the sun start to join us. getting some of the light of day temperature check. not your imagination. yes, little bit of frost scraping might have to do to keep your car sitting in the shade. 27 for santa rosa at this hour. 34 for 41 san francisco and a lot of locations in the east bay not only in the 30's but conquered a 2932 with this hour for antioch. 28 livermore, typical cold air drainage. you can see checking in there. so with all that being said, we do have a freeze warning that's impacting in till 9 this morning of course, the me back off of that. a little bit of temperatures really start moving this morning. winds. not a lot of that, although you can sometimes get frost with a bit of a breeze. not much to report. there is a little wind picking up by tomorrow. however, looking at your day ahead will go out of the 30's into the 40's by 11. 2 o'clock, a cool 52, but at least everybody will see lots of sunshine today, however, into next week we go back into the rain game. we'll have more details on that in a bit. well. >> thanks, dave. the u.s. has set another record for covid

cases for the first time during the pandemic, more than 2 million covid cases were confirmed in a single week that shatters the record of 1.7 million cases set in the first week of january. there were about as many cases nationwide this past week as there were in the entire month of november globally cases are up more than 60% over the previous week. now here at home, there's an effort to stop the covid-19 outbreak before it happens. the west contra costa unified school district is distributing thousands of at-home covid-19 test kits to students today. kron four's camila barco joining us live in the newsroom. camila this is so that kids and teachers don't come back to school tomorrow. unknowingly positive fright. >> that's correct. know students are back to school tomorrow after winter break. now some students and their families may have gathered for the holidays or gone on vacation. but the school district wants to make sure that its students are tested and have a negative covid test before they go back to the

classroom. now this initiative comes after the rising covid cases that we've been seeing in the past few weeks. volunteers are planning to give out nearly 30,000 testing kits to families today. school officials recommend that students take that test before returning to school tomorrow. so students should take the test today. now after students take each test. school officials ask that you upload the results to the school district's online portal and it doesn't matter if it's negative or positive. but if it is positive school officials asked you notify your school as soon as possible. now west contra costa county students can get the testing kits at these locations on your screen today from 10:00am to 02:00pm kennedy high school and pinole valley high school. the sites are drive-thru only. so you must stay in your car and wear a mask as you get the testing kits, bring a student id or a print. now of the student ids number. now, again, volunteers

are planning to give out nearly 30,000 testing kits to families this morning. noel and the asset people be patient because there might be a way for now. back to you. alright camila, thank you. >> for that information. meanwhile, over in san francisco, the union representing san francisco teachers is calling on their school district to make rapid take home tests available before they return to school tomorrow. district officials say covid testing has been available since last spring and they planned to make more testing sites available over the weekend. as for the take home tests. the district says it plans to wait until the end of the school week before handing out the kits provided by the state. the decision has san francisco supervisor. matt haney concerned. >> but the students and the staff will already have been in the school for an entire week before and so the result of that is that we may have some spread in the schools that could be prevented. >> the district says testing is just one part of its safety

>> welcome back. more rain is on its way to the bay area. but the rain we've already seen so far. >> is already making a big difference in our state drought conditions right now only a 3rd of the golden state is in extreme drought kron four's. amanda hari breaks down what the changes mean. >> the meteorologists. i spoke to said we're starting off the wet season in a good place. but he says we're definitely not out of the woods when it comes to the drought. >> it's a great start still have that for just one week separates these 2 maps from the u.s. drought monitor the one of the left is red signifying extreme or exceptional drought. the one on the right is much more

orange showing significant improvement. certainly what period that we've really going back through of legal part of october and even heading into december. we've gotten quite a bit of rainfall. that's helped us out. a good deal. the state has improved from nearly 80% of it being an extreme or exceptional drought to just about 33%. it's both good and some other impacts as well. meteorologist with the national weather service. sean miller says, well, we need the waters. sometimes we get too much at once. you can see that here in this citizen video from oakland on christmas morning. it also resulted in snow that closed roads in the sierra nevada mountains. despite all this. all the state is still experiencing some level of drought. we still got to make up for how dry it's been over the past couple of years or so really need to keep that water flowing through you know, the remainder of the winter season so we can help to felton reservoirs. i did ask miller about what we should expect for the rest of the season. no

deplane and then the flight was totally canceled. airlines canceled more than 2400 us flights saturday that's the highest single-day total since just before christmas. today's cancellations bringing the total since christmas eve to more than 13,000. according to tracking service flightaware. i find all look about like 8 o'clock at night. >> my place canceled. my plate and i have to new plate and i think they want to do tomorrow morning. i couldn't do >> airlines are blaming wintry weather and high numbers of sickouts due to the rising number of covid-19 infections around the country. chicago based united airlines says it had to scrap flights because of the spike in omicron cases southwest says winter weather is forcing it to suspend operations at airports in chicago. more than 40% of flights at o'hare were canceled and delta airlines projects 2 to 300 daily cancellations this weekend due

to dangerous weather conditions and the covid surge, the faa warning of more cancellations over the next few days. >> this latest travel hiccup comes after widespread cancellations that lasted more than a week around the christmas holiday. >> a $10,000 reward is being offered right now for the return of a stolen french bulldog puppy. these are some photos of the puppy. investigators say thieves snatched rosie, the bulldog yesterday morning in san francisco near broaddrick and beech streets. detectives say someone in a silver chrysler 200 got out of the vehicle. and just took the leash right out of the hands of rosie's owner before dragging the puppy back into the car behind them. anyone with any details on this is asked to contact san francisco police. 13 years have passed since oscar grant was shot and killed by a former bart police officer at oakland's fruitvale station on new year's day was back in

>> this is a look at this scene from superior, colorado. last week. thursday as wildfires and high winds in colorado came as a surprise to many residents there are some were caught inside stores in superior, colorado, where the winds and the flames rose forcing a rushed evacuation into the parking lot. drove off. next to some wind whipping a colorado officials says nearly 1000 homes were destroyed. hundreds more were damaged last week. 3 people still missing after a wildfire charred numerous neighborhoods in a suburban area at the base of the rocky mountains. meanwhile, in parts of southern kentucky. residents believe it was a tornado that may have caused some sporadic damage over there. this was

on this sunday morning. an example of the new challenges being created by the omicron variant is the fact that

pediatric hospitalizations continue to rise in cities across the united states in california. 80 covid-19 infected children were admitted to the hospital on the week of december. 20th through the 26th on vaccinated. kids still are more likely to have issues with the disease that require hospitalization kids under the age of 5. still don't have a vaccine available to them. experts say they hope high vaccination rates in some areas will help curb the spread. a 4th covid-19 vaccine could get authorization for emergency use here in the united states as early as next month's novavax submitted its final data to the fda on friday. the vaccines derived from the spike protein pulled from the very first rain of the novel coronavirus a late stage trial showed it was more than 90% effective against a variety of covid variants, including delta. but the maryland based company is still working to develop a

>> welcome back. 7.43 here on this sunday morning. trying to get you ready for another wet week ahead. dave spahr has got all the details on when that rain is going to come into the bay area. hey, good morning to welcome morning, everybody. in the rain is going to be a part of this forecast into next week. only thing is the intensity won't be as grand as what we've seen from before. but we had a good dosing already. so long as we keep it calm. and that's good news. even also a nice sunday before we get there. lots of sunshine with clear skies to give us the frost this morning. >> sun is just starting to filter into portions of the east bay shoreline. temperature. check. still a cold 27 up there to santa rosa livermore. 28 32 antioch resting right there at the freezing mark with some 30's on the east bay shoreline like freeman 3033, for example, in oakland. what's going to

happen up in the mountains. it looks like to going get some more snow going on here. both on monday and tuesday taking a breather on wednesday. but there is a winter weather advisory still being posted until 7 on tuesday. but coupled with this will be a high wind watch. as you can see, no high wind watch means the likelihood that that may be upgraded to a high wind warning and expecting winds to become in some locations. hurricane strength. so if you have maybe the week off or something and jump up there home. maybe snow won't be your biggest problem but will be winds going forward. look at futurecast for today looks pretty good. a few little scattered clouds thrown in there. but here comes that first opportunity for rain on monday. it's kind of scattered about here. again, you can see the intensity not as great as we've been through and a little bit is expected on tuesday. here's the bigger plan, though that's early in the week. a little break. but on tuesday, wednesday, maybe a break cooking in here and then by friday, one last hit. and then we take kind of a breather into the weekend. but notice how the pattern of a lot of this is going on. it's now shifting a little north.

that's kind of an ominous way. we've been seeing a lot of these winter storms in previous years that gave us the ground to begin with. where rainfall amounts were somewhat modest as it was going up and around us. but we've got a good dosing dust far. so as long as we keep the general trend, we should be in better shape. 54 san francisco and mid to lower 50's along the coast. not a lot of mercury moving even with all of a sudden we have today looks like mid 50's also down to the south in the south bay. we're also looking at some frost this morning 58 for san jose 57 santa clara cupertino 56 mid 50's east bay shoreline also tri valley. remember, those numbers are pretty cold this morning. the climb for the freezing mark up to the 50's. so that's a lot of work there. 52 for a walnut creek, 51 for berkeley, but they hold 5149 fairfield and napa sonoma. 51 going on for santa rosa rain jumping in and out of this forecast will be most apparent on monday, tuesday. kind of a breather wednesday a little bit more is expected into friday. we should hold nicely into the weekend and our lows. meanwhile, not too

bad into the 40's and even some 50's along the coast. >> for your health this morning making new year's resolutions their tradition for many people. but the reality is only 8% of people will actually achieve those resolutions. 80% of these resolutions fail by the month of february. if your new year's resolutions have been a source of failure year after year. our health expert walk is here. she's going to give us some helpful tips to make them stick in 2022 karen, thank you so much you know, helping us kind of frame some sort of habits making sure that we stick to these new year's resolutions. mine always fail one of the 80%. yes, i i maybe i try too hard. i don't know. this if if anyone was watching our new year's eve show. we air different resolutions that all of us here at kron. 4 have

mine is budget you know, financially because that's right. tend to have a lot of issues. i i am haven't started anything just yet to try and do that, but maybe after today and these tips will be able to. what's the first step. karen. >> the first one is to get 7 hours of sleep. and i say that because you cannot form new habits when you're tired, period. it just doesn't work. so getting 7 hours. preferably 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep. but here's what happens. your brain sees habits. so that it doesn't have to work so hard. think about the time when you first learned had to brush your teeth and all those steps involved in brushing your teeth. and then now you don't even have to think about it. so the brain works that way seesehabits so that it doesn't have to work is hard and it can store information for other things and it could move on. but when you're tired,

those habits, while they're always they're they're never going to be extinguished. they're always kind of lurking in the background. so when you're really tired, it's going to want to follow the path of least resistance and usually it's that those old established habits. so sure if your brain is going to want to resist change. it likes routine. so in order to create a new routine. you need to be full of energy. yeah. and not worn out. it all starts with sleep. i think a really good tip here that you have be specific, which i think sometimes people are little broad about their resolutions. we're saying definitely got to be specific this year. >> yeah, because lot resolutions fail because they're just too and when they're vague, they don't really promote commitment. you know, one thing i often here as well. i'm going to exercise more this year. well, you know, instead say, ok, i'm going to exercise monday. wednesday friday. 30 minutes on the treadmill 3 miles an

hour. etcetera etcetera something very specific because when you just say i'm an exercise more. you can easily say, today is not that day. i'm going to exercise more. so it's easy to to fall back. and so be very specific and what you want to do. so i guess with a if you have like a financial resolution like i do maybe set a number for how much you want to save. >> per week or per month. something like that. >> yeah. and also be very specific on what days you're going to review your budget. so okay. >> specifics it says also monitoring your progress is really good. yes. monitoring your progress because progress is a positive reward. whether you're moving forward and you might have some slips backwards. but it still you're progressing towards your goal. >> and the brain likes reward because it sees reward as well

when it's when something very positive it's getting rewarded, then it's going to know which habits it wants to repeat, ok, so make sure you're you're embracing everything i feel more energetic i'm making more money i just feel like i'm i'm more accomplished. those are all rewards positive rewards in the brain like and also this next one committing to 30 days basically giving yourself just smaller time increments as opposed to looking at the year as a whole right. >> yeah. for for 2 reasons. you know, you want to take that 365 days and and put it into a doable chunk of 30 days. but i also. >> suggest committing for 30 days every day. so whether it's exercising managing your budget. you look at it every single day. you don't have to do it with the same intensity every single day but just do it every single day because the goal is consistency okay.

and of one thing here, i would really like you say own it becauae a lot of times you kind of maybe said a resolution based on what someone else wants you to do and you got to do something for yourself here. >> yes, that really is resolution is at somebody else's city or so. and this is where i say watch your language and when somebody else as well, you know, you need to lose weight or this in and you're always saying i need to i should do this and and that doesn't mean that you own it. someone else putting some parameters on you. so instead say i want to exercise. i want to manage my money, better. yeah, it is. i want to not i need to i have to so watch your language sorry, shut. okay. thank you. thank for that. and finally keep it simple. >> i think that's something we can take in every aspect of our lives. keep it simple. >> that's right. because we get so enthusiastic the beginning of the year and and

>> good sunday morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron 00:00am morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is sunday january. 2nd, we're 2 days into 2022 and we're starting off with some sunshine. as you can see right behind kron four's dave spahr has got a little bit more detail, though, because the sunshine is not going to be staying around for much longer. this week. we have more rain coming our way. that is correct. good morning. welcome morning, everybody. and we're looking at sunshine filling up the east bay shoreline as well. you know, the clear skies overnight. >> give us the cold temperatures the frost radiational cooling, all that stuff now we're going to be warming up to the 50's. but he's turned the rain off for just a day before it returns tomorrow. 30's cover good piece of the board here. as you can see, 26 still santa rosa 28 for livermore. again, that cold air drainage factor member colder zdan. so it falls dawn of the valleys with to get, you know, get a whole lot way of winds, but that's up to 28 for palo alto in 33 for san jose. so in other spots we don't always see it. it's quite cold this morning to fremont checking in the 30's as well. so we do still

have the freeze warning in place for another hour. technically noting it's covering the valleys off to the east bay. santa clara valley and they're 2 and up to the north bay as well. we're tracking the winds not a lot of that. that allowed those temperatures to fall nicely overnight for today will warm up to the 50's generally speaking up with the bias on more sun, although a couple scattered clouds and maybe some haze in the afternoon. then tomorrow. yes, the rain returns. but the deal is this week. all the rain will be in and out of the forecast. it won't have quite the intensity. a previous systems will be projecting all that coming up in a bit. well, thanks, dave. >> the u.s. has set another record for covid cases for the first time during the entire pandemic more than 2 million covid cases were confirmed in a single week that shatters the record of 1.7 million cases that was set in the first week of january 2021 there were about as many cases nationwide. this past week as there were in the entire month of november globally cases are up more than 60% over the

previous week. of course, many people have been gathering over the holidays. some here at home in an effort to stop a covid-19 outbreak before it happens. the west contra costa unified school district is distributing thousands of at-home covid-19 test kits to students today kron four's camila barco joining us live in the newsroom. camila, this is also the teachers or students don't come back to school tomorrow unknowingly positive right. that's cracking all students are going back to school after winter break. and like you said, there's some students and families that may have gathered for the holidays or. >> even gone on vacation. so the school district wants to make sure that its students are tested and how the negative covid test before they go back to the classroom. volunteers are planning to give out nearly 30,000 at home. testing kits to families today west contra, costa county students can get the testing kits at these locations on your screen. the distribution is happening today from 10:00am to 02:00pm

and you can get them at kennedy high school and pinole valley high school. the sites are drive-thru only so you must stay in your car and wear a mask as you get the testing kits and also bring make sure to bring a student id or a print. now of the student ids number. now this initiative comes after the rising covid cases that we've been seeing in the past few weeks. school officials recommend that students take the test before returning to school tomorrow. so students should take the test today after students take each test. school officials ask that you upload the results to the school district's online portal and it doesn't matter if it's negative or positive. but if it is positive school officials asked you notify your school as soon as possible. again, noel volunteers are planning to get out nearly 30,000 test kits to families this morning. it's a lot so they asked that you be patient when you're in line because there might be a way. noel, back to you. alright

camila. >> thank you for that. we up in marin county, students and teachers receive theirs before they went to the holiday break in san francisco. the union representing teachers there is are calling on their school district to make rapid tests available before they return to school as well. district officials say covid testing has been available since last spring. they did plan on making more testing sites available over the weekend. but when it comes to take home tests. the district doesn't plan to give any of those out until the end of the school week. those tests are going to be provided by the state. the decision, though, has san francisco supervisor matt haney a bit concerned. >> but the students and the staff will already have been in the school for an entire week before and so the result of that is that we may have some spread in the schools that could be prevented. >> the district says testing is just one part of its safety plan, though they do plan on using daily health screenings like they've been doing and they do encourage people to

get themselves vaccinated and boosted. more rain is on the way to the bay area. the rain we've already seen is making a big difference in the state's drought conditions right now, only a 3rd of the golden state is still in an extreme drought kron four's amanda hari breaks down the changes. the meteorologists. i spoke to said we're starting off the wet season. >> in a good place. but he says we're definitely not out of the woods when it comes to the drought. >> it's a great start still have that for just one week separates these 2 maps from the u.s. drought monitor the one of the left is red signifying extreme or exceptional drought. the one on the right is much more orange showing significant improvement. certainly what period that we've really going back through of legal part of october and even heading into december. we've gotten quite a bit of rainfall. that's helped

us out. a good deal. the state has improved from nearly 80% of it being an extreme or exceptional drought to just about 33%. it's both good and some other impacts as well. meteorologist with the national weather service. sean miller says, well, we need the waters. sometimes we get too much at once. you can see that here in this citizen video from oakland on christmas morning. it also resulted in snow that closed roads in the sierra nevada mountains. despite all this. all the state is still experiencing some level of drought. we still got to make up for how dry it's been over the past couple of years or so really need to keep that water flowing through you know, the remainder of the winter season so we can help to felton reservoirs. i did ask miller about what we should expect for the rest of the season. no real strong, clear signal on that just yet. miller tells me will likely have some showers in the coming days. he says they're going to be light. but you're going to want to keep your umbrella like this one here.

chilly out before the rain comes back to the bay area heyday a good well, good morning, everybody. and yes, and we will see for today as we take a little break of the rain shower action that will see in the next week. got some blue skies off to the distance here. but a little bit of a breeze notice by the flag. >> we're going to pick that up a little bit more. so tomorrow night. here it is. this is what our future is tomorrow. but today we get a nice little break here of sunshine temperature. check for you with those clear skies overnight. they fell as you can see, 26 up santa rosa 28 livermore. those are some of the outliers. but elsewhere we see plenty of 30's on the board i'm coming in about 41 now. san francisco in the little recovery starting to take hold as the sun joins us, heading over to future cast for a few scattered clouds to make note of in the afternoon. sure. but it's not till tomorrow that some rain starts to develop. it will be up in the north bay. so for the morning commute probably won't be much of a player because as will develop later on during the day and start to reach other areas of the bay by the afternoon overnight, as you can see into tuesday. so monday, tuesday kind of

unsettled with this rain moving through. but as you can see amounts very light compared to what we had from previous rain events. another feature that will come with this probably more noticeable. we, the winds breezy today. but then tomorrow by high noon. you can see a strong southerly wind here. an approach of that next system. so we'll have it into the approaching about the 20's. it looks like starting the high teens. so it'll be a breezy monday afternoon lingering a little bit to the late night hours. so putting it all together here for today. we've got a frosty start. sunny cool afternoon lower 50's expected for highs. only thing is you don't notice the lows will be as nasty. they'll be a little bit more mild because we have moisture playing in here. considerable clouds. it looks like for this week with monday, tuesday and friday put the days as shower days. it looks like and then into next weekend, sun and clouds mixture still winter's chill. so we're not going to move the temperatures that much staying in the 50's department like this. 58 san jose. little bit of a warm-up for you, folks. also into that freeze warning this morning. 51 antioch

expected for a high of 54 for livermore up to the north bay scratching to about 50. but we'll get more into the weeds on this in your 4 zone forecast. and check out those systems coming all next week. well. >> well, this was the smoky scene in superior colorado as a raging wildfire came as a surprise to shoppers at this store. they were forced to evacuate into the parking lot where you can see it was just covered in thick heavy smoke. a colorado officials says nearly 1000 homes were destroyed. hundreds more were damaged by the marshall fire. 3 people remain missing after that fire charred numerous neighborhoods in a suburban area at the base of the rocky mountains last week. of course, this is all happening in the middle of a cold winter where freezing temperatures and ice now actually cover the rubble left behind from the marshall fire. rachel skytta

has reaction from residents returning home. >> and the wind is so strong a scary sight along highway 93 that somebody is. that soon turned to terror. i had no idea how. >> the fire could have. then on john sub cota captured what appears to be a shed on fire near the intersection of eldorado springs drive. this was thursday in the area where the marshall fire was first reported and not long after firefighters got the first call that first i thought, well, that's that's a big fire. and that recording. he kept recording as the fire took off to the east. that's within 2 minutes. 3 minutes taking over towns and forcing 10's of thousands out of their homes. he had no idea how much damage the stay would bring who would have known that. i would i would have been recording. this video that

would mark such a devastating now a very different scene at that same intersection, eldorado springs drive closed heading east with a line of unmarked vehicles along the road. the sheriff's office vehicle blocked the driveway leading to that shed, which is now just a piece of twisted metal sticking out from the snow. i'm not have no work. it's just. very sad in boulder county. rachel skytta reporting. in other national news residents in parts of southern kentucky believe a tornado touched down and caused some sporadic damage on new year's day. take a look. >> this is from hopkinsville. the area was under a tornado warning by the national weather service. some damage was reported in bowling green as well at a kroger food store and hobby lobby. there. the storms did move out quickly. there have not b4en any reports of anyone being

injured. but this does come after the violent long-track tornado that moved across western kentucky back on december 10th that will of course, cause catastrophic damage in the towns of mayfield and dawson springs. back here in california. and southern california. some developing several beaches are still closed today after 7 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into a channel that flows into the los angeles harbor. according to the city of long beach a 48 inch sewer main line failed on thursday. among the beaches close our rancho palos verde ce beach add a portuguese bend royal palm beach, white point beach wilder addition park beach. at that point from an and caprio beach. >> they were just cleaning recently in carson at this time in a judge just kids couldn't keep constantly happening. >> well, i think it's unfortunate is the spill. but you got to listen to the authorities and down a lot and

they did not say exactly what happened. but police say there was just one vehicle involved that vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when officers arrived on scene. police say they found the 2 people in the vehicle after the fire was put out the crash remains under investigation. taking a look at tomorrow. deliberations in the elizabeth holmes trial are set to continue jurors left the federal courthouse in san jose wednesday afternoon after failing to reach a unanimous verdict today. then took of course the holiday off. but they will be back homes being charged with 9 counts of fraud and 2 counts of conspiracy. she's accused of defrauding investors out of 155 million dollars while she was ceo of her blood testing company theranos holmes faces 20 years in prison if she's convicted. as the omicron variant continues to surge. state officials are trying to get students back to school safely this week. governor newsome

announcing that 6 million at-home covid tests would be distributed to public and charter school students. the state superintendent was in alameda county, distributing those free tests. kron four's amanda hari explains his message to parents and students before school is back in session. >> we're in survival mode trying survive covid. >> and it changes and we have to keep changing state superintendent of public instruction tony thurmond was at canyon middle school in castro valley explaining that the covid-19 crisis is a moving target and testing is going to become the new norm contact your school district or take home test contact your county health. if you want to do testing through the county health program simply put. we want to make sure that takes a test before they come to school officials said it took some time to get the free at home tests. part of the problem was whether with all the snow and rain we've seen over the last week but castro

valley cars filled with parents and students lined up to get their tests. this allows students and families to have what they need in their hand. >> to determine whether they should be sending their child to school alameda county superintendent of schools lk monroe says the 18 alameda county school districts will be able to pick up the test at the county office of education. >> and then distribute them to the students. officials say they understand not everyone will be able to get a test before monday. but everyone should test as soon as they're able to get access to a test. california. >> has been able to keep its schools open at a higher rate than most of the states because of what we're doing here today. officials say it's important that schools continue enforcing masking they say families should monitor for symptoms. >> and if someone feel sick or is asymptomatic and test positive. the child should stay home. state superintendent thurmond also encouraged anyone they can do so to get vaccinated

amanda hari kron 4 news. >> students at uc merced said are set to return to class next month for the start of the spring semester university officials say we're going to be reopening the campus with covid safety measures in place. students and staff are eligible. who are eligible must have received a covid booster shots. those who are not eligible need to get tested regularly face. masks are still required indoors. there will also be no events or gatherings and no more than 50 people outside classroom settings. university officials say classes are set to begin january 18th with remote instruction through january 22nd to give incoming students more time to test for covid. meanwhile, san francisco state university is postponing its in-person commencement ceremony in email sent to graduates. the school's president said after consulting with health authorities, they were encouraged to postpone the event or immediately implement the booster requirement with

source of failure year after year. our health expert walk is here. she's going to give us some helpful tips to make them stick in 2022 karen, thank you so much you know, helping us kind of frame some sort of habits making sure that we stick to these new year's resolutions. mine always fail one of the 80%. yes, i i maybe i try too hard. i don't know. this if if anyone was watching our new year's eve show. we air different resolutions that all of us here at kron. 4 have mine is budget you know, financially because that's right. tend to have a lot of issues. i i am haven't started anything just yet to try and do that, but maybe after today and these tips will be able to. what's the first step. karen. >> the first one is to get 7 hours of sleep. and i say that because you cannot form new habits when you're tired,

perry it. it just doesn't work. so getting 7 hours. preferably 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep. but here's what happens. your brain sees habits. so that it doesn't have to work so hard. think about the time when you first lynn had to brush your teeth and all those steps involved in brushing your teeth. and then now you don't even have to think about it. so the brain works that way sees habits so that it doesn't have to work is hard and it can store information for other things and it could move on. but when you're tired, those habits, while they're always they're they're never going to be extinguished. they're always kind of lurking in the background. so when you're really tired, it's going to want to follow the path of least resistance and usually it's that those old established habits. so make sure if your brain is going to want to resist change. it likes routine. so in order to create a new routine. you need to be full of energy. yeah.

and not worn out. it all starts with sleep. i think really good tip here that you have be specific, which i think sometimes people are a little broad about their resolutions. we're saying definitely got to be specific this year. >> yeah, because a lot of resolutions fail because they're just who they and when they're vague, they don't really promote commitment. you know, one thing i often here as well. i'm going to exercise more this year. well, you know, instead say, ok, i'm going to exercise monday. wednesday friday. 30 minutes on the treadmill 3 miles an hour. etcetera etcetera something very specific because when you just say i'm an exercise more. you can easily say, today is not that day. i'm going to exercise more. so it's easy to to fall back. and so be very specific and what you want to do. so i guess with a if you have like a financial resolution like i do maybe set a number for how much you want to save. >> per week or per month. something like that.

>> yeah. and also be very specific on what days you're going to review your budget. so okay. >> specifics it says also monitoring your progress is really good. yes. monitoring your progress because progress is a positive reward. whether you're moving forward and you might have some slips backwards. but it still you're progressing towards your goal. >> and the brain likes reward because it sees reward as well when it's when something very positive it's getting rewarded, then it's going to know which habits it wants to repeat, ok, so make sure you're you're embracing everything i feel more energetic i'm making more money i just feel like i'm i'm more accomplished. those are all rewards positive rewards in the brain like and also

this next one committing to 30 days basically giving yourself just smaller time increments as opposed to looking at the year as a whole right. >> yeah. for for 2 reasons. you know, you want to take that 365 days and and put it into a doable chunk of 30 days. but i also. >> suggest committing for 30 days every day. so whether it's exercising managing your budget. you look at it every single day. you don't have to do it with the same intensity every single day but just do it every single day because the goal is consistency okay. and of one thing here, i would really like you say own it because a lot of times you kind of maybe said a resolution based on what someone else wants you to do. and you got to do something for yourself here. >> yes, that really is resolution is at somebody else's city or so. and this is where i say watch your language institute when somebody else as well. you

know, you need to lose weight or this in and you're always saying i need to i should do this and and that doesn't mean that you own it. someone else putting some parameters on you. so instead say i want to exercise. i want to manage my money, better. yeah, it is. i want to not i need to i have to so watch your language. sorry, shut. okay. thank you. thank for that. and finally keep it simple. >> i think that's something we can take in every aspect of our lives. keep it simple. >> that's right. because we get so enthusiastic the beginning of the year. >> and and sometimes those those goals and resolutions are a little bit complicated. so, you know, keep it simple of its riding your bike every day. don't. don't tell yourself. let me to go right on the iron horse trail every day because that requires loading up your bike and do and that. but instead of just get on your bike and ride around the neighborhood. so just keep those thing says simple because that will make it sustainable well. and with

entire month of november. now globally cases are up more than 60% over the previous week. now, of course, lots of people have been gathering over christmas holiday. the new year's holiday now. and at home here, there's an effort to stop a covid-19 outbreak before it happens. the west contra costa unified school district is distributing thousands of at-home covid-19 test kits to students today. kron four's camila barco joins us live in the newsroom those details camila. i know this is so no kids or staff members going to the school potentially positive for covid. sure that students test negative before they go back to the classroom and he said some students and their families may have gathered with other people for the holidays or even gone on vacation. so this is all. >> to make sure that everyone is safe. for teachers and students and this initiative comes after the rising covid cases that we've been seeing in the past few weeks. volunteers are planning to

give out nearly 30,000 testing kits to families today and school officials recommend that students take that test before returning to school tomorrow. so ideally students should take the test today after students. take it school officials ask that you upload the results to the school district's online portal and it doesn't matter if the test comes out positive or negative, but it if it is positive, school officials ask that you notify your school as soon as possible. west contra costa county students can get the testing kits at these locations on your screen. it's being distributed from 10:00am to 02:00pm at kennedy high school and pinole valley high school. the sites are drive-thru only so you must stay in your car and wear a mask as you get the testing kits but make sure that you bring a student id or a print out of the student ids number. so again, volunteers are planning to give out nearly 30,000 testing kits to families this morning. it's happening from 10:00am to

02:00pm. there's a lot of people that are going to be out there at school officials. just ask that you be patient while this is happening while back to you. alright camila, thank you for that. >> meanwhile, in san francisco, the union representing san francisco teachers is calling on their school district to make rapid take home tests available before they return to school tomorrow. district officials say covid testing has been available since last spring and they did plan to make more testing sites available over the weekend. as for how available those were. no word here. as for take home test, the district isn't planning to give any out until the end of the school week and that decision has san francisco supervisor matt haney. pretty concerned. >> but the students and the staff will already have been in the school for an entire week before and so the result of that is that we may have some spread in the schools that could be prevented. >> the district says testing is just one part of its safety

plan. leaders say they also use daily health screenings and of course, they're encouraging everyone eligible to get vaccinated and boosted. >> in other news, more rain is on the way to the bay area as dave1was saying. and the rain we've seen so far is already making a big difference in our drought conditions right now. only a 3rd of california is said to be in an extreme drought kron four's. amanda hari has more. >> the meteorologists. i spoke to said we're starting off the wet season in a good place. but he says we're definitely not out of the woods when it comes to the drought. >> it's a great start who still need a bit more. just one week separates these 2 maps from the u.s. drought monitor the one of the left is red signifying extreme or exceptional drought. the one on the right is much more orange showing significant improvement certainly what period that we've really going back through of legal part of october and even heading into

december. we've gotten quite a bit of rainfall. that's helped us out. a good deal. the state has improved from nearly 80% of it being an extreme or exceptional drought to just about 33%. it's both good and some other impacts as well. meteorologist with the national weather service. sean miller says, well, we need the waters. sometimes we get too much at once. you can see that here in this citizen video from oakland on christmas morning. it also resulted in snow that closed roads in the sierra nevada mountains. despite all this. all the state is still experiencing some level of drought. we still got to make up for how dry it's been over the past couple of years or so really need to keep that water flowing through you know, the remainder of the winter season so we can help to felton reservoirs. i did ask miller about what we should expect for the rest of the season. no real strong, clear signal on that just yet. miller tells me will likely have some showers in the coming days. he says they're going to be light. but you're going to want to keep your umbrella like this one

out the crash remains under investigation. happening tomorrow. deliberations in the elizabeth holmes trial are set to continue jurors left the federal courthouse in san jose wednesday afternoon after failing to reach unanimous verdict. holmes is being charged with 9 counts of fraud and 2 counts of conspiracy. she's accused of defrauding investors out of 155 million dollars while she was ceo of blood testing company theranos holmes faces 20 years in prison if she's convicted. united airlines is offering its pilots triple pay as a way to keep them motivated to fly as the omicron variant continues to surge this winter. the triple pay will be extended for united's pilots through the end of the month. the pay bump was negotiated by the pilots union and the airline pilots association united flight attendants will also be getting extra pay to pick up trips over the next few weeks. several other airlines are increasing worker
