forecast. we're going to call kind of rain to maybe scattered showers a mixture between the 2 of those right there. quick check radar. it's not really that active for right now. stormtracker 4 come taking a breather here. couple splotches appear around berlin gain. and as you can see around the golden gate as well. that may just be some false returns with all of that. the pattern is pretty much the same northwest scooting on in across the bay, as you will notice winds at this hour. not to be very active single digits. but i do want to mention that is a little bit of a player. this afternoon through into tomorrow. even those things will clear out tomorrow afternoon will be a bit of a chill going on even though the skies open up, which they're kind of doing right now. look at that. at half moon, bay. but even catch a couple rays of sun early on, although hardly beach weather going on. let's go and watch the fog here. not much happens till noon now. cain. sure. alright. then later on this afternoon. that kind of underscores the footprints of the redeveloping rain for this afternoon and into this evening tonight, temperature check for you. 30's up there in the north

of rain showers that have been coming into virtually since monday. and it's actually accumulating into a quiet little total of rainfall. well, it wasn't a white christmas it's certainly a soggy one. we've actually seen a heavier band of rain that came down and almost all the little bit over the san francisco bay area. and it's just slowly kind of made its way down towards the central coast. now this is citizen video taken in oakland. you can see flooding near foster avenue and bernhardt drive. >> meteorologists with the national weather service bay area david king says we're going to continue to see this type of weather. it's going to stay rainy essentially you know, the new year's holiday, he says for the bay area. the rain is a positive limiting fire danger. i know that we have occasionally in very limited cells. we weren't necessarily as concerned about potentially a fire starting. >> because of this accumulated rain over the course of this week has really benefited our sources. the national weather

service is keeping an eye on colder temperatures in the coming days. as of right now we're kind of just expecting more into those 30's getting closer to the freezing temperatures in terms of like a definitive. it's going to icy. >> not at this time. we are going to keep an eye. >> king tells me to make sure you're taking those colder temperatures. seriously bundle up wear layers. and if you do have to drive somewhere allow extra time because there may be traffic and the roads may be wet in san francisco. amanda hari kron 4 news. >> now in the east bay and open officer is on paid leave after an officer-involved shooting on friday. it happened on 98th avenue just before 04:30pm, in east oakland police say they were responding to a report of a man who flashed a gun at someone when they arrived, police say that man attacked an officer and flashed his gun at them during the incident. an officer shot at that man but did not hit him. no officers were hurt during this incident. but police arrested

that man and recovered a gun. so far the name of the arrest of the man arrested has not been released. oakland. police are also investigating a shooting on lakeshore avenue near lake merritt. police say they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. they say the man died some time later at a hospital. if you have any information about the shooting. you can call oakland police. the department says christmas eve was a violent day for the city decides this homicide. they say they were investigating multiple shootings armed robberies and armed carjackings. the police chief plans to give more details about these crimes in a press conference tomorrow. turning to our coronavirus coverage now, the biden administration plans to lift its travel ban on 8 south african countries last month. nearly all non us citizens from those countries were barred from entering the u.s. the decision comes after the omicron variant started

spreading. there. those restrictions will end next saturday. california health leaders say the omicron variant is now prevalent in 50 to 70% of new covid-19 cases. omicron is now the most dominant covid-19 variant in the u.s. it makes up nearly 75% of all new cases health experts detected the country's first omicron case here in san francisco. the cases involved a man the case involved a man who had traveled to south africa so far the golden state has reported almost 5 million confirmed cases and more than 75,000 deaths since the pandemic began. >> public health experts are urging people to upgrade their cloth face mask. >> doctors at george washington university say cloth mask are nothing more than facial decorations. they recommend wearing at least a three-ply surgical mask or an n 95 mask. if you're in a

celebrating christmas. but health experts warn of the dangers of leaving food out for too long or storing it the wrong way. i don't tells us how to stay safe while eating leftovers. you've got to understand that this are products of. >> meat products or plant products. that's to control organisms and them health department director josh vanmeter says organisms can already be found in products before cooking them. and that's why preparing handling and storing food properly is key to avoid getting sick e-coli, which is the most common one that people tend to forget. >> which is something that comes to the meat products. of course, and it goes pretty fast under the right conditions. he says one of the conditions for organisms such as e-coli to grow is food temperature. it is when it becomes dangerously high in numbers. >> when it reaches the room temperature over 3 hours. ben starts growing and reproducing that the body cannot handle and process that that's when

>> welcome back. time for another check of the weather with meteorologist dave spahr. now. dave, i don't walk out with rain boots today. but i definitely had a coat on because some will hold its going. is it going to say like that. it's quite a fright from a miami saying yeah, we have moisture, but it's a little bit colder. you keep all that rain gear with you there. you're going to need it in this forecast going forward. storm tracker 4 is somewhat quiet for right now a couple splotches here, but a lot of maybe false returns that we have going on. we might see as whisks in the skies open up just a little bit for a few hours this morning. but all the elements are kind of in place not to give us too much help today. you klow, we have colder air aloft. you know, and because of all this moisture to the ground here. the sun comes out and we're at the lowest the sun has the lowest arc that it's giving us. so we're not getting a lot of help from the sun warming us up. so all the elements are against us with the moisture. the ground of operation temperatures are going to move much today. so everything is against us for that. here's a live shot going on half moon, bay. you can see goal opening up of the skies just a touch.

look for monday afternoon for a little bit better. clearing going on in the afternoon hours particular here's the golden gate bridge the traffic. look at that just a couple of cars coming and going a bit. here's what a storm tracker 4 in the motion. you can see all the rain is broken up. doesn't look to be too much upstream, but it's going to become more pronounced by this afternoon and into the evening hours, particularly having said that, we've had with the rain kind of shut off a little bit in the skies. open up a touch allowed some of that radiational cooling going on with evaporation really absorb a lot of heat who with us. so we got a lot of 30's on the board with wet roads and so forth. so a little bit of caution here with that not out of the question in some bally's to get some black ice here and there a little lower 40's along the east bay shoreline. remember there being protected by the water and the marine layer a little bit. san francisco at 4648 for half moon bay. so it really shows you how cold this air mass is that even colder than the water. so going forward on futurecast for again, we have a quick opening up of the

skies before too long. the stills up with another punch of rain. this is taking us into the evening hours. then another little break and then a more earnest batch of rain. you can see pre-dawn. so in the early morning commute will be probably dealing with kind of some sloppy weather. again, that will be coupled with winds which someone to get to a bit monday afternoon. we open up the skies but don't expect the temperatures to do much of anything. so carmella they should keep the coat handy because you'll need it be chilly with the breeze added to that's because those winds today we got the clouds redeveloping by the afternoon air is going start to shift here on shore. here comes our next batch of rain on top of all of this overnight. and then tomorrow afternoon with the skies opening up. we still have good solid winds coming in from the coast in the teens to lower 20. so it's going to have a chill even though we'll have the sun on your shoulder, a touch there. the winds really don't are subsiding until we get to around tuesday here. so here's the breakdown here early sun today, cool and breezy on balance showers redevelop by noon. it's gonna start up in the north bay early in the week. sun

returns. little bit on monday and then rain by late monday night cold rain takes us till tuesday. this is what's really getting interesting. we get into tuesday. wednesday zone here. we have very low snow levels. this is the chance for the east bay hills. this is sometimes your chance once eat twice a year to get some of that. maybe token snow on the cars and so forth and a very high levels. then late in the week. we've got a few showers clearing out, though. they're kind of showers jumping in and out. cold cold highs are going to be lower 50's. if you're lucky, we're putting on the seven-day keeping them in the upper 40's all week long. so for today. yeah. we have some lower 50's and the board. morning sun everywhere. and then the afternoon showers come marching back in again here looks like on the board here, lower 50's but mostly upper 40's camilla. >> well, dave, it's also cold in lake tahoe are taking a live look at the snow conditions. they're all its beautiful like a winter wonderland. but it was also a frustrating christmas for travelers. they were hoping to get through the system a summit and nonstop snow in the

sierra got so bad that caltrans shut down both directions of i 80 and wallace speaks with the drivers who had to wait it out on the highway. >> the snow falling and sticking to the roadways and our local during the day. this is what it looked like along. i 80 in truckee nearly whiteout conditions. those conditions leading caltrans to close both directions of i 80 between here and colfax all the way to the nevada state line. as you can see, that has led to all these cars just waiting. >> for the interstate to reopen. we get here. so no, you're not going today. antoinette stewart was hoping to take her 5 children up the mountain to play in the snow but due to closures in dangerous conditions her christmas plans quickly unraveled. we have to turn around. >> all roads closed closed except for those who live in mountain communities. as for others waiting it out. this woman from the bay area summed

management at the sugar bowl resort to close down yesterday. the storm caused for some power outages on the mountain. it impacted everything from the phone systems to the online store. and right now there's really no timetable on when things will free. open pg and e says that they are aware and hope to have power restored today. if the ski area is closed. officials say refunds will be made automatically. >> now this holiday season. many americans are picking up the pieces of their lives. >> instead of sharing them with loved ones. deadly tornadoes left massive path of destruction in states like tennessee, missouri, arkansas and a huge portion of kentucky just a few weeks ago volunteers with the american red cross are putting the holidays on hold while while they help those residents in those areas. jeremiah marshall has the story. >> harrisburg mother melinda rosario is among the many helpful hands in the trenches

from the american red cross working with recovery services. so families in affected areas can get the help that they need a lot of these folks lost their cars they have no transportation. so we need to be where they are. we've also got teens. there are actually walking the neighborhood going house to house and they can open recovery assistance right there in their driveway. >> rio has been station in tennessee and has helped us as over 1000 homes, there's lots of work to be done even past the holidays. she says typically her christmas consists of spending time with her loved ones, including her 14 year-old son. but this year that will all be on pause. it doesn't matter we celebrate on the 25th. >> or the 3rd whenever we get to celebrate. we're able to do that. these folks here. their trees got blown away. their christmas lights got blown away. some of them are not going to house for a very long time. what we're doing is needed here. i can have

>> good morning. welcome back to the kron 4 morning news. let's start this half hour with a look at the forecast. dave spahr is in the weather center with the latest. dave, how are we ending 2022 when it comes to 2021 wall ready for 2022. but how are we ending 2021 with the weather. i did that with an order i sent out, you know, some flowers and i wrote happy 2023 and i just sent it out thinking, oh my goodness. we're. >> going into 2022. it's a matter of me anyway. common occurrence here. you know, they all kind of blend together. anyway, good morning, everybody. yes, how we're going to do this. we're going on a wet note. however, it looks like towards the end of the week here in pre new year's and so forth. it looks like it's more of a drier trend. but it certainly will

remain cold as a reminder. we're still in winter off to january. looks like right now, the situation we have for you. let's go and check. i think at the radar up right now is what we have. i don't remember what i had to done there. i do stormtracker 4 not much to see for now because it's taken a bit of a break on might even be some false returns. certainly all that in solano county. that's that's false returns. now. a half moon bay looking pretty good as the skies open up temporarily before they fill back up again. they see that collection of cloud cover right off the coast. yeah. it's kind of licking its chops a little bit here. that is for us because can join us at the lunch table a little bit here. so we got the rain redeveloping in the north bay and then throughout the bay in the early afternoon. so that will be the first wave. then there's the juice year one that's going to greet us overnight before dawn tomorrow morning. temperature check for you. it's been quite chilly. we had this little break in the clouds. stop in the rain and all. we're going to get the sun coming out is just getting more energy to allow of operational curse. we're not going to get pretty too for not going very far with

track avalanche danger prompted caltrans to close eastbound state route 88 at the carson spur area and i'm a dork county. there's been a lot of snowfall in the last 24 hours and 1416, 18 inches across the crest somewhere saw multiple feet. this kind of 100 and over the north shore for coming in on a 183% season today. >> from 19%. just back at the end of november at donner pass uc berkeley, central sierra snow laboratory received over 7 inches in the last 24 hours. researchers pondering if the recent snowfall could break the snowiest december record of 179 inches. >> set in 1970 winter start to pick up an upper elevations. a lot of around the region are starting to close down sugar bowl resort closed early saturday due to a power outage. >> high avalanche danger and strong winds affected lift operations at palisades tahoe after receiving nearly a foot of fresh powder in the last day. >> a similar situation at area

ski resorts. the bout operations teams have a lot of work to do with the cats have to dig the lifts back out. ski patrol has to do a lot of avalanche mitigation. the lefties app to get those ramps repaired. so there's a lot of work to do. even at the base operations. the parking lot. just everything in and around the villages. all these to be dug out and ready for tomorrow. the snow will continue to move the national weather service says the result will be between one to 2 feet of snow across the sierra. >> a winter storm warning is in effect stretching into tuesday. >> and according to the national weather service, the windiest days. still ahead on sunday blowing snow will be concern on the roads reporting from san francisco. gayle ong kron 4 news. >> the latest covid surge has forced a san francisco restaurant to close temporarily. the owners of cassava are hopeful customers will understand the move earlier this week the restaurant announced it was requiring proof of a covid-19 booster vaccine for customers.

so far. there's no word on how long the restaurant will remain closed. for the 3rd time this week. a south florida cruise ship has in the center of a covid-19 outbreak. officials with carnival say an undisclosed number of passengers and crew aboard the carnival freedom contracted the virus. the ship was denied entry to bonaire and aruba and the ship has 2500 passengers and 1100 crew members. they were set to return to miami today after an eight-day cruise and a cruise line require passengers to be vaccinated and get tested before leaving last saturday. number of covid cases has prompted the national hockey league to postpone more games. nhl had plans to resume games tomorrow and the league says now it's postponing the entire 14 game schedule. this brings the total number of games postponed this season to 64 and teams are still set to resume practice is starting

today. basketball officials canceled the diamond head classic championship game between stanford and vanderbilt yesterday. it's because of covid-19 issues in the cardinal camp in a tweet. the tournament, the in a tweet. the tournament said that the game will be declared a no contest. the liberty byu game was played as scheduled yesterday stanford which played liberty on wednesday night said on its website website that team related activities are on pause may also add that the status of future games will be determined. its next scheduled game is january 22nd against cow and there's another matchup on january 6 against u c l a which also has caused team activities because of covid-19 now coming up on the kron 4 morning news it's a ballet performance you won't want to miss. >> how one ballerina made her dream come true. you're right.

if you think the prices seem high. in fact, inflation is hitting the highest level. >> in 39 years. the bureau of economic analysis reported us inflation rose 5.7% in the 12 months ending in november. that's the fastest increase in consumer spending, price index since july of 1982 american incomes also rose last month by 0.4%, most of the increase

was because of higher spending on services like housing and utilities. consumer spending also rose 0.6% or a 104 billion dollars heading into the holidays. now, prices may be high. but according to the data, it may be peaking. the u.s. consumer product safety commission recalled nearly 40,000 bunk beds. it's due to potential entrapment and strangulation hazards in beds with angled ladders have a safety issue. it can create a gap between the ladder step and the frame the decision comes after a 2 year old in ohio got caught in a gap in the bug that blatter the child died from strangulation. 3 models are included in the recall. they were sold by amazon. walmart oj commerce and wayfair consumers should stop using the beds immediately and contact angel line for a free repair kit.

rain for a little time before we go to a little bit more of a lighter rain. now remember that this is going to be colder rain coming under a future. and that doesn't tend to be as heavy as of certainly moisture come from the subtropical jet that we experienced early on putting this all into motion. you can see the pattern coming. northwesterly, the typical pattern. we tend to see with our winter like storms. quick check of the winds. they haven't really shifted a good, strong onshore wind yet. in fact, they're fairly calm single digits over most of the geography live shot of sfo to get you started. there are some of the sunlight you can see of the hills behind us that won't last too much longer, though, into the late morning hours. we'll see that redeveloping can see the footprints of the giant coming across the region. all that that's the rain and the immediate aftermath of this first batch that we expect into the evening and then the heavier stuff overnight that we're seeing just starting in the north bay there temperature check for you. it's not your imagination. it is cold even though it's wet along with this mid to upper 30's up in the north bay livermore to 37 along the east

were hurt during this incident. but police arrested that man and recovered a gun. so far. the name of the man arrested has not been released. oakland. police are also investigating a shooting on lakeshore avenue near lake merritt. police say they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. they say the man died some time later at a hospital. if you have any information about the shooting. you can call oakland police now the department says christmas eve was a violent day for the city besides this homicide. they say they were investigating multiple shootings armed robberies and armed carjackings. the police chief plans to give more details about these crimes in a press conference tomorrow. turning to our coronavirus coverage now the biden administration plans to lift its travel ban on 8 south african countries last month. nearly all non us citizens from those countries were barred from entering the

>> welcome back. time for another check of the weather with meteorologist dave spahr. all right, dave, what's it looking like for the last week of 2021. >> like to say it's wet. but you know, it will improve a little bit toward the latter portion of the week pointing everybody and a couple little splotches still on radar here just a touch here. but the irna stuff will be dropping south by the afternoon. it looks like so well, have kind of a tear deterioration of our skies were actually grabbing a few razors sfo. as you can see, just a brief little break l the sun does is it aids thermal dynamically and the evaporation process that just absorbs more heat. so we don't do anything temperature wise even if the sun were out all day. we would be looking at really warm weather either and above us. those colder air to to produce more cloud cover. so it's kind of a lose lose situation as far as those temperatures are concerned, we're pretty trapped. here's the golden gate for you. at least see a lot of surface fog going on. but there's the cloud cover, the background back in the motion. now we have it a northwesterly pattern, which is more typical

of what it's like for the winter months for us again, back to the temperature check. we're still in the 30's up in the north bay. we see 37 off to livermore 39 for concord, but still insulate along the east bay shoreline into the 40's. 46 san francisco 43 for half moon bay. that's the water is a climate controlled. but you get to the inland areas that don't have that and temperatures you see fall off. that's typical at night. now let's hand it to future cast for. again, the skies still out with cloud cover, though probably do so in the next few hours. here's the rain in the north bay dropping south for some showers in the early evening hours. then there's a break and then there's another dose that's a little bit more potent. it looks like as we get to later. overnight in degree. too early for monday morning's commute that will probably be favoring the heaviest rain to the south and the santa cruz mountains. so if you're laid out and about, say 7 o'clock or so things will be slightly starting to improve and sky conditions improve into monday afternoon. monday night. again. temperatures will be somewhat sluggish we add to all of this

close both directions of i 80 between here and colfax all the way to the nevada state line as you can see, that has led to all these cars just waiting. >> for the interstate to reopen. we get here. so no, you're not going today. antoinette stewart was hoping to take her 5 children up the mountain to play in the snow but due to closures in dangerous conditions her christmas plans quickly unraveled. we have to turn around. >> all roads closed closed except for those who live in mountain communities. as for others waiting it out. this woman from the bay area summed up her that caltrans acknowledges closures can be frustrating. but officials stress public safety is the priority. expect some delays hasson patients. >> and keep up to date on what's going on. when the weather is really fierce try to avoid traveling during those conditions and try to go in the next day because we don't want to get stuck out there. that includes the lower elevations where rain becomes a concern.

end of november at donner pass uc berkeley, central sierra snow laboratory received over 7 inches in the last 24 hours. researchers pondering if the recent snowfall could break the snowiest december record of 179 inches. >> set in 1970 winter start to pick up an upper elevations. a lot of resorts around the region are starting to close down sugar bowl resort closed early saturday due to a power outage. high avalanche danger and strong winds affected lift operations at palisades tahoe after receiving nearly a foot of fresh powder in the last day, a similar situation at area ski resorts the bout operations teams have a lot of work to do with the cats have to dig the lifts back out. ski patrol has to do a lot of avalanche mitigation. the lefties app to get those ramps repaired. so there's a lotmof work to do even at the base operations. the parking lot. just everything in and around the villages. >> all these to be dug out and ready for tomorrow. the snow will continue to move the national weather service says

before you head out the door. kron four's amanda hari spoke with the national weather service with what you can expect in the coming days. >> the weather has surely been frightful and i'm told you should get used to seeing this light scattered rain because it's going to be sticking with it's not just christmas day. it's been this entire week. >> our weather pattern has set up so that it's essentially been you know, band after band of rain showers that have been coming virtually since monday. and it's actually accumulating into a quiet little total of rainfall. well, it wasn't a white christmas it's certainly a soggy one. we've actually seen a heavier band of rain that came down and almost all the little bit over the san francisco bay area. and it's just slowly kind of made its way down towards the central coast. now this is citizen video taken in oakland. you can see flooding near foster avenue and bernhardt drive. >> meteorologists with the national weather service bay area david king says we're

>> in the east bay and open officer is on paid leave after an officer-involved shooting on friday. now it happened on 98th avenue just before 04:30pm, in east oakland police say they were responding to a report of a man who flashed a gun at someone when they arrived. police say the man attacked an officer and flashed his gun at them during the incident. an officer shot at the man but did not hit him and no officers were hurt during the incident. but police arrested that man and recovered a gun. so far the name of the man arrested has not been released. oakland. police are also investigating a shooting on lakeshore avenue near lake merritt. police say they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. they say the man died later at a hospital. if you have any information about the shooting. you can call oakland police now the department says christmas eve was a violent day for the city besides this homicide. they were they say

they were investigating multiple shootings armed robberies and armed carjackings. the police chief plans to give more details about these crimes in a press conference tomorrow. turning to our coronavirus coverage now the biden administration plans to lift its travel ban on 8 south african countries last month. nearly all non us citizens from those countries were barred from entering the u.s. the decision came after the omicron variant started spreading. there. those restrictions will end next saturday. california health leaders say the omicron variant is now prevalent in 50 to 70% of new covid-19 cases. omicron is now the most dominant covid-19 variant in the u.s. it makes up nearly 75% of all new cases health experts expected the country's first omicron case here in san francisco. that case involved a man who had traveled to

stormtracker four's showing the appearance of it looks like some rain showers trying to happen because conditions are so cold. we've been seeing from our camera shots even mount tam picking up a couple of flakes hint. expect some of that in the east bay hills later on during the forecast period as well. there's sfo going on here for you. still. basking in some of the much basking. they're going to at least are getting the sunshine going on. there's the golden gate bridge for you to a lot of overcast skies, although again appearing through some of that, some sun temporarily putting this into motion. here's the flow pattern that we have. we're getting a little break upstream here. temperature check 43 in still some 30's to be found here and there. but a nice little recovery off to the east bay's. you'll notice trying to get some of those upper 40's in place here, handing it over to future cast for. again, we have a little break temporarily, then that will fill in with showers developing in the north bay down to the south. that will take us into the evening hours. a little break happens before the juice, your stuff. drop south now, i should mention a lot of the rain that we've had from last week. this

has been coming from the lower to mid latitudes. so that's had a lot of moisture with it because the air is been somewhat mild. you know, temperatures are still actually warmer than they are now in some spots during the rain. and then at night, even in fact, this is a little colder cummings. the south for us. what doesn't have as much moisture with it and more importantly, it's go start pushing down those snow levels. break monday afternoon evening. we clear out just a touch tuesday fill back in again with yet a new batch dropping in from the south. now you couple all of this with some winds. we do have some breezy conditions to make note of. we start to get a little bit of an on shore flow. developing late today. tonight and for your monday. so monday, morning's commute. you've got the rain. i just showed you the onshore winds fighting you a little bit there. so it's going to have kind of that stormy feel for the early morning risers. so little bit of caution because we've already had a lot of rain watch the puddles and all that kind of stuff. and on top of all this to be cold. it's going well in the business of the 40's, maybe even some upper 30's with that too, by

league says now it's postponing the entire 14 games schedule. this brings the total number of games postponed this season to 64 and teams are still set to resume practice starting today. in college basketball officials canceled the diamond head classic championship game. it was supposed to be between stanford and vanderbilt yesterday. the cancellation is because of covid-19 issues in the cardinal camp in a tweet the tournament said the game will be declared a no contest. the liberty byu game was played as scheduled yesterday stanford which played liberty on wednesday night said on its website that the team related activities are on pause. they also add that the status of future games will be determined. its next scheduled game does on january second agalnst cow and there's another matchup on january 6 against u c l a which also has paused team activities because of covid-19.
