you can see, those sandbags still as a precaution for many some out and about we've got people still walking the streets at this hour. even though the rain is coming in sheets and in waves really the wind is certainly picking up 2. we

those tours are happening thursdays through mondays starting on september 9th visitors can take the ferry leaving from san francisco's pier 33 at 06:00pm. for now, though, the tour is going to be limited to just a few 100 guests. fremont unified schools is reporting more than 3 dozen cases of covid-19 since the start of the new school year. a letter from the district superintendent says 37 cases were found among students and staff since august. first, officials say case total is around 0.1 0%. the letter says in many of the early cases students actually contracted the virus outside of school officials say it's important for folks to wear masks practice. good hygiene. and of course, be mindful of physical distancing when possible. this comes as covid-19 cases are on the rise among unvaccinated children and teens due to school starting back up again. health leaders in la county say unvaccinated young adults are 3 times as likely to get

with some ways to reach out to our veterans in a loving and supportive way can i'm really looking forward to chatting with you about this because i've even spoken with some friends who are veterans who say that their friends, who served in afghanistan are really having a tough time figuring out what their purpose was over there. and that's hard to think that that yes, that's really difficult. there. the feeling very angry frustrated and like you said, feel kind of questioning their purpose. >> so morale is in it. it is isn't at all time low. and it's it's very troubling. the crisis line of the veterans crisis line compared to last year at this time. it's up 17% in the number of calls and just 12% increase in in one day, august 16th the day after kabul fell to the taliban. yes, yes. yeah. and there's

also a nonprofit organization called stop soldier. suicide. and they said that in the last 2 weekends, their calls went up 90% and 60% respectively. really to really troubling so trying to reach out to our veterans. it's one of the best things that we can do. well, i think something that you also mentioned here isolation just because of covid-19 has acted as a significant issue as well. on top of all of us. >> right. i veterans are used to being in working with their brothers and sisters. >> and and when they come back, that's one of the things that they have difficulty with, you know, trying to assimilate again because that they're alone and then you put covid on top of that and they're really alone. a lot of my patients are alone and they don't have anybody else. so it's really difficult for them. and then you put this

all on top of it. it's it. they're having a really difficult time. karen, i know as you mentioned, you do work with veterans. what can we say? >> so it is ok to reach out and and. don't ask them, you know, what did you do in afghanistan be very general. like how how are you doing? you know, right now with everything going on and they, you know, don't expect an answer. some. >> want to open up and that they see that as an opening to to talk. >> but there also those that are battle hardened. >> and they don't want to talk about it or they feel they don't need to talk about. it's a bit, but just don't press the issue but just open that door reach reach out to 2 year veteran and try not to let it get political that that's just believe that added bit and then one of the things you

don't want to say is, oh, i can imagine how you must feel are really understand because where civilians we have no idea what they've gone through. so that's not real comforting. but just be a really good listener. i think that's great. and all of, you know, reminding them again that their service was meaningful. >> yes, their service and their sacrifice in what i see. they really sacrificed their health to be, you know, to give us our freedom. you know, freedom is not free and they are because of them. they sacrificed and they made it all possible for what we have here. >> if you come across a veteran who is considering hurting themself. how do you approach that situation. >> so it's and it's okay to ask them, you know, have you had thoughts of hurting yourself. it's not going to plant the seed. you know, it's okay to say that and asked that because then you're opening up a very honest open

conversation and then refer them to the veterans crisis line. they started this crisis line in 2000, 7 >> for 14 responders and 4 lines. now they have 500 responders and 3 call centers all across the nation that the need for our veterans to talk and be heard. is really has really increased exponentially want to keep these up on the screen for just a bit of people at home want to write down these numbers. >> that the tax number or or that website i do want to ask you if you have a veteran in your life. what signs should we be looking for when it comes to identifying whether or not they're in a crisis. >> so look for changes in mood in sleep patterns also at that height, the might also look >> if they're angry and they're they're harboring a

to fall in. the winds are picking up. look at these trees. whipping in the winds as hurricane ida inches closer. a lot of folks. as you can see, you're-still walking around trying to ride the storm out. some say they have a reason to stay. others say they just want to get out of town as leaders war. now it's too late. they want everybody to have a preparedness plan. activated right now in new orleans as i approach is on jack earlier. >> you can see that wind really whipping in his live shot there of we've got meteorologist dave spahr has been tracking the eye of the storm. it's getting dangerously close there to landfall. it is one of the eye wall of the eye wall of the north is just about to make the beaches. as you can see here towards the south. the latest numbers have come out. by the way, they haven't changed from the earlier stuff. we've been talking about where reporter is a juicy squall line just about to enter the area. and as you can see, the weather going in this direction. it's going to be a lousy late morning and afternoon for those folks there as conditions continue to deteriorate as the system is still over the water. it's

a stable system. you know, it's all organized going. it's thing. it's when it goes over land, it becomes almost in some ways little bit more unpredictable becomes a different type of system. you hear about sharing all the time. vertical shear and so forth. >> that's the kind of stuff that produces a different type of weather tornadoes and so forth, which there's a watch for to the eastern side of all of this extends all the way to the panhandle of florida. now to category 4. still max winds at one 50 and fairly low pressure. good thing about this it's fast-moving. that's number one. number 2, it really loses its punch. real quickly by monday morning at 07:00am you see it's a tropical storm at that point. but all this tropical moisture has to be absorbed by the atmosphere. it's coming from the tropics. this is a mid latitudes. so there's a contrast that will continue to drive severe weather which will remain on the eastern quadrant. very typical. but as you can see by midweek. it's already moving off towards the east coast to the quick pace back on the home front. we're dealing with fog at the golden gate. as you can see, covering up the towers temperature check. 70's inland meanwhile,
