>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> good saturday morning to you. thanks for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm noelle bellow breaking this morning. coastal california, including parts of the bay area are under a tsunami advisory. some larger waves caused by a volcanic eruption near the tonga islands could be hitting our shores over the next few hours. again, this is only an advisory, but if you are one who was headed to the coast may be headed for a morning surf. you should be aware of this. take a look at this. this is satellite imagery showing the undersea volcano erupting late last night. the

hunka hunka hop high volcano eruption sent large waves crashing onto the shores of the pacific nation of tonga. people had to rush to higher ground. there has it triggered a tsunami warning for them. there have been no immediate reports of injuries and the extent of damage to the area is unknown right now. but here locally, the national weather service is reporting peak waves of just one to 2 feet are possible. national weather service warning of possible minor flooding in some low-lying areas. so just something to be aware of. if you are headed out the door, headed to the coast for maybe a coastal hike or like i said, surfing something like that. the senate over today's far, he has a little bit more detail for us. what are you, sam? >> pretty much the you know, kind of more elevated tides. you might get a little bit this morning where water is just kind of an eyeball view of all. we have a this, of course, the sun joining us. we have a different lighting situation, but this is half moon bay. it looks pretty typical. what we see during

the morning hours. quite a bit of cloud cover that we're looking at as well. temperature check into the 40's. got 36 up to santa rosa, 50 for oakland. 45 meanwhile, going on for hayward moisture down to our south in terms of rain in southern california were being spewed by again, some of that high cloudiness that will be with us all day today. so we'll probably saw a call, a kind of thicker high cloudiness on balance for your saturday. winds have been offshore as what we have to very bowl single digits for the most part and some of that fog that's around the delta extending off to the sacramento valley. that for you, folks is going to cost your temperature forecast highs a little bit today compared to elsewhere throughout the east bay temperature. check for us today. again, that high cloudiness that coming up at times, we'll call it mid 40's or mid 50's up to about 60 or so they have a close look at your forecast coming up in a bit. noel. >> thanks, dave. big story this morning after a week of virtual learning the hayward unified school board has voted to return to in-person learning starting next

tuesday. but the district is taking new safety measures as they move back into the classroom. kron four's camila barco joining us live now with the latest details. camila. yet the morning. also, school board members were divided on whether to go virtual are not for this upcoming school week. however, by a 3 to 2 vote members of the state decided that students should go back to the classroom next week. the district >> voted if you remember to go remote last week after many teachers contracted covid quarantine. that decision came with a financial risk not during last night's meeting. the superintendent raised the same concerns with keeping classes virtual for another week. he says the district wrist losing 2.5 million dollars each day if their campuses are closed due to their daily attendance requirements. and the california department of education reiterated to school officials that virtual learning is not an option. the superintendent also said that

students will not be prepared for finals in 2 weeks and the district would not be able to offer their services for special education students if they continue remote learning. he also said that the spread of covid is greater in the community and schools. now, the school district says that they are adding safety measures for this upcoming week. take a look at your screen. for example, students are going to have a soft entry back to school. there's going to be grab and go meals to limit the interaction between students and staff. there's going to be virtual staff meetings. there is testing for high school athletics before practices and student performances will be virtual through february 14th. now, noel originally, the school went to remote learning after a staffing shortage with that was caused by the virus. however, the superintendent says that there is enough faculty and staff to supervise the students moving forward. now, monday is a holiday, but students are expected to go back to the classroom starting on tuesday. back to you.

alright, camila, thank you for that. latest information we'll check in with you again. >> in the next hour, another big story we're following this morning. some pharmacies are closing their doors all weekend long because of staffing shortages due to the spread of the omicron variant, walgreens. and cvs. both announced temporary closures kron four's gayle ong the latest. >> pharmacists ended testing they've prescribing vaccines, administering vaccines. they've been doing a monoclonal antibody infusions. those are just some of the additional duties assigned a pharmacist during the pandemic. >> michael hogue, former president of american pharmacists association says the extra workload has lead to burnout. so when you add omicron on top of that situation, it definitely creates quite a problem. >> a problem we are seeing nationwide, 2 of the country's largest retail pharmacies are temporarily closing stores on weekends due to an increase in the number of covid-19 infections among staffers. in

a statement to kron 4, a walgreens spokesperson says in part this is extremely limited in on a store by store bases and not specific to any region are area as we make every effort to staff and keep pharmacies open for our patients in the community. a cbs spokesperson says the store closures on water boat days of the weekend are temporary. >> and in response to the fast-spreading omicron coronavirus variant as well as a nationwide staffing shortage with this particular new variant. >> we're experiencing staffing shortages again. doctor maria lopez owns and runs the mission wellness pharmacy in san francisco. she's not surprised to hear of the big chains having to scale back in 20 years of being a pharmacist. i've never seen. >> so many people stressed out. we're tired. we're working on the frontlines of the pandemic. a pharmacist provided a lot of vaccines in this country. as well as you know, that their piece or a or and newly outs. walgreens and cvs did not say which stores in the bay area will be closed. that pharmacists say

with fewer staff, you may notice longer wait times at your local pharmacy. you want to give your pharmacy a call and ask for your refills a little earlier than you normally would just so that they have time to prepare them to just remember that. >> we're working on the front lines and and doing the best we can. >> gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> well, starting today, private health insurance companies are going to be required to cover the cost of at-home covid tests. the biden administration announced the change in order to lower the cost and make testing more convenient. health insurance providers will be required to cover the cost of up to 8 at home tests per person per month. as of now, you'll have to make a claim with your insurer using the receipt from your purchase to get that money back. officials say there's a plan to make that reimbursement process happen automatically at the point of purchase. but that is still in the works. now the federal website where people can request free at home covid-19 test tests will launch next

week. it is covid tests dot gov. that's a web site. the white house says orders are going to be accepted starting next wednesday, january 19 supplies are going to be limited to just 4 tests per home. those tests are free, including shipping fee. but the white house says tests are going to typically ship within 7 to 12 days of ordering. so you have about a week almost 2 weeks. wait time to get those tests. coming up here on the kron 4 morning news forty-niners are getting ready for a big playoff game against the dallas cowboys. >> we talked with fans heading to texas for the big game. and after the break. be careful before you scan your next qr code. what you need to know to avoid becoming the victim of a scammer.

to our breaking news that we are following the tsunami advisory that's being issued for the bay area. the alameda office of emergency services is telling people to get out of the berkeley marina. this tweet just sent out a few minutes ago. it set telling folks to get off your boat and off the docks. now evacuation order is due to that tsunami advisory that's scheduled to arrive around 8.10 this morning, one to 2 feet waves possible they say that it's carrying dangerous energy that can damage boats and docks. the national weather service tsunami alert. also urging west coast residents to be prepared for impacts in the bays at harvard's harbors. if you live aboard your you are being urged to seek shelter and higher ground. so if you're watching this from your your make sure that you find

yourself a safe place because of the tsunami advisory technically goes into effect in about 15 minutes and it's going to continue for the next few hours, sending it over to dave now for a little bit more detail on our forecast this morning. hey, dave. >> a warning dog owner morning everybody. we're going to a half moon bay here and just eyeballing it there you see kind of the waves at work here starting from the blue skies. we have the blue picture that will improve. we get but we're daylight. we do quite a bit of a thickening up with a high cloudiness. but we're also looking at high tides to reach a san francisco about shortly after 9 o'clock. so coupled with everything that's going on here, that's going to elevate that even further. so it's kind of like a king tide situation. watch for some coastal flooding is a possibility. maybe areas that don't typically get flooded may get a little bit there. so again, anywhere near water is where you run a little bit of that risk and sometimes and harbors and so forth and get channeled and get artificially high tides with that 2 and a high event from a tsunami like this going gate bridge that we

have right going on here. looks like an oven over overcast situation. but again, it's that a mixed bag. some scattered clouds and high cloudiness again from a system towards our south. we're just getting the pieces of this. we saw this upstream but a week ago, but it's not really a weather maker for us. accept just to paint the skies with some cloud us. the moisture means all down to the south temperature. check out. 36 anna rose is the only cool spot. a little bit of fog off towards the east. that's going to keep temperatures down a touch of tri valley livermore. you look at the 38 right now. a cool afternoon relative to our neighbors elsewhere in the east bay here got a lot of 40's already. 42 for san jose. 48%, carlos, back the future cast for we'll see some scattered clouds bubbling up from the south going on today. so it's not one of these systems coming out of the gulf of alaska. it's coming in from the south. could this is a mid latitude little system. again, it doesn't hold any rain for us, but out of the south, it will do that. looks like we'll say the same game again tomorrow. and even as late as monday, some of this cloud

flooding on the tonga islands here at home. it's going to cause up to one to 2 feet waves there's also just as some potential for flooding in some low-lying areas. we do have some video from half moon bay showing the waves crashing at miramar beach there. so you can see i'm a little bit more active here. this is kind of combining with high tide at this point as well this morning. so if you are planning to get to the coastal or to go to the coast this morning for maybe your morning walk or maybe you're thinking of kayaking this morning, maybe hold off on that until later today as this is expected to last for the next several thanks again for joining us here at 7.31, let's take a check of your forecast right now. dave spahr has got the details. hey, dave. >> hey, good morning. well, good morning, everybody. and battling quite a bit of cloud cover. we can see from those shots as well as we see from downtown san francisco as

well. same kind of shot that we're seeing also on the east bay shoreline with quite a bit of cloud cover. this kind of hovering around a little bit as well. check into our current conditions we have going on. we could flipped over to cool down to southern california here. that's where that low is. it kind of migrating from the mid latitude a little bit, but it's spraying us with this high cloudiness, which we're going to probably get all weekend long. but at times kind of mixed in with some stratus as we go forward as well. breaking today down for us will get about 60 or so by 2 o'clock. quite a bit of cloud coverage you can see here again, we're on the northern edge of everything coming up in our general direction. cool temperatures in spots like santa rosa. 36, 38 for livermore. these valleys where the cold air tends to settle at night 40's over most of the district, 50 san francisco also open in. 45 going on for hayward. just a comparison of 24 hours ago. most readings are actually a little bit ahead, although in spots like livermore, they're trailing as well as san

francisco by a bit there. a little more. almost 10 degrees for highs today will go with the lower 60's. looks like getting to about 66 or so for san jose in a little bit. we'll take a look at that 4 zone forecast for you. check the extended as well. high tide, by the way, is due a little bit after 09:00am for today from san francisco standpoints. this all works in tandem with the riding high tide to go out. thanks, dave. >> big story we're following this morning. there are some promising signs the omicron surgeon might be close to peaking here in the bay area. even so health experts say there will still be several rough weeks ahead. kron four's dan kerman explains. >> over the last week, lab samples from wastewater collected in santa clara county show. a drop in the amount of covid-19 at 3 of the counties for wastewater treatment plants. health officials say it's a sign the infections may be starting to come down. i want to provide a glimmer of hope to the community that this isn't going to go on forever and ever and ever. and while signs

are promising, doctor cody warns this is no time to let your guard down. at the moment. >> we are still in the middle of the greatest surge that we've during the entire 2 year pandemic and every layer of protection is incredibly important for 2 reasons. helps to protect ourselves and equally important. it helps to protect our community and bring us through this as quickly as possible. experts say once wastewater numbers drop, it typically takes a week to 10 days for cases to begin to drop. >> but they say that could take some time, meaning a tough end of january and a tough beginning of february could still be ahead. so we're going to be a very high level of cases. >> for a good while in spite of the fact thatowe're coming down, hopefully our descent is going to be as rapid is the ascent was. and that means will come down fairly quickly. but it's still that's going to translate into serval weeks of

a lot of cases. so we're going to be seeing a lot of transmission still for a while. that means over the next several weeks. you want to continue avoiding large gatherings. you want to continue distancing. wearing that most protective - mask. there is dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> also in the south bay with the demand for covid tests as high as it's ever been. santa clara county health officials hope to clear up some confusion right now. you have the at-home antigen tests and pcr tests that require an appointment. santa clara county health officer doctor sara cody suggests only using an at-home test if you already know you have covid and are waiting to test out of isolation. a pcr test, meanwhile, is best used if you suspect you may have been exposed as it can detect even trace amounts of the virus. she's also suggesting you don't use a pcr test when you know you're already sick because those tests can come back positive, even after here, no longer contagious.

doctor cody also offered this request. >> please do not use emergency rooms as testing centers. emergency rooms are there for people who require emerge-cy care. >> doctor cody said the new testing website from the federal government should help with the high demand for those at home tests. the annual homeless census in the bay area is going to be delayed a little more than a month due to covid concerns. and the statement, alameda county officials say they have moved the count to february 23rd contra costa, san mateo and santa clara counties moved their accounts back to february. 24th. similar statements were issued in los angeles and san diego as well. authorities canceled the 2021 head count during last year's winter covid surge. the last homeless head count was back in january of 2020. a warning from the nation's top doctors about why people should not be careless about exposing themselves to covid-19.

doctors say while many people are only experiencing mild symptoms from the omicron variant, it can still be dangerous. chip yost explains. >> this week, more evidence from a southern california study showed the omicron variant is not as bad as the delta variant that preceded hospitalizations are much less likely. icu visits are much less likely in death is much less likely. such findings might have some people saying if almost all of us are likely to get exposed to omicron at some point, why not just expose yourself on purpose and get it over with. but medical professionals say that's not a good idea. and here's why. >> as more people that get infected, you're still a percentage that will get sick severely, especially if they're not vaccinated. and that percentage could be could be significant out of 10,000 people. if you know, 300 of

those have severe illness here in california. that's going but more pressure on our health care system. and this week, the pressure on the health care system prompted president biden to send more military members out to the nation's hospitals. >> to help them out. in an interview we did thursday, u.s. surgeon general vivek murthy talked about some of the reasons hospitals are under such pressure with the supposedly less dangerous omicron that in some ways it can seem contradictory, right? we have. >> a virus. it seems to be milder yet. we have our hospital systems that strain with more hospitalizations than any other point during pandemic. and here's here's why. this makes sense. because even though the the virus may be milder in terms of its impact on an individual, it is so contagious and spreading so quickly that the sheer number of people who are getting sick is extraordinary. and even if a small portion of those individuals end up in the hospital is still a large number of people just because of the sheer number of individuals being infected. so

san francisco to help prevent people's cars from being towed. the new program is only for san francisco residents. it's called text before toe and it's now in effect to the mta board. director came up with the idea saying san francisco's already expensive enough without having to deal with telling fees the 2020. >> 12,500 people we're told for these reasons. and even if half of their car now, because this program that's over 6,000 people that will not get a $600 and this way will be able to provide some relief for people and just parked in the wrong place. didn't realize that weather part where they parked a was a tow >> authorities will call for the tow truck and only then will you get a text and those trucks often arrive within about 5 minutes. so unless you're basically on the spot, you could still be out of luck. we do have details about this new program on our website. kron 4 dot com.

>> welcome back. 7.45. on this saturday morning and we are under a tsunami advisory here in the bay area. the entire california coast actually under this advisory of it's all due to a volcanic eruption in the tonga islands. there a volcano undersea volcano that erupted caused some major flooding there in the tonga islands here. we're going to see between one and 3 foot the national weather service issued the tsunami advisory. it started officially around 7.30. the waves are going to continue to really come dangerous. currents are expected to begin around 8.10, for the san francisco coastline. the san francisco department of emergency management just requesting that you move away from all san franc sco beaches, harbors or marina docks. and piers, right now they say not to drive. of you know, excuse me, move on foot to do not drive.

if you are in a safe area, just stay there. if you're planning on visiting the coastline this morning, definitely hold off on that because this is going to happen this. we're going to end of this advisory for the uext few hours. and i'm starting at around 8.10, this morning. that's going to combine with some of the high tide. so it's definitely just going to be a lot better for everyone. if you stay away from the coastline this morning. again, this is a tsunami advisory, which is a step above a watch. so that does need to stay out of the water and away from the dave spahr has been looking at half moon bay a little bit. that was video from half moon bay that you saw a little bit earlier. so we are starting to see some waves. dave. >> the little bit the way some elevated tides. we'll see as we approach around the morning hours. you can also get this 2 from underground landslides to along the continental shelf. that's a possibility. and even tahoe, you can get that when you get underground. landslides occur as well. sfo, no delays this morning. what kind of overcast sky conditions temperature check

into the 40's over most the region. we have 50 san francisco oakland, a chilly 36 going on for santa rosa up there, which won a tahoe later on this week. well, not there's a possibility. a couple little snow spurts going on, but not much more than that. 45 expected on tuesday and also on monday, there with just a mixed bag of sun and clouds. so dry as we go. although the good news is the drought monitor says lot better shape than we were earlier in the season. we want to be trailing too much longer. this our wet season got to catch up. now we normally watch the northwest because that's where our systems come. this one coming in from the south. unfortunately, it's not making the kind of pattern. we've to see these bill further north to help us out. it's in southern california, but spewing us with the high to mid-level clouds throughout the day. we see this on future cast along with today. that's going to continue through tomorrow. as you can see into tomorrow afternoon as well. be patches, clearing out a little bit. but you can see it's not really bringing any rain our way at all. longer-range forecast models of that

eventually starts to phase out and systems from the northwest that we're normally watching it materialize for much of anything, not a chance of picking up any rain. it looks like for the week ahead. unfortunate our wet season here. 4 zone forecast. 61 covers us that san francisco lower 60's towards the coast and also on the bay side foster city, 63 palo alto. 64 in the south bay. we have 66 for santa claire. also cupertino, east bay shoreline to the south. we've got mid 60's tri valley, though, lower 60's at that. 61 for walnut creek, concord at 61 little in the way. some fog this morning. 64 for a san leandro. 58 going on for of allay 60 for fairfield. 62 napa. 66 santa rosa. and again, we're kind of stuck in this pattern all week long. variable clouds of color, kind of mostly cloudy on monday. temperatures remain and the lower 60's to the period and our lows. not too bad around 40 going on inland for the winter months. that's very mild. meanwhile, the coast upper 40's no. well,

>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> thanks for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm noelle bellow that breaking news we're following this morning. coastal california, including parts of the bay area under a tsunami advisory this morning. some larger waves caused by a volcanic eruption. near the tonga islands could be hitting our shores. there are eating starting to hit our shores. now, this is only an advisory, not necessarily a warning or anything like that, but it is going to cause some larger waves for us. take a look at this video. satellite imagery showing the undersea volcano erupted late last night. it's called the hung that tonga up. high volcano. it's an undersea volcano that sent large waves crashing onto the shores of

the pacific nation of tonga. hawaii has started to see some waves up to 2 to 3 feet. that's about what we're expecting to see here along the california coast. a possible danger does include bays and harbors. so there's been an alert issued. i know buy advisor, excuse me. there's been an alert issued that day. if you are in the bay or the harbors to get out. this is some video from cal fire czu down in san mateo county. this is half moon bay showing some of the waves. that's the thing. they're not very large, but they are continue. s the current could be a little bit aggressive. so officials are asking folks to steer clear of our coastal areas this morning. advisory is expected to reach san francisco in about 10 minutes. that's going correspond with high tide for san francisco, which is another hour. dave spahr. i know as a little bit more detail on that. but me to

county office of emergency services has issued this warning to get out of your boat and off the docks. now, if you are in them this tsunami advisory is scheduled to arrive again in about 10 minutes there along the alameda coastline, one to 2 feet away as possible. so not very large, but they do carry some dangerous energy that can damage boats and doc. so if you need a little bit more information, we're going to continue to update you but first, let's send it over to dave spahr. he's got a little bit more detail on our weather forecast in general high date. >> good well, good morning, everybody. and just take a look at half moon bay. we don't see anything really that different going on here. but we are approaching high tide about another hour or so and probably similar to what we're talking about with the king tides and so forth. there might be some coastal flooding along with this with little bit more aggressive, higher tides with that. when you hear a story like this, you're thinking about an asteroid impact of the ocean, not something you want to see. it doesn't want to happen in our lifetime. hopefully 40's going on, as you can see all over

the board here. 39 for livermore. 43 for antioch. 37 chilly degrees up there to santa rosa. we say that also because the fact this all this cloud cover that allow great cooling overnight, a kind of slowed and hasten that a bit. this is all being churned up from the system towards our south and southern california where there are getting rain with this. we tend to watch our northwest this time of year. 4 systems dropping south this season. they've been coming from mid latitudes and sending us rain3this way. one fortunately, this is cute too far to the south to do, which must much good on that front. meanwhile, the winds little bit of an offshore wind cooking here, not much kind of single digits, lower teens. 57 will do it by noon by 3 o'clock. generally speaking, variable clouds on balance with temperatures reaching the lower 60's, not bad for a mid to late january like this. more on your forecast coming up in a bit. well, thanks, dave. >> to some coronavirus news now, a big story this morning. some pharmacies closing their doors all weekend long due to staff shortages due to the

spread of omicron walgreens and cvs both have announced temporary closures of stores kron four's gayle ong has details. >> pharmacists have ended testing they've prescribing vaccines, administering vaccines. they've been doing a monoclonal antibody infusions. those are just some of the additional duties assigned a pharmacist during the pandemic. >> michael hogue, former president of american pharmacists association says the extra workload has lead to burnout. so when you add omicron on top of that situation, it definitely creates quite a problem. >> a problem we are seeing nationwide, 2 of the country's largest retail pharmacies are temporarily closing stores on weekends due to an increase in the number of covid-19 infections among staffers. in a statement to kron 4, a walgreens spokesperson says in part this is extremely limited in on a store by store bases and not specific to any region are area as we make every effort to staff and keep pharmacies open for our

patients in the community. a cbs spokesperson says the store closures on water both days of the weekend are temporary. >> and in response to the fast-spreading omicron coronavirus variant as well as a nationwide staffing shortage with this particular new variant >> we're experiencing staffing shortages again. doctor maria lopez owns and runs the mission wellness pharmacy in san francisco. she's not surprised to hear of the big chains having to scale back in 20 years of being a pharmacist. i've never seen. >> so many people stressed out. we're tired. we're working on the frontlines of the pandemic. a pharmacist provided a let of vaccines in this country. as well as you know, that their peace or unfair fees that are and newly outs. walgreens and cvs did not say which stores in the bay area will be closed. that pharmacists say with fewer staff, you may notice longer wait times at your local pharmacy. you want to give your pharmacy a call and ask refills a little earlier than you normally would just so that they have time to prepare them just remember that.

>> we're working on the front lines and and doing the best we can. >> gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> starting today, private health insurance companies are going to be required to cover the cost about home covid tests. the biden administration announced the change in order to lower the cost and make testing more convenient. health insurance providers are going to be required to cover the cost of up to 8 at home tests per person per month. as of now, you're going to have to make a claim with your insurer using the receipt from your purchase. officials say there's a plan, though, to make the reimbursement process happen automatically at the point of purchase. however, that is still in the works. the federal website where people can request free at-home covid-19 test launches next week. that's called covid tests dot gov. that's a website to request it. the white house says orders are going to be accepted starting next wednesday, january 19th supplies will be limited to just 4 tests per home. the

tests are free, though, including know shipping fee. the white house, though, says the tests are typically going to ship within 7 to 12 days of ordering. so you're gonna need wait a little bit before they arrive. all right. so continue to stick with us here on the kron. 4 morning news. we're continuing to follow the tsunami advisory that's been issued for the entire california coast. we've got all the details for you next.

here up in monterey county. and then up here the bay area, there. the advisory is starting exactly right now. 8.10, this morning, high tides expected to come over the next hour or so. so the 2 of those combining is what makes this a bit of a safety issue. so if you are planning on going to the coast this morning, whether that was for surfing taking a walk, kayaking, something like that. you are% being asked to steer clear of the harbors and the bays and the coastline will continue to follow this breaking news as we receive more information. the annual celebration train offered by caltrain on doctor martin luther king junior day is not going to be running this coming monday due to the pandemic. instead, caltrans going to be operating on a modified schedule. this is that we're showing you from 2020, the traditional 54 mile ride up the peninsula pays tribute to the 1965 march. doctor king led from selma to montgomery, alabama caltrain

>> welcome back. 8.14, on this saturday morning. we're continuing to follow a breaking news of the tsunami advisory that's been issued for the entire california coast. it's all due to an undersea volcano that erupted late last night. it cause some serious flooding over the tonga islands over in the pacific coast here at home. we're going to start seeing about one to 3 feet of waves along our coastline, which has triggered that tsunami advisory. dave spahr giving us a closer look at half moon bay seeing what we're dealing with down there. dave. >> all right. good morning. well, good morning, everybody. and not just from eyeballing,

it looks we're getting the water's edge. just touching the grass. from this perspective here, i haven't always seen this picture. so i not necessarily trying to verify that. that's what's the case. but we are near high tides and it looks like we're getting higher tides at work here. so it's kind like the king tide. you might get some flooding in areas that you don't always get flooding going on. so just a little caution near the water. you want to be not so near the wate. with this going on. plus, if you're in the water as well, again, the currents can be sometimes rough with that because water goes higher up and then it's up to go down somewhere else to level off. so can be problematic there, too. golden gate bridge shot there. you have the cloud cover in place. little bit of a stiff breeze at work here out of the east. so little bit of an offshore wind. but this cloud cover is going to be around with us all day today. so variable clouds part the best way freezing up of that means some of those high to mid-level clouds. we're getting a piece of this low that's down south and southern california. that's where all the action is. we've had these

mid latitude systems before that were kind of juicy and they came right up in our area. we have a system coming in from that gulf of alaska work in tandem with all of that to give us some time. some fireworks. well, this this is far to the south and will stay there. it's not going to see any impact in terms of rain. 40's going on. all right. now, 51 for oakland, san francisco. 37 for santa rosa. 39 also for livermore, not as cold as we've seen it in the morning that morning. months for the winter months in the morning hours. that is one of the reasons why we have this cloud cover all work here in little bit of influence from the slow down south. so gives us a temper. it kind of start to our day. so expect kind of being dogged by this cloud cover just about all day today, kind of some pasty white skies that work with that. then as we get into sunday, more of the same, i think we'll see some better patches of clearing going on. maybe in the afternoon. but this will linger all the way through monday and the sort of kind of goldilocks kind of situation will be in. it looks like for the week ahead, not

getting any rain but not totally clear either in temperatures pretty mild. so saddam, we advisory still in place bay area, coastal flooding is possible throughout this morning. we're looking at high tide reaching here in about an hour or so for the weekend. it's high clouds, mild temperatures in the round, 60 degree range. and then for this next week, that should be next weekend, rather, variable clouds dry, mild into the 60's again for today with 2.61, san francisco, 66 san jose. 63. meanwhile for oakland and most of the region in the lower to middle 60's. more in your 4 zone forecast. coming up and just a bit. well. >> thanks, dave. getting a little bit more in depth here on this tsunami advisory that's been issued for the entire california coast. joining us now via zoom is lieutenant jonathan baxter with the san francisco fire department. thank you for joining us. lieutenant. i know that the fire is out patrolling our beaches right now. what can you tell us about what you guys are are doing?

>> well, first of all, everybody who is affected on the islands from this. so i mean, this eruption you our hearts and nurse supports definitely going out to open right now in san francisco, along with the most cities and on the coast in california, we are seeing what we're anticipating to be a one to 3 wave surge coming in 6 sessions for the next six-plus hours today. the more important factor in even higher danger to this is the undertow or comedy for to rip current. that's going to be associated to this. these can actually poured grown adult into the water and you can become a victim which nobody wants to be. so we're asking people to stay away from the coastline. stay out of the water. this is a request at this time. we have not put out an official evacuation, but we are asking, please, listen to your public safety representatives, whether it's a police uniform, a fire uniform repair buddy uniform for asking you to stay out of the water. it's poor reason. we're asking you to please adhere to that advice.

>> definitely when it comes to these one to 2, one to 3 feet doesn't necessarily seem so large. but like you said, it's that under current. that's really the issue right? >> that is correct. the undercurrents, the biggest issue right now to put in perspective, the one to 3 foot waves. when you see our king tides come and you see a high tide come in, it's going to be the equivalent to that in most areas. however, we are working very closely as the citigroup with the national weather service to really evaluate this on you know, almost minute to minute basis to make sure that we're affectively giving the right information at the right time related to these ways. but we do know for a fact that 2 out this, it's that the biggest concern for us in san francisco is going to be that undertow and that rip currents. so again, please stay out of the waters along the coastline. >> when it comes to folks who i know that we have lots of folks who might live on their boats in the harbor, in the in the harbors in the bays. what is your instruction to those folks?

>> at this time, if you're on a vessel that's underway, not necessarily in the harbor, but in open water. stay away large objects such as fox is going to normal. it was hopefully but make sure everybody is wearing a life jacket. make sure waves. prop the railings on the side of the vessels throughout this time period. if you're of out for gore in the harbor at this time with your vessel, we are asking you to be carted to put some extra buoys out between the harbor and your vessel to make sure that if you do get a surge of the way, just not going to help a damaging effect on your vessel and again, make sure that you're staying off of that area if you don't necessarily have to be there, if you do have to be there, stay in the vessel. stay away from the actual side of the vessel on the side of the harbor, the fort. >> and and and folks who like you mentioned, you know, if you are planning to to get out there and and and surf this morning. i mean, it's a beautiful morning. otherwise we've got kind of blue skies, sons, sunny skies. this is definitely not the day to do

it. you said 6 hours is how long we're going to be dealing with us. >> yeah, the national weather service is expecting this to last for at least 6 hours coming in 6 sessions. so it's not going to be a 6 hour you know, marathon, it's going to be coming in 6 sessions throughout a 6 hour period for the national weather service. so you are right on the money there, please. if you are thinking about going surfing into thinking of going out under kayaker your vessel, please consider a different day. you know, your first responders already tax with everything that's been going on throughout the last couple of months, especially years. but the covid of the pandemic. and we really appreciate your help and listening to our advice to be safe. san francisco fire department save >> as you guys do your best to patrol our anything else. you want folks to keep in mind today. >> yeah, you know, there's so many things in san francisco that you can do other going to

>> welcome back. 8.31. on this saturday morning. back to our breaking news of a tsunami advisory that's been issued for the bay area. you're being asked to steer clear of the coastline. it's active right now and was triggered after a volcano erupted in the pacific ocean. kron four's camila barco joins us live now with more information. camila. >> yes, and walmart are people to listen to those warnings are saying some people out of the beach doing some water activity and they say that today is not the day to do that. like you said, this is not me. this is not advisories due to volcanic eruption in the top the islands. and if you take a look at your screen, this is a satellite image of the volcano. a rough

day. it's quite an image, but it's the sensible, large waves crashing onto the shores of the pacific nation of time. now the volcanic eruption on the island has caused for a tsunami. a tsunami advisory here locally. and that means that they're strong, dangerous currents in san francisco in along the coast, it could impact beaches, the harbor marina, docks and piers near the shore. and right now you're taking a look at half moon bay can see that the waves start steady, but they're also rocky at some points and he shouldn't. and you should expect that these waves are going to be up to 3 feet tall and they're expected along the coast with some minor flooding. now, the san francisco emergency department is asking people to move away from the beaches, the peers and the dogs. they also asked that people not drive around because this will help emergency crews get to where they need to. if they have to go somewhere. and if you are in a safe area, advise that you stay there. but if you're

>> in the next hour, dave spahr has been monitoring the live camera in half moon bay he's joining us now with a little bit more detail date. >> hey, good well, good morning, everybody. doesn't look like it's his aggressive right now as we saw from before. but noticing people out and about this is me advisory. if it was a tsunami one of the lines they tell you is if you can see the ocean, you're too close. storing a warning. you know, people just caution here this morning. it doesn't look to be as high as it was about 15 minutes ago. but this is going to be, as you heard, very organic. and it's basically a simple as this one water pushes out in one direction has to take it away from somewhere else that has to level back out again. everything has to balance out, you know, a little to newtonian physics going on here for you. and that's what's happened in the ocean bay. just think of how much energy was released from all this to make the pacific ocean move like this. all right. satellite picture we've got going on high to mid-level clouds right across the bay area. today, the moisture that's down south and fortunate get any of that

going to the high cloudiness that can up at times, though, for today. so not going to be real. real sweet for outdoor activities. but you know, very but clouds will call it temperatures, not bad. upper 50's to near about 60 looks like calling it mostly cloudy, getting into the afternoon. i think tomorrow we'll have a better break in those clouds going on for your afternoon. and it looks like this will linger through monday, but it looks like next week is fairly dry as well. we'll get into some of that coming up and noel, thanks, dave. >> another big story we are following this morning. there's some promising signs the omicron surge might be close to peaking here in the bay area. even so health experts say there's going to be several rough weeks ahead. kron four's dan kerman explains. >> over the last week, lab samples from wastewater collected in santa clara county show. a drop in the amount of covid-19 at 3 of the counties for wastewater treatment plants. health officials say it's a sign the infections may be starting to come down. i want to provide a

glimmer of hope to the community that this isn't going to go on forever and ever and ever. and while signs are promising, doctor cody warns this is no time to let your guard down. at the moment. >> we are still in the middle of the greatest surge that we've during the entire 2 year pandemic and every layer of protection is incredibly important for 2 reasons. helps to protect ourselves and equally important. it helps to protect our community and bring us through this as quickly as possible. experts say once wastewater numbers drop, it typically takes a week to 10 days for cases to begin to drop. >> but they say that could take some time, meaning a tough end of january and a tough beginning of february could still be ahead. so we're going to be a very high level of cases. >> for a good while in spite of the fact that we're coming down, hopefully our descent is going to be as rapid is the ascent was. and that means

>> 39 here on this saturday morning. and there's a new program being offered in san francisco to help prevent people's cars from being towed. that new program is only for san francisco residents. it's called text before tell. it's now in effect. the mta board director came up with the idea saying san francisco is already expensive enough to live in without having to deal with those expensive telling fees in 2020. >> 12,000, 500 people we're told for these reasons. and even if half of their car now, because this program that's over 6,000 people that will not get a $600 and this way will be able to provide some relief for people and just parked in the wrong place.

>> a 44 on this saturday morning continuing to follow some breaking news of a tsunami advisory along the california coast here in the bay area. our beaches are impacted by this. all due to that under water. a volcano in the pacific ocean that erupted last night. dave spahr taking a look at half moon the water was a little bit closer to the grass there a little bit earlier. but it seems to receded a little bit day. >> yeah, i'm not real. real familiar with how the tides always go here, but from our eyeball viewpoint, look before like it was. and that's going to be continue to be the case because water goes high in some locations. it goes lower and others. and that's going continue over the next few hours all this morning and into the early afternoon, we

are store approaching the high tide, though, on balance for san francisco. that will be a pretty cheap in about a half hour. 37 stop the santa rosa 40's over most of the district. 39, meanwhile, for livermore got 42 san jose just jumping up to the mountains. real quick, what we've got 40's going on with quite a bit of cloud cover as well as look. we get much in the way of any snow. there are 2 little opportunities for the week ahead. that may come to pass, but very, very modest as we're looking for because of the recent rains that we've had and also adding to the snow cover as well. we're now into the severe category. that's still not great, but it's a big improvement from the exceptional in extreme covering most the bay area from before. so we need to make up for this. hopefully soon as this is the what time of year and don't want to miss this window. so what we have in the weather front, what's going on? little system down the southern california. we're just getting sprayed by some of the high to mid-level clouds up our way. that's going to continue today. also tomorrow, it looks like i think we'll see a better break, though, in the skies

tomorrow and then continuing. that looks like into monday as well with quite a bit of that cloud cover longer-range. nothing really changes the slow kind of drifts set, if you will. and then up to the northwest new systems. but we don't get the potent impact down south. it's also the northwest and most of activity is and this is very familiar with our dry, dry or drought years. looks like this pattern is returning for an el nino year here. so looks like it's clearing its throat a bit. it's 61. san francisco looks like a lower 60's off towards the coast. meanwhile, along the bay side will also stick it in the lower 60's. looks like 64 for palo alto mountain view at 63 66 san jose and morgan hill looks like we'll do that for also cupertino, los gatos mid 60's east bay shoreline, tri valley at 61. also for walnut creek, 64 berkeley, the late h.o.a. to cool. 58 60 going on for fairfield, by the way, 62 for napa and santa rosa at 66. 61

morning. kron four's camila barco joining us live with the very latest information on camila. what can you tell us about our local beaches? >> well, in all right now we're learning that the san francisco recreation and parks has closed its a marina parking lots because of this tsunami advisory and the national park service has also closed ocean beach. so if you're planning to look at the what the conditions are out there. you're not going to have any luck. they have clothes that close that off to the public for people's safety. and they are just warning people. they are just urging people to listen to the warnings. they are asking people to stay away from the beaches, the piers docks because today is not the day to go out there now know well, like he said, a tsunami advisory is due to volcanic eruption in the town. the island's you're taking a look at satellite image of the volcano erupting. it's quite an image, but it's also sent a large waves crashing onto the

shores of that pacific nation of tonga. now, the volcanic eruption on the island has caused for a tsunami advisory here locally. and that means that there's strong, dangerous currents and the alameda county emergency service is also in 80 people from the berkeley marina, the ask anyone to get off their boat and off the here in san francisco in this could impact the beaches to harbor the marina, the docks to hear anything near the shore really. and you're also going to take a look at half moon bay. you can see that some of the ways they're they're also rocky at some points. but the national weather, the national weather service says that these waves can be up to 3 feet high along the coast with some minor flooding. i just went on twitter and i also saw that santa cruz right now is seeing some flooding because of this. the san francisco-marin to get emergency department is asking people to move away from the

beaches of piers and the they also asked people not to drive around because this will help emergency crews get to where they need to go. they also say that if you are in a safe area right now, stay there. but if you are on a beach, a dock or up here and you feel like your life is in danger, call 911. now, while we spoke about this earlier, the national weather service says that this is not going to be just an hour or 2 long that this is going to be throughout the world throughout the day. the waves are going to come and go. so, know, of someone that has not been alerted of the tsunami advisory or is going out to the beach or going out for a run along the coast. let them know what this just for their own safety. noel. camila, thank you for that. we know it's going to be lasting for at another 5 hours here at this point. thank you for that live report. camila. i know that our high tide time is

coming right this second here in san francisco. dave spahr has got a little bit more detail on that date. >> okay. good morning. well, good morning, everybody. continue to it looks like and half moon looks like the waters back up again near the grass just by eyeballing it here. that's going to continue all this morning that we have. it takes a while for this. all to be absorbed by the whole ocean basin here. a lot of energy, but it's a big ocean as well. so even if you don't see anything going on at the things could be pretty quickly unpredictable and i'm sure most you've seen those chilling images from 2000, 4 from indonesia and how that event was now. that was, of course nothing. what we're talking about here. but it just gives you a little flavor. sometimes the unpredictability of all of this going forward and when it comes up, that's going to also go down. and that's again, the undertow we've talked about not a good day to be in the water at all, not advise people not to do that again, the unpredictability of this 40's going on in the far east

bay, as you can see right now. 51 for oakland. 38. meanwhile, for santa rosa couple chilly spots. still livermore as graduate up to 41. however, that's because of some of the cloud cover. didn't allow temperatures to fall too much low down to our south. it's a rain producer, but it's not going make it up here with rain is going to kind of variable clouds from our standpoint. winds are kind of coming from the south a little bit, a little bit offshore as well. single digits to getting into the lower teens. 57 to about 60. we're expecting for a high today. we have some mid-level clouds mixed into that will stratus for good measure. but variable clouds will cover both for location and time of day. and coming up a little bit, we'll take a complete look at your weekend forecast and take a peek at what's going on into next week. noel. >> thanks, dave. in now to some coronavirus news. big story this morning. some pharmacies have closed their doors this weekend because of staffing shortages due to the spread of the omicron variant, walgreens. and cvs. both announced some temporary closures. kron four's gayle ong has those details. >> pharmacists have ended

testing they've prescribing vaccines, administering vaccines. they've been doing a monoclonal antibody infusions. those are just some of the additional duties assigned a pharmacist during the pandemic. >> michael hogue, former president of american pharmacists association says the extra workload has lead to burnout. so when you add omicron on top of that situation, it definitely creates quite a problem. >> a problem we are seeing nationwide, 2 of the country's largest retail pharmacies are temporarily closing stores on weekends due to an increase in the number of covid-19 infections among staffers. in a statement to kron 4, a walgreens spokesperson says in part this is extremely limited in on a store by store bases and not specific to any region are area as we make every effort to staff and keep pharmacies open for our patients in the community. a cbs spokesperson says the store closures on water both days of the weekend are temporary. >> and in response to the fast-spreading omicron

coronavirus variant as well as a nationwide staffing shortage with this particular new variant >> we're experiencing staffing shortages again. doctor maria lopez owns and runs the mission wellness pharmacy in san francisco. she's not surprised to hear of the big chains having to scale back in 20 years of being a pharmacist. i've never seen. >> so many people stressed out. we're tired. we're working on the frontlines of the pandemic. a pharmacist provided a lot of vaccines in this country as well as you know, that their piece or a or and newly outs. walgreens and cvs did not say which stores in the bay area will be closed. that pharmacists say with fewer staff, you may notice longer wait times at your local pharmacy. you want to give your pharmacy a call and ask for your refills a little earlier than you normally would just so that they have time to prepare them to just remember that. >> we're working on the front lines and and doing the best we can. gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> meanwhile, if you are

trying to get an at-home covid tests starting today, private health insurance comp nies are going to be required to cover the cost of that at home test, the biden administration announced the change in order to lower the cost and make testing more convenient for americans. health insurance providers will be required to cover the cost of up to 8 at home tests per person per month. now, as of right now, you'll have to buy that test yourself and then make a claim with your insurer using the receipt from your purchase. but officials say they are planning to make the reimbursement process automatic at the time of your purchase. that, however, is still in the works. the federal website where people can request free at-home covid-19. tests will launch next week. the website is covid tests dot gov. the white house says orders will be accepted starting wednesday, january 19th supplies are limited just 4 tests per home. the tests are free, including know shipping fee, but the

>> welcome back here to the kron. 4 morning news. 9.15. we're continuing to monitor the tsunami advisory that is in effect for the bay area and the entire california coast. this just in beaches at point rays are going to be closed till the advisory is lifted, which is another several hours away. also ocean beach and the marina parking lot. those are closed ocean beach itself has been closed by the national park service. if you are planning on going any of those locations, it's not happening today. dave spahr is taking a look at half moon bay right now. dave. >> yeah, good morning. well, good morning, everybody. and

pretty much what we've been talking about here looks like at times it gets kind of close to the grasses edge here a little bit. we what we're calling kind of the aggressive king tides effect as we reach high tide right now about as we speak here. you know, this thing was going on for 8 minutes. it was heard in new zealand that was heard 500 miles away. that's how impacted was our gauges out to america. samoa noted a wave of 2 feet. now that's not just a wind wave. that's the ocean rise of 2 feet having to go across the ocean basin like that. tremendous amount of energy with all of this going on here. so this is something to be watched over the next few hours just to see the total impact is the ocean kind of settles down? to speaking, never completely does. but a look at the golden gate bridge to see quite a bit of cloud cover that and work here. as you can see, that's going to be kind of hallmarks of today and tomorrow they will see some breaks going on tomorrow afternoon. get some sunshine going here for you. but most of the action is down south. so we're seeing all the barking up here and the biting for the rain is down in

southern california. that's a kind of the scattered shower forecast going on for them all weekend long. our temperatures, 38 for a santa rosa 40's cover. good chunk of the east. beijing will notice there. 45 for san jose. 54 in 51 san francisco. futurecast for continues to show the cloud cover coming up from the south. this will be the high to mid-level cloudiness again, thickening and thinning at times throughout the period. it looks like a linger all the it looks like a linger all the way int but really next week we're going to have more of this kind of in this. a range of this variable cloudy scenario, but no rain and no like clear blue skies except for a little bit of time. tsunami advisory with us again through not just the morning hour, maybe early afternoon, 2 through this morning this weekend. it's high clouds, mild highs in the 60's. and then for the week ahead, variable clouds, dry temperatures around 60 again, we're ahead of the ball game for this rain season which

>> welcome back. 9.30, on this saturday morning. we're continuing to follow breaking news of a tsunami advisory here in the bay area and along the entire california coast. this is new video we've just received from pacifica. you can see the waves crashing a very aggressively on to the rocks there at the shoreline, causing water to then overflow on to the sidewalks and the

roads. officials are asking and urging people to steer clear of our beaches and our coastlines right now, the beaches at point rays are closed until the advisory is lifted, which is going to be several more hours. ocean beach in san francisco also closed now, parking lots at the marina and san francisco are also closed as well. joining us now via zoom is bryan garcia with the national weather service to talk a little bit more about this brian, thanks for joining this is a tsunami advisory. what's the difference between a warning versus an advisory? >> good well, thanks for having me this morning and difference between advisory on a warrant. it's surely the height. the advisory covers tsunami waves that are one to 3 feet and that 3 feet upward was going warning level said essentially that tries to capture a longer inundation

area versus just the beaches of the coastal regions, ok? and when i think tsunami, i do think enormous waves, right? so just though, the word kind of stirs stirs you up when you're getting these alerts on your phone or or, you know, watching here on the news, these waves are enormous, but they are dangerous talking about what makes him so dangerous. >> that's right. the the tsunami surges are just that their search and try to get away little bit from calling it the way are saying it's a lot more people's brains that way. but it's really a search because that wavelength this so long, there's so much energy coming in with it. so you'll see the front side of that tsunami surge head and then it will continue to surge. and for 10's of minutes following that. so there's a lot of water moving there. so what makes it so dangerous, especially in the offense like this isn't necessarily the height and inundation. it's the it's the sheer surge of the water and all of the water moving. so if you're out on a boat, if you're out on a kayak, if you're a surfer in

the water, it's going to be very difficult to navigate the waters. if you're up by standard on the beach out there, looking around. that search can round up the beach really fast and catch you off guard and sweep you out to sea easily. in this case. >> that's what we've been our live camera down at half moon bay. we've noticed at times, you know, the water gets very, very close to the shoreline and then it kind of receives, you know, here and there. how long are we going to be dealing with this here today? >> yeah, great question. and that's still a big question mark for us because this is this is an event like a none of us have ever seen. you know, we're used to subduction zones, creating a displacement of water and creating a tsunami. so like we think back to 2011 and that i hope that from japan those types of sarries were used to these underwater volcanoes. these eruptions are something we're not used to. so we will round that. pfizer e outs and tell 3

hours beyond the waves drop below one foot. other words, once we see the waves drop below tsunami advisory level, we'll have that advisory go out for at least 3 hours. beyond that, just to make sure there's no straggler waves because the largest waves and the tsunami may not be the first or even the middle. we could see it later in the of that. >> you know, walking, i do a lot of hikes along the coast. we see the you know, this is a tsunami areas on the watch area. when was the last time our area actually saw tsunami advisory. >> the last advisory that we would have seen. we had a brief one a few years ago. do an earthquake up in a population islands in alaska. but once we get the data and from some of the local areas where drop that advisories, i think that was about 2 and a half years 3 years ago at this

point. so it's been a few years for sure. the last big event was obviously in 2011 month that i hope to them. >> and and how does this compare to that event? >> that's actually really interesting question. something back and look at because this event is occurring at high tide and the high tides today are in that 5, 6, foot range. and we're putting about 2 feet of water on top of that. so we're seen the inundation around the beaches act very much like a king tide. so then you think of the king tide that takes about 12 hours to go from high to low level and this case were seen at those high to low levels calm in about 30 to 60 minute timeframe. so very weems. that's a hope n 2011 happened at low tide. even though the tsunami itself, the actual overall high may have been a little bit larger than what we're seeing now. the impacts are actually a little

bit less in terms of the broad scope in area when we think about santa cruz harbor, for example, the 2011 tsunami had a large surge of water go up the harbor and rec a lot of the docks created multimillion dollars worth of damage. and we're already hearing about a little bit of damage today in santa cruz harbor from some of the docks. so we're going to have to look at at this comparison so that later. but right now, because the title high is already started so high rip and it helps, you know, top of that, we're expecting a little bit impacts to the beaches and the immediate coast, maybe not. and they shun inland people's residential areas, but in the local areas right at the beach. >> so right at the beach, yes. but then also those in in our bays, you know, we have lots of of boats that just kind of dock there in the bay, some people living on their boats. what's your advice to those folks today? >> yeah, that's right. we do have a lot of people have a lot of love the boards out there. and so the advice from a local area officials, well,

as the state not says, if you can safely get off your local port boat. do so if not, you're going to be writing out a lot of water moving around the marine u.s. today. we haven't seen a ton of water move into yet. most of it has been confined to the media said coast. the bayside been spared to a degree thus far. but that's not a guarantee that that's going to remain through the day. so if your lab or get off the boat, if you own a boat and you want to go down and check on your boat. forget about do not go down to the marina. wait until tomorrow. wait until things calm down. and it's a time that it's open and easy access, safe access for you to get down there and check on things and make sure you've got those a boot or hopefully you've got buoys there where, you know, you're both not going to be knocking. >> into the dock too much. anything else you want folks to to keep in mind and and any outlook tomorrow? do we think this could extend through tomorrow?

>> yeah, you know, in terms of the extension into tomorrow, it's not likely. typically these events last anywhere from about 4 to 8 hours. so we'll see how this one plays out. like i said, this is something like we've never seen before with an underwater volcanic eruption, creating the displacement water and ultimately the tsunami that's impacting us. so have to wait. see how plays out. we could see some currents tomorrow, but in terms of amplitude, should come down below advisory level and thank should be a little bit safer tomorrow, but will probably still see some residual current in terms of what people can do today and even tomorrow. follow the advice of their local officials if they have closed beaches and they have closed certain areas, parking loss and whatnot, don't try to go down there. don't even try to go to the beach today. we have so many web camps across our area to watch these events unfold before our eyes. there's no need for people to go to the

so beaches at point, raise ocean beach parking lots in the marina. all of that closed right now because of this state. you're looking at half moon bay here behind you. yeah. and it looks like we're maybe a little surge going on here as well is very important. point talk about that surge is not like wind generated ways. >> was shunned, boom. it's done. this is a search with pressure in force. i mean, just on your ankles that could knock you over. it's a it's pretty powerful when when it's coming in like this. and it's a very strong tide event that we're going to have some time to why these to tidal waves back in the way back day. but we're looking for this to play out for the morning hours. we're right around high tide as we speak now. now we're starting to drift back a little bit, but this event will be playing out over the next few hours on the weather front. rain is down south for the most part. so we're getting some of the high mid-level clouds up north here. that's how we're going to call the forecast. variable clouds with high to mid-level clouds throughout the day. temperatures reaching about 60 going on in london and maybe a

little bit better clearing into tomorrow and maybe even more cloudiness lingering as we get into monday, too. but next week looks to be pretty dry. we're going get into the 4 zone forecast in just a bit.

now in san francisco. it is closed to the public. the national park service closed the beach about an hour ago. that's when the advisory really went into effect and high tide has already begun here in san francisco. the combination of the 2 is making it very unsafe for anyone to be out in the waters right now that the waves don't look very the current is what's unsafe for anyone to be dealing with because the waves are kind of consistently and constantly and and we are just urging everyone if you are planning to go to the coast, planning going to be just a day, do not do dave spahr has got a little bit more detail on our weather forecast. it's a little cloudy out there today, dave. so not even really a great day to be at the beach anyway. yeah, quite quite a bit of the way. variable clouds on balances. how are calling it? good well, good morning, everybody. >> as we start our day to we're talking a lot about tides because of this event. it was a

>> a volcano and are under water going on for 8 minutes was heard 500 miles away and a local sensor we had was in america samoa noted about a 2 foot rise in sea level. that's a lot of emotion here. such just a 2 foot wave that say force of the ocean being lifted up by that amount. so is a lot of energy that has to play out throughout the entire pacific basin before we can rest this here. and now we're feeling the effects on our coast. 40's off to the east bay, 47 for hayward. 38 santa rosa still chilly spot get a couple more hours. they'll catch up. 45 meanwhile for san jose, we're expecting highs to be a little warmer in the south bay, even though they're closer to the source of all of this traffic of cloud cover 40's up to tahoe. it looks like with quite a bit of cloud cover. looks like the next few days. any new snow coming and the making asperger too over the next week. but that's really about it because of the rain we've had since october how about this really clean up this board? we're now into the severe category, which is an

improvement now. however, hopefully more rain is upstream later on. not this week, though, but again, back to stormtracker 4. there you see all the moisture down to the south. it's going to be a weekend weather maker for southern california for us. it's going to be a cloud maker today. maybe some breaks going on tomorrow and then more cloud cover. it looks like by monday as well. so we're going all the barking, but no biting down south like they're getting. and as we look for the week ahead. when we're done with this system, some the pacific going up in around a very familiar pattern from the recent years of the drought that we've had looks like it's repeating, but at least we're off to a good start with a lot of rain we've had thus far this season. 61 san francisco to the coast which hopefully not going to lower 60's. let you live there. lower 60's also on the bayside and 63 foster city, san carlos as well down to the south bay, even though you're fighting lot of cloud cover here might see middle 60's going on here. 66 santa claire also cupertino mid 60's along the east bay shoreline. lower 60's off the tri valley. 61

for walnut creek. 64 berkeley. les, what 58, 60 fairfield, by the way, 62 for napa and santa rosa at about 66 and talk about persistence forecast being much the same and terms like sunny all week long. well, we've got sun and clouds mixture here. looks like money, quite cloudy, but temperatures holding at about 60 ish our lows. not too bad, will dip into the upper 30's here. but 40's are pretty much rule that's inland. then along the coast will do the upper 40's. well. >> thanks, dave. we do want to show you just the latest video we've been in terms of our tsunami advisory that's affecting our count entire california coast and our bay area beaches. this is video from pacifica. you can see just the force with which these waves are crashing on to the rocks. what it then does is causes all that water to that in a spill onto the sidewalks and on to city streets again, if you live

right there along the coast, you should be ok, but do not get any closer to the water beaches again at point. razor close to the advisory is lifted ocean beach in san francisco is closed as well. the marina parking lot at the marina and san francisco also closed today. we were just speaking with national weather service a bit ago. they were saying if you have the feeling that you want to go and check on your boat, that's may be docked in the harbor. wait, don't do that today because the surges can really catch you off guard. if you are someone who are, you know, someone who lives on their boat in the marina there in our day. go ahead and ask them let them know that maybe they might want to come and because otherwise they're going to be dealing with lots of surges of waves over the next several hours. this is video half moon bay where you can see again.

waves just can being very continue. s the there in the far distance you saw a patrol boat. there's going to be patrol boat. san francisco fire right now is patrolling our beaches right now. and that's going to be consistent along the entire california coast. so again, steer clear of our beaches. today is not the day to go for any sort of walk. surf kayak, nothing like that. in other news this morning, the las vegas raiders, they won on style as they headed off to face the cincinnati bengals in the afc wild card game going to be playing later this afternoon. first responders wishing them well as they left vegas yesterday. kickoff for the game is set for one 30. this afternoon. meanwhile, tomorrow the forty-niners are going to be playing the dallas cowboys in the nfc wild-card game. kron four's rob nesbitt caught up with some fans of both teams who are headed out to dallas from sfo. i expected to see a lot of reading gold jerseys at sfo friday, but i was surprised to see cowboys

on this saturday morning. before we go, we want to give you one last live. look at ocean beach this morning. ocean beach is closed here in san francisco due to the tsunami advisory that's been issued for the entire california coast. it's not the only beach that's closed beaches at point. rays are closed until the tsunami advisory is lifted. also parking lot at the marina and san francisco are closed. i know officials over in alameda county, they have evacuation alert for folks who are living in and around the harbor and those living on their boats. they're being asked to come and due to the tsunami advisory waves expected to be about one to 3 feet tall. it's
