washington. dc new york pennsylvania, washington state, texas but not in california but there are ways to participate even though you're not live in and a state that part that has a life of that. i know that yesterday here in san francisco, there was a stair that several people participated. and like you said, though, you don't necessarily have to be a part of a huge group to do what you can do it on your own. talk to me about. >> how to get involved. >> so you can actually participate virtually so you go you can go the stair climb, dot org and actually signed up with the group sent up individually signed up with the team stair master, which is the icon of a stair stair climbing equipment. they actually have a team. you can join a team or you could if you can't physically climb stairs, you could be a supporter and support somebody
7:50 am
else that's climbing. do you suggest adding a little bit of weight like hand weights or ankle to kind of symbolize the amount of gear that our firefighters were. >> carrying on 9.11. well, what they the i know the firefighters. they are wearing full gear. but what the firefighters that went up and the trade center. they were wearing about a 100 pounds of gear. >> because they were not only were they wearing their outfits, but they're carrying extra air packs their acts, you know, extra flashlight. so just imagine carrying a hunt that extra pounds up 110 flights of stairs. well, and i mean, stair climbing is is not necessarily the easiest of the workouts that you can do. but it is really good for your health to talk to us a little bit about those benefits. >> yes. so it is excellent source of training. now, what
7:51 am
i often hear is high. can walk on my treadmill for half an hour. no problem. they put me on the stair master, try to climb stairs in. i'm having a very difficult time and that's because stair climbing is a very vigorous activity it's a powerful form of walking because think about it. you are actually taking a step and having to hoist all your weight on one foot and then and then carried the next that oversee you're not only are you balancing, but then you're also having to work up against gravity. so and you are using 2 to 3 times more energy just to walk upstairs compared to walking on on a flat surface. and this really does help against middle age weight gain talking what men who climb 8 more flights today. how how do they benefit here. >> yes, so first of all, they found that if you climb 8 or more flights of stairs a day.
7:52 am
you reduce your mortality rate by 33%. so compare that to walkers. they found that walker's to people that walk 1.3 miles a day. they reduced mortality risk by 22%. so considerably more when you climb stairs and then they also fan. if you walk 2 minutes extra a day that you reduce that out offset that middle age weight gain. >> i feel like every time someone asks for, you know, just easy ways to get started on a on a weight loss think that it's always take the stairs when you can. and this is one of those examples. but like you said, some people don't necessarily have a little bit of a more difficult time. give us some tips on if you're just starting to try and do the stairs. what can due to make a little easier for you. >> well, first of all, if you do have a lot of weight that you're carrying that not start
7:53 am
the stairs yet because for every pound weight you carry. that's 4 pounds of weight on your needs and it even more when you're climbing the stairs. but when you start out just klein like one flight of stairs 2 flights of stairs and always make sure you're wearing good shoes. you know, if you're at work and wearing heels definitely change issues when you're walking up the stairs because you don't want to get injured. you know, doing the this activity. also try if you if you have a lot of stairs to climb. i would say just do one or 2, then get off and then take the elevator up. and and then what try not to grab the the handlebars and pull yourself up because it that's kind of cheating. yeah. so you want to make sure that you are, you know, keeping good excuse me. good posture and walking straight up and and not leaning forward. so. make sure you not trying to attack the stairs right after
7:54 am
lunch either. so hahaha give yourself a little bit of time to digest. yeah. again, if you want to go ahead and be a part of the national stair climb go to national stair climb dot org. it is going on now. >> they're raising funds for fallen firefighter karen, thank you so much for joining us and giving us a little bit of tips on how we can get ourselves started on the stairs. i think it's always a good thing. raitt you and you have until october 31st to get in. all your steps are here. >> you're walking. are you're running your biking. all those to all those things combined. you don't have to just climb the stairs to now. karen, thanks so much.

9:47 am
never forget our fallen firefighters and a way to benefit our own health as well. karen, good morning to you. good morning. talk to me about the stair climb. i saw several friends at home doing stair climbs yesterday. there is a national stair climb, though, next month. right. well, it's actually going on now across the country. so it is the the 9.11 memorial stair climb and it is a way to honor the the firefighters that lost their lives. >> so what it involves is climbing 110 flights of stairs to symbolize the 110 flights stairs that are in the world trade center. so it's quite an and it's happening live in washington. dc new york pennsylvania, washington state, texas but not in california but there are ways
9:48 am
to participate even though you're not live in and a state that part that has a life of that. i know that yesterday here in san francisco, there was a stair that several people participated. and like you said, though, you don't necessarily have to be a part of a huge group to do what you can do it on your own. talk to me about. >> how to get involved. >> so you can actually participate virtually so you go you can go the stair climb, dot org and actually signed up with the group sent up individually signed up with the team stair master, which is the icon of a stair stair climbing equipment. they actually have a team. you can join a team or you could if you can't physically climb stairs, you could be a supporter and support somebody else that's climbing. do you suggest adding a little bit of weight like hand weights or ankle to kind of symbolize the
9:49 am
amount of gear that our firefighters were. >> carrying on 9.11. well, what they the i know the firefighters. they are wearing full gear. but what the firefighters that went up and the trade center. they were wearing about a 100 pounds of gear. >> because they were not only were they wearing their outfits, but they're carrying extra air packs their acts, you know, extra flashlight. so just imagine carrying a hunt that extra pounds up 110 flights of stairs. well, and i mean, stair climbing is is not necessarily the easiest of the workouts that you can do. but it is really good for your health to talk to us a little bit about those benefits. >> yes. so it is excellent source of training. now, what i often hear is is can walk on my treadmill for half an hour. no problem that put me on the stair master, try to climb stairs in. i'm having a very
9:50 am
difficult time and that's because stair climbing is a very vigorous activity it's a powerful form of walking because think about it. you are actually taking a step and having to hoist all your weight on one foot and then and then carried the next that oversee you're not only are you balancing, but then you're also having to work up against gravity. so and you are using 2 to 3 times more energy just to walk upstairs compared to walking on on a flat surface. and this really does help against middle age weight gain talking what men who climb 8 more flights today. how how do they benefit here. >> yes, so first of all, they found that if you climb 8 or more flights of stairs a day. you reduce your mortality rate by 33%. so compare that to walkers. they found that walker's to people that walk one 0.3 miles a day. they
9:51 am
reduced mortality risk by 22%. so considerably more when you climb stairs and then they also fan. if you walk 2 minutes extra a day that you reduce that out offset that middle age weight game. >> i feel like every time someone asks for, you know, just easy ways to get started on a on a weight loss think that it's always take the stairs when you can. and this is one of those examples. but like you said, some people don't necessarily are have a little bit of a more difficult time. give us some tips on if you're just starting to try and do the stairs. what can due to make a little easier for you. >> well, first of all, if you do have a lot of weight that you're carrying that not start the stairs yet because for every pound weight you carry. that's 4 pounds of weight on your needs and it even more when you're climbing the stairs. but when you start out
9:52 am
just klein like one flight of stairs, 2 flights of stairs and always make sure you're wearing good shoes. you know, if you're at work and wearing heels definitely change issues when you're walking up the stairs because you don't want to get injured. you know, doing the this activity. also try if you if you have a lot of stairs to climb. i would say just do one or 2, then get off and then take the elevator up. and and then what try not to grab the the handlebars and pull yourself up because it that's kind of cheating. yeah. so you want to make sure that you are, you know, keeping good excuse me. good posture and walking straight up and and not leaning forward. so. make sure you're not trying to attack the stairs right after lunch either. so hahaha yourself a little bit of time to digest. yeah. again, if you want to go ahead and be a part of the national stair climb go
9:53 am
to national stair climb dot org. it is going on now. they're raising funds for fallen firefighter karen, thank you so much for joining us and giving us a little bit of. >> tips on how we can get ourselves started on the stairs. i think it's always a good thing. raitt you and you have until october 31st to get in. all your steps are here. >> you're walking. are you're running your biking. all those to all those things combined. you don't have to just climb the stairs to now. karen, thanks so much.
