>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thanks for joining us here on the kron 4 morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is saturday, september 4th labor day weekend and things are going to look pretty warm out there. dave sphar standing by with a little check of your weather forecast this morning. hey, dave, welcome morning. welcome morning, everybody. a little bit of laster, i guess for summer before the unofficial end comes on monday as temperatures plowed to the 90's yet again. >> for a lot of those inland valleys, although we're starting things off bit of a cooler note this morning. we did see from yesterday. a quick check of what it looks

like right now. still some fog even in town, as you can see, the shot from san francisco again looking like some ground fog just starting to lift. same thing happening at the golden gate bridge again. fog reading us. and so that fog mixing out well before noon, it looks like at all locations, even clearing along the coast to temperature checker in the 50's over most the real estate. in fact, 60's. the only spot at half moon, bay elsewhere lower to even upper 50's to be found. that's a little bit cooler than we were by couple degrees. this time from yesterday. to your saturday 75 by 11. we're talking 89 at 2 o'clock revisiting some of those 90's inland both today, tomorrow and even into sunday, a closer look at that labor day weekend forecast coming up in just a bit. well. >> thanks, dave. happening today the air could be a little tougher to breathe across the bay area, air quality management district has extended its air quality advisory through this holiday weekend. kron four's camila barco is in contra costa county with the details this morning. >> well, the sun is coming out here in walnut creek. but you

can already noticed some hazy skies. if you look in the far and you can barely make out the hills air quality experts say the fires feeling north of us is causing smoke to linger in the bay area. the area's air quality is deemed as moderate for the holiday weekend. and that means it's mostly risky for people who are sensitive to air pollution. experts say smoke could potentially mix with the surface. it can irritate your eyes and airways. so if you smell smoke, you're encouraged to stay inside with your windows and doors closed. you should also have your car vent systems recirculate to avoid outside air from coming inside but air quality experts say the smoke should not pose any health risks. now, if you're curious about the air quality in your area. you can always check on your phone. currently the air quality index here in walnut creek is at 74. so it's moderate, but it's nothing compared to what people in the lake tahoe area arsene and want to create camila barco

kron 4 news. >> of course, the air quality advisory is because of the wildfires burning near lake tahoe calmer winds, though, in the region has helped firefighters divert the caldor fire from the city of south lake tahoe. several evacuation orders in eldorado county were actually downgraded over the last several days. leaving fire managers, cautiously optimistic dry conditions and warmer temperatures, though, do threaten to fuel the flames, pushing them to the northeast, potentially 10's of thousands of homes are still at risk in the south lake tahoe area and the thi 3 weeks since it's been burning. the fire has destroyed more than 800, 86 structures at last check it's 32% contained and has burned more than 213,000 acres. as fire raged. it forced thousands out of their homes and into evacuation centers, hotels and in some cases people were sleeping in their cars. now with the fire showing some signs of slowing down. many are wondering when

they might be able to return home. kron four's, terisa sauce. you talk with the mayor of south lake tahoe to get some answers for those anxiously waiting for word on what's next. we are. >> the luckiest community in the world. south lake tahoe mayor tamra wallace reflecting on the week and on this, the caldor fire still burning yet. there is some optimism at the end of the week. a far cry from what happened monday. >> when mass evacuation orders rang out. >> i i want to temper myself because i know that so many people lost their homes on echo summit and through the strawberry area and the town of flats. my heart just breaks for them. but you know, on the other hand, to my my heart. just a soaring for the people as myers in christmas valley and and south lake because it could have been so bad. the

mayor says that she sympathizes with those now wanting the next step to return home. >> she has moved twice with your family. and just today forced to pack up and her special needs son faced a crisis of he had incident where we had the entire trekkie fire departments and ambulance company. they're at the skateboard park there because some medical so it it has been an incredible. stressful day for my family. i can even imagine what other families are going through the bottom line. she says although she wants to go home. she says it's just not safe yet. we do still have active fire in the base and so far so good. i know that the air quality has improved greatly today. but who yesterday it was in the 700 status, just not healthy.

she says she's in constant contact with cal fire who will make the ultimate call for everyone to return adding eldorado county code red system, which is our reverse 911, system. better subscribe to that. we'll get updates and we'll get notified the minute they're allowed back in their homes. terry says stasio kron 4 news. historically dry grass does continue to fuel the spread of the dixie fire. meanwhile, burning in 5 northern california counties. >> take a look at this video taken by a rancher in plumas county who says they lost their fences and the grass which would have 6 served as feed for their cattle. the dixie fire so far has burned more than 881,000 acres. it is now 55% contained more than 2100 structures were destroyed by this fire. in response to the state's current fire

there's new restrictions popping up across the country for travelers. brian entin has more. the rush is on at airports around the countryl travelers eager for a last blowout summer weekend. some worried but not deterred by the recent covid search. >> any covid concerns. definitely a little bit with this many people being around here in close proximity. doubled up on masks whenever and the plane. you know, back say to feel a little scary out there. some time to get a risk it for the good for the business right. >> masks are still required inside all airports and trains. according to trip advisor the top 5 labor day travel destinations or ocean city, maryland orlando las vegas, myrtle beach and new york city. the travel site says most searches are for outdoor destinations like beaches and national parks. even vaccinated. these friends are taking no chances with on a covid going around right

>> just have to be a little careful. doesn't look too crowded today. so. >> no mask today. the great outdoors still safer than being in close quarters with others indoors. but if you haven't got the shot, the cdc warns just stay home if you are we recommend not travel. and that, of course, includes all children under 12. not yet eligible for the vaccine in chicago. the school district catching some parents off guard with this letter saying if kids travel out of state anywhere. but vermont. they need to get covid tests and quarantine for 7 to 10 days before coming back to school. i wasn't planning on going anywhere anyway because, you know, covid, we can still go to illinois, which doesn't really make sense because were no better we actually were already going to be in town. so not an issue for us, but i could see where that will roll out a french isn't some plans for parents. >> that was brian entin reporting for us this morning. aaa says it expects about

42 million people to head out on the road this holiday weekend. if you're planning to fill up your tank today. here's a look at the average gas prices in the bay area and oakland you can expect to pay around 4.46, san francisco sitting at 4.56 san jose. the average is 4 45. and in the north bay in sandra fell. you're going to be shelling out $4 and $0.50 for for gallons of gas. there. dave spahr says that it's going to get quite warm for this last weekend of the summer yeah, we're getting little flavor of summer. it wants to kind of get in right on to the wire there as we push those temperatures into the 90's. you're going to feel the bump. however. >> probably by sunday and a little bit into monday to end just as the holiday and temperatures will start to fall a little bit too little more of a pleasant zone. it looks like still to being treated to some of this fog to get things started in what we have for both today and tomorrow. really cutting off the surface winds as high pressure will show you that just a bit. but again, this morning, fog should mix out by the noon hour. temperature check. we have the lower 50's up here. the north bay. across

the east bay shoreline mid-fifties also looking at 61 for any off. if the 7 san jose and 60. meanwhile, 4 half moon bay now of advanced this all the way till sunday here. this will be just towards the end of all of the holiday weekend. start monday to go through. but overnight it look something interesting here. some scattered clouds to make not rain producers. but some scattered clouds overnight to take us into monday morning that should again clear out for essential. a sunny monday into the day. but with this high pressure that's in place. we don't get a lot of this horizontal motion of the winds and also interferes vertically as well, too. so it's hard for that air to mix one of the reasons why we have this moderate air quality. it's not cleaning up because we don't have a nice, good clean on shore, wind and mixing the law. so everybody's pretty much stuck with the air mass we've had before upstream. there's some weather pattern to start to change a little bit worth noting towards the end of the week as well. there's a cell phone. the background there. some early fog mild start and it looks like warm temperatures. well inland but a temperature bump is expected on sunday and that

will take us into labor day itself hot and sunny early in the week near 100 going on sunday into monday. then late in the week. we've got some scattered clouds. this looks interesting because the models both agree. but they disagree on details on all this. but the time to look for is anywhere from early on friday until late on saturday of the week coming up here and it won't be as hot either with the upper 80's returning partially because the reason of the little change in weather patterns. okay. 70 going on for a high today for san francisco scattered clouds mild. we've 75 going on for oakland, 83 for san jose sunny and mild across the wider bejo are still popping some lower 90's off to the far east bay here. but they'll be contained not real close to 100 for today. that happens tomorrow and into your monday we're going to check into that. your 4 zone forecast and also look at the extended to noel. thanks, dave. >> covid-19. continues to affect students throughout the bay area on the peninsula. the san mateo half moon bay

varsity football game scheduled for last night had to be canceled after san mateo union high school leaders confirm someone involved with the team tested positive for coronavirus kron four's. amanda hari has more from the principal. >> well tells me they just found out the varsity football game would have to be canceled on wednesday. and he says it was the team. >> it's a letdown. it's disappointing. however, i think we all understand the number one thing right now is the safety and well-being of our students and our communities. football fans are going to have to wait another week to see the half moon bay varsity football team. >> take this field to get team was healthy. san mateo was forced to cancel because of covid-19 the school district's communication manager says we can confirm there was a positive case involving a member of our varsity football community at san mateo high school safety is our highest

priority for students athletes and opponents. the jv team did play half moon bay high school principal john nays are says it's unfortunate to see covid still impacting the kids stall, the pandemic >> had 6 games last year. our team is really excited to get out there and play. we've got so many great kids that just want to be part of a community. he says they're athletic director did try to schedule another game. >> contacting schools that weren't playing this weekend, but they couldn't make it work. logistically were planted in the whole game. that means have to get buses and all those other pieces referees. everything else. >> and we just weren't able to to to pull it off. azar says despite this cancellation. he does think things are looking up. >> i could feel the spirit around the campus kids are, you know, really excited to be back in school and learning with their teachers. but additionally, that extra piece

>> now to some bay area ports, the san francisco giants pulled off an extra inning victory last night against the los angeles dodgers with this when the giants are now a game up on the dodgers in the national league west the to taint teams play again tonight. sure to be another exciting game. first pitch is at 6. '05, so good luck to the giants. meanwhile, the a's in action in toronto. it was a 2, 2, a's in the bottom of the 8th inning before this game took a wild turn. the blue jays would mount a huge comeback on the a's. they'd score 6 runs to tie the game and then they go on to win by a final of 11 to 10. >> on to college football. now stanford kicks off the season today down in texas. they're looking to build off of a promising 2020 season kylen

hour winds. so it's a change of climate are coming in from the east bay little bit. 75 at 11 o'clock by 2 word 89. coming up, we'll take a look at that long range forecast, which looks interesting come the end of the week. noel. >> thanks, dave. police in oakland are asking for your help this morning in finding this 18 year-old girl. a key ship hits. she was last seen yesterday morning around 11:00am in the 9500 block of plymouth street. she's about 5 foot 6, 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. she was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and leggings. anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact oakland pd. a family in oakland, meanwhile, is remembering a 23 year-old man who was shot and killed at a barbershop. police are looking for suspects in connection with the killing happened last weekend. kron four's dan thorn talked with the victim's sister who says it's been a painful loss. >> 23 sunny bell had plans to make a difference in his community but his future and his dreams were tragically cut

short when he was shot and killed here last saturday. but his sunny sister says his memory will live on. >> and she's working to make sure. >> flowers have been placed outside of a rockbridge barbershop where 2 unknown gunman shot and killed 23 sonny bill and critically wounded another bell and oakland native is remembered by family as someone with an infectious smile, a passion for social justice and a drive to help others this happens too too many times when. >> we lose so many people gun violence. >> tory bell is his sonny's older sister. she's been heartbroken by the loss and does not sunny to become another gun violence statistic. she says he had dreams of molding young minds through activism and teaching my brother. >> spoke about his he protests in about you marched against he wanted to devote his

>> chp is asking for anyone with information about the shooting to get them a call. in san francisco. 911, dispatchers, one into manual mode for about 2 hours friday morning after a power outage interrupted the emergency management system. officials say they don't know what exactly caused the outage, but it reportedly affected both primary and backup networks which lead to the emergency data system. the executive director of the department says this is a scenario they actually train for. >> we were down for about 2 hours we were able to afford calls to other mobile devices and so and then for calls that were not picked up immediately or got a busy system. we have a system. that captures those numbers. and so we were able to call those. those not callers back if we did not answer. >> the head of the department of emergency management says they're investigating what happened, but it does not appear to be a manmade

>> in national news this morning, president biden got a firsthand look at the destruction of hurricane ida his visit to louisiana came as the death toll rises up and down the coast due to the storm our washington correspondent jessi turnure has more on the federal response. >> president biden and governor john bel edwards stressed federal investments in the state's levee system help make sure the damage wasn't as bad as it could have been, but they and other state local officials on the ground there say more money needs to flow from washington for future storms. >> i know you're hurting. >> president biden visited the epicenter of hurricane ida's destruction where he heard from louisiana state and local

overhead. basically you don't get the mixing process going on, sir. but he's left with the air mass that they've got as we head down across central valley improves to moderate right here around the bay area. but we don't get that good strong onshore flow even into the afternoon as we typically get again with that high here. so that's going to be kind of the story for the next 3 days until that high weakens, we get into about tuesday or so. now the end the week starts to get interesting here as it will elsewhere want to point something out in just a minute. current checking the winds still a bit of a drift will get an onshore wind a bit in the afternoon, but it's just because the daytime heating and again, the high really cuts that down. we're way down here in the gulf of mexico. the gulf of mexico's up here yucatan peninsula. we got a collection of some thunder showers. so what? well, the weather service national hurricane center also is looking at this to see if this might become something. tropical one of the forecast models really paints an interesting story sending this as what appears to be a tropical like system near the gulf of gulf of mexico coast

yet again by the end of the week. so something that bears watching back on the home front as we get to the end of sunday and into monday overnight, it looks like we'll get some collection of clouds starting to develop late on sunday bubbling up from the south passing over should be without incident. we don't see any rain or thunder shower activity happening with this just yet. but we do see this little swath of some cloud cover. but later upstream, something does develop. all right. so we get some cooling happening with all of that going forward into the weeks. we'll get some temperatures backing off a little bit. it's quite busy. doesn't here by the end of the week. on friday and into saturday. moisture bubbling up again from the south. this coverage area models agree. we said see some thunder showers develop in the mountains yet again. that's bad news because they can come with dry lightning. although the rain is certainly welcomed here you have it again. happening friday morning. the timing appears to be and then clearing out for the weekend. but both models agree on this coming together in some kind of fashion for today. high temperatures upper 90's in the

extended its air quality advisory through this holiday weekend. kron four's camila barco joins us from contra, costa county with details this morning. >> well, the sun is coming out here in walnut creek. but you can already noticed some hazy skies. if you look in the far end, you can barely make out the hills air quality experts say the fires feeling north of us is causing smoke to linger in the bay area. the area's air quality is deemed as moderate for the holiday weekend. and that means it's mostly risky for people who sensitive to air pollution. experts say smoke could potentially mix with the surface. it can irritate your eyes and airways. so if you smell smoke you're encouraged to stay inside with your windows and doors closed. you should also have your car vent systems recirculate to avoid outside air from coming inside but air quality experts say the smoke should not pose any health risks. now, if you're curious about the air quality in your area. you can always check on your phone. currently the air quality index here in

walnut. creek is that 74? so it's moderate, but it's nothing compared 2 people in the lake area arsene and want to create camila barco kron 4 news. >> of course, the air quality advisory is due to the wildfires burning near lake tahoe calmer winds in the region helped firefighters divert the caldor fire from the city of south lake tahoe. so that's some good news. several evacuation orders in eldorado county have been down graded over the last several days and that leaves fire managers cautiously optimistic dry conditions and warmer temperatures are threatening to fuel the flames pushing them to the northeast. 10's of thousands of homes are still at risk though. and the south lake tahoe area over the last 3 weeks since it's been burning. the fire has destroyed. has destroyed about 892 structures. containment has grown to 37%, though, and the fire has burned more than 214,000 acres in total. as the caldor fire raged and of

your 100 tomorrow. and a look at that longer range forecast for you coming up in a bit. well, yeah, let's talk a little bit more about that air quality. the air quality management district has extended its air quality advisory through. >> the holiday weekend. to kron four's. camila barco is in contra, costa county. she's got more details for us this morning. >> well, there's some hazy skies here in walnut creek. you can barely make out the hills in the far end. smoke is lingering through the bay area skies this weekend from the wildfires raging north of us people in the lake tahoe area are experiencing hazardous air quality. the index over there is as high as 434 the current air conditions are so polluted hazy skies can be seen over the hills in walnut creek. that's where the air quality is in the moderate range. it's mostly risky for people who are sensitive to air pollution. experts say smoke could potentially mix with the surface. it can irritate your eyes and airways. so if you

smell smoke, you're encouraged to stay inside with your windows and doors closed. you should also have your car vent systems. recirculate to avoid outside air from coming inside but air quality experts say the smoke should not pose any health risks. district is extending this advisory through monday and wannacry camila barco kron 4 news. >> now, of course, the air quality advisory is due to those wildfires burning near lake tahoe as camila mentioned, calmer winds up in that region, though, did help firefighters divert the caldor fire from the city of south lake tahoe. some great news there. several evacuation orders in eldorado county have been ground down graded over the last several days, which is leaving fire managers cautiously optimistic. dry conditions and warmer temperatures. do threaten to fuel the flames. still, though, that will push them to the northeast. 10's of thousands of homes are still at risk in the south lake tahoe area. in the 3 weeks since it started burning. the

dances all the way till sunday afternoon because an interesting thing happens here even though we're talking about the heat spike again on monday. get some moisture coming in from the southwest are a little bit. so it has some somewhat tropical origins here. we always get a little concerned about that this time of year because you have instability aloft which means that's dry lightning. so something to look out for. although the official forecast doesn't have any mention of that. the map is pretty simple. we have the high pressure that's pretty much in place for this weekend's. we're not getting a lot of circulation east and west. we're not getting much vertical mixing so the smoke pretty much stays where it is, although it does keep that low surface winds and that's a good thing for firefighting efforts but don't get as much of that on shore flow effort. just a brief one with the daytime heating in the east bay. so breaking things down for this weekend. it's early fog which gives way to a mild start warm inland temperatures bump up. the one sunday in you'll feel that monday, too hot and sunny, early on with near 100 for tomorrow and monday. then later in the temperatures. back off a

success due to some poor lighting in the photos. they receive those results are expected to come sometime this weekend. nasa's first effort to collect a sample of iraq failed when that rock crumbled from the drill. this one looks like it's a little bit more in tax. i guess we'll see what they found. meanwhile, this is one time you can't help but stare at the sun. take a look at these mesmerizing high precision images of the sun taken last month by a new chinese satellite. the country's meteorological administration says the extreme ultraviolet animation captures the fiery activity on the surface of the sun satellite was launched back in july to help try and make space weather forecasting a little bit more accurate. dave, i know it's going to be hot this weekend, but hot, hot like that on the surface of the sun what we want to watch those emp attack. so coming from the sun, though, got a boy that that could be problematic issue. >> we have fog hanging around in terms of overcast skies at half moon bay. this should

comes develops with that. we get later runs back in the home front sunday night into we see a collection of some g. cloud cover bubbling up from the south. now, the official forecast doesn't have any problems with this. but this instability can sometimes spark off some dry lightning. so that's what the concern is there later into the week. however, and the longer range forecast models we cool off a little bit during the week shore. but looking to our southeast. we see the bubbling up with some of the monsoon here and that potentially by the models accounts will see some thunder showers going on up in the mountains friday and into next weekend. the rain part. that's great. the lightning part. not so great. so hopefully we'll get some rain out of that. that does come to some capacity at least up in the mountains. maybe central valley. but part of that may impact that they too. so it bears watching for our front as well. upper 90's for highs today in the central valley. 70 san francisco 87 down to san diego 76 for la x back to your 4 zone forecast for the saturday. 70 san francisco. we'll keep it in

saturday morning. and here's some interesting news. the pandemic is taking a toll on monkeys in indonesia in bali, monkeys that normally. >> get bananas and peanuts from tourists are actually at a loss right now because of coronavirus travel restrictions, visitors no longer around to feed them or play with them. so the monkeys have started raiding villages in search of something to eat worried. this could escalate villagers have now started to leave fruit, peanuts and other food out in the forest to kind of try and placate these primates. but they are apparently rican some havoc on these villages. unfortunately.
