a cold there. you can see a little bit of fog off to the distance, not as the parents going on in the city and everything is we're seeing up to the north bay coupled with how cold it is already. 31 santa rosa got a lot of upper 30's up in the north bay 40's cover a lot of the east bay shoreline and still some fog hugging around the delta winds. not doing much so after having all the rain that we had, all that moisture just stated the ground and help generate fog there go. we have a dense fog advisory. this was all covering all the north bay appear good chunk of the north bay. this will be until 10 this morning for fog cast some packed patches of fog up to the east bay and also in the peninsula. a touch pretty good as we go into the afternoon and then we'll repeat some of this looks like it will become bit a parent up to contra costa county and solano counties. more socially might have a different type of outlook for tomorrow for you. but again, back to sunny also tomorrow afternoon. but for today, through the 50's, mostly sunny skies turning that looks much the same for sunday. we'll get more into this coming up in just a bit.

well, thanks, dave. >> governor gavin newsome has activated the national guard to help with the covid-19 testing crisis in california. more than 100 3,000 new cases were reported on friday. yet millions of people in the state say they're struggling just to get tested. more than 200 members of the guard are going to be deployed across 50 testing sites to help boost the staffing levels and make the tests more easily accessible. this is video of members assisting a covid testing site at deer valley high school in antioch just yesterday. that site is going to run today from 11:00am until 7 o'clock tonight, additional sites in alameda contra costa, napa, santa clara and santa cruz counties are all expected to receive assistance from the national guard in the coming days. information for those locations have not yet been released. this all comes as a growing number of bay area schools, colleges and universities are all struggling to keep students in the classroom during the latest covid surge. some are

now extending their distance, learning to try and keep students and staff safe. last night, santa clara university announced isolation housing for students who have tested positive for covid is now at full capacity. officials did not say how many students have tested positive, but they say any students living on campus who test positive in the near future will now be forced to isolate in their dorm rooms, other colleges and universities have been forced to move to online classes that include san francisco state cal state, east bay, saint mary's uc berkeley and uc santa cruz. the milpitas unified school district. also corn ordered a quarantine across all 18 schools in its district. this comes after officials say they had 167 substitute teacher positions go unfilled this week and a quote, exorbitant number of positive student and staff cases. students are expected to return to in-person learning there on january

18th. so we've got another week there. meanwhile, in the east bay, the hayward unified school board has voted to move to remote learning for one week. the vote came down last night after 100, 17 staff members there tested positive for covid-19 in the past few days. kron four's camila barco joining us live now with more on the plan there. camila. after going the board voted 4 to one to go remote, learning. >> for one week like you said, starting on monday, students will return for in-person instruction on january 18. and as you also said, this comes after rise in covid cases across the school district. now, according to school officials, more than 100 school employees tested positive for covid in the past few days. and many more are in quarantine. all those cases have caused a staffing shortage which led to last night's vote. some district leaders think that these that this next week of remote learning will help better manage situation. and

superintendent 9 weighing kids. what he had to say. >> it's with reluctance, but we need to take action to ensure that our students and staff can be safe. we can operate schools and that we're trying to provide a coherent educational experience. >> families will have the option to send students to distant distance hubs at this time. the locations of those hubs have not been announced yet. no questions were raised. whether one week too short of a break for in-person learning school board member sarah prada voted no on the proposal. she was the only one she believes the district should go remote for a month now. know all this isn't the last of this conversation. the board is scheduled to meet again this upcoming friday. and that's one. they'll decide if they need to extend the remote learning timeline. for now. back to you. alright, camila, thank you for that

live report. meanwhile, in oakland, more than 500 teachers called out sick friday to protest for more safety measures. there. >> parents received notice thursday night that the sick out what's happening and classes at 12 schools would have to be canceled. the teachers union is demanding distance learning for the next 2 weeks. but district officials are insisting on keeping students in the classrooms by providing kn 95 masks for all students and employees and also extending teachers covid paid sick leave. >> that our students are safe and we need better masks. you need better testing for all students in the u.s. the bill that the district is not acting with enough urgency about the crisis that we're >> school districts, communications director says the decision by hundreds of teachers not to come into work was not approved by the district as of now the oakland unified school district expecting all schools to be back open on monday. coming up

>> the latest jobs report shows hiring slowdown in december. only 199,000 jobs were added last month as our economy is battling inflation and supply shortages. however, the unemployment rate did dropped almost 4% of pandemic era low and is edging closer to the 50 year low of 3.5% that the u.s. hit back in february of 2020. now as flight cancellations continue to be a major problem all across the country. alaska airlines says they're cutting their schedule by 10 per cent. that's because so many people are calling out sick with covid-19 airline officials say the reductions are going to remain in place until at least the end of the month. last week, alaska airlines announced it had to cancel 170 flights because of winter weather and displaced crew members. airline officials say the cancellations are going to

>> welcome back. it is 7.14, on this taturday morning. and i got to say we have been dealing with some gloomy, gloomy weather. i saw peaks of blue sky yesterday and i'm hoping that we get to know a lot more blue sky this weekend. dave, i think you said that. that's possible. we're seeing lots of sunshine going on for this well, yeah, it's going to be pretty nice weekend there's a couple opportunities for maybe some showers getting into next week. right now the live shot coming in the golden gate bridge. >> as we wait for the sun, really luminaid the sky quite nicely for us. stormtracker for this storm track stays to

the north for now, but you'll see how it's going to graze us over the next week here. temperature check, though, with fog going on. it is quite cold up here in the north bay with those traditional winter like lower to middle 30's going on here. we have 43 for oakland. 47 hayward inland. also 40's, but 38 for concord at this hour. 46, san francisco, this a type of fog we have here is the radiation type fog. unlike the abduction fog that we typically the golden gate that you see in the google pictures and all that fog cast. this is what happens. we do see some fog so kind of lingering a little bit in the east bay, a touch, but then we get to tomorrow, same kind of program with still that low level moisture hanging about might have some of that encroach from the central valley across the delta, as you can see. so we'll see how that all pans out. but that's another thing we may get tomorrow morning will be the way of fog, which this also shows and future cast for mix that basically mostly sunny into the afternoon. again, some fog redeveloping their in central valley, but pretty good for our sunday. then things start

to change sunday night into monday. i think for your morning commute we take the rain part out of that. there's a possibility by tuesday. gray's bice sprinkle here or there. but most of that's going to stay off towards the coast until later winds. they don't do much today but notice how their offshore by tomorrow morning. so a little pop up here in the north bay of some offshore winds. as we mentioned, some of that fog going on in the central valley. breaking everything down for this weekend. it's a foggy start. but sunny to mostly sunny, a cool afternoon as we keep it in the 50's. but it's january. so that's so cool. then this week it's variable clouds, cold nights. we're going to be returning to those 30's again, a sprinkle on tuesday, maybe rain possibility on thursday. that's also kind of maybe and then getting to the next weekend, mostly sunny for saturday sunday. also toying with the possibility of a showers. you see showers jumping in and out here. but the possibility doesn't look as grand as it did before and certainly not the intensity that we've experienced earlier in the season. upper 50's going on for highs as we shake off the morning fog here,

sunny and cool. even for the south bay. a 59 ultimately across the board. you see a lot of mid 50's in play course. we'll take a closer look at all that and the 4 zone forecast and your extended to. thanks, dave. >> the 3 georgia man convicted of murder for chasing and killing ahmaud arbery were sentenced to life in prison jonelle of fort hey has the very latest on the sentencing. >> the 3 men convicted of murdering ahmaud arbery each sentenced to life in prison for travis mcmichael who shot the fatal blow and his father, gregory, both life sentences come without the possibility of parole. their neighbor, william roddie bryan, who recorded the now infamous video of the shooting receiving a lesser punishment life with the possibility of parole for georgia law. he'd have to serve at least 30 years before becoming eligible many he'd be at least 82 years old before handing down the sentences. judge timothy walmsley reflected on the case and the video, the february twenty-twenty killing arbery was that hunted down.

favorable treatment on city contracts. newer faces up to 9 years in prison as part of the plea agreement. he's 6 next set to be sentenced on may 26th. he remains out of custody on bond. a pillar in the oakland community is retiring as the head of a children's nonprofit. that's after dedicating nearly 3 decades to the role. regina jackson is hanging up her hat as the ceo of the east oakland youth development center. during her tenure there. jackson connected young people with all kinds of resources and empower thousands of them to achieve lifelong academic and career success. jackson is credited with creating a national youth development model which is focused on leadership. she has scores of awards and recognitions national and otherwise she's now looking back at 2 major achievements that she's most proud of. >> creating a mechanism by which the young people can be leaders and create the strong pipeline of leadership to take

interstate 5.80 earlier this week. kron four's haaziq madyun has more. >> videos are are extremely valuable. we've just seen that recently with kevin nishita. they had the video of the car. even though the end of the play, they have the car. >> and they were able to find that car eventually and then made arrests on that case. and without that evidence, i'm not sure that would happen. the alameda county sheriff's office is making that call for surveillance cameras in the wake of this week's deadly freeway shooting killing. 28 year-old david when he is a deputy recruit who died after being shot while traveling with the 5 80 freeway in oakland. he was heading home after a day of training at the sheriff's academy and get the cameras out there so we can start solving some of these shootings. alameda county sheriff's office spokesperson sergeant jd nelson says now is the time to take action on this before somebody else is killed in a car to car shooting with the plethora shootings that we had on the freeway, not just our own recruit.

>> but jesper woo. >> you would think that somebody would say, hey, it's time to get cameras up, not just on the freeways, but in the cities as well. >> we have had 6 gun deaths related to gun shootings on freeways in oakland in the past year and we have not closed out any of those in terms solving in bringing someone to justice. we absolutely need camera technology. >> however, oakland city council member laura taylor cautions that the right balance has to be struck between public safety and the privacy rights of local residents. >> you know, can we have a privacy advisory commission that helps us balance the needs to improve safety using technology while also making sure we don't abuse the >> access to that technology nelson says there's no time to waste. i know that in contra costa county, they have a series of cameras that they put on the freeways that have worked very well in solving crimes. and i'm quite honestly

>> and then will clear out. we may see some fog again tomorrow morning, but is far as with the afternoons look like pretty good both today. tomorrow. >> not that in those temperatures either for january. so soak it up. there you see some light start to fill up a little bit. the east bay shoreline right now as we speak. temperature checks still quite cold up there in the north bay. so it's cold with fog going on. and this was all generated kind of locally meeting the low level moisture was in place. temperatures fell and it kind of kind of condensed out a little bit in terms of fog up in the north bay to kind of collect a little bit there off to the east bay. most of the readings are in the 40's. 51 for san jose. check in world quick looks pretty quiet. at least the start of the week. temperatures hovering in the lower 40's there with a good deal. sunshine even as late as tuesday. and there is one system we're looking for their that's been always week and look even weaker. still from our perspective near the coast. but then later in the week, there's a possibility you might start to get some snow showers. okay. the fog i mentioned here you see it on future cast for that clears out nicely and looks pretty good into tonight. redevelops for sunday, although not as

potent. and it looks good for balance on sunday and into monday morning. then things change a little bit as we wait for this next little system to drop south of drop into our area into the afternoon. here's what happens over the wide perspective. let's watch all the hits here. here's the one on monday. through tuesday. then there's another one on thursday. that one looks a bit more potent, but it looks as falling apart as well. not as strong as earlier model runs. we take a breather for the weekend. maybe by sunday we might see the threat of yet more, some more rain showers. but even if we do get hit by these, you see there much weaker than the systems we've had already before. we keep this trend up, then we'll start falling behind again. 56 san francisco to the coast. we're in the mid 50's along the bayside upper 50's at that. not a big difference, but at least everybody's well in the 50's today. 58 for palo alto down here in the south bay. look at some upper 50's at that. 58 per cupertino, east bay shoreline to the south upper 50's mid 50's tri valley because kind of chilly to get things started. the war to climb. 55 or conquered.

that's the fog issue going on around the delta there. 55 for walnut creek. 54 for berkeley. also for 56, a fairfield and napa in 58 going on for santa rosa. great for this weekend are going to catch up for what they need to do and then we get into next week. here's a little possibility of a shower trying to sneak in here. a better one on thursday. we should notice. now these lows will be kind of chilly at times revisiting the 30's. but that's what the clear skies too. and meanwhile, do some 40's at the coast. noel, thanks, dave. >> as omicron variant sends covid numbers soaring across much of the country. many health officials are struggling to keep track of new cases, deaths and hospitalizations. according to johns hopkins university, more than 300 million people worldwide have contracted the virus. nearly a 5th of those cases are here in the united states. health experts warn the real numbers may actually be far greater. brian entin has more.

>> we've seen the long lines for covid tests and the numbers have reflected with doctors and testing sites seeing a surge like never before. the numbers have really escalated. and when we come back after new years, it was like, i mean, almost like nothing we had ever seen. even in the height covid previously, maybe a year or so number is escalating numbers of cases, numbers of deaths. we hear about covid numbers all the time. whether they make us feel better or more nervous. but the truth of the matter is, most experts say while the numbers matter they are not accurate, our liable really are the numbers >> there underestimate their vast underestimate the latest count from johns hopkins university shows the u.s. has had 59 million covid cases and almost 9 million in the last 28 days. but infectious disease expert doctor aileen marty says covid cases are likely 20% higher than the numbers show. >> part of the reason is because so many people are

using at-home tests home tests are so popular. now. >> most people i know aren't reporting the numbers. do you think that's a big problem? >> it that it's a because it's it gives us a false sense of security. and it doesn't allow us to recognize exactly where the hot spots are. remember, surge in cases usually comes weeks before a surge in hospitalizations. and doctor, marty says not knowing where the hot spots are is especially troubling because additional resources can be sent in before hospitalizations get out of control. there's always going to be a problem with numbers. and and you know, not nothing's perfect. you've got to get to as close as you can. and you do estimate. and that's what we've always done for all kinds of diseases. >> that was brian entin reporting for us this morning. experts say the number of covid deaths is also inaccurate because they don't always account for people suffering from a long term. covid. there's also the fact

that many people get covid and then recover without ever knowing they even have it. well, muni says it cannot provide enough services and they're blaming the covid surge and staff shortages. the agency says more than 100 of its employees have contracted covid since last month on top of that, the agency has been experiencing staffing shortages right now. it's missing up to 15% of scheduled muni service, which means riders will need to wait longer than usual for their bus or train. the agency also says more services could be canceled in the future if more operators call out sick. the majority of workers have been fully vaccinated, but there are still a high number of covid cases among them. the white house is working with the u.s. postal service right now to distribute millions of covid home test kits to people who want them. according to the washington post, the biden administration's close to finalizing an agreement to give out 500 million testing kits but to be able to send

them out. the postal service is negotiating with labor unions to extend their season. a workforce of some 40,000 extra personnel who were hired as holiday help. a web site will soon be set up where people can request those at-home test kits. the u.s. supreme court heard challenges to president biden's primary pandemic fighting tools, vaccine mandates for businesses and health care workers. it's the first time the high court's weighing in on the white house's vaccine policies for big businesses. employees must be vaccinated or tested regularly. health care workers at facilities that receive federal medicaid and medicare funds must also be vaccinated. justice amy coney barrett suggested the employer rule is too broad, but justice elena kagan said the vaccine requirement is appropriate. >> but the problem here is its scope and that there's no different haitian between the risk faced by unvaccinated. 22 year-olds and unvaccinated 60 year-olds or industries.

>> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at >> good saturday morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm noelle bellow. it is saturday, january 8th. we've already gotten through the first week of january. >> it was a gloomy one by accounts. dave spahr says that this weekend actually going joy, some sunshine a day. that is true. good morning. well, good morning, everybody. enjoy it. as we take a little break from all of that. here's some sunshine we're seeing filling up the east bay shoreline, as you will notice, their temperature checked. still quite nippy up in the north bay. we're into the 30's. you

can see. 40's cover the east bay shoreline with a 39 going on for concord. 51 meanwhile for san jose. so the climb is much less in the south bay than places up in the north bay. we're also looking at some fog up there in the north bay, not a lot of winds. >> pretty much calm, single digits. that's going to give it to the dense fog advisory. this until 10 o'clock. it's all in the north bay, although our models are showing we'll see some fog still redevelop a little bit for the east bay. just a touch further out. however, it looks like more redevelopment. the central valley spilling across the delta, as you can see tomorrow. so might we do all this again tomorrow? temperatures, though, into the 50's near about 60 and are essentially mostly sunny skies. more of the same to come for tomorrow and the next week. again, we'll be dabbling in and ouo for some opportunities for some showers. we'll get into all of that coming up in a bit. well, thanks, dave. >> governor gavin newsome has activated the national guard to help with the covid-19 testing crisis across the state of california. more than 103,000 new cases were

reported on friday. yet millions of people in the state say they're struggling to get themselves tested more than 200 members of the guard are going to be deployed across 50 testing sites to help boost the staffing levels and make the tests more easily accessible. this is video of members assisting a covid testing site at deer valley high school in antioch just yesterday. that site will run today from 11:00am until 7 at night. additional sites over in alameda contra costa, napa, santa clara and santa cruz counties are all expected to receive assistance from the national guard in the coming days. information for those locations have not yet been released. now, this all comes as a growing number of bay area, schools, colleges and universities are struggling to keep students in the classroom during the latest covid surge. some are now extending their distance, learning to try and keep students and staff safe. >> last night santa clara university announced the isolation housing for students who have tested positive for covid is now at full capacity.

officials didn't say how many students have tested positive, but any students living on campus who test positive in the near future have to be forced to isolate in their dorm rooms, other colleges and universities have been forced to move to online classes, including san francisco state cal state, east bay, saint mary's uc berkeley and uc santa cruz. >> the milpitas school district is facing the same challenge. officials say they had 167 substitute teacher positions unfilled this week and now officials are placing all of the schools on a district-wide quarantine. they're going to go back to virtual learning until january 18th kron four's amanda hari asked the doctor whether more schools should consider following the model. >> school's out again from milpitas unified students. school leaders have put in place a district-wide quarantine after they say, quote, an exorbitant number of positive student and staff

cases. but director of covid response for the ucsf emergency department doctor jeanne noble says moving to virtual learning may not be the best move. i think it's from safety and medical point of view. she says we're no longer in a pre vaccination era. so it's easier to protect kids. >> and that schools are usually very safe. we knew that schools are in retrospect. it looks very much like schools where the safest places for kids pre vaccination. >> that certainly remains the case. post vaccination in an email sent out us dea's office of superintendent. it says all the positive cases have led to even more students and staff quarantining because of close contact. >> but doctor noble says it may not make sense to test people who are asymptomatic. we're doing asymptomatic testing and keeping a lot of pushing a lot of kids into quarantine and really virtually increasing the panic in schools. and it's a it's

really not clear. >> asymptomatic mass child going to school is going to spread covid to anyone. doctor noble says that in person school can sometimes help prevent covid. we have pretty good data showing that kids who participated in person learning in twenty-twenty were less likely to test positive for covid and kids who are in distance learning. and that's just because kids don't just go home and stay home in their bedroom. they're out in the community generally unsupervised. she says when students are in school, they should continue to take precautions to prevent spread. she also encourages everyone that can to get vaccinated. >> amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> it's a similar situation over in hayward. the hayward unified school board has voted to move to remote learning for one week. that vote came down last night after 100, 17 staff members tested positive for covid-19 just in the past few days. kron four's camila barco joining us live now with more on that plan. camila. yeah.

also starting monday, like you said, students will be learning from home. >> for one week now for now, the idea is for them to go back to the classroom for in person instruction on january 18th. and as you also said, this decision comes after rise in covid cases among students and employees. if you remember students return to the classroom this week from winter break. and already officials found more than 500 students tested positive for covid. the school had to close 165 elementary classrooms. and it has impacted 615 at secondary classrooms. according to the school districts, more than 100 school employees tested positive for covid in the past few days. and on friday alone, 365 school employees for have this has caused a staffing shortage and the idea for this remote learning plan is for kids to learn from home, but

also give them time to quarantine. superintendent matt wayne says that this model will help better manage the situation. >> operate school safely with this level of staffing is put in incredible strain. i'm our operations and particularly at our sites and i say administrators and state staff. we know and we want our students to be in school in person, learning. you know, we made the effort to start that at the end last year and fully reopen this school year and we've been able to stay open even as there have been cases in our schools, even as there's been the delta variant and we're reaching a point where operating schools with this few staff is not a safe proposition. >> wing says this upcoming

school week, every classroom in the district will undergo deep cleaning and employees will be given. and 95 mask. families will also have the option to send students to distance hubs. and at this time, a locations of those hubs have not been announced yet. no questions were raised, rather one week is too short of a break for in-person learning school board member sarah prada voting no on the she was the only one she believes the district should go remote for a month now know. well, this isn't the last of this conversation. the board rick's scheduled to meet once again this upcoming friday and they will decide then if they should extend or keep this remote learning timeline. for now, back to you. interesting to see what they decide again next week. camila, thank you. >> for that live report. >> coming up on the kron 4 morning news. the man convicted of killing ahmaud arbery sentenced to life in prison. we have the latest from georgia and the suspected oxford high school shooter and

traveling up to tahoe. this weekend. let's take a live look at conditions on highway 80. as you can see, this is a highway 80 at old state road. i believe but you can see anyone headed up that way there. there's at least one lane that's completely shut down. anyone headed home that's clear and free. at least there's no snow on the roadway just there in the embankments. as you can tahoe highway patrol officer pete man says to have your route planned out and take it slow. if you are headed up that way. >> really open and moving. and part of that is that and coming on, the people that are driving on it, though, making sure your loan yourself down in inclement weather, giving yourself plenty of defense. don't cut off trucks and other vehicle, you know, trying to play yourself out. so not all is imperative to make that it at that aggressive driving maneuver because that's what caused you to lose control. and then you've got a bigger problem.

jose plotting this forward, it snowed in quite a bit of fog in the east bay, but going forward tomorrow. now looks like will redevelop again in central valley spilling into the the delta. just a touch. so we might repeat some of this dense fog again tomorrow has to do with how much moisture we have the lower levels of the atmosphere, not so much that advection fog that we get that comes in from the pacific and drapes across the golden gate. this is more or less homegrown moisture. it's been hanging around as temperatures fell. there you have it in the central valley. and for today again, sunny skies looks pretty good, not bad into our sunday as well. again, starting off a little bit of fog and then by the late latter portion of the night and into monday, clouds redevelop on the morning commute for monday. looks like rain could be taken out of that, though. if we do get any of that will be late on monday in to tuesday. here's the winds a little bit of brisk wind starts tomorrow. now favoring the north bay and it is offshore. strangely enough. it will be some of that fog coming in from central valley. and then you can see it really starts to subside as we go into sunday night monday. so

putting this all together for the weekend. foggy start, sunny, cool afternoon in the 50's for this week. variable clouds on balance with cold night. so we're going to be dip again into the 30's sprinkle on tuesday. that's a possibility. almost a question mark. there. rain on thursday. maybe showers. it's looking less and less then for next weekend got mostly sunny on your saturday. maybe sunday will re introduce some rain showers in the forecast mid to upper 50's expected for highs today. yeah, cool and sunny will do it. note in the morning. fog a little bit. there and across the major board middle to upper 50's as well. we'll get more into this in your 4 zone forecast in check in to that extent that as well know. >> thanks, dave. in national news, the 3 men convicted of murdering ahmaud arbery in georgia have been sentenced to life in prison. >> because individuals here in this courtroom. took the law into their own hands. >> travis mcmichael, his father, gregory mcmichael,

were given life without the possibility of parole. the 3rd man, william brian, was given life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years in february of 2020 arbery was jogging through a suburb when he was confronted by 3 men. then they shot and killed him. arbery's mother spoke before the sentencing >> these men. have chose to lie. and attack my and his surviving family. each have no remorse. and do not deserve any leniency. >> the 3 men still face a federal trial where they are charged with hate crimes and attempted kidnapping. jury selection for that begins next month. prosecutors and defense attorneys for 3 former minneapolis officers who are charged in the death of george floyd are asking a judge to postpone their state trial. the attorneys say they want to

wait while a federal civil rights trial goes forward. the 3 officers are scheduled to go on trial on state charges of aiding and abetting both murder and manslaughter. on march, 7th. they also face a federal trial on january. 20th on charges alleging they violated floyd's civil rights. the teenager charged with killing 4 classmates and michigan is set to go to trial. 15 year-old ethan crumbley waived his preliminary hearing this morning. he's charged with murder and terrorism for the november attack at oxford high school. kb son has the latest on the new details revealed in court. >> knowing that still you decide waive your right to a preliminary exam. >> 15 year-old ethan crumbley waving a key evidentiary court hearing, meaning his case now goes right to >> is being charged as an adult with murder and other crimes after shots rang out

november. 30th roughly 30 miles north of detroit. 4 students were killed. others were injured at oxford high school. ethan crumbley's parents, jennifer and james crumbley had been in jail involuntary manslaughter ce p- charges of their own. they're accused of making a gun accessible to their son and refusing to take him home earlier in the day of the shooting when school counselors confronted them with disturbing drawings of violence. but the facts of this case are so egregious. >> reading this document, looking at it, reading the words, help me with a gun. >pblood everywhere. this doesn' just to have impact me as a prosecutor and lawyer. it impacts me as a mother. new allegations about the team's passion for guns and boast about violence are also now coming to light. >> a prosecutor stating even crumbling made a video with a different gun and told a

friend in a message it was, quote, time to shoot up the school. >> also noting even told his mother and text messages that he thought there was a demon ghost or someone else inside of the home may of 2000. 21, he was torturing killing >> he did this at the family home. he filmed himself to it if illness on his he says the parents failed to intervene in these scenarios. >> and after their son had regularly search for information about school shootings and guns. >> but defense attorneys insists the crumbleys didn't know that a school shooting was in the works and didn't make the gun easy to find at home. today the crumbleys tried to get their bond lowered from $500,000 to 100,000 and leave jail there. they were not trying to flee your honor, the work. they playing risk. they were not a flight asking that the court granted motion to reduce the but the move was denied by a judge. >> who noted the couple failed to turn themselves in when

come back after new years, it was like, i mean, almost like nothing we had ever seen. even in the height of covid previously, maybe a year or so number is escalating numbers of cases, numbers of deaths. we hear about covid numbers all the time. whether they make us feel better or more nervous. but the truth of the matter is, most experts say while the numbers matter they are not accurate, our liable really are the numbers >> there underestimate vast underestimate the latest count from johns hopkins university shows the u.s. has had 59 million covid cases and almost 9 million in the last 28 days. but infectious disease expert doctor aileen marty says covid cases are likely 20% higher than the numbers show. >> part of the reason is because so many people are using at-home tests home tests are so popular. now, most people i know aren't reporting the numbers. do you think that's a big problem?

>> it that it's a because it's it gives us a false sense of security. and it doesn't allow us to recognize exactly where the hot spots remember, surge in cases usually comes weeks before a surge in hospitalizations. and doctor, marty says not knowing where the hot spots are is especially troubling because additional resources can be sent in before hospitalizations get out of control. there's always going to be a problem with numbers. and and you know, not nothing's perfect. you've got to get to as close as you can. and you do estimate. and that's what we've always done for all kinds of diseases. that was brian entin reporting for u.s.. experts say the number of covid deaths is also an accurate because they don't always account. >> for people suffering from long-term covid. there's also the fact that many people get covid and then recover without ever knowing they even had it. >> now, many younger people are children are who are not

yet eligible for the covid vaccine are ending up in hospitals and an alarming rate. there's now a large spike in the number of children under the age of 5. >> hospitalized with covid-19. the cdc says the trend underscores the need for older kids and adults to get their shots to protect those around them since mid december with the highly contagious omicron variant spreading quickly, the hospitalization rate in the youngest children doubled from 2 per 100,000 children to 4 100,000 children. young kids who are obese, have diabetes or lung disease are also more likely to catch the virus. when's the best time to get tested for covid after you've been exposed to the cdc has a few suggestions they say get tested at least 5 days after you last had close contact with the person with the virus, the date of the last close contact is considered day 0 fully vaccinated. people should get tested 5 to 7 days after close contact with the person suspected or confirmed with having covid. and

according to the cdc, people who have tested positive for covid within the past 3 months and recovered do not have to get tested as long as they do not develop any new symptoms. the skyrocketing demand for covid tests has led to a rise in new testing scam. san francisco health officials are warning of an authorized covid testing sites across the city like this location and a tweet advertising free pcr testing at a tent near dolores park. that's not on the list of san francisco's authorize testing sites. if you'd like to find that list, you can head to s f dot gov. slash get tested. it's not just a problem here in the bay area. health officials in san diego are also warning about fake pop-up testing sites. they say, meanwhile, any of the sites are collecting any information. they're not releasing test results. the county's chief medical officer says there are red flags. people should be looking out for.

>> when you ask what test is being around and what to what labs are running at and what organization there with or who the ordering physician is. they can't tell you any of that. and they also can produce a document showing that they're a medical professional many times, which you have to be in order to be collecting that type of in the field. >> officials say no testing site should ever ask for any non medical information like your social security number, such the red flag as well. stick with us com for more news continues after this.

advisory is gone. 30's up to the north bay. 41 nevado and napa and off to the east bay. we have a lot of 40's in place not just along the coast here it is. it's gone. now. it may return a little bit tomorrow, though, but ended a different spot here. we watch the projections overnight. here comes the fog redeveloping in the east bay around the delta. so it's a possibility we may have a little bit of that in the forecast tomorrow. look ahead for today. we've got 52 by 1 o'clock by for basically it turns mostly sunny, with most of the readings in the 50's to upper 50's at that, expect more of the same for tomorrow next week. you know, we'll have variable clouds with the possibility of showers jumping in and out of this forecast. but mild temperatures know. thanks, dave. >> governor gavin newsome has activated the national guard to help with the covid-19 testing crisis here in california. more than 103,000 new cases were reported on friday alone. yet millions of people in the state say they're still struggling to get themselves tested more than 200 members of the guard are going to be deployed

across 50 testing sites to help boost the staffing levels and make the tests more easily accessible. this is video of members covid testing site at deer valley high school in antioch just yesterday. the site's going to run today from 11:00am until 7 o'clock tonight, additional sites in alameda contra costa, napa, santa clara and santa cruz counties are all expected to receive assistance from the national guard in the coming days. information for those locations have not yet been released. but when we receive them, we will relay those to you. now, this all comes as a growing number of bay area, schools, colleges and universities are all struggling to keep students in the classroom during the latest surge. some are now extending their distance, learning to try and keep students and staff safe. last night, santa clara university announced isolation housing for students. >> who have tested positive for covid is now at full capacity. they didn't say how many students have tested positive, but any more students who are living on campus who test positive in

the near future are going to havehto be forced isolate in their dorm rooms, other colleges and universities have been forced to move to online classes, including san francisco state cal state, east bay, saint mary's uc berkeley. >> and uc santa cruz. developing in the east bay, the hayward unified school board has voted to move to remote learning for just one week. the vote came down last night after 100, 17 staff members tested positive for covid-19 in the past few days. kron four's camila barco joins us live now with more on the plan ahead. camila. >> yeah, also starting monday, students will be learning from home for one week. and for now, the idea is for them to return back to the classroom on january. 18th. now decision comes after a rise in covid cases among students and employees. if you remember, students came back to the classroom and just this week after winter break and already

officials found more than 500 students tested positive for covid according to the school district. more than 100 school employees also tested positive for the virus in the past few days. now, i friday alone, 365 school employees were absent. and this has caused a staffing shortage. the school had to close 165 elementary classrooms. and it has impacted 615 secondary classrooms this week. now the idea for the remote learning is for kids to learn from home, but also give them time to quarantine as well. as for the teachers superintendent matt wayne chimed in last night during at that meeting. here's what he had tt say. >> operate school safely with this level of staffing is put in incredible strain. i'm our operations and particularly at our sites and i say administrators and state staff. we know and we want our

students to be in school in person, learning. we're reaching a point where operating schools with this few staff is not a safe proposition. >> now, says his upcoming school week, every classroom in the district will undergo deep cleaning and employees will be given n 95 mask. families will also have the option to just send students to distanced hubs at this time. a locations of those hubs have not been announced. no questions were raised, whether one week is too short of a break for in-person learning school board member sarah product voted no on the proposal. she was the only one. she billy is the district should go remote for a month now. noel, this isn't the last of the conversation. the board members are scheduled to meet this upcoming friday. they will then decide whether they

georgia man convicted of murder for chasing and killing ahmaud arbery have been sentenced to life in prison. jonelle forte has the very latest on the sentencing. >> the 3 men convicted of murdering ahmaud arbery each sentenced to life in prison for travis mcmichael who shot the fatal blow and his father, gregory, both life sentences come without the possibility of parole. their neighbor, william roddie bryan, who recorded the now infamous video of the shooting receiving a lesser punishment life with the possibility of parole for georgia law. he'd have to serve at least 30 years before becoming eligible many he'd be at least 82 years old before handing down the sentences. judge timothy walmsley reflected on the case and the video, the february twenty-twenty killing arbery was that hunted down. >> because individuals here in this courtroom. took the law into their own hands. the hearing began with bryant's attorneys filing a series of motions. all of them denied. >> followed by opening

arguments in the in a series of emotional victim impact statements from arbery's i have a future that was taken from him. a sense of balance with >> so that he is that's what you in milan. over and over. see that what the rest of my life these men. have chose to lie. and my and his surviving family. each have no remorse. and do not deserve any leniency. >> in a surprise move we didn't hear from character witnesses for any of the defendants. instead, it fell in the defense attorneys to ask the judge for leniency their main argument that their clients don't represent the worst of the worst. nothing in travis mcmichael's life suggest that he's a danger to society. now. >> or will be a danger to society 30 years from now.

should also improve security as the parking areas are now going to have access. the calls are growing to install surveillance cameras on freeways and alameda county after alameda county sheriff's recruit david nguyen became the latest victim of an apparent senseless act of violence. he was shot and killed along interstate 5.80 earlier this week. kron four's haaziq madyun has more. >> videos are are extremely valuable. we've just seen that recently with kevin nishita. they had the video of the car even though they didn't have the play, they have the car. >> and they were able to find that car eventually and then made arrests on that case. and without that evidence, i'm not sure that would happen. the alameda county sheriff's office is making that call for surveillance cameras in the wake of this week's deadly freeway shooting killing. 28 year-old david when he is a deputy recruit who died after being shot while traveling with the 5 80 freeway in oakland. he was heading home after a day of training at the

sheriff's academy and get the cameras out there so we can start solving some of these shootings. alameda county sheriff's office spokesperson sergeant jd nelson says now is the time to take action on this before somebody else is killed in a car to car shooting with the plethora shootings that we had on the freeway, not just our own recruit. >> but jesper woo. >> you would think that somebody would say, hey, it's time to get cameras up, not just on the freeways, but in the cities as well. >> we have had 6 gun deaths related to gun shootings on freeways in oakland in the past year and we have not closed out any of those in terms solving in bringing someone to justice. we absolutely need camera technology. >> however, oakland city council member laura taylol cautions that the right ballot has to be struck between public safety and the privacy rights of local residents. >> you know, can we have a privacy advisory commission that helps us balance the needs to improve safety using

technology while also making sure we don't abuse the >> access to that technology nelson says there's no time to waste. i know that in contra costa county, they have a series of cameras that they put on the freeways that have worked very well in solving crimes. and i'm quite honestly amazed that that cameras does not exist in alameda county. >> has he let you crowd for news? >> later this month, the vallejo police department is set to roll out new audio analysis software. it's set to transcribe the audio from an officer's body camera in real time. police chief shawny williams says the software developed by will make it easier to review body camera footage, a process which typically takes hours and often only happens after major incidents such as the deadly vallejo police shooting of 22 year-old sean monterrosa. in that case, it was determined based on body camera video. the officers involved failed to de-escalate the situation.

>> it's a game changer. it's going to help me to fulfill a promise that i made as a chief 2 years ago to be more accountable to be more transparent and to be a more inclusive. >> the audio will be transcribed once officers dock their body cams back at the police station. the same software is currently being used by the alameda police department. on to our coronavirus coverage now as the omicron variant sense, covid numbers soaring across much of the country. many health officials are struggling to keep track of new cases, deaths and hospitalizations, according to johns hopkins university, more than 300 million people worldwide have contracted the virus. nearly a 5th of those cases are here in the united states. health experts warn, though, the real numbers may actually be far greater. brian entin reports. >> we've seen the long lines for covid tests and the numbers have reflected with doctors and testing sites seeing a surge like never

before. the numbers have really escalated. and when we come back after new years, it was like, i mean, almost like nothing we had ever seen. even in the height of covid previously, maybe a year or so. number is escalating numbers of cases, numbers of deaths. we hear about covid numbers all the time. whether they make us feel better or more nervous. but the truth of the matter is, most experts say while the numbers matter they are not accurate, our liable really are the numbers >> there underestimate their vast underestimate the latest count from johns hopkins university shows the u.s. has had 59 million covid cases and almost 9 million in the last 28 days. but infectious disease expert doctor aileen marty says covid cases are likely 20% higher than the numbers show. part of the reason is because so many people are using at-home tests home tests are so popular. now. >> most people i know aren't reporting the numbers. do you think that's a big problem?

>> it was that it's a because it's it gives us a false sense of security. and it doesn't alcow us to recognize exactly where the hot spots are. remember, surge in cases usually comes weeks before a surge in hospitalizations. and doctor, marty says not knowing where the hot spots are is especially troubling because additional resources can be sent in before hospitalizations get out of control. there's always going to be a problem with numbers. and and you know, not nothing's perfect. you've got to get to as close as you can. and you do estimate. and that's what we've always done for all kinds of diseases. >> that was brian entin reporting for u.s.. experts say the number of covid deaths is also an accurate because they don't always account for people suffering from long-term covid. there's also the fact that a lot of people get covid and then recover. but that ever knowing that they even have the virus. many younger children who are not yet eligible for the covid vaccine are ending up in

hospitals at an alarming rate right now, according to the cdc, hospitalizations of children under 5 have surged to more than 4 in 100,000 youngsters since mid december. that compares with the current rate of one per 100,000 for children, ages 5 to 17. when's the best time to get tested for covid after exposure. the cdc has a few suggestions. they say you should get tested at least 5 days after you've had. after you last had close contact with the person with the virus, the date of the last close contact is considered a 0 fully vaccinated. people should get tested 5 to 7 days after close contact with the person suspected. or confirmed with having covid. and according to the cdc, people who have tested positive for covid within the past 3 months and recovered do not have to get tested as long as they don't develop any new symptoms. solano county is now offering covid booster shots for teens 12 to 15 years old. you can

get the shot at fairgrounds. mass vaccine clinic. it operates every friday and saturday from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. they accept both appointments and walk-ins go to solano county's website to make an appointment and also to find other pop-up vaccine clinics. and the white house is working with the u.s. postal service to distribute millions of covid home test kits to people who want them. according to the washington post, the biden administration is close to finalizing an agreement to give out 500 million at the kits, but to be able to send them out. the postal service needs to negotiate with labor unions to try to extend their seasonal workforce of some 40,000 extra personnel. they were all hired as holiday help. a web site is going to be set up soon where people can request those at-home testing kits. local authorities say they're getting reports of people selling fake at-home covid test kits online. here's some advice from the federal trade commission on how to make sure the test you are buying

hit a deer, put it in their vehicle and then realized it was still alive. but just kept on driving anyway with a live deer in the back of their car. officers had the passenger take the deer out let it go free. the 19 year-old driver wasn't so lucky, though she was actually taken into custody as part of the dui investigation. buh thankfully that deer back in the wild. a missing dog in the england. finally back with her family 8 long years after she was stolen. >> this is the emotional moment. kasey, a cocker spaniel was reunited with her rightful owners. the dog had been stolen from her front garden back in 2013 and was kept for breeding all this time. police tracked her down after a scanned her microchip.
